Mon Jan 1, 2018

Breakfast: leftovers. Rode Muni to the Castro with Patrick. Lunch at Le Marais Bakery with Patrick: two cappuccinos, croque madame for Patrick, croque poulet for me, one eggnog macaron. Our capps arrived quickly, but the food order was significantly delayed, so our waiter treated us to two extra macarons: one was peppermint and the other was candy corn. We saved the peppermint for last which was a good choice. Inside it was like a York peppermint patty. The candy corn macaron was good, but we both thought the eggnog one was even better. The sandwiches were huge and delicious. I ate only half of mine, and Patrick took a small portion of his home. The restaurant is charming, loud, and includes the long delays in service that you'd expect from a Parisian cafe. Service non compris, however, so remember to tip. $51.71 after a $7 tip. Before and after we walked some in the Castro. Rode Muni home. Rested. Finished watching When Harry Met Sally via iTunes rental with Patrick. Continued organizing things in the garage. Dinner alone since Patrick wasn't hungry: my leftovers from lunch. Watched The Big Short (2015) on Netflix instant watch by myself.

Tue Jan 2, 2018

Light breakfast: leftovers. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Laurel Heights. Identity retheme work all day. Chatted with Eric and James a bit about content maintenance issues and rollout. Lunch at Beautifull!: curry tofu bowl with brown rice. Filed pcard paperwork. Various task followup. Rode UberX to the Inner Sunset. Dentist appointment. Bought two ricciarelli at Arizmendi Bakery. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs slow-roasted beef barbacoa tacos with salsa roja. Patrick added some shredded mixed cheeses that we separately had. Dessert: ricciarelli, sweet wine. Explored channels new to us on Roku via our TCL television.

Wed Jan 3, 2018

Breakfast at home: one egg scrambled on english muffin with cheddar cheese, 8 ounces of orange juice, 1.5 pints of hot water. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Began new year html email work. Began email mailing list update tasks. Today I gave James J a Zippo handwarmer that wasn't a good fit for my needs. Left work a little early. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Walked to 9th and Judah. Rode Muni home. Set up my 2012 iMac in the garage for a seller to buy it. He arrived with a friend, and I showed him the iMac. We three then drove to the UPS Store in West Portal to notarize a bill of sale that he prepared and which he and I signed. We returned to my place, and I packed the iMac and helped him carry it to his car. I charged $799, which I thought was a fair price and a great return on a five-year-old computer. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs farro fried "rice" with maitake mushrooms, baby spinach, and pea shoots. This meal was good except that the soy seasonsing sauce was a small quantity that did not provide a hint at how concentrated it was. The dish turned out very salty. We ate enough to fill our stomachs, but we decided to not keep the leftovers. Dessert: TJ's candy cane jo-jo's—one for Patrick, two for me. Sweet wine for both. Worked more on the new year html email; I just couldn't stop.

Thu Jan 4, 2018

Breakfast at home: granola with sliced banana and milk, 8 ounces of orange juice, 2 pints of hot water. There was a 4.4 earthquake at 2:39 AM; I was asleep and did not feel it. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. New year html email work. I tried to lunch at b on the go, but it was closed. Lunch at Yum Yum Hunan: lunch special: hot and sour soup, scallops and broccoli with brown rice and side egg roll: $16 after a $2 tip. My fortune: A phone call to a good friend will ease your mind and lift your spirits. Took a break from html email work and started over reading Making Work Work by Shola Richards (dead tree version) and read a few chapters. Then I began reading Web Typography 1.1.0 via purchased PDF by Richard Rutter. Rode Uber Pool Express home: $3.85 before a $1 tip. Dinner at home with Patrick: two kinds of spaghetti: a thai green chicken curry for Patrick. For me: green garlic yogurt, pea sprouts, and parsley. (The curry was too spicy for me.) Lately we have been trying a new kind of flavored sparkling water called Alta Panna, and we like it. Dessert: one TJ's candy cane jo-jo each with sweet wine.

Fri Jan 5, 2018

Breakfast: leftovers, one sliced apple. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Mailing list update work. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Bought more cheddar powder at Spice Ace. Lunch at Out The Door Bush Street: five-spice chicken with vermicelli noodles and green leaf chiffonade, magnolia blossom fragrance (oolong) yu lan xiang hot tea. Walked the whole way back since a shuttle was not due for a while at Mt. Zion. Helped Joel with a question about SMS messages not received in Messages on his Mac laptop. Identity retheme work: IE11/Win10 fixes with much headache over flexbox containers extending wider than their containers. Partial fix: set a max-width in pixels on the flex container; setting max-width in percentage did not work but px did. Errand: hardware store. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: turkish beef kebab salad with pita, red wine, san pell.

Sat Jan 6, 2018

Breakfast at home: dos tacos using leftover beef from last night, one mandarin, hot water, 8 ounces of orange juice. Made a mounting template in InDesign CC for mounting a Tripp-Lite power strip and surge protector. Mounted two of those in the bedroom. Used 3M Command Round Cord Clips to route an extension cord along the underside of the bed. Helped Patrick finish moving into the bedroom. Repaired a loose shelf support for a bookshelf. Rinsed the outdoor compost bin. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs sesame chicken with brown rice, bok choy, and mushrooms; red wine; Alta Panna. We aren't disappointed by Good Eggs meals often. For this one we found the dressing too light; this tasted more like garlic chicken than sesame chicken. Watched about two-thirds of Hidden Figures on Netflix DVD with Patrick and popcorn. Emptied 4.5 of 12 drawers in the mule chest of my stuff in preparation for giving Patrick half of it.

Sun Jan 7, 2018

Breakfast: leftovers. Cut my hair, showered. Rode UberX to the Castro with Patrick. Dinner at Lark with Patrick: garides small plate to share (prawns, brussel sprouts, artichokes, olives, fresh tomatoes and white wine lemon butter caper sauce, $15), rib eye (our receipt said brizola steak) with kurdish bulgur and vegetables for Patrick ($36), roasted boneless half chicken (our receipt said kotopoulo) which wasn't boneless with kurdish bulgur and vegetables for me ($24), one glass of rivale sangiovese each ($14 each). I enjoyed the food and service, but at $132 after a $20 tip it seems that there are much better values in the neighborhood. Patrick decided that he did not need to return. Afterwards we checked out bars on 18th from Moby Dick to The Edge to see which was most happening. Midnight Sun and The Edge were the liveliest probably because both of these bars were showing the Golden Globe Awards on television. We decided on Midnight Sun and stayed until a little after the end of the show. Rode UberX home. Completed emptying the mule chest of my stuff in preparation for giving Patrick half of it.

Mon Jan 8, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: egg and cheddar on english muffin, 8 ounces of orange juice. Heavy rain today. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Today's ride was the first time someone (Jacob) from the upstairs unit in our house got the same ride as me. Sprint standup. Short 1-on-1 with Eric. Customized a University Relations document template for Cindy to use as a kind of OSACA letterhead at her request, sent it to her for review. Identity retheme work. Patrick notified me today that the leak in our small bedroom had returned with today's heavy rain. Luckily I had set out a bowl in anticipation of this problem—no damage to our belongings. Handed off the new year html email draft to Susie and Robin for review. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Lunch from Panda Express: panda bowl with chow mein and orange chicken, water from my water bottle. My fortune: Your biggest battle will be won with the help of others. Filled my water bottle at the water filling station near Palio. Errand: the bank. Continued working from Kalmanovitz Library on floor 3 near the cafe. After some time, a fire alarm sounded and everyone evacuated the library. I packed all my belongings and continued working from the Dean's Office Administration. Rode Uber Pool Express home. This ride was $2.74 before a $1.00 tip; Uber Pool Express is getting crazy cheap. Inspected the leak in the small bedroom. Water drips from the center top of the window sill, and a portion of the wall below the window frame is very damp. Dinner at home with Patrick: red beans with ham and rice and garlic bread, red wine (me only), san pell. Vacuumed a little. Watched "Oprah Winfrey Receives Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes" and "Oprah Winfrey - 2018 Golden Globes - Full Backstage Speech" on YouTube.

Tue Jan 9, 2018

Breakfast at home: yogurt with slice banana, one sliced pear, two mandarins. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Followup with Greg C and Greg L about pcweb. Sent Cindy a new draft of the OSACA special letterhead following her feedback. Identity retheme work: lots of task resolution and cleanup and resolved some issues with Eric and James H. Lunch at Rigolo: cow burger with mushrooms and gruyere, french fries. I was too full to eat the included pickle slice. New year html email work: revisions following Robin's feedback. At 5:00 pm, Eric confirmed that we are scheduled to push live the identity retheme work I have been working on for the past twoish years. Identity retheme post-launch content work: removed meatball links. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Walked to 9th and Judah. Muni bus 66 left two minutes before its scheduled departure time. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Took about an hour to get home door to door. Cost: $2.74 plus a one dollar tip. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers from last night, san pell, red wine for me. Dessert: one TJ's candy cane jo-jo each. Today Patrick moved his clothes into the mule chest and removed the black dresser he had been using; he plans to get rid of it. Recently my Bose QuietComfort QC25 noise-cancelling headphones stopped working properly. The problem is that the right speaker intermittently crackles or cuts out, usually while the headphones are moved very slightly. For example, chewing while eating popcorn with the headphones on caused the problem to happen. This evening I looked online for solutions and was disheartened to find that this was an extremely common problem. I decided to not have them repaired and plan to buy new headphones to replace them. Unfortunately, Bose has several top picks on The Wirecutter, including the QC25 that have just failed me. Since I no longer plan to buy anything from Bose, the replacements I'm considering now are Apple's Airpods, the Sennheiser HD-1 Wireless, and the Bang & Olufsen H8.

Wed Jan 10, 2018

Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Tested the identity retheme project on test.* for pharmacy, pc, bts, cp, and pharmd. Followup with Diana K about email list update data. Finalized the OSACA special letterhead template for Cindy. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Lunch at My Ivy: beef noodle soup. Walked to UCSF Laurel Heights. Followup with Robin and Susie about the new year card greeting. Met with Eric and James H about styling issues for content maintenance work. Continued reading from Richard Rutter's Web Typography via purchased PDF. Watched Eric resolve issues with printing Avery labels for the new year greeting dead tree version. Identity retheme work: attempted to resolve some stylesheet problems with IE11/Win10 but could not figure it out and marked it will-not-fix. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: roasted whole chicken, green garlic potatoes, side salad, white wine, san pell. Today I learned that Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) interferes with Enter Time Machine. If "Virus and Spyware Protection" is not disabled, entering Time Machine results in slow, almost unresponsive behavior.

Thu Jan 11, 2018

The identity retheme project I have been working on for the past few years became live this morning. I encountered a problem with the search box appearing incorrectly off the page to the right on my iPhone 6 Plus and was unable to reproduce this problem in a browser set to a small width or in iOS Simulator. Other than that, seemingly no issues. Pre-breakfast: a third of a banana. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. This was the first time I ever saw Apple Carplay in a car; it looked nice. Breakfast from The View Cafe: egg, cheese, and bacon on english muffin; coffee (verona) with half and half. Chatted with Eric and the team about the search box on mobile problem and about grammar (is data singular or plural?). Eric was unable to duplicate the search box problem, but James H was able to. Continued reading from the dead tree version of Shola Richards' Making Work Work. Refreshed all local dev databases. Snack: Grant gave me a mandarin. Lunch from The View Cafe: veggie california on rye, water from my water bottle. Identity retheme post-launch work: textarea slightly too wide here, should prolly match widths of inputlines; change pharmd landing pages to have dark blue bg; change the call to action from class="button" to class="action"; chrome/ios9, safari/ios10: search box missing; on pharmd home page, remove possibility to scroll right to see empty blueness; PharmD student profiles. Made a custom version of the curriculum chart for Marcus F at Susie's request. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers, white wine, san pell. Dessert: one TJ's candy cane jo-jo each.

Fri Jan 12, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs, grilled potatoes with herbes de provence, sausage, english muffin with butter, san pell. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Microsites work: NMR Lab setup, began project closure procedures for recently launched websites. Calendar management. Lunch at Artesano: black bean soup, albondigas, water. Content work: added photo for Ravinder S. Followup with new year html email greeting. Mailing list work with Eric. Followup with NMR team. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs wild mushroom and roasted onion pizza. The dough for this pizza turned out a terrible-tasting crust so bad that Patrick complained about it and we received a generous credit. It doesn't happen often with Good Eggs, so we're happy that their response was appropriate. Recently Patrick rejoined Facebook after a long absence. I intended to attend a onesie party at Lookout tonight but decided at the last hour that I temporarily wasn't feeling well enough and did not go.

Sat Jan 13, 2018

Breakfast: three mandarins, two pints of hot water. Home improvement work: installed cord clips behind the bed in the larger bedroom adjusted wobble wedges under two bed legs, vacuumed. Rode Muni with Patrick to Castro Station. Errand with Patrick: eye doctor for an adjustment to his recently received glasses. To kill time before our brunch reservation we browsed clothes for a few minutes at R by Rolo. Brunch at Finn Town with Patrick: coffee for two with cream, cocktails: gypsy for Patrick, world's greatest lover for me; entrees: corned beef hash for Patrick, fried chicken and pumpkin waffles with side of salad greens for me. We enjoyed the food and drinks, service by Cooke was very good, and all the staff we encountered seemed notably polite. We were worried that not everything would fit on our table; we removed a few unneeded items, and it all worked out in the end. Noise level was medium high and not as bad as I had encountered in the past. We sat in the middle section across from the front bar, Patrick with his back to the wall. $80.12 before a $15 tip. Afterwards we got drinks at Philz on Castro Street: large mint tisane for Patrick, large chai with milk and lightly sweet for me. We read from dead tree books: The Spider's House by Paul Bowles for Patrick, reread of Food Rules by Michael Pollen for me. Rode Muni home. House chores: swept the driveway in front of the house and removed some weeds. Unpacked then installed rug pads and thick shag rugs in the larger bedroom. More vacuuming. Patrick napped while I washed a lot of dishes. I gave away a bunch of cardboard boxes to Megan via Nextdoor who arrived with a friend to help. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs meatballs and ragu with creamy polenta, side salad with meyer lemon vinaigrette, san pell, red wine. Dessert: one each of the last of the TJ's candy cane jo-jo's. Washed and dried dishes. Watched part of Kong: Skull Island (2017) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. It's laughable at times, but it very much delivers on action and memorable visuals. Patrick went to bed. Made adjustments to the felt pads softening drawer closure on the mule chest so that the drawers more properly aligned flush with the frame.

Sun Jan 14, 2018

Slept in. Lunch: leftovers. Organized stuff. Continued watching Kong: Skull Island on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Tried to order King of Thai Noodle but realized that they had not opened yet. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken, rice, and mushroom soup, alta palla, red wine for Patrick. Rode UberX to Chinatown. Met Drew, Phil, Romeo, Richard, and Michael for a stage performance of Cabaret at Great Star Theatre. At intermission I got a rose beer ($5) which I enjoyed. I described the performance as "a step above shoestring budget." It was of uneven quality overall; the best singing came from the woman playing Sally Bowles. The sound and lighting seemed perfect except for (a) one moment when an audio feedback loop gained in volume and intensity for a few seconds before it was resolved and (b) a dark spot towards stage left when the rest of the stage was reasonably lit. Afterwards Richard, Michael, and I had a late meal at Comstock Saloon: beets with goat cheese (pomegranate jus, parsley oil, toasted hazelnuts) and lo mein cacio e pepe (pecorino, parmesan, Szechuan pepper) and a beer for them, cow burger and a glass of tempranillo for me. Rode UberX home.

Mon Jan 15, 2018

Rode Muni to Van Ness Station. Walked to SF Ballet. Met Bertha and Raina and all the Honmas except for the two boys. Raina was admitted to her audition for a summer program. The rest of us breakfasted at The Grove Hayes Valley and chatted for a few hours. I ate a breakfast sandwich with a side of hash browns. I showed Chomp by Christopher Niemann to the kids, and they enjoyed playing with it a while. Afterwards we remet Raina and said goodbyes to Bertha and Raina. I joined the Honmas for urban adventures. We parked at Van Ness Avenue Parking near Beach Street then walked to Hyde Street Pier where we visited three ships—C.A. Thayer, Eureka, Hercules—while they were free today on MLK Jr. Day. My favorite was the Eureka, a passenger ferry. We walked towards Pier 39, observing streetside seafood restaurants. We stopped at Pier 45's Musée Mechanique, then got a bite to eat at Alioto's to go counter: bread bowl, fries, calamari. Occasionally other diners would accidentally drop a cardboard tray of food and we would observe the birds attacking the food until it was gone in seconds. A street busker played Madonna's "La Isla Bonita" and other favorites on steel drums. We walked to Ghirardelli Square. The ice cream shop with the entrance off Larkin Street was a bit full, so we went to the other shop deeper in the square and it was a little less full. The free chocolate sample today was Valentine's Strawberry Bark. Bonus was the great view of Alcatraz from our table. They ordered and shared a single mint chocolate shake. Afterwards we returned to the car and drove to Cafe Bakery and Restaurant at 1365 Noriega Street where Lani bought dim sum to go. They dropped me off at home, leaving me with a few gifts: garlic bread from 85 Degrees Bakery, ginger snaps made by Kiana, and a box of dark chocolate macadamia nut clusters and a Sunrise kona coffee blend from Hawaii. Dinner at home with Patrick: tandoori chicken over green onion rice with vadouvan carrots, san pell, red wine. Finished watching Kong: Skull Island (2017) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Watched Superstore s3:e8 on Hulu Base Plan with Patrick. According to the Apple Health app on my iPhone 6 Plus, I walked 10,020 steps today.

Tue Jan 16, 2018

Breakfast at home: greek yogurt with diced pear. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Professional Staff Development 1 of 5 with David. Partway through the power and lights went out in our room. After a few more minutes while we waited for news about the problem David dismissed the class for the day. Lunch: leftovers. I spent the rest of today building a new NMR website from the existing website. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Doctor appointment. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: cow burgers with sliced gouda, caulitots, san pell, red wine for me. I did not like the caulitots at all.

Wed Jan 17, 2018

Breakfast at home: egg and cheddar on english muffin, one pint of hot water. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Orgchart work for Cindy and Ravinder: education unit. Logo work for Susie: sent a sample. Lunch at Vixi: fettuccini with sausage and chicken in creamy mushroom sauce, bread and dipping sauce, hot water. Email mailing list update work. Sent NMR Lab microsite to their team for review, then made a few edits based on feedback returned. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: tortellini with lacinato kale, garlic, and alfredo; san pell. Dessert: one dark chocolate macadamia nut cluster each. Troubleshot my InDesign template for mounting a power strip. It seems it was not printing at 100% but I'm not sure why. Even after rechecking and tweaking print settings I still could not get it to print at the correct dimensions. Our inkjet printer prints it closer to proper scale than our laserjet printer does. Tomorrow we expect rain, so we set out our bowls to gather drips since our landlord has not yet resolved the problem in our small bedroom that we encountered a week or two ago. I changed my mind about not fixing my Bose QC25 headphones and instead ordered a prepaid shipping box from fixheadphones.com which has a base repair price of $49.99. We'll see how they turn out. Listed some things for sale on craigslist.

Thu Jan 18, 2018

Patrick prepared scrambled eggs with chopped ham, tomatoes, and green onion; hash browns; pork sausage; english muffin with butter; orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Made live changes to action links and notified content owners. Updated Academic Affairs content for Diana K. Spent much of today reworking the PharmD student profiles content to look better. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Lunch at My Father's Kitchen #6. My seat was positioned in an extremely cold part of the room because a rear door was opened to provide cool air to the kitchen. The cold draft stopped after several minutes, and my soup arrived quickly to warm me. I had ordered a vietnamese hot coffee, but it never arrived. I didn't miss it much since the food had arrived so quickly, and when I paid they were very apologetic and removed it from my bill. While waiting for my returning shuttle ride I encountered and chatted with M. Eric and I worked on spreadsheets updating the email mailing list in Mailchimp in order to send the new year greeting, which was scheduled for tomorrow morning. Met Patrick at The Marker Hotel for ArtSpan Hotel Hop!, in which two art showings take place in nearby hotels. We stayed for about an hour, enjoying the art and the provided refreshments. Dinner at Tratto (501 Geary Street): drinks: tratto for Patrick, vecchio cubano for me, san pell for both; appetizers: butter beans, complimentary foccacia; entrees: mushroom pizza, chicken breast; dessert: tiramisu (which was perfect). Service by Andrea was very good. $93.42 before a $16 tip. Rode UberX home. In preparation for arriving at tonight's event, I learned that there is Geary Boulevard and there is Geary Street and they are not the same.

Fri Jan 19, 2018

Breakfast at home: one pear, two mandarins, one apple. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Mastered new assets for video titles for Eric. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: cow tacos with black beans and fixins, alta palla, pinot noir. Watched Superstore s3:e9 and s3:e10 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Watched New Orleans Television on Roku. Connected my Flickr account to the Roku. Last time I tried I encountered problems with entering my login and password. This time Roku gave me a URL to ease the authentication process, and I had no trouble.

Sat Jan 20, 2018

Breakfast at home: leftovers. Finally finished watching Black Mirror s1:e2. Rode UberX to the Castro with Patrick. Errand: optometrist. Lunch at Slurp! Noodle Bar: shrimp pad thai for Patrick, slurp ramen for me, green tea and water for both: $37.70 before a $6 tip. Service by Keith H was very good. Rode Muni home with Patrick. Home improvement: resolved the problem with the surge protector mounts from a few weeks ago by measuring again and in one case redrilling all the mount holes anew. Installed a third surge protector by the larger bedroom door. Cleaned and washed the Black and Decker small vacuum. Emptied the paper shredder. Nap. Rode Uber Pool downtown. Dinner with Romy, Drew, Phil, and Paul at Michael Mina. We had cocktails to start and did the five-course tasting ($145 per person) and chose wine from bottles instead of pairings. Because of the complexity I can't recall everything we ate. Paul ordered almost entirely differently than the rest of us. I happened to make all the same course selections as Drew. Before ordering I wondered, "How would they do a shabu shabu here?" because it was on the menu and we found out because Paul had ordered it. A small pot of hot broth arrives with the rest of the plate, and the meat is swished in the broth with chopsticks by the wait staff. Service from all was impeccable: timely, efficient, polite, napkins folded almost immediately after one departs for the restroom, etc. Foods were frequently served in trios. We started with a complimentary amuse bouche trio and ended with a complimentary confection trio. Afterwards Drew drove (!) and dropped Paul and me near Paul's place. Paul went home. I walked to the Castro and barhopped; everyone else was too tired to join. I looked in at but did not enter The Cafe (where to my surprise a doorman said he recognized me from earlier visits). Ms. Jackson spun at Beaux, where I stayed a while enjoying the music, different and much better than what I usually hear at Badlands or Toad Hall. I briefly visited 440. Haute Toddy spun at QBAR but I didn't enter. Midnight Sun was mostly empty. I had a drink at Toad Hall, meeting Denmark and Brian whose women friends were having a disagreement. Back to Midnight Sun where I stayed a while. Mushroom pizza slice at Nizario's: $4 before a $1 tip. Rode Uber Pool home. Of all the bars I visited, only 440 seemed particularly full of gay patrons; the rest seemed a lot more mixed than I recall from previous visits.

Sun Jan 21, 2018

Slept in. Breakfast: leftovers. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftovers. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: taco leftovers with new tortillas. Watched part of Baby Driver on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Replaced a power strip surge protector and reorganized the charging station in the smaller bedroom. Reorganized the pens and pencils in the antique writing desk so that the drawer doesn't jam. Deleted the iOS app called Pinner, which has crashed on me for the last time. Tried another free Pinboard app but it didn't have a way to let me see only my unreads. Added a Safari shortcut to m.pinboard.in to my home screen.

Mon Jan 22, 2018

Breakfast at home: greek yogurt with diced apple and banana. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Lots of identity retheme and issue queue task followup and identity retheme and other styling work. Extracted vector-based graphics for the web from a pdf for Paula. Delivered an old photo of MW to Sandra S at her request. Lunch to go from The View Cafe: veggie california on rye: $5, ate at my desk. Also ate two mandarins that I had brought from home. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Muni times did not look favorable, so I rode Uber Pool Express home for $2.75 before tip. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken cacciatore with angel hair pasta. Dessert: one dark chocolate macadamia nut cluster each. Finished watching Baby Driver on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Afterwards I watched some of the DVD extras and some of the scenes from the film by myself.

Tue Jan 23, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: greek yogurt with sliced apple and cinnamon, apple flax muffins. We talked about breakfast cereals. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Professional Staff Development 2 of 5 with David. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Lunch at My Ivy: yellow curry with tofu and vegetables, hot thai tea. Walked back. Orgchart work: BTS. Lots of task followup and organizing. Susie gave me a ride home. Dinner at home with Patrick: adobo chicken enchiladas with cilantro rice, red wine, san pell. Dessert: one dark chocolate macadamia nut cluster each. Began thinking about abandoning Pinboard due to slowness and search hiccups in which searching on things I know I have bookmarked don't appear in my search results. Also because Pinner for iOS crashed on me a fair amount. Possible migration suggestions I found: Diigo, DEVONthink, Workflowy, and maybe Instapaper.

Wed Jan 24, 2018

Breakfast at home: greek yogurt with cinnamon, diced apple, and sliced banana. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Finalized troubleshooting a problem with Andrew P: connecting to sandbox.ucsf.edu from ssh; I was unable to resolve the problem. Microsites work: Submitted a ticket to IT to remove a now-unneeded domain for DSU Lab. Followup with NMR Lab. Began styling work for content metadata work that James H had completed. Rode UberX from UCSF Laurel Heights to the Castro. Dinner at Poesia with Patrick: prosecco for me, white wine for Patrick, sparkling water for both; tagliere salumi e formaggi (salami and cheese platter) for one for Patrick, pappa pomodoro (bread soup) for me; pasta nera (squid ink pasta) for Patrick, branzino (whole mediterranean sea bass with grilled brussels sprouts) for me. For dessert we shared one cannolo. $118.27 before a $23 tip. Rode UberX home. Installed updates for the old MacBook Air which now runs Plex Media Server and serves files to and from external hard drives for data masters and backups. Did some research to determine how best to simplify our living room entertainment setup in terms of a DVD player. Currently we use my MacBook Pro with an Apple SuperDrive, but it requires plugging five things in, moving a power adapter, and changing a setting on the Logitech Z906 speaker system. Continued research to abandon Pinboard.

Thu Jan 25, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: ham, vegetables, and cheese scramble, half each of an english muffin. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Mailchimp mailing list work. Lunch at Yum Yum Hunan: hot and sour soup, sweet and sour fish with brown rice, egg roll. My fortune: It is the hope and dreams we have that make us great. Plancomm team outing at The Wild Hare. Eric, Grant, and I walked. The rest drove or rode. We enjoyed bar bites and various libations. Susie gave me a ride home. Dinner at home with Patrick: tacos redux, red wine, san pell. Trip planning with Patrick: SLO and San Simeon.

Fri Jan 26, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: egg scramble, hash browns, sausage, english muffin with butter, orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Various theme adjustments. Prepped a new html email template for BTS news. Lunch at desk: leftovers from yesterday's lunch. Identity retheme work: pushed styling for another attempt to resolve the problem of search box appearing off page to the right on iOS 10 (and other?) devices. Submitted comments about a BTS news notice for Susie. Filed pcard paperwork. Helped Susie with the review of a print publication by Lemonly. Lots of Asana task followup. Submitted a request to IT to reimage my 2012 iMac; Eric plans to use it for our video training recording station. Read more from Richard Rutter's Web Typography. Rode Uber Pool Express to the Castro. Recently the remote control on our Logitech Z906 speaker system stopped working reliably. I noticed today that if I pressed the volume down button normally it would not work as expected, but if I pressed it very hard it would work as expected. This gave me confidence to open it and see if it could be fixed. I found that a thin wire routing power was in close proximity to a metal edge for the opposite side of the power. I bent the wire so that it was further away. I reinserted the batteries and tested—it worked. I reassembled the whole device and retested—it worked. (Later I learned that it stopped working. See February 1.) Shower. Rode UberX with Patrick to the Castro. Dinner at Eureka with Chris G, Andy T, and Patrick. Breakfast at home: cheddar on english muffin, a pint of hot water. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Posted a new BTS orgchart. Attempted to resolve a problem in which I discovered that I had lost an entire note of my ideas in Notational Velocity. The data loss occurred maybe a week ago by accident. I had been typing too quickly and accidentally pressed a key combination to select a large amount of text then pressed Delete. I immediately tried undoing it and it seemed successful at the time, but now when I tried to find the same note it no longer appears. I then determined that both my cloud backup and my Time Machine backup were excluding the Application Support folder where the NV database is stored. I had previously manually added those exclusions thinking I could save space and processor time, and I now recognize that as a mistake. I am sad to have lost my list of ideas and wish apps like NV were better at recovering from these kinds of errors. Lots of styling work. Lunch at desk: leftover risotto, water.
