Tue Dec 3, 2024
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Patrick and I both set up our new iPhone 16 Pros. Mine took about 40 minutes. So many screens to walk through! Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Before boarding, I found that Muni passes I had purchased earlier no longer appeared in the app on my new phone. I paid via Clipper card instead. Along the way I encountered and waved to James K. At work I encountered many overlapping problems, many related to the new phone. There was a problem reserving the huddle room I chose, but I resolved that with Alyscia R. Duo authentication wouldn't work, and I had to call the IT Service Desk to resolve it. However, I didn't have a telephone in the huddle room I was in, and cellular reception was spotty. Wifi was also spotty, so I spent several minutes trying different huddle rooms and then simply getting plugged in to ethernet. Eventually I got my Duo problem resolved, but I don't know exactly how. The IT support person removed a phone number from my account, and this created a problem later when I did not receive Duo alerts as expected. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. pcard paperwork. Updated the PharmD website due to the application deadline passing. For today's office winter holiday party, we took over the 3rd floor hotel hub, which is normally a semi-public space for anyone at UCSF to use. James J, Shalimar S, Karen G, Sahru K, Alesia W, and a few others were the main organizers of the event. Everyone on the tower floor was invited, and I personally invited Bernard from floor 4 to crash. I set up the music from my 16-inch MacBook Pro which has surprisingly good speakers. I used Amazon Prime Music, playing Preservation Hall Jazz Band at first before Sharon asked me to switch to a playlist called Relaxing Smooth Jazz which seemed to work. (We intentionally avoided Christmas music because not everyone celebrates it.) Attendees received one raffle ticket for attending, another raffle for dressing festively (which included wearing a provided reindeer or other sparkly or decorative headband), and (I think?) another for entering the baking or ugly sweater contests. One small room held desserts in the baking contest. Another small room held drinks and desserts not entered into the baking contest. The large room held the buffet lines—schwarma wraps, salad, tacos, burritos—and various tables and eating areas. Jen C and Sharon Y (and maybe someone else?) were the contest judges, locking themselves in the room while doing so. Sahru took first place in the baking contest with a fruit tart. Angelie took second place with chocolate pinecones. Karen took third with a dark chocolate bundt cake topped with raspberries. The prizes were Amazon and Target gift cards in varying amounts. There was also an ugly sweater contest, but I must have stepped out for a moment at the time and didn't hear who won. Suzan and Maggie won raffle prizes not part of any contest. Updated the Office of Administration web page and orgchart for Angelie: new hire Wan-Yu L who replaced Judy C. Followup with Jeff N about gathering more data for his new person page. Completed setup for a new form in Drupal to send results to Asana. End of work day. On the Muni T train I encountered Wan-Yu again. We sat together near a dog named Jack (whose name was written on his harness) and a skateboard both of which were owned by a man with his head down while playing (I think) a Nintendo Switch almost the entire time. Jack was on a leash, but the owner was not holding it. Jack was surprisingly quiet and mostly well-behaved for being largely unsupervised. Jack had smelled and was interested in the desserts I was carrying, but the owner looked up for a moment and said a few words and Jack released his interest. Wan-Yu and I chatted about all kinds of things: dogs, cats, pets, volunteering, hamsters, commutes, personal safety, the holiday party, meal planning, journals, memory, recordkeeping, and more. Along the way, the train stopped for a long time—perhaps 10 minutes. Eventually the operator said there was another train stopped in front of us, which wasn't any help. The train eventually started again with an apology. When we alighted at Powell Street Station, Jack and his owner also alighted, and we were surprised and amused to see Jack run far ahead while carrying his short leash in his mouth. Some others walking nearby weren't sure of what to make of a largeish, unleashed dog, but I could tell that Jack would not harm anyone. Dinner at home with Patrick: crab cakes with mac and cheese and peas, hot water. Afterwards we talked about the day's many events. Patrick went to bed. Finished configuring the new iPhone 16 Pro and ensuring that all apps worked as expected. It was a lot of work—several hours. I washed dishes.

Along the way I encountered Lisa D, and we sat together and chatted. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Asana task followup all morning. Filed a vacation request in HBS. Afterwards we walked in the Castro, did a bit of shopping but bought nothing at Cliff's, then visited The Academy for a Christmas tree lighting and game night. Rode UberX home. Late snack: cheddar on toasted sourdough.
Thu Dec 5, 2024

Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work all day. A large earthquake occurred today near Eureka, California. We did not feel it. We received multiple alerts about being in danger of tsunami, but the alert was cancelled after an hour or so. Continued php 8.1 upgrade testing and some small code fixes. Proposed a plan for linking to or promoting the new news submission form. Web edits to remove Brigid R from the website following her departure from UCSF. Continued replacing KMG photos. Edited a news story for Suzan. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover pizza, side salad, hot water. Troubleshot moving purchased MuniMobile tickets from my old phone to my new phone. Even following the instructions does not work. I'll have to call the support phone number when they are open. Patrick washed dishes. Drinks: bourbon and ginger ale for Patrick, ginger ale for me. We watched Skeleton Crew s1:e2 on Disney+ then half of Fortune Feimster: Crushing It on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: one large navel orange. I installed an Incase Slim Case for 2024 iPhone Pro (Clear) onto my iPhone 16 Pro. The product box is incredibly well-designed! I love that one doesn't require a lot of dexterity to open it. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Later snack: two mandarins.
Sat Dec 7, 2024
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Deep-cleaned the dish rack. Tried on new clothes from J. Crew Factory. Lunch: Patrick had oatmeal. I had a Chinese pork sandwich from Millbrae Farmer's Market and cold water. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to Church Street Station then met Brandea at a house showing. She drove us to visit three other homes after that then dropped us at home. Snack: one mandarin. Later we rode UberX to Taisho for dinner and karaoke with some from the Syndicate. Ryan organized. In attendance: Tim, Peter, Tyler, JY, Adrian, Scott, Andy, Patrick, me. JY and Adrian stayed only for dinner. Scott and Andy were about to fly to Hawaii in the morning. I had teriyaki chicken with rice and macaroni salad. Patrick had katsu curry chicken with rice. The very accomplished owner chatted with our group and comped us some sake. There was a mixup over a bottle of sake that Scott and Andy had ordered, but it got resolved. I ate all of my meal except for the mac salad which was a bit too rich for me. Later we moved to the karaoke room downstairs and spent two hours singing with much Sapporo flowing. Patrick and I forgot to bring the musical instruments we own to accompany the singing. Everyone sang at least a little bit, including me, and much fun was had.
Sun Dec 8, 2024
Skipped breakfast. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to Church Street Station. At West Portal Station the train again waited a long time before entering the tunnel. I timed it this time—6 minutes. We attempted to brunch at Wooden Spoon, but it was very crowded as expected, and we didn't want to wait. Instead we walked to Santeria which was empty except for one large table which turned out to be a surprise birthday party for someone. Patrick had cafe de olla (coffee with mexican spices) and chorizo omelette. I had huevos rancheros, no add meat. $44 before a 15% tip for Glenda C whose service was good. All food and drink were delicious. While dining we realized that the Santa Skivvies Run took place this morning, as participants gathered for brunch afterwards. Afterwards Patrick and I visited Cliff's to return some batteries that we didn't want. Then we visited with Kerry and Mom Ryan about an hour before sharing a holiday spice latte from Peet's. At Peet's I encountered and briefly said hello to Andrew aka andiroo1. Patrick and I walked to an open house on States Street, meeting Brandea there. Afterwards we walked in the area stopping briefly at Swirl before riding Muni to West Portal Station. We shopped at Shaw's for small gifts and refreshment. Patrick got a scoop of chocolate caramel crisp ice cream, and I got a ginger ale because my stomach was a little uneasy from something. We returned to West Portal Station then rode Muni and walked home. Along the way we sighted Kiri the Japanese Firetruck twice—fun! Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: together we prepared whole wheat spaghetti with Rao's marinara from a jar. Patrick washed dishes. I did more new home research while Patrick did more travel planning for a forthcoming trip. We finished watching Fortune Feimster: Crushing It on Netflix. Patrick went to bed.
Mon Dec 9, 2024

Followup with Kelly K about starting a new email newsletter for CCB. Followup with IT. Accepted a package for Jen C from a woman delivering for Amazon. A few minutes later she returned trying to find a room in HSE. I walked her there. It took about 15 minutes. Even I didn't know what I was doing. A few minutes after I walked her to the building exit a different woman entered asking, "Where is Ladle and Leaf?" I again gave directions but this time did not walk her all the way there. I went to get lunch. Bernard decided to join but not eat. Along the way outside Kalmanovitz Library Bernard purchased snickerdoodles from a bake sale benefitting children in Gaza. At You See Sushi I learned they are closed on Monday. I tried to eat at Yellow Submarine, but that too was closed. I got to go a crunchy chicken ranch pita with fries from Foghorn Taproom. We walked to Golden Gate Park across the baseball field. Bernard napped while I ate. The food was delicious. I couldn't finish it. I would do better next time to get just the pita and not the fries. Lemon La Croix sparkling water to drink. At the park two people were flying remote-controlled airplanes. The day was warmer than usual. We walked back to work. Team meeting with Katherine and Suzan. Edited a news story for Katherine. Responded to ACDRS website questions from Jaime K. Followup with IT. Wed Dec 11, 2024
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted grated coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Chatted with Suzan while her computer was installing a macOS update. Prepped for tomorrow's town hall. A strange Zoom account problem caused me to think that our recurring webinar had been deleted, but in reality it had not. Still hadn't heard from a San Francisco government agency about a problem I reported, and this caused me to identify that they were not able to reach me via the private relay apple id email address I used for my account with them so I sent them another message using a different email address. 1:1 with Katherine. Processed alumni data provided by UDAR. Lunch: leftover pizza. Suzan ate with me in my office, and I introduced her to SNL Liza Minnelli Tries to Turn Off a Lamp and The Californians and two tracks from Sandra Bernhard's Without You I'm Nothing. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. pcard paperwork. Walked and rode Muni home. An elderly driver almost ran me over even though I was in a crosswalk and wearing my headlamp which was on its high setting. Instead of waiting 16 minutes for a next 66 bus I took an alternate route (N to 28 or 28R) but this took longer than if I had waited for that bus. The commute is almost always the worst part of my day. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick had leftover pizza, leftover focaccia with marinara. I had leftover cashew chicken with leftover steamed rice. Cocktails: Patrick had Bailey's with whiskey on the rocks. I had Bailey's with clear creme de menthe, vodka, and milk on the rocks. Thu Dec 12, 2024
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted grated coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. It took 53 minutes to travel 1.83 miles. The daymare started when I got to my regular bus 66 stop and noticed on my phone that the bus was not on schedule. The map said it was behind me, so I turned around, and it was parked a block away. It never parks there. The driver was on the sidewalk taking a break, so I knew the bus was broken, which is very unusual on this line. I waited 11 minutes for a 48 bus to take me 7 blocks to 19th Avenue. As the bus let me out, I saw a 28 bus stop past the bus stop because a garbage truck was parked in the bus zone while a worker removed lots of abandoned trash next to a trash can. Since the bus stopped on the wrong side of the intersection, it purposely waited for all the people waiting at the bus stop to cross the street so that they could board. But because the operator crossed the intersection just as the light turned yellow, I now needed to cross twice if I were to try to catch it, and so now it was impossible. After a minute, the bus took off. I waited more time for the next bus, a 28R. I rode to 19th and Judah then waited for an N train and rode that to Irving and Arguello. Finally at work. Reported trash abandoned at the Muni stop shelter and at the elevator lobby inside the building. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Helped Aggie troubleshoot a problem with Gmail messages disappearing. I was unable to resolve it for her, and I think all her messages are permanently gone. Asana task cleanup. Spent most of the day on the new year message build. Late lunch to go from Panda Express: Panda Bowl with fried rice with mushroom chicken. Water from my water bottle. Began listening to a podcast episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson interviewing Sandra Bernhard. The Panda Bowl container is now paper instead of plastic. The portion size seems smaller than before. Edited a short news story for Katherine. In the afternoon I attended the town hall and managed the Zoom recording. I started the webinar over an hour beforehand because the time had changed from 2 to 3. Not everyone received the updated calendar invitation, and we don't know why or how. Asset generation using Components AI. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: smoked trout and avocado salad toasts, hot water. Patrick had a glass of red wine. Dessert: we shared my fortune cookie from lunch. My fortune: True love is worth waiting for. I washed dishes. Afterwards I had Bailey's on ice with a chocolate fig. We watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I stayed up for a few hours more then went to bed. Late snack: peanut butter on toasted slices of pain de levain, water.
Fri Dec 13, 2024
Skipped breakfast at home because today is staff appreciation breakfast at work. At the bus stop today a weird thing happened. About when my bus was supposed to arrive a 67 bus arrived. I thought, "That's really weird," since that bus doesn't run on this street, so I shook my head and indicated that I didn't want it. I'm not sure if the driver even saw me, even though I was wearing my headlamp which was lit on the highest setting. But a moment later, I realized that that was my usual 66 bus but the sign was set incorrectly—off by one. How dumb I had been to not realize it sooner, but it really only arrived and passed within a few seconds. Down the street I saw it stopped two blocks away, so I ran for it. I accidentally dropped my new iPhone 16 Pro, went back a few steps, retrieved it, continued running with my wheeled bag behind me, and caught up to the bus. The driver still didn't see me, and it took a few screams—Stop! Stop!—for him to stop and let me on. Onboard he confirmed that he was having trouble with the sign ("…still trying to figure it out…") and I explained that I didn't know his was the correct bus. I'm not sure if he knew I ran two blocks, but I was out of breath and just needed to sit and catch it. When I alighted, he apologized, and I did not make a big deal of it. I continued on to work and the rest of the trip was uneventful. I dropped my stuff off in the office then visited the staff appreciation breakfast. Still in the first half of the seventh hour of the day, it wasn't too crowded. Scrambled eggs, one medium-sized pork sausage link, deep-fried potatoes, mandarin, and a very cute holiday cookie (mine was a snowperson). Coffee to drink. I did not see orange juice or tea, but I presume there was tea somewhere. The portion sizes are not generous, and there seemed to be fewer choices than previous years, but the sincerity of the servers and staff running the event seemed genuine. Part of the dining room was open, but since I was alone I just took the food back to my desk. The food was lukewarm, and wasn't easily reheatable, but it didn't matter because it's all eaten within a few minutes anyway. Made live a new block on all news pages to encourage faculty and staff to submit news items via the new news and social media submission form. Edited the transcript of yesterday's town hall. Previously we used Otter to do this, but now Zoom has auto-transcribe and transcript editing features that seem new to me. Quick lunch from Panda Express: three crab rangoons with sauce. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Mount Zion. Transcribed all day. Medical appointment. UCSF shuttle from Mount Zion to Parnassus. Katherine and I met with Marc V and Alisha R from UCSF Office of Communications. Finished transcribing and posted the video to YouTube. Team meeting with Katherine and Suzan. We watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Shopped online at Weee! which is recently new to us. It's "America's largest online Asian supermarket."
