Breakfast at home with Patrick: blueberry pancakes, 8 ounces of orange juice, and for me, a pint of hot water. Updated the emergency health info sheet that I always carry with me. Installed updates for iOS and other software and devices. Resolved a problem in which Patrick's computer was failing to back up across the network due to a problem with permissions on the backup drive. Getting info on the volume, unlocking the sharing section, then setting my account's permissions to read and write fixed it. Continued updates and related remediation for home websites: Grav and PHP. Resolved a problem in which PHP was downloading the script instead of executing it by removing an AddHandler directive in my .htaccess file. Late lunch: Fritos corn chips, tortiglioni with leftover marinara and meatball, hot water. Cut my hair, showered. Finished watching Aquaman on Netflix DVD with Patrick. This film was cringeworthy and disappointing for its mostly cheesy dialogue and overly dramatic music particularly before we had much invested in the hero at all. Several major plot points were easily predictable, there was a seeming indifference and lack of conviction and intelligence of the hero, and the people of Atlantis were surprisingly fickle. These all were points of pain or amusement. The IMDB rating is currently 7.1, and this is much too high. Recharge Medical work: added two videos to the CoolSculpting page, prepped a change to explain late hours and sent it to Alyssa for review.

Drinks and a game at Laureate at the Laurel Inn with Eric, James, Grant, and Levi to celebrate our successful publication of the latest Update from the Dean. The Laureate bar was remodeled in August 2018, and it's quite swank. Levi and I were surprised that they used flame tea lights instead of electric. The game Eric brought was similar to Cards Against Humanity except with tiny cards and very scarily specific to educational institutions and web projects. Levi got some olives as an appetizer and shared but mostly ate all of them himself. We talked about old School of Pharmacy yearbooks, volcanoes, Charles Bradley, trees, Portland, Seattle, NIMBYism, politics, commutes, Game of Thrones, Electric Daisy Carnival, Las Vegas, Aladdin, and more. James won the first round, and Levi won the second round. A fun time. Walked and rode Muni home. Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself yogurt with diced banana, diced nectarine, unsweetened cocoa, and sliced almonds; one pint of hot water. Patrick picked up a GetAround car then napped. Cut my hair, showered. We drove to Redwood City. Lunch at Five Guys (650-364-3101, 801 Middlefield Road, Redwood City): bacon-bbq burger for Patrick, cheeseburger all the way for me, large cajun fries to share. We liked our burgers, but they were too big. We should order the smaller burgers next time. Also, the cajun fries were too salty for Patrick and too spicy for me. We should order a small order of regular fries next time. To drink we shared a bottled water and a chocolate shake with whipped cream. $33.49. Next we met Chris and Andy at their place for a hike through Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Patrick brought a book to share, and we brought a bottle of wine and a bottle of Champagne to share. We drove two cars to the Highway 35 north parking lot, dropped one car off, then all four of us drove to the south parking lot. We hiked from the south lot to the north lot—we guessed it was around 6.5 miles. Chris identified plant life throughout the hike, which was almost entirely shaded by redwoods, oaks, and other trees. We saw ants, butterflies (or maybe moths), banana slugs, and various birds, but very little other wildlife. In the second half of our hike Chris discovered a full bag of trash that persons unknown to us had left behind. He carried it all the way out. We all drove to the south lot to pick up the other car, then returned to their place. They prepared drinks; an appetizer of baked goat cheese and nectarines with baguette slices; and a dinner of steamed green beans; quartered, roasted potatoes; and grilled salmon with a guajillo chile sauce. Rumble kept us company throughout, and occasionally we caught glimpses of Gimlet in the back yard. After dinner we soaked in the hot tub for a while then returned inside for almond-orange-blossom ice cream with a pirouette. Patrick and I returned home late. A fine day.
Sun May 26, 2019
Slept in. Rode UberX to the Castro. Met quantum13 and Tadija at Bearbucks. We walked to Mama Ji's for dim sum brunch: combo chow mein, turnip cake, shrimp roll, shanghai dumplings, sticky rice, and more dumplings. Afterwards we walked to The Castro Fountain but then changed our destination because Tadija said he wanted soft-serve instead of regular ice cream. We walked to Super Duper and he got a chocolate-vanilla swirl cone. We stopped at Giddy where Tadija bought a bag of mixed sour candy chews. They went to Greg and Antonio's to rest. I ran a few errands: Mollie Stone's and Walgreens. Rode Uber Pool home. Prepared a ginger broth for Patrick. Washed mud off Patrick's shoes. Repaired a USB to mini-USB cable with some Elmer's glue. Late small meal: leftover angel hair pasta with shrimp and bacon, water. Today we had planned to attend a party at Phillip and Eric's but our plans had regrettably changed due to events beyond our control.
Mon May 27, 2019
Breakfast: one small nectarine. Lunch at home with Patrick: supreme thin-crust pizza from frozen, hot water. Nap. Rode Muni downtown with Patrick for couples counseling, stopping at Peet's to share a caramel macchiato. Rode UberX to the Castro. Dinner at a new restaurant called Blind Butcher which is by the same owner of Lark next door. Patrick had an Almanac kolsch, I had a JP Chenet sparkling rose. We shared: proscuitto burrata, buttermilk crispy chicken with creamy mushroom, and truffle lobster mac and cheese. Dessert: chocolate salted caramel lava cake. The burrata and lobster mac and cheese were perfect. We both agreed that the chicken was crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. However, Patrick found parts that were fatty and inedible that he wished had been trimmed away before cooking. I didn't find the same thing and thought the chicken was delicious. We both were disappointed by the lava cake, which had no flowing lava and was actually cold in parts. We didn't complain about anything, though. Service by multiple staff members was friendly and attentive. $99.72 after a $14 tip. Overall, a mixed result. Rode UberX home.

Watched Wanda Sykes: Not Normal on Netflix instant watch with Patrick and French 75 cocktails and Skinny Pop popcorn. Hilarious!
Wed May 29, 2019

Also served: a spicy curry-carrot soup, two kinds of meat lasagne, garlic noodles, corn off the cob with peas and cherry tomatoes, twice-baked potatoes with cheddar. Dessert: Steven also brought a delicious, not-too-sweet chocolate cake from Casa de Chocolates. Rode UberX home.
Thu May 30, 2019
Breakfast at home with Patrick: Patrick boiled and baked the bagels he began preparing two days ago, and we ate them with cream cheese. He made two kinds: one topped with coarse salt, and another topped with light and dark sesame seeds. They were delicious with the correct flavor, size, height, texture, and chewiness. I thought they were perfect. To drink: 8 ounces of orange juice. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Continued converting old documents from PDF to HTML. In response to Chrome's announcement of proposing to limit adblocking, I have begun using uBlock Origin to disable Javascript by default for all sites and to manually whitelist it per site as needed. I recall having tried something like this in the past but failed to stick with it, but it's worth another try. How to do it: (a) right-click the uBlock Origin shield icon, select Options, then Settings. The dashboard appears. (b) in the Default Behavior section, select the checkbox for Disable Javascript. To toggle whitelisting or blacklisting Javascript for the current site: (a) click the uBlock Origin shield icon, (b) in the lower right corner select the </> icon, (c) reload the page. These changes will last until your browser restarts. To make the change persist between browser restarts, select the lock icon in the top left corner of the uBlock Origin popup menu. This is basically how I have been handling home and work email for several years now: spam filters are set very stringently and legitimate mail is whitelisted by hand. Breakfast at home with Patrick: double-sesame bagel sandwiches with egg, cheddar, sage-rubbed bacon, heirloom tomato; 8 ounces of orange juice. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights.
