Afterwards we visited Kerry and Mom Ryan then Patrick and I walked to Thai House Express for lunch: crispy chicken rice plate and thai iced tea for Patrick, chinese broccoli with beef rice plate and thai arnold palmer for me. I had never had a thai arnold palmer before, and I found it interesting. Presumably it is half thai iced tea and half lemonade, and it tasted like that. Sat Nov 9, 2024
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; slice of autumn-spiced, frosted quick bread; hot water. Did mostly nothing all day. Lunch at home: a small bowl of leftover yellow eye beans with steamed white rice, hot water. Napped with Patrick. Cleaned the bathroom. Dinner at home with Patrick: green veggie and mushroom steamed buns with peanut cucumber noodle salad from the Millbrae farmer's market. Patrick and I attempted to ride Muni to the Castro, but at 19th and Taraval the train stopped because of an undisclosed problem. The operator was unable to proceed because another train ahead of us was stalled in the next block. After perhaps 5 or 10 minutes we abandoned Muni and rode Uber to an event at The Academy: Speakeasy Cocktail Experience, meeting Bernard there a few minutes late. Following a round of alcoholic amuse we now can't recall, Patrick and I enjoyed flights of whiskey (Patrick) and rum (me) which included three generous tastings followed by a cocktail of your choice made with one of the tastings of your choice. Bernard drank sauv blanc instead of a flight. We chatted about wine cellars, autism, dating, dating apps, IHOP, Sinead O'Connor, muscles, handwarmers, and more. At the end, following a roll of dice, we each received a lagniappe for later use. Afterwards we three walked to The Mix and mingled and crowdwatched on the patio. Late bites at Hot Johnnie's: onion rings mostly for Patrick, waffle fries mostly for me. Hot Johnnie's was closing, so we returned with our food in a paper bag and ate on the sidewalk outside The Mix. Bernard broke off with his friend Chris and others to—probably—Badlands. Patrick and I rode Uber home.

Breakfast with Patrick: one slice each of the last of the autumn-spiced, frosted quick bread. Water to drink. I also had a small glass of cold milk. Afterwards we attempted to ride Muni to 9th and Irving, but the next 66 bus was in 24 minutes. We rode bus 48 to 19th and Quintara hoping to catch bus 28, but there was a group of perhaps 80 persons dressed in military uniforms already waiting. We chose to walk north on 19th to Judah. We waited 10 minutes for the N-Judah train to take us to 9th and Irving. This trip took us about 30 minutes instead of the expected 15. We placed our name third on the waitlist at Art's Cafe and were seated outdoors in about 10 minutes. Service was extraordinarily slow, but when it arrived it was notably polite. We later noticed a help wanted sign in the window. Patrick had bulgogi breakfast with two eggs sunny side up, hash browns, and sourdough toast with butter ($16.25). I had hash brown melt with two eggs scrambled and wheat toast with butter ($12.75). Coffee with cream for both ($6.50). All food and drink were excellent. I tipped 20% despite the slowness because it was very clear that they were doing the best they could within a broken system. Patrick and I caught bus 44 at just the right time (finally Muni works as expected!) to the concourse then walked to the de Young Museum, meeting Susie and Jeff at the cafe. Everyone had coffee except me, and Jeff enjoyed a slice of cake. We chatted about Spain, tapas, flamenco, Portugal, expat life, retirement, pastries, Vienna, Prague, tourism backlash, The Met in New York City, homebuying, homeownership, remodeling, recent election results, positivity, and more. They got us in on their membership to see the Tamara de Lempicka exhibit, which we loved. A few of my faves: Young Girl in Green, some of the silk dresses, the sole male nude from Harvey Fierstein's collection. Afterwards Patrick and I walked to Starbucks where I got my free birthday coffee (grande peppermint mocha with whip), and Patrick got a grande chestnut praline latte. Walked and rode Muni home. Patrick napped while I took care of financial paperwork and administrative things for home. We watched various YouTube videos. Later we rode rideshare to dinner at Aziza. Cocktails: High Atlas for Patrick, Golden Sands for me. Food: spreads trio with two flatbreads, little gems salad, roasted prawns, chicken roulade, corn bread. Glass of albarino for Patrick, glass of riesling for me. We shared yuzu custard for dessert. Patrick also had an espresso. All food and drink were delicious. The receipt says our server's name was Spark, and we had great service. $238.42 before a $40 tip.

Regular coffee for Patrick, decaf coffee for me. The decaf was French press only, and it arrived, I waited a few minutes, then pressed. When I poured, many grounds were released into the cup, so we asked our waiter to exchange it, and he did so apologetically. The next time it worked as expected. All food and drink were delicious. The food here now feels a bit too rich for me, but I can eat it if I take breaks. About $25 for each entree and $6 for each coffee = $72 after tax and tip and SF surcharge. The receipt said our server's name was Santiago F, who provided good service. Afterwards we walked in the area a bit before visiting with Kerry and Mom Ryan. Next we bought a few items at Golden Produce. We tried to go home at Church Street Station, but the wait for an L train was a disappointing 24 minutes. We left the station and walked in the neighborhood. At Castro Street Station the prediction for the L train was 6 minutes, so we entered the station. On the platform, the prediction change to 11 minutes. We rode a K train to West Portal then alighted. Then the prediction for an L train was 14 minutes. We waited 12 minutes and instead rode bus 48 and walked the rest of the way home. On bus 48 we met a woman on her way to church, but now I can't recall her name. For dinner Patrick and I walked to Golden Boy Pizza which opened recently in the space formerly occupied by Marco Polo Ice Cream. Patrick had a pepperoni slice. I had a pesto veggie slice. There was no place to eat, so we ate on the sidewalk. No drinks. There was a line when we arrived, and they were busy the whole time I was there. There's no other place I know that has a line at night on Taraval. It's really different for our neighborhood. Today I removed two Wiz smart light bulbs which had turned dumb because they stopped working correctly and nothing I tried could make them work properly again. We replaced them with regular light bulbs. I'm not sure smart light bulbs are worth it now. I might never buy them again. We watched Shrinking s2:e8 on Apple TV+ with butter microwave popcorn. Late snack: vegan butter pretzels, toasted marshmallow torani in sparkling water.

Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Began required training: eCourse: UC Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment Prevention for Supervisors, Faculty and MSP. Picked up lunch from Ladle and Leaf: turkey bacon avocado sandwich, chipotle chicken avocado sandwich, quinoa feta avocado salad. Walked and rode Muni home. Lunch with Patrick. Patrick has been continuing to prepare food for Thanksgiving. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Sushi Zen via DoorDash: winter wonderland, miso soup, alaska roll, spider roll, rock 'n' roll. Our order was delivered later than expected, we think because DoorDash had trouble finding a driver. All food was delicious. We listened to John Mulaney: The Top Part on the podcast called Why Are You Laughing? on Apple Podcasts. In preparation for Thanksgiving, we opened our expandable dining table (Crate and Barrel Pranzo II) to insert two of its three leaves. We listened to NPR's Life Kit: Clever Kitchen Hacks with Prue Leith on Apple Podcasts. Patrick washed dishes and went to bed.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; hot water. New home research. Black Friday purchases. Lunch: Patrick had a turkey sandwich with cheddar. I had fusilli with leftover marinara. Cleaned the bathroom, cut my hair, showered, cleaned the bathroom. Later Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to the Castro. Along the way the L-Taraval train stopped before entering the West Portal tunnel for about 15 minutes. There was a delay that was never explained. The train operator did not open the doors to let us out. We were trapped for the entire time. We visited Cliff's Hardware. I bought 9-volt batteries and some packing tape. They didn't have the damper buffer I needed to fix the damaged one in our bathroom cabinet. We walked to The Academy for Friday Wine Social. Afterwards we visited Detour for a round of non-alcoholic drinks and their nori tots which Patrick particularly loves. Rode UberX home along with five bottles of wine from an Academy wine tasting a while back.

For lunch Patrick and I walked to Taqueria Chapala, which newly opened a few months ago. Patrick had enchiladas dinner plate with grilled chicken. I had taco salad with grilled chicken. Complimentary tortilla chips and salsa bar. We each had a small cantaloupe agua fresca, which was actually quite large. All food and drink were delicious. Afterwards we ran an errand then returned home. Patrick set up our Balsam Hill Christmas tree which has lights built into it. It took him about 15 minutes, undecorated. Later: dinner at home with Patrick: Thanksgiving leftovers, Patrick had a normal-sized meal, I had a mini-sized meal. Afterwards we watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed.
