April 2018

Summary: Celebration at Frances, Patrick and Sam's trip to New Orleans

Dates on this page

Sun Apr 1, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 7. Nap. Rode UberX to the Castro. Arrived early for our dinner reservation, so we walked in the neighborhood. Dinner at Canela with Patrick. Patrick had wanted to try Canela's Passover Dinner with wine pairing: matzoh ball soup with farfel, dill and mixed pickled vegetables; chilled smoked white fish spread with chive, matzoh, and haroset; braised short ribs with tzimmes, parsnip puree and horseradish vinaigrette; housemade chocolate almond cake with coconut cream and caramel; one bottle of san pell; two espressos: $193.84 after a $30 tip. Afterwards my stomach gave me trouble the entire night. Service by Elizabeth Y was excellent.

Mon Apr 2, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 8. Breakfast at home: a banana. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Continued working on a report to the Faculty/Lab Policy Working Group for Web Governance. Small web edit for Taryn. Created a news page for Renslo Lab. Lunch: leftovers. Snack: black cherry nonfat greek yogurt, coconut water. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs pesto pasta with asparagus and green garlic yogurt. Finished watching Wargames (1983) on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Tue Apr 3, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 9. Breakfast at home: Patrick prepared greek yogurt with diced orange, banana, and pear with pepitas, cinnamon, and honey; hot water. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Styling work: resolved a problem in ucsf_pharmacy_webedit in which bullets and numbers were not appearing in lists in the wysiwyg. HTML email work: resolved too little padding-left on lists. Lunch at desk: leftovers. Lots of styling work and task followup. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs chicory salad with chicken, blood orange, and avocado—modified to use mixed greens instead of chicory (which is too bitter for me) and ranch dressing instead of vinaigrette (because it irritates the corners of my mouth). Vacuumed and cleaned in the kitchen. Dessert: one scoop each of Humphrey Slocombe honey graham ice cream. Began using 1.1.1.1 for DNS on my work laptop and the MacBook Air media server. We'll see how it goes.

Wed Apr 4, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 10. Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs with cilantro and shredded cheddar, hash browns, toast with butter, 8 ounces of orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Spent most of the day reading blog posts about all the great, recent talks at An Event Apart Seattle. Rode Uber Pool Express to the Castro. Met Patrick for dinner at Hamburger Mary's, our first time to this space at 531 Castro Street that for decades had been vacant. We were warmly greeted by a fabulous drag queen. The wheelchair lift in the middle of the dining room is extraordinarily awkward, taking up a lot of space and creating an unpleasant claustrophobia for diners in the back of the restaurant. It's unfortunate that the entire restaurant could not be one level. The back patio was not open, but I was able to see that it looks like a really nice space. Patrick and I split a caesar salad (no chicken) and a barbara-q bacon chicken burger. For drinks, he had a Stella draft, and I had a hot toddy. All food and drink was delicious. Service by cheerful Eric was excellent. Our bill was delivered charmingly in a high-heeled shoe. $45.21 after an $8 tip. There is oddly no mirror in the restroom; I had bit my tongue while chewing food and was unable to check it in the restroom. Afterwards we had planned to attend an exhibit and talk at the LGBT Museum but at the last minute changed our minds about attending. Instead we browsed for a while at Cliff's Variety, buying nothing. Rode UberX home with Patrick. Watched Superstore s3:e17 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Recharge Medical work.

Thu Apr 5, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 11. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Descreened an image in Photoshop for Paula for a news story. Chatted with Ronde about letterhead for Burlingame. Troubleshot problems converting a Word document to PDF such that it includes hyperlinks and correct fonts and all images. Continued CodePen experiments in css: flexbox, grid, and more. Updated the CP orgchart for Erika. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs beef barbacoa tacos with tomatillo salsa, Alta Palla, a glass of red wine for Patrick. The salsa was not spicy this time. Today Patrick introduced to our home a new kind of Kleenex box. It's a cylinder about 7.5 inches tall and about 3 inches in diameter. It's made mostly of cardboard with a little bit of plastic in the top rim. Kleenex is pulled from the top. I find it cute.

Fri Apr 6, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 12. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Began new work on image credits in a new branch. Errand: drug store, grocery. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: a meal created partly from leftovers: coconut rice with beef barbacoa and black beans, side salad of red cabbage and mixed greens, Alta Palla. Late beverage: chai tea latte from a TetraPak concentrate. To bed late.

Sat Apr 7, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 13. Breakfast: an apple. Cut my hair, showered. Lunch: a sandwich that Patrick had brought home from Starbucks, tortilla chips. Painted the bathroom in preparation for a new bathroom wall cabinet. Patrick helped by removing everything from the bathroom and cleaning the walls. Shower, rest. Dinner at home with Patrick from New Tsing Tao via waiter.com. Delivery was 30 minutes later than expected—a total of 75 minutes. Patrick's fortune: Adventure is not outside, it is within. My fortune: Don't be fooled by first impressions.

Sun Apr 8, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 14. Removed masking from yesterday's bathroom paint job and installed a new bathroom cabinet. Restored the bathroom electricity faceplates and cleaned. Disassembled the old bathroom cabinet and salvaged parts I thought might be useful later. Today I seem to have partly resolved a longstanding problem in Google Chrome in which Chrome is laggy or seems to freeze and the (mouse) pointer or cursor disappears for a long time. It happened frequently on certain sites, and for a long time I was unable to identify the source of the problem. The solution: in chrome://flags set Autoplay Policy to Default. I had had it on Document User Activation is Required. I had set this setting a long time ago to prevent annoying autoplay videos and did not realize that it causes this lag. The feature is still experimental, so hopefully Google is still resolving the bugs in it. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs creamy mushroom pasta (pappardelle), Alta Palla, bread and butter. Late snack: some pistachios and tortilla chips, Alta Palla.

Mon Apr 9, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 15. Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs with parsley, hash browns, bread and butter, orange juice. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Spent nearly all of the day editing Wells Lab content and a little of the end of the day on styling work: rotated image credits. Lunch: leftovers. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs brined pork chop with artichokes and white beans. The pork was excellent. We had trouble figuring out how to eat the baby artichokes. It seems you should ignore the leaves and cut out only the hearts for eating. Seems obvious in retrospect. Today I brought home a bouquet of roses in red, white, and yellow for Patrick.

Tue Apr 10, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 16. Took the day off work for Patrick's birthday. For pre-brunch we walked to Antigua Cafe and shared a breakfast burrito with drinks, cafe au lait for Patrick, chai tea latte for me. Sam picked us up and then we picked up Kerry and Mom Ryan. Lunch at Eric's Restaurant: combo appetizer platter, egg drop soup, five-spice chicken, walnut shrimp, hunan fish, hoisin string beans, steamed white rice, steamed brown rice, hot tea, ice water. My fortune: Your ability to love will help a child in need. $93.25 after a $16 tip. Sam dropped everyone at home. Nap with Patrick. I woke before him and did some Recharge Medical work: blog post. Rode UberX to the Castro. Arrived early for our dinner reservation and walked a bit in the neighborhood. Dinner at Frances with Patrick: sparkling elderberry cocktail; carrot soup and steak for Patrick; bacon beignets and atlantic cod for me; dessert: coffee with dark chocolate pound cake to share. $178.86 before a $30 tip. Rode UberX home. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Patrick's birthday present from me was a Kindle Voyage (wifi).

Wed Apr 11, 2018

Had trouble sleeping last night. Continuing cold symptoms, day 17. Breakfast at home with Patrick: oatmeal with fixins, chai tea latte. Rode Muni 66 to 44 to 1 to UCSF Laurel Heights: 52 minutes door to door. Found that my ID card had fallen out of my badge holder, so I reported it lost and the police department deactivated it. A few minutes later I got a call that it had been turned in, so I asked the police department to reactivate it. Spam management: lately since (I believe?) rescam.org doesn't accept messages anymore and instead of unsubscribing I have been choosing to update my profile then replacing my email address with the email address of someone who recently spammed me. Since they are verifying who I am before the update procedure by sending me a link in email, I think it's much harder for them to figure out what I'm doing and mitigate or prevent it. I know this method doesn't work perfectly, but I feel it's better than doing nothing. Web edit for UDAR. Web edits for Renslo and Arkin. Styling work: 90-degree image credits. Lunch at desk: leftovers. Errand: groceries at Bryan's. Rode Uber Pool home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs chicken tikka masala except their spicy sauce removed and a non-spicy one substituted. Exhausted due to poor sleep from last night.

Thu Apr 12, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 18. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Breakfast at Cafe Bellini: egg, cheddar, and bacon on croissant; small coffee with milk and cream. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Microsite and task followup. Styling work: image credits print stylesheets. Lunch at desk: leftovers. Rode Muni 1BX to 28R to 19th and Quintara. Walked home. Door to door: about 45 minutes. Dinner at home with Patrick: pasta tikka masala, san pell, red wine. Unloaded photos from my phone. Bathroom improvement: installed a holder for my razor using 3M command hooks, installed wire to limit the arc of movement of the swingout mirror so that it doesn't hit the wall or the new bathroom cabinet.

Fri Apr 13, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 18. Breakfast at home: yogurt with diced apple, pepitas, and pistachios. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Microsites followup: Wells Lab build. Lunch at Rigolo: mushroom gruyere burger with fries and pickle slice, hot water. Errand: hardware store. Mailchimp work for Staff Wellness Group: Potluck and Ice Cream Event build. Mailing list update with Eric. Chatted briefly with John K and Jill W who stopped by to visit. Rode Muni 1BX to 28R to 26th and Quintara, walked some, then rode the 48 some and walked more to get home. There was an accident near 19th and Moraga that backed up southbound traffic to Golden Gate Park, so it took me 75 minutes to get home. The 28R left its route for a few blocks and successfully avoided some traffic. Dinner at King of Thai Noodle Cafe with Patrick: crispy chicken with fried rice and thai iced tea for Patrick, crab fried rice add shrimp and hot tea for me. A planned power outage on our block lasted two hours longer than expected.

Sat Apr 14, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 19. Breakfast at home: egg and cheddar on english muffin, 8 ounces of orange juice. Nap. Trip planning with Patrick. Realized today that we had purchased tickets to Matt Alber's show last night at Feinstein's and forgot to go. I chalk this up to another occurrence of forgetfulness tax. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: New York strip steak, skinny french fries, tater tots, ketchup, red wine, Alta Palla. Watched Superstore s3:e19 and an episode of Will and Grace (1998) on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick.

Sun Apr 15, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 20. Rode Muni 28 to 15th Avenue House. Brunch with Danny at Hong Kong Lounge. Returned to 15th Avenue House. Brunch with Danny, Phil, Drew, Romy, Quyen, and Dave at Hong Kong Lounge. Afterwards we returned to 15th Avenue House briefly then walked to Calacademy and watched Expedition Reef in the planetarium. It was so relaxing that I briefly fell asleep. We left right afterwards, and it began to rain and I was the only one with an umbrella. I said goodbye to them at the de Young and walked to 9th and Judah via the Botanical Garden getting free admission with my drivers license, stopping at Arizmendi along the way where I bought a slice of foccacia. Rode Muni 66 home. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Brothers Pizza via Grubhub: delivery was 8 minutes late. Veggie special pizza, meat lasagne, side salad with ranch, bread with butter, Alta Palla, red wine. Watched an episode of Will and Grace (1998) on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Organized photos.

Mon Apr 16, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 21. Breakfast at home: veggie focaccia slice from Arizmendi, two eggs scrambled, 8 ounces of orange juice. Rode Muni 28R to 1BX to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Lunch at Rigolo with Patrick, Remi, and Jesse. We hadn't seen Remi and Jesse in a number of years after they moved to New York City, and enjoyed catching up over two pizzas. Afterwards we visited the Chinatown Pretty exhibit at the JCC—fascinating. Then I took them on a walk down Sacramento Street pointing out the various chic design boutiques. They gave Patrick a ride home. Watched various videos released from Drupalcon 2018 in Nashville. We didn't go this year due to California Assembly Bill 1887 prohibiting travel to certain states that discriminate based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, or to states that have passed a law repealing such protections. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. Late snack: leftover buttered bread with thickly grated cheddar cheese.

Tue Apr 17, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 22. Patrick left early this morning for a short trip to New Orleans with Sam to see Sam's mom Dianne. Breakfast at home: one granny smith apple. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. 1-on-1 with Eric. Remeet with Eric. Zoom conference call with Liana: Mailchimp training. Lunch at As Quoted. I ordered zucchini pappardelle with basil pesto sauce, sliced roma tomatoes, and a fresh sprig of basil. To drink: a chai tea latte. Instead of zucchini pappardelle, I was surprised to have received zucchini "pappardelle" which was zucchini peeled to resemble pappardelle pasta. I didn't complain. I didn't finish my dish. Afterwards I sought another small dish at several other places nearby and ended up getting a grilled cheese sandwich and a blond americano at Starbucks, my first time having their blond coffee, which I knew I would like and I did. The rest of the afternoon was spent working on a special project in Photoshop for Eric for the forthcoming UFD retro: overlaying a screenshot of the UFD (web) with colors and data representing analytics. Had a lot of trouble printing but resolved it by reinstalling and reconfiguring the printer driver for the Xerox copier. Rode Muni 43 and 66 home—about 45 minutes. Dinner at home: leftover meat lasagne, Alta Palla. Watched YouTube videos including Beyonce at Coachella—amazing. To bed late.

Wed Apr 18, 2018

Styling work: changes to images with links. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Medication Outcomes Center website discovery meeting with Kim D, Rosa R, and Rita J. Angela helped a lot with media setup. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights with Eric. Lunch: an orange I brought from home and two dim sum dumplings from The View Cafe (about $3 total). UFD retrospective meeting with Eric, Susie, Paula, Grant, and Levi. HTML email template work: create same as UFD template but with dark navy header and vision statement backgrounds instead of green. Rode Uber Pool home. Dinner at home: leftover pizza, Alta Palla. Dessert: one small piece of dark chocolate with cherries and almonds. Recharge Medical work: web edits to Facials and IV Therapy, new blog post: weddings.

Thu Apr 19, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 24. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Mission Bay for the 2018 Communicators Conference, which I thought was terrific—all great speakers in the sessions I attended including Denise Lee Yohn, Carrie Ko, Shawn Sprockett, Louise Chu, Sara Shaffer, Cyril Manning, and Preston Lewis. A gift upon check-in: a silver battery charger (PWB039) with USB charging cable imprinted with the UCSF logo expression, which I thought was a really nice gift. Breakfast: yogurt cup with granola and fresh berries, coffee. Lunch which I ate outside in the sun: turkey bacon half sandwich, caprese half sandwich, potato chips, a banana. Afterwards at the reception I had a glass of red wine and chatted with EFD, Ed C, John K, and Levi G. The UCSF shuttle ride from Mission Bay to Parnassus took longer than normal. It seemed like it took an hour instead of the normal 30 minutes due to traffic. Walked to dinner at Perilla: imperial rolls with five-spice chicken and garlic noodles, hot tea, ice water. Rode Muni bus 66 home. Rested. Recharge Medical web work: new blog post: weddings.

Fri Apr 20, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 25. Worked from home day. Susie agreed the team could work from home due to 420 Day to avoid traffic. Breakfast: scrambled egg and cheddar on english muffin, chai tea latte. Patrick returned from New Orleans. Spent the day following up on four tasks: (1) whether to act as intermediary for identity/branding for the creation of scientific posters, (2) evaluating systems of rsvp (aka invitations) for Eric, (3) edits following Don K's title change, (4) investigating feasibility of standardizing email signatures. Lunch: yesterday's leftovers from Perilla, hot water. Dinner at home with Patrick: I prepared leftover pizza and shells and cheese from a box with peas, sausage, fines herbes, fromage blanc, and thickly shredded sharp cheddar. Alta Palla to drink. Watched clips on YouTube with Patrick on the TCL Roku television. Performed Keychain Access surgery on Patrick's MacBook Pro in an attempt to resolve a problem with macOS asking for credentials even after being asked to remember a password. Late snack: hot water, plantain chips.

Sat Apr 21, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 26. Patrick prepared breakfast for me: two eggs scrambled, hash browns, toast with butter, two sausage links, 8 ounces of orange juice, hot water. Installed a double towel bar in the bathroom following the installation of a new bathroom wall cabinet. Weeded in Contacts on my MacBook Pro. Joined a nap with Patrick. Folded laundry. Lunch: a small bowl of oatmeal with diced granny smith apple and cinnamon, hot water. Napped again. Rode UberX to the Castro, met Patrick at Dog-Eared Books then dined at Fable: ricotta-stuffed tempura squash blossoms to share, duck breast with chanterelles and potatoes for Patrick, roast chicken breast with forbidden rice and yellow wax beans for me. Dessert: we shared a roasted nut bread pudding (walnut, pecan, and almond) with whipped cream. Beverages: a glass of red wine for Patrick, san pell with the meal, and coffee with cream for both at dessert. $138.13 after a $22 tip. Walked in the Castro some before riding UberX home. Watched Superstore s3:e20 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick.

Sun Apr 22, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 27. Brunch with The Group with No Name at Minas Brazilian. I had the Brazilian hamburger with fries, no cheese. Afterwards we split up. Some of us accompanied Phil to Lowe’s Hardware to return some items. Then we visited K&L Wine. Bay Natives. Drinks at Charmaine’s rooftop bar at Proper Hotel with an annoying and seemingly unnecessary wait in line on the not very clean sidewalk. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs spaghetti with fennel, arugula, and burrata; Alta Palla. To bed early.

Mon Apr 23, 2018

Continuing cold symptoms, day 28. Breakfast at home with Patrick: oatmeal with fixins. Nap. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Task followup, including scientific poster presentations. Lunch at Starbucks: turkey and fire-roasted corn salad, hot tall chai (not chai tea latte). Task followup. Rode Uber Pool Express home for under $3 before tip. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs blackened fish tacos with mandarin salsa, white wine, Alta Palla. Recharge Medical web work: job postings.

Tue Apr 24, 2018

Met Patrick outside of Cafe Flore, rereading from The Velvet Rage (dead tree version). We visited the farmer's market buying nothing, then walked in the Castro, stopping at Poesia for dinner: glass of rosso montefalco for Patrick, glass of vermentino for me, san pell for both. We shared the boat-shaped insalata aurora. Patrick got a special of the day: ossobuco with saffron risotto. I got branzino al cartoccio: Mediterranean sea bass baked in parchment paper with white wine, side of greens which I believe were pea shoots with some small tomato halves. For dessert we shared a delightfully light chocolate spuma with cayenne. We enjoyed our entire meal. Service by Sara L was excellent. $154.07 before a $29 tip. Afterwards we walked in the Castro stopping briefly at The Edge which was showing musicals but which also was too crowded so we left. The LGBT Museum had a community event that was well-attended but in which we weren't interested. Everywhere else was dead. We decided to get coffee at Cafe Flore and discovered that it has replaced its coffee bar with an alcohol bar. We were able to get coffee, but their espresso machine had broken, and they are still waiting to get a replacement. Afterwards we tried riding Uber then Lyft home but my payment wasn't being accepted, so Patrick ordered the ride on Lyft and we finally got home. I troubleshot my payment issue but found nothing I could resolve on my own.

Grocery shopping at Bryan's and Cal-mart. Rode Uber Pool home. Dinner at home with Patrick: roast chicken breast salad with yellow beets. Watched Superstore s3:e21 and Will and Grace (1998) s8:e24 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Long nap. Woke at midnight and rode Uber Pool to the Castro arriving at 1 am. At Badlands I met Mike, Stephen G, Dennis the Menace, Edmund, Albert, Oliver. I talked mostly to Stephen. We talked about Florida, Disneyworld/Disneyland, Star Tours, Paul Reubens, books we are reading, YouTube, Muni, SF neighborhoods, and more. After Badlands closed we continued talking while walking in the Castro, meeting a probably-homeless man named Quincy. Rode UberX home. Late meal: beefaroni from a can.

Sat Apr 28, 2018

Cut my hair, showered. Lunch at Lou's with Patrick: italian and sarsparilla for Patrick, hot pastrami and lemonade for me. Nap. Watched the last episode of Will and Grace (1998) and The Simpsons s29:e17 Lisa Gets the Blues on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Nap. Rode UberX to SoMa. Attended GlamCocks Present: Spectacular Spectacular at The Public Works at Stephen G's invitation. Met or encountered jason stephen mark sherwin vincent ed angel larry calvin alex h samuel david gerardo tony and probably a few more that I cannot now recall. The GlamCocks put on an impressive show in the style of Moulin Rouge (2001), but I am short and happened to be on the main floor when it began, and I could see very little of it, particularly when one of the lead performers (I think) writhed on the stage for a lengthy amount of time. It made me decide that stage performances intending to be this grand should not be performed in a dance club unless issues with inclusivity and sight lines can be resolved. Late meal: pot roast Chunky Soup from a can.

Sun Apr 29, 2018

Slept in. Lunch: leftovers. Afternoon snack: candied nuts from the farmer's market, peanut butter crackers. Recharge Medical work: updated the sitemap and ror file and scheduled email campaigns. Dinner: Patrick made red beans; I made rice.
