Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, and blueberries; chai with honey and milk. Signing out of Messages then signing back in fixed it after a few minutes. Toenail care. Began filing tax paperwork. Dinner at home with Patrick: fried salmon with rice and black sesame seed; hot water. We watched various YouTube videos. Dessert for me only: one Goodpop orange and vanilla ice cream bar. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes then later went to bed.

Sun Mar 2, 2025

All food was delicious. We watched part of the Oscars live on Hulu but while we were watching it abruptly ended with an error code and we were unable to continue watching even after force quitting the app and restarting. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. 1:1 with Katherine. Thu Mar 6, 2025

Pre-breakfast: half banana. Walked to Antigua Cafe for breakfast: bagel sandwich with egg, lettuce, and tomato; chai latte. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. The T tunnel was out of service, and I mistakenly exited at Powell before returning below and continuing on a T train. The ride took a lot longer than usual, and by the time I arrived at work I was exhausted. Wind-down activities all day. Met briefly with Suzan to review a staged story and make a few minor changes. At noon I attended the school town hall. Levi joined. Lunch was served: drinks, Ike's sandwiches, chips, marshmallow treats, caramel apple lollipops. I can't recall what we ate for dinner. I think but don't recall for certain that we watched Severance s2:e8 on Apple TV+.

Fri Mar 7, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, and blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Getting to work was hard today because the bus didn't show up. I noticed it appearing in a turn where it usually wasn't. I tried to catch a bus of a different route that would take me part of the way but that bus too did not arrive. I later learned that a truck had turned over a few blocks away and busses were rerouted. The Transit app notified me but not in a timely enough manner; I was alerted about 30 or 40 minutes later than I needed it. It took me about 50 minutes to travel about one mile. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Submitted a request for secure item destruction. Wind-down activities all day. Team meeting with Katherine and Suzan. Lunch: I walked to Super Duper on Irving and had the smallest burger, added cheddar cheese, side of fries, arnold palmer to drink. All food and drink were delicious. A very satisfying meal. Walked and rode Muni back to work. Prepped a new template for Weekly News Digest: COVID anniversary. Edited two stories for Suzan. Provided feedback on two social media images for Katherine. Helped Katherine troubleshoot a web editor permissions problem. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: spaghetti with marinara and mushrooms, hot water. We watched the remainder of the 97th Oscars and various YouTube videos.

Sat Mar 8, 2025

Breakfast at home by myself: two hash browns with ketchup, one fried egg. Midmorning Patrick returned from martial arts practice with Sam, then Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to our new home where we performed setup activities: some spot painting following electrician work, investigated burned out light bulbs, cleaned in the garage, and more. Lunch at Pasta Panino: we shared a bowl of minestrone and a full house salad no adds. Arnold Palmers to drink. Our server was Armando S. We waited a long time after finishing to receive our bill and then pay. Food and drink were all tasty. Returned to the new home, checked on the dried paint and cleaned paint gear. Walked and rode Muni home. Rested. Toe and foot care. Walked with Patrick to dinner. We tried eating at Dumpling Specialist but they were packed with a short line. Instead we ate at Sushi Zen: salmon teriyaki bento for Patrick, beef teriyaki bento for me. Green tea for both. Food and drink were delicious. Service was a bit slow at times, but mostly good. Walked home.

Sun Mar 9, 2025

Breakfast at home: Patrick had oatmeal with fixins. I prepared for myself an omelette using leftovers from taco night. We spent the day shopping, preparing, and packing for moving to the new home and removing hooks and other things from walls. Lunch: Patrick had nachos using taco night leftovers. I had leftover spaghetti in marinara. Napped with Patrick. Dinner at home with Patrick: shrimp and avocado salad. Afterwards we watched the latest episode of SNL (Lady Gaga) with butter microwave popcorn and cocktails. I washed dishes at a break in between. Patrick washed dishes afterwards.

Mon Mar 10, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Met with Suzan to review and format a story. Prep for COVID 5-year anniversary html email template change for Weekly News Digest. UCSF IT stopped by to pick up devices and media to be securely erased. Wind-down activities all day. Lunch: one sumo orange, water. Walked and rode Muni home. Rested and changed clothes. Walked and rode Muni to dinner at Wayfare Tavern with Joel and Cindy. This was a fitting choice since Wayfare Tavern, like Patrick and me, will be moving soon to a new location a few blocks away. Drinks: merlot for Cindy, fog city elixir for Joel and me. Appetizer: we shared deviled eggs. Mains: City Salad for Cindy, Tavern Burger with fries for Joel, Skuna Bay Salmon (gold beets, baby kale, red quinoa, granny smith apple, lemon ginger dressing) for me. Dessert: We shared donuts (streusel glaze, whipped crème fraiche, mango coulis). Food and service were excellent. We talked about anything and everything, and I really enjoyed spending this time with them. We walked to Embarcadero Station passing the new location of Wayfare Tavern along the way then went our separate ways.

Tue Mar 11, 2025

Meeting with Wan-Yu, Katherine, and Suzan to review infographics that Wan-Yu created and to finalized and deploy the COVID 5-year anniversary stories using a special one-off template for Weekly News Digest. Wed Mar 12, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and blueberries; one slice of sourdough toast with butter; hot water. The power unexpectedly went out on just one circuit, cause unknown. I reset the circuit breaker and emailed our landlord asking to help us resolve a problem with a washer load in progress. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Wind-down activities all day. Lunch with Suzan at La Boulangerie: soup of the day and turmeric chai for Suzan, turkey sandwich and chai latte for me. Later: coffee with Edgar, Julie, and Kiyomi at Caffe Central at Kalmanovitz Library. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: falafel in whole wheat pita, hot water. Afterwards we watched Everybody's Live s1:e1 with John Mulaney on Netflix then What We Do in the Shadows s6:e3 on Hulu. Patrick received some bad news today: Felice Picano, renowned writer and our friend, passed away in Los Angeles. Our hearts are heavy with the news of this loss.

Thu Mar 13, 2025

Breakfast: turkey sausage patty with fried egg on toasted english muffin, side of half banana, hot water. Worked from home. Wind-down activities all day. Lunch: leftover falafel in whole wheat pita from last night, hot water. Afternoon snack: triscuitesque crackers with fixins from last night. Walked and rode Muni to the Castro. Met Patrick while we awaited delivery of a dining room light fixture. Afterwards we walked to dinner at Tanglad: rare beef pho for Patrick, seafood pho for me, hot jasmine tea for both. Service was friendly but infrequent, and the credit card tray was mistakenly returned to the table next to us. Walked and rode Muni home. We watched Severance s2:e9 on Apple TV+. Patrick received some bad news today on top of yesterday's bad news: a friend of his mom's passed away.

Fri Mar 14, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and golden raisins; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. When I arrived at the bus stop I noticed that no predictions were available for any Muni lines. But my bus arrived on schedule nonetheless. Wind-down activities all day. Lunch from Panda Express: bowl with chow mein and mushroom chicken. My fortune: Make someone smile today and feel your heart smile too. Last day. No celebration at my request. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: mahi mahi burgers with fries, hot water. Archived documents.

Sat Mar 15, 2025

Breakfast: leftover noodle soup from Tanglad, hot water. Move prep: removed screws and anchors from walls, then patched. Lunch at home by myself: dumplings from frozen with dipping sauce, hot water. Upgraded operating systems on home devices. Nap. Walked and rode Muni to dinner at Luisa's where we met Michele and Kristyn: drinks: iced tea no lemon, wine. We ordered a salami pizza as a starter to share. Complimentary bread with oil and balsamic vinegar. Michele ordered lasagne alla bolognese with alfredo on top. Kristyn ordered gnocchi with vodka sauce. Patrick ordered pollo parmigiana with fettuccine. I ordered grilled salmon with veggies in wine sauce. After a long wait following the bread, our mains arrived before the pizza. We mentioned that we were expecting the pizza first, and it was delivered about 10 or 15 minutes later. We suspect but do not know for sure that our server was new or perhaps did not have good English skills. A different server, Sonia, took over at least twice for our server. Dessert: we shared an order of tiramisu. Patrick had a single espresso. Kristyn had a double espresso. All food and drink were delicious. We talked about family, relationships, music, vinyl records, tree nut allergies, lawnmowing, toilet seats, sports, Brene Brown, sugar, science, and more. The restaurant has existed for 50 years. It has a classy feel to it, and the service initially seemed like it was going to be excellent. Later I realized looking at our receipt that we were undercharged by about $15 to $20. One glass of wine was missing, and the charge for the espressos was not clearly correct. We did enjoy our meal despite the pizza hiccup, but Patrick and I are not sure if we'd return in the future. Rode Uber home. To bed.

Sun Mar 16, 2025

Breakfast: one egg scrambled with diced tomato, turkey sausage patty, one hash brown with ketchup, hot water. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to Kerry and Mom Ryan's for a visit and a celebration. After a while Kristyn and Michele arrived as well. We ate slices of chocolate cake from Noe Valley Bakery in West Portal. Drinks: iced tea, water, coffee. We chatted for a few hours before Patrick and I left to lunch at Gai Chicken and Rice (3463 16th Street): lean gai with chicken rice and hainan onion ginger sauce for Patrick, mixed gai with chicken rice and hainan onion ginger sauce for me, thai iced tea for both. All food and drink were delicious. Then we walked to our new home to unpack boxes and change ceiling lights from halogen to LED bulbs. Rested. Patrick napped. More removing things attached to walls. More packing. Dinner at home with Patrick: spaghetti with pork bolognese, hot water. We watched various YouTube videos: SNL 50 Rewind: The Early Years of Saturday Night Live via NBC News; Every American House Style Explained In 15 Minutes via Sahari; Extended interview: John Mulaney on his standup persona via CBS Sunday Morning; and Opening Monologue - Aidy Bryant - 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards via Film Independent. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: one slice of salami pizza left over from Luisa's.

Mon Mar 17, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and diced banana; hot water. Walked with Patrick to pick up a nearby rental car. We drove to Sam's and picked him up then drove to Kitchen Story for a celebration brunch with Kerry and Mom Ryan. At least that's what we thought. Mom wasn't feeling well, so Patrick, Sam, and I brunched at Kitchen Story while Mom and Kerry remained at home. We shared: ricotta hot cakes, pork belly tacos, millionaire's bacon BLT sandwich with potato wedges. Coffee and tea to drink. All food and drink were delicious. Patrick normally doesn't like potato wedges, but these were coated and particularly crispy, and he liked them a lot. Service by Nelson was inattentive at times, but I tipped generously anyway. About $100 after tip. Afterwards we returned to their place for tiny slices of leftover chocolate cake before returning home to the Sunset District to move small boxes of stuff to the new home. I remained at the new home continuing to change halogen to LED ceiling lights and to tend to a load of laundry—the one that had just started when the washing machine had broken. It had been wet for days sitting in a large bag in our bathtub and now not smelling good. Patrick and Sam bought groceries, stopped at old home to drop off groceries and pick up house plants, then returned to the new home to drop off house plants and pick me up, then we all drove to the old home and Sam dropped Patrick and me then Sam took the rental car home with his groceries. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled cheese sandwiches and side salad, hot water. We continued packing.

Tue Mar 18, 2025

Breakfast: Patrick's leftover soup from Tanglad and one sumo orange, hot water. Vacuumed. Early lunch for me: two slices of salami pizza left over from Luisa's. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom quesadillas, hot water. We watched various YouTube videos then Bill Burr: Drop Dead Years on Hulu.

Wed Mar 19, 2025

Breakfast: one egg scrambled with diced tomato, turkey sausage patty, one hash brown with ketchup, hot water. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to our new home where we met an electrician who helped us remove a chandelier and install a new chandelier (the West Elm three-light Champignon) and check or repair a few of the ceiling lights. While he and an assistant did that, Patrick and I tended to laundry and to storing various items that we delivered but did not yet unpack. Lunch specials with Patrick at Hulu Wa: black bean chicken with rice for Patrick, cashew chicken with rice for me. Green tea and hot and sour soup for both. After the soup course, Patrick's meal arrived first but then there was a minute or two before we could flag the waitron to request forks and napkins. She had brought the food but neglected to bring forks and napkins beforehand. Later the same thing happened to a woman seated at the table next to us. We took leftovers to go. Back to the new home. Laundry. Walked and rode Muni home. Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: mahi mahi burgers and fries with ketchup, hot water. I removed more screws from walls and also removed cable raceway using a hair dryer. We watched Everybody's Live s1:e2 with John Mulaney on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Thu Mar 20, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and blueberries; hot water. Move prep all day: removing screws and anchors from walls, packing. Midmorning snack: medium cheddar on sourdough toast, hot water. Lunch: leftovers from Hulu Wa, hot water. Afternoon snack: triscuitesque crackers with medium cheddar. Rode Uber with Patrick to dinner at Outerlands. Cocktails: River Crossing (bourbon, grapefruit, ginger, lemon, tiki bitters) for Patrick, Peach Pit Hi-Ball (peach pit scotch, peach liqueur, soda, bitters) for me. We shared: burrata (english pea, saba, lemon zest, arbequina, crostini), celery root soup (green apple, coconut milk, dill oil, creme fraiche), halibut (braised leeks, dino kale, citrus beurre blanc, shaved turnip). Dessert: chocolate rye cake (blood orange curd, tahini buttercream, candied blood orange). All food and drink and service by Kerri C were excellent. Rode Uber home. We watched Severance s2:e10 (season finale) on Apple TV+.

Fri Mar 21, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and blueberries; side of half banana; hot water. Move prep and moving all day: removing screws and anchors from walls, packing. Patrick arranged for Sam to ride Uber to SFO to pick up a rental car, and he helped us make two runs of moving smaller items to the new home. For lunch, we ate at Zona Rosa: chicken enchiladas and diet Coke for Sam, San Pancho chicken bowl and Jarritos mandarin for Patrick, carnitas quesadilla and Jarritos mango for me. All food and drink were delicious. Sam dropped us at home and took the rental car home with him. Later Patrick and I walked to dinner at Dumpling Specialist (415-640-1403, 1119 Taraval St) with Patrick: pan-fried pork bun (5 pieces), shanghai-style chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, steamed rice. Patrick particularly liked the quality of the chicken in the sweet and sour chicken. The sizes of the chicken pieces in this dish are also much larger than I had expected; at first glance I had thought we had been mistakenly served sweet and sour fish. All food was delicious. The tea was served warmish rather than hot, but we didn't complain about it. We had leftovers and ordered one steamed rice to go with them to balance against all the sweet and sour chicken that remained. $40.40 before tip. Walked home. I had meant to order our internet service today but was just too busy to remember. I ordered it after 5:00 p.m., so the order probably won't get processed until Monday. We watched Daredevil: Born Again s1:e3 on Disney+.

Sat Mar 22, 2025

Breakfast: small bowl of yogurt with toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, mexican vanilla, and blueberries; hot water. All day: Patrick, Sam, and I moved small items from old home to new home using a rental car. Late lunch at Cove Cafe with Patrick and Sam: 2-2-2 breakfast (bacon, french toast, eggs) side of grits for Patrick, Sam and I each had a French burger (blue cheese) medium well and a side of fries with ketchup. Coffee for Patrick, small OJ for Sam, chai tea with sugar and milk for me. Dinner at Sausage Factory with Patrick and Sam: we shared: sparkling water, Uncle Tony's prawns, caesar salad, small pepperoni and mushroom pizza. All food, drink, and service were excellent. Sam dropped us off at old home. It's our last night in the old home. Sam took the rental car home with him and will drop it off in the morning.

Sun Mar 23, 2025

Move day from old home to new home. Breakfast: Patrick and I ate pastries from the deli section of Whole Foods. Our moving company was Pure Moving who brought four men and a large truck. Patrick left early for the new home to ensure that the reserved space on the street was free of cars. Two cars had to be towed, which we felt terrible about, but the signs had been posted for days. All small items had already been moved, including all clothing. All desks and dressers had drawers removed. It took them three hours to wrap everything in plastic wrap and blankets and load the truck. They were polite and hardworking. One of them arrived 30 minutes after the others started. Our 2000 Restoration Hardware leather couch proved to be troublesome to get through the door. We had similar trouble when bringing it in. The door had to be removed, and today they removed two of the couch's feet. Eventually they got it through. They left in the truck and a car. I rode Muni to the new address. At the Muni stop, I noticed that Muni finally installed a working display in the bus shelter. The move took about five hours total: 8:21 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Afterwards Patrick and I lunched at Fable: we shared amalfi spritzes, the fried chicken sandwich with salad, and a cobb salad. All food, drink, and service by Nipun were excellent. We returned to new home and slowly began unpacking. Dinner: leftovers.

Mon Mar 24, 2025

Had trouble sleeping last night, more than normal. Breakfast: yogurt with diced dried peach. New home setup all day. Today I drilled the first hole in the wall and after .75 inches I encountered the concrete we knew to be inside the walls. I have no interest in buying or renting a hammer drill, so for this, anchoring the top of a bookcase to a wall for earthquake preparedness, I used a 75-pound, locking anchor with three nails. Lunch: leftover sweet and sour chicken with rice from Hulu Wa. Today was 76 degrees, but I did not get to enjoy it much because I was too tired and napped midday. Patrick joined me after a visit to his mom and the grocery. Dinner at home with Patrick on the balcony: basil and ricotta ravioli in tomato-vegetable soup, hot water. As expected, our order for internet service was processed today, and we expect hardware to arrive in two days. So this evening I showed Patrick how to tether his laptop to his phone, and he and I both completed some important tasks this way. We also ran the Bosch dishwasher for the first time tonight. It's very quiet. The kitchen sink faucet diverter seems to have stuck or broken. Tonight I also completed my paperwork to officially retire from UCSF.

Tue Mar 25, 2025

The Bosch dishwasher appears to clean dishes well. We ran hot water at the kitchen sink tap and used a single pod with the normal cycle. Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself one egg scrambled, one hash brown, one toasted english muffin with butter, one sumo orange, hot water. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to our old home in the Sunset District. We cleaned the floor and left our keys. We rode Uber to our new home. We walked to late lunch. We first tried Fratelli Brothers pizzeria but they did not have many pies in the window. We continued to Oz Pizza where Patrick got a pepperoni slice and soda fountain ginger ale and I got a veggie slice and soda fountain Sprite. Walked to new home. Continued unpacking and setting up new home.

Wed Mar 26, 2025

Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself one egg and cheddar on english muffin. Began cleaning the tops of the Tunhem cabinets when we received notice that our Internet service hardware had been delivered. I walked to the nearby UPS Store to pick up our Xfinity NOW router, then returned home and began installing it. It was troublesome to work with the very old network panel. There were about 10 coax cables coming into the panel, and seven were likely to be the one that I needed. I tried a few that did not work before I figured it out—it was the one feeding the splitter. I changed the login and password to the Xfinity box then set it in bridged mode and began setting up our mesh network router instead. The wifi signal reached farther than I had expected. I had expected the worst since wifi signals travel poorly in concrete construction. While working in the network panel, a part of our phone entry system broke because some wires fell out of a terminal and I tried for 30 minutes but was unable to repair the failure. Walked and rode Muni to old home to meet our landlord who inspected our old home and found everything in order. We said our thank yous and goodbyes. Patrick and I walked to and bought frozen dumplings from Asian American Food Company. Stopped for churros and hot beverages at Chalos. Rode Muni home. Resolved the phone entry problem by giving it more time and effort. Updates for devices. Continued wifi setup and config. Both printers are now set up, local backups are working again, and we have rudimentary wifi. For some reason, my laptop only gets 15 Mbps down whereas other devices are getting 120 Mbps, and I'm not sure why. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed dumplings with soy-garlic dipping sauce, hot water. Patrick cleared the table and loaded the dishwasher then went to bed. I stayed up continuing network troubleshooting. Late snack: one banana. I cleared remaining items from the kitchen sink and started the dishwasher. I realize we forgot to watch Everybody's Live, but the TV is not yet set up, and internet wasn't quite working well anyway.

Thu Mar 27, 2025

Breakfast at home: yogurt with blueberries, toasted coconut, mexican vanilla; hot water. Continued new home setup and cleaning all day. Later Patrick and I walked to lunch at El Tucan: carne asada taco and pollo asada mulita for me, super birria burrito for Patrick. We each had melon agua fresca. All food and drink were delicious. I don't think I ever had had a mulita before. It's sandwich-like and includes crispy cheese which provided interesting texture. Continued internet troubleshooting. Network cables arrived. Continued internet troubleshooting. Resolved a problem in which one laptop got 10 times slower speeds than another; the Smart Connect feature was not on I think due to long ago I was troubleshooting problems getting Wiz light bulbs to connect. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled cheese sandwiches and creamy tomato soup, hot water. Afterwards we joined Paul and Karl at Hi-Tops for drinks. I hadn't seen Karl in years. The bar was very crowded.

Fri Mar 28, 2025

Breakfast at home: yogurt with blueberries, toasted coconut, mexican vanilla; hot water. Continued new home setup and cleaning all day. Lunch at home with Patrick: Patrick made avocado salad and tomato soup and slice of sourdough toast with butter. I made 1.5 quesadillas with monterey jack shredded cheese, chives, and spices. Water to drink. Today included checking that the sleeper sofa still worked properly after the move, rearranging the living room so that the sofa was in the center of the room, finishing the cleaning of the Ikea Tunhem cabinets and beginning to nail the back panels to the shelves, and setting up the Roku TV and Apple TV. Dinner at home with Patrick: fish and chips from frozen, sparkling water for Patrick, hot water for me. Afterwards we watched Daredevil: Born Again s1:e5 on Disney+ with microwave butter popcorn and ginger beer and pieces of dark chocolate. We had already watched s1:e4 but it's not in my journal, and I don't recall what day that was. Or maybe I have some other error. Patrick went to bed. I wrote a testimonial and did some buying research for kitchen trash can and compost. Late snack: one sumo orange.
