Sat Feb 1, 2025
Washed dishes. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Washed dishes. Updated medical alert sheets. Cleaned in the bathroom. Repaired the lamp on the right side of Patrick's desk. There was something wrong with the switch. Sometimes we would turn it and it wouldn't turn the light on or off. But turning it more caused it to finally work. I removed it from the wall and inspected it, but I could find nothing to fix, and the switch was not something one was meant to take apart. When I tried to reproduce the problem, I could not. I put it back on the wall, then tested it again, and it seemed fixed. Cause unknown. Resolution unknown. Updates for home devices and websites. Patrick and I met with our landlord to negotiate a buyout agreement. Walked and rode Muni with Patrick to dinner at Hayes Street Grill: we shared: grilled Ventura calamari with Iacopi butter beans and arugula; black lentil soup with straus creamery yogurt; grilled Massachusetts scallops with celery root and potato puree, spinach, brown butter, and crispy capers; ACME bread and butter. Iced tea for Patrick, hot water with lemon for me. Dessert: Dorie Greenspan's carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. All food and drink were delicious. The calamari and scallops were both tender and flavorful. Service was mostly good but odd in places. For example, we told our waiter that we were sharing everything. The soup and calamari arrived simultaneously, so we simply swapped plates after eating half. The scallops arrived on a single plate, and our waiter handed Patrick an empty, cold plate. We split the plate ourselves, surprised that we had to do so. Also, our waiter brought Patrick's iced tea but neglected to bring my hot water with lemon until I reminded him a while later. Before we ordered the cake, Patrick asked if it would be served refrigerated or room temperature, and the worker said room temperature, which is the best way to have cake, and that's the way it came. Service style was perfunctory; I don't recall even learning the server's name. The bill arrived with nothing said more than, "Here you go." (But the table next to us was sent off by a different worker with, "Enjoy your symphony performance!") We tipped about 20% anyway. Something about this place reminded me a bit of Tadich Grill; perhaps the paneling on the walls (I think it's similar?) or the clientele (essentially everyone older than us) or the service style. We had arrived 15 minutes early for a 7:00 p.m. reservation. The restaurant was packed but they were still able to seat us. By the time we left it was half-empty; the tide depends on shows and events in its theatre district neighborhood. Afterwards we walked to SFJAZZ in the light rain for a delightful one-hour performance by The Queen's Cartoonists. I unfortunately had not napped earlier in the day and had fallen sleepy partway through but recovered by the end. Rode Uber home. Snack for Patrick: a handful of tortilla chips. Patrick went to bed. Late snack for me only: french fries from frozen with ketchup.
Sun Feb 2, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Nap. We walked to lunch. We attempted first to eat at New Taraval Cafe, but the line was too long. We then checked House of Pancakes, but again it was full. We instead ate at Dumpling Specialist: cabbage and pork wonton soup, shanghai dumplings, sticky rice roll. Hot tea for both. A worker mistakenly brought us fried pork buns and I had begun eating one before we realized it was a mistake. They did not charge us for it. All food and drink were delicious. Tea was oddly served in a paper 12-ounce cup. Patrick thought the shanghai dumplings were better than those at Yank Sing. The sticy rice roll was a particularly perfect combination of flavors and textures; it includes a youtiao fried chinese donut along its length as well as dried shredded pork. Beware: it is wrapped with plastic wrap that you need to remove before eating. As we left, I realized that someone had taken the black umbrella I had left in the 5-gallon bucket by the door. Mistake or thief? No way to know. Walked home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: halibut en papillote with white beans and olives, hot water. Afterwards we watched part of Jason Bourne. I think it was on Apple TV or Apple TV+. I can't recall if we had purchased it in the past. I had forgotten that I had seen it before without Patrick on January 21, 2017. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: one sumo orange, water.
Mon Feb 3, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Wind-down activities all day. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Lunch from Subway: turkey footlong sandwich, water from my water bottle. Worked in The Archive: retitled collections to use YYYY.MMDD date format at the beginning, uploaded some images, did some organizing. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to meet Bran and Stephen. Afterwards we dined at Castro Restaurant and Brewhouse (468 Castro St): masala chai for both. We shared: vegetable pakora, tandoori chicken, veggie korma mild, basmati rice. All food and drink were delicious. Service was good; a bit distracted by the simultaneous care of two small children which did not bother us much. About $60 after tax and before tip. The entire time we were the only customers dining but they received many takeout orders. The receipt said our server's name was Castro I. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni home.
Tue Feb 4, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Worked from home. Wind-down activities all day. Very rainy all day. Walked and rode Muni with Patrick to lunch at Cove Cafe: we shared a roast beef sandwich with grilled onions and swiss cheese, side of fries, and one pastrami reuben on dark rye (no side). Two hot teas: moroccan mint for Patrick, earl grey for me. Our receipt said our server's name was One O. $46.02 before a 20% tip. All food and drink were delicious. Service was very good. Afterwards we met Bran for about an hour for a momentous occasion. Later Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to Noe Valley Bakery: we shared a chocolate chip and pecan cookie and a coffee with cream. Walked and rode Muni home. I continued working. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. Afterwards we finished watching Jason Bourne then began watching Anthony Jeselnik: Bones and All on Netflix, pausing about halfway through. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Patrick drank a decaf iced green tea. I drank hot water. I had ordered fries with my sandwich, but they did not arrive in the bag, and the DoorDash interface did not make it possible to say that only the fries were missing. All food was delicious. We watched Severance s2:e4 on Apple TV+ then the remainder of Anthony Jeselnik: Bones and All on Netflix.

Sat Feb 8, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Over the past few days Patrick has been preparing us to move to a new home by packing things in boxes—mostly books and artwork. Today I removed many picture hangers from the walls and patched them with spackling. I also removed many 3M Command Strips from the walls and ceilings. More than half did not remove cleanly as the product had promised, but with a bit of work most of them are in a mostly-clean state. Upgraded to iOS 18.3 on my iPhone 16 Pro. Lunch at home: Patrick had hummus toast with pickled vegetables. I had cheddar and parsley in between two corn tortillas. We met with our landlord to discuss a buyout agreement. Later Patrick visited his mom and afterwards I met him for dinner at Dancing Yak (415-525-4857, 280 Valencia St). On the way Muni threw everyone out of the train and forced us to wait for the next train. Old fashioned nepal (turmeric and black pepper-infused bourbon, cardamom syrup, dash of angostura and cardamom bitters) for Patrick, goddess of the sky (mezcal, honey, turmeric syrup, citrus, amara nonino, egg white, hibiscus salt rim) for me. We shared: fish tawa (seared catfish seasoned with mustard powder, turmeric, and cumin), kale chaat (kale, yogurt, mint, tamarind, onions, tomatoes, potato—surprisingly crunchy), and watermelon salad (watermelon, feta, avocado oil, honey, garlic, turmeric). All food and drink were delicious. Service was very good. Afterwards we got gelato at Hila: Patrick got a one-scoop cup with half straciatella and half dark chocolate. I got a two-scoop small waffle cone with cherry chocolate on the bottom and coffee on top. Afterwards we stopped in at a shop filled with mostly antique cookware and glassware, and I chatted with the shopkeeper about ash trays that resembled human lungs. Walked and rode Muni home.
Sun Feb 9, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Old new computer setup all day, including troubleshooting problems with setting up local dev for Lodestar Quarterly. Lunch: I made for myself shells and cheese with cheese powder, peas, corn off the cob, cannellini beans, dill, and parsley. Cleaned the bathroom, cut my hair, showered, cleaned the bathroom. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom and tofu stir-fry with brown rice, hot water. Zoom chat with Dex and Lani. Late snack: creamy peanut butter on sourdough toast, hot water.
Mon Feb 10, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Wind-down activities all day. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Team meeting with Katherine and Suzan. Walked to lunch by myself at Irving Subs (1298 12th Avenue): chicken breast with melted medium cheddar on sweet roll, sea salt potato chips. Walked back to work. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: broccoli and gruyere frittata, hot water. We watched What We Do in the Shadows s6:e1 on Hulu then the remainder of Here on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Web edits and followup after person page was published by Vicky: Watanabe. Tried creating a saddle-stitch booklet document in Microsoft Word and failed. Wind-down activities all day. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Lunch in the hotel hub on 3: Karen's going away party. She is leaving School of Pharmacy to work in Department of Medicine in School of Medicine in hem-onc and will be at both Parnassus and Mission Bay. Sahru gave everyone a York peppermint patty and explained that today was National Peppermint Patty Day—delightful! Later I chatted with Bernard, also in the hotel hub. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: avocado, beet, and sumo salad; hot water. To bed early, exhausted.
Wed Feb 12, 2025
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Wind-down activities all day. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. 1:1 with Katherine. Lunch during a retirement webinar. I ate a Panda Express bowl with half chow mein, half mixed greens, and orange chicken. Water from my water bottle. My fortune: You will have an opportunity to shine this week. In the afternoon Karen stopped by with pastries with tropical fruit fillings, and I enjoyed one. Walked and rode Muni home. It took 45 minutes partly because I missed the bus by 2 minutes and had to wait 18 minutes for the next one but also because the driver left about 4 minutes late, probably for a good reason. Dinner at home with Patrick: ricotta-basil ravioli in tomato and vegetable soup. We reviewed retirement info. Patrick read his Kindle in bed before sleeping. I declassified and organized archived files.

Vacation day 1 of 4. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Packed for a short trip. Lunch at home with Patrick: we both had leftover fritatta. I also had a sumo orange. Water to drink. While eating we learned that our 3:05 p.m. flight was delayed until 6:05 p.m. so we cancelled the Uber we had reserved and waited. I cleaned the fridge. At around 2:40 p.m. we were notified that there was an additional 30-minute delay. We again cancelled the second Uber we had reserved, and we did not bother reserving again. Rode Uber to SFO. After passing through security, we visited a nice SFO Museum exhibit: Rosie the Riveter: Womanpower in Wartime. Dinner at Bourbon Pub: we shared a gem lettuce caesar salad and a bourbon burger (carmelized onions and mushrooms, bacon, gouda, truffle aioli, brioche bun) with fries and ketchup. Iced tea for Patrick, lemonade for me. $70.62 after tax and fees and a $10 tip. Service by Yan K was okay. While eating we were notified via the Alaska Airlines app that our flight was delayed a third time. At the gate a display told us our latest departure time: 7:09 p.m. We boarded. On the flight they removed our drinks and snacks cart and let us know that we would not be receiving drinks or snacks. The plane left the gate at 7:36 p.m., and the plane left the ground at 8:00 p.m. Rode Uber to Airbnb. Checked in to the Airbnb late with a bit of trouble because of poor lighting and lack of address signage and poor entry directions.
Fri Feb 14, 2025
Vacation day 2 of 4. Walked to breakfast with Patrick at La Terraza Cafe. We shared a La Terraza omelette and a yogurt parfait with granola and fruit, a complimentary chocolate concha, latte for Patrick, chai latte for me. All food and drink were delicious. We walked south along the ocean. We walked back to our Airbnb then walked to pick up a Turo rental a few blocks away. We drove to Hermosa Beach and walked around and along the pier. We drove around more trying to find where the giant Redondo Beach King Harbor sign led and decided it was nowhere interesting. We drove to Manhattan Beach and parked at metered parking paid by credit card. We walked around but not the length of the pier. We lunched at El Sombrero #One Mexican Restaurant. Chips and salsa to start. We requested a non-spicy salsa and they brought us what seemed like enchilada sauce instead of what I expected: pico de gallo. Patrick had Combo #7 with one hard shell beef taco and one cheese enchilada with rice and refried beans; horchata. I had one shredded hard shell beef taco; lemonade. The hard shell tacos have flat bottoms. $40.95 after a $6 tip for server Carmen. Afterwards we walked to Manhattan Beach Creamery for sweets. Patrick had mocha almond fudge ice cream in a cup, I had a microwave-heated chocolate chip cookie. They microwaved it on low heat, and it wasn't very hot. It was very droopy, but I didn't mind too much. We drove to and visited the free Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden and then visited Polliwog Park where part of the park had been consumed by the lake. We drove back to our Airbnb. Rested and napped. We drove to dinner at Primo Italia, sitting at the corner table (table 54) by the piano. We chatted briefly with owner Lou and pianist and singer Ayline Amirayan. Lou sang Fly Me to the Moon. Cocktails: classic Manhattan for Patrick, tequila daisy for me. We shared: pappardelle con cinghiale (wild boar), filetto di Manzo. Wine with the mains: contucci rosso di Montepulciano, nebbiolo funsu langhe. Dessert: we shared one order of tiramisu. Double espresso for Patrick, decaf coffee with cream for me. $166.65 before a $30 tip for Juan S. All service was very good. Afterwards we attended The Greatest Love of All: Belinda Davids in Concert at Norris Theatre, Palos Verdes Performing Arts. The show is a tribute to Whitney Houston. The opening song was Run To You, and the first half closer was The Greatest Love of All. The second half closer was I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). Encore: I Have Nothing. At intermission, we had a brief, nice chat with a woman seated behind us. Belinda Davids sings impeccably and seemingly effortlessly. Her voice is extremely reminescent of Whitney Houston yet she sets her own style. Her band and backup singer were all more talented than we had expected. Patrick especially liked the saxophone solo. Almost everyone in the audience was our age or older. The venue was comfortable. Drinks with lids were permitted, but not food. The show included several large screens which provided visuals and animations during the performance. I could have done without these, but they did not detract. The sound quality and lighting effects were both excellent. We had a great time. It was a very entertaining show. Drove back to our Airbnb.
Sat Feb 15, 2025
Vacation day 3 of 4. Patrick and I walked to breakfast at Wildflower Cafe. Patrick ordered two eggs over medium with pork sausage and rosemary-garlic toast and one pancake. He also declined the potatoes that came with his order but got them anyway. I got two eggs over easy with pork sausage and rosemary-garlic toast and potatoes. My eggs were cold but I didn't complain. Coffee for Patrick, earl grey tea for me. $41.50 before tip. Walked back to our Airbnb. Nap. We randomly drove to Neptune's Fountain and visited the shopping center there, stopping at Corners of the World where we met dog Rosie and her shopkeeper owner. We happened to see King's Hawaiian Bakery on the map and drove there but there was a 45-minute wait to eat, and we didn't want to wait. Instead we drove to Madre! for lunch: cocktails: mezcal margaritas ($14 each). We shared chicken mole negro ($24) and enchiladas verde with prawns ($25). All food and drink were delicious. Service by Rachelle was mostly good. Total was just over $100 after a $16 tip. Afterwards we drove to Del Amo Fashion Center and walked throughout the mall. We drove back to our Airbnb and napped. Dinner at Japonica Redondo (310-316-9477, 1304 1/2 S. Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach, CA 90277) with Patrick: oka = 28.00, truffle salmon = 10.99, white lightning = 18.99, hamachi davidson = 19.99, spider roll = 13.99, subtotal = 91.96, tax = 8.73, tip = 18.12, total = 118.81. Recommended. We walked back to our Airbnb. We watched Escape from New York on Amazon Prime.
Sun Feb 16, 2025
Vacation day 4 of 4. We drove a few blocks away to return our Turo car rental then walked to get breakfast burritos from Phanny's which had a dining room but it was closed. Patrick had bacon with no hash browns. I had sausage. We walked several minutes back to our Airbnb and ate there with Keurig coffee. The burritos are delicious and filling. Rested and packed. Checked out of the Airbnb. Rode Uber to LAX with a driver who drove unusually fast but seemed like he knew what he was doing. At the airport after going through security we ate at California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) which was serving only pizza and not the other non-pizza items on its menu: The Works and two iced teas. Our Alaska Airlines flight was uneventful. Rode Uber home. Unpacked. Archived documents. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed dumplings with soy-garlic dipping sauce, hot water. We watched Severance s2:e5 on Apple TV+. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.
Mon Feb 17, 2025
President's holiday. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Cleaned the bathtub, showered. Spent most of the day in bed—digestion issues. I skipped lunch in anticipation of a large dinner but had a very light snack in the midafternoon: hummus with everything flatbread crackers. Rode Uber with Patrick to dinner at Wayfare Tavern. We were seated upstairs at table 44. Cocktails: Bentley Reserve ($16, James E. Pepper Rye, Montenegro Benedictine, Foro Rosso, Amaretto Disaronno) for Patrick, Nourishing Nectar ($16, Barr Hill Gin, Barr Hill Honey Syrup, Lemon) for me. Complimentary popovers with piped whipped butter. The popovers are hollow and a bit crisp on the outside. They are served very hot and are not very buttery on their own. They are delightful to pull apart. The butter is perfectly easy to spread. We shared: dungeness crab cocktail ($28), caesar salad ($17, split onto two plates), Mary's organic fried chicken ($35), braised beef cheek stroganoff ($36, parisian gnocci, foraged mushrooms, dijon mustard creme fraiche, crispy potatoes, fresh herb horseradish). We ordered two glasses of wine with the meal: one tempranillo (El Coto 2019) and one sangiovese (Tenuta di Arceno 2021). For dessert we ordered the house-made donuts ($13) and the chocolate budino ($13), but we were told we didn't need the budino 😉, so just the donuts then. Surprise comped dessert alongside the donuts: two mini chocolate cupcakes with a message written in chocolate. Surprise treat, comped: two generous pours of 24-year-old tawny port. They also comped the two glasses of wine. All food and drink were excellent. Service by Ericka W was very good, but we noticed that no one crumbed the table. $220.37 after a $35 tip. So satisfying. We took three pieces of chicken home via Uber. To bed.

Afterwards we had some time to kill, so we stopped at Blush! for drinks: Patrick had a glass of verdicchio ($14), I had mulled wine ($8). Americano Social Club played, and we tipped $10 cash. Walked and rode Muni home.
