June 2018

Summary: Bob the Drag Queen at Oasis

Dates on this page

Fri Jun 1, 2018

Breakfast at home: a pear. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. One of those days when Muni takes about an hour to travel five miles. Styling work: homepage improvements, beginning to look at laundry line images problems. Asana task followup. Microsites work: granting access to a new Wang Lab editor. Gathered and shared photos for Lisa K for Susie. Lunch at Eliza's with Patrick: soup for both, beef with black bean sauce for Patrick, chow fun for me: $24.35 after a $3 tip. Patrick's fortune: An unexpected friend will bring you fortune. My fortune: You will do well to expand your horizons. Finished reading Richard Rutter's Web Typography, which I highly recommend. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs lentils and english peas with eggs; Hint strawberry kiwi, red wine. Recharge Medical work: editing in Google Docs and form building in InDesign CC. Chatted with Adolfo via SMS.

Sat Jun 2, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: pancakes with nutmeg-topped applesauce, chocolate mint tea. Nap. House party at 15th Avenue House. Lots of people. Some names I recall: Courtney, Harvey, Anh, Yu, Greta, Kevin, Jonathan, Jesse, Phil, Danny, Romy, Drew, Nate, Theora, Chris G, Paul, Wayne, Richard, Michael, Lisa, Brianna, Itzel, Jose, Chris, Jonny, Johnny, Alyssa, Tim, Cricket, Sean. The clinic gang played Uno and maybe Cards Against Humanity. Afterwards I met A at The Mix where we chatted for a while, meeting someone from Guatemala. After that we went to Toad Hall to dance, which was fun. I realized that the video set hasn't changed in a long time because the choices/order of the songs was exactly the same as on a previous visit. Why is there a DJ in the booth if it's not mixed live? Met Clay and Xavier. Rode UberX home.

Sun Jun 3, 2018

Slept in. Brunch at 15th Avenue House: eggs, boudin, bread. We visited the de Young Museum primarily to see Weapons of Mass Seduction: The Art of Propaganda. Snack: chocolate mint chip ice cream sandwiches and dessert wine that Patrick and I had bought in Ashland. Rode Uber Pool home. Patrick and I completed our mail-in ballots for Tuesday's primary election. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs pasta e fagioli (pasta and bean ragu), Hint raspberry.

Mon Jun 4, 2018

Breakfast at home: yogurt with blueberries and chopped almonds, half of an almond croissant. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Styling work. Sprint standup. Microsites work: NMR, Craik, and CPT followup. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Lunch at Presidio Pizza Company: artichoke hearts pizza slice, side kale caesar salad, ice water. I hadn't been here in a long time and really enjoyed the light, thin crust which had a tasty tomato sauce. Stopped at the gift shop at Mt. Zion where a woman said I could have an eyeglass case for free even though I intended to pay for it. "We have extras." So nice! UCSF shuttle from Mt. Zion to Laurel Heights. Styling work: image credit minor adjustments. Rode Uber Pool to Bar Agricole. Met Patrick for dinner. This dinner at Bar Agricole was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in a long time. We arrived 10 minutes early for our reservation. There were six or so people at the bar and the restaurant was almost entirely empty. We were asked to wait at the bar before being seated at a table. We waited a really long time before the sole bartender greeted us. We waited a really long time and watched him make many drink orders before he took our order: two glasses of the wine special for $5 each. Meanwhile we had been watching as people who entered after us were being seated at dining tables. It was hard getting the attention of any host since the one that greeted us initially had disappeared. Several minutes later—and 12 minutes past our reservation time—we were finally seated. On our way to the table I told Patrick, "Watch—they'll charge us the non-happy-hour price for the wines when it appears on our bill." We shared a $20 hamburger (medium) and a chef's selection of four charcuterie items for $29. Bread and butter was an extra $5. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. The burger was prepared as ordered, was lukewarm, and had no lettuce, no tomato, no pickle, and was accompanied by pickled vegetables—none of which was a pickle. It tasted fine except for the low temperature. This entree is in no way worth $20 even in San Francisco. The charcuterie items tasted fine but seemed extraordinarily expensive for what you get. Are four two-millimeter-thick slices of salami worth $7? For dessert we had molasses cookies ($6) and two scoops of housemade strawberry swirl ice cream with olive oil and salt ($8). Both desserts were tasty but nothing special. I laughed repeatedly at one of the dessert items on the menu—a bowl of cherries and Triple Delight blueberries with whipped cream—because I can make that myself at home in about five minutes. A long wait for Jennifer for the check; she had disappeared for a long time. Eventually someone who was not our waitron delivered our check, and I noticed that the two glasses of wine were missing from the bill. Another long wait to get someone's attention so that I could point that out. They took the check away. I went to the restroom. When they returned they had told Patrick that they took one of the glasses off the bill because we were honest. But they charged us $6, which wasn't quite one glass off. The original price of the glass of wine was $12. The happy hour price for the same glass was $5. We couldn't figure out how what they said made sense with what we saw on the bill. At this point I said to Patrick, "Nothing makes sense in this restaurant!" and I paid and we were quite relieved to leave. We walked across the street to Oasis where we had VIP tickets to see Bob the Drag Queen. Upon entry Patrick asked about the reserved seating for VIP ticketholders and was told "We aren't doing that tonight." He pulled out his phone and found evidence of them advertising that VIP ticketholders would have reserved seating and showed it to the ticket taker. Again she said, "We aren't doing that tonight." It was at this point that Patrick decided he will never return to Oasis following our previous bad experience on May 31, 2018. For our last show at Oasis, Bob the Drag Queen told jokes and funny stories and lipsynched to tunes picked by the audience. Rode UberX home. Troubleshot and resolved internet problems using Anakin's pod racer solution.

Tue Jun 5, 2018

Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Task followup. 1:1 with Eric. Resolved or staged markup and styling issues for QBC sites for Rebecca B. Updated html email templates with a fix for the "Add us to your address book" link problem in outlook.office.com. Submitted a Siteimprove request to Jill W. Styling work: various fixes. Calendar management. For lunch I walked to Pixnix and found it closed for the next 6 weeks due to refurbishment construction. I instead ate at Kaiju Eats: K.O. ramen, ice water. Very tasty and not spicy like I wanted. Styling work: table and other improvements. Errand: grocery. Rode Uber Pool home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs fattoush salad with cherries and mint (instead of tomatoes), Hint watermelon. We suspect that the cracker in this recipe didn't turn out exactly right—maybe not crispy enough?—but otherwise was fine enough. Waxed the dining table. Late snack: tortilla chips and guacamole, Hint mango grapefruit.

Thu Jun 7, 2018

Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs chicken salad and mozzarella sandwiches. Nap. Rode UberX to SoMa for drinks and dancing at Boy Division at Cat Club. It was my first time to this event, and I think my first time to Cat Club as well. Boy Division calls itself SF's queer wave dance party: new wave, electropop, dirty disco, indie. I spent most of my time in the back room while DJ Xander spun—all great choices. The sound systems are excellent. Rode UberX to the Castro. Danced for a while at Toad Hall. Rode UberX home.

Sat Jun 9, 2018

Slept in, skipping breakfast and lunch. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Taraval Pizza via delivery.com: italian sausage, garlic, and mushroom on a 14-inch pie, vegetarian salad with blue cheese dressing. Today I decided to stop using Grubhub and Eat24 because they both automatically default to setting a tip. In fact, I could not see a way to complete my order without setting at least a tip of $0.01. Since delivery has been hit or miss for us in the past with many (half?) of our deliveries being disasters—usually meaning very late and cold—we now prefer to tip only in cash in accordance with whether the delivery was on time. It's not fair for food delivery services to ask for a tip up front and then have a delivery be 30 or more minutes late or an item was forgotten in the bag or a pizza topping was missing or some other problem. This is not rocket science. We don't want to set a tip of $0.01 because we don't know what kind of message that sends to the restaurant completing the order. All this is enough to make you want to go back to dealing with phone orders and all the problems that accompany that—poor signal because their connection is a wireless one, poor English speakers / communicators / enunciators / handwriters / typers, etc. I also learned today that about 10 months ago Grubhub bought Eat24 from Yelp. That's probably why both checkout processes have the same problem now. Watched all of John Wick 2 on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Repaired a light fixture that had broken in our kitchen area. Late meal: one slice of leftover pizza, Hint watermelon. Patrick made his beans recipe today.

Walked home. Patrick had been having a problem launching MixMeister Studio 7.3.1 in OS 10.13.5 High Sierra after not having used it for a long time. He doesn't have a copy of his receipt, and he doesn't have the same email account he used when he bought it, so it's unlikely we'll get any help from the vendor. I first tried a clean reinstall but that didn't fix it. I eventually repaired it by getting info on the application and selecting the checkbox for "open in low resolution." Sat Jun 23, 2018

Slept in. Breakfast tacos from leftovers. Patrick and I rode Muni to West Portal where we were forced to alight and transfer to a bus. Hundreds of others were already waiting as a packed double bus was about to leave. I had jokingly suggested to Patrick earlier in the day that we would be forced to alight; I know Muni too well, I guess. Just goes to show you that sometimes Muni is not the best way to travel to Pride Saturday. We walked down the block to get away from the zoo of angry passengers then ordered UberX for $20 before tip for a ride to the festival. We set our destination not too close so that the Uber driver wouldn't get stuck in traffic too much and walked a few blocks to enter the festival. This year there were two lines: bag and no bag. There seemed to be no specific designations regarding bags under 18 by 18 inches as there was in previous years. We donated $5 each and received stickers letting us get $1 off beverages at beverage stations. We got food at the place with the shortest line: a soul food food truck. Patrick had what they called a jambalaya but which he said was more of a shrimp creole. I had pulled pork with mac and cheese. The portions were generous for fair food; Patrick couldn't finish his, and I ate all mine, later feeling like I had eaten too much. Then we got drinks at a drink booth. We had looked at the drink menu and made our decisions and then when we approached the counter we were immediately told that there was only one kind of cocktail left: cranberry vodka, which was not the drink either of us had wanted. We got cranberry vodkas. We visited or got close to all three of today's stages and spent most of our time at the main stage hosted by Persia and Yves St. Croissant and where we saw sets by Ms. Nzuri Soul (very good but a bit off-key at times) and Femme Deadly Venoms (excellent). This is the first time I can recall seeing advertisements on the video screens. The first one I saw was for, of course, a pharmacy. A woman from France spoke for about a minute about something. The set by The Stud with a special DJ set by Siobhan Aluvalot had finished one number—Rock Lobster (terrific)—and the power went out seemingly on the entire stage. All three of the big-screen displays were dark, microphones weren't working. A man working what seemed to be the sound board looked like he was searching for the problem and couldn't find it. Persia and Yves St. Croissant tried to hold it together for as long as they could, but we lost interest after a while and wandered off. We walked from Civic Center to the Castro and dined at Fable: san pell for Patrick, tap water for me. We shared a little gems salad with beets and green goddess dressing. Patrick had the roast chicken with black rice and grilled asparagus. I had halibut with butter beans. No dessert. $82.31 before a $16 tip.

Sun Jun 24, 2018

Slept in. Pre-breakfast by myself in the sun in the back yard: leftovers. Breakfast with Patrick just after our Good Eggs delivery arrived: leftovers. Rode UberX with Patrick to 17th and Mission. Walked to dinner at El Techo de Lolinda. A short wait at around 4:30 pm—maybe 10 minutes. Margaritas el Techo, chips and salsa, three skewers (chicken, shrimp, and chorizo), quesadilla de pibil (pork with oaxaca cheese): $96.75 before a $17 tip. Alamo Drafthouse New Mission and Incredibles 2 in 2D with water, triple chocolate shake, vieux carre for Patrick, and popcorn: $29.68 before a $6 tip. Rode UberX home.

We walked to the Castro and outside of the pet supply store we encountered JY who introduced us to his friend Ian. We stopped briefly to say hello. Patrick and I dined at Hamburger Mary's: mary size peach margarita for Patrick, mary size total top margarita for me. We shared chicken and waffles and barbara-q bacon burger with kobe beef medium. Water for both. $68.24 before a $14 tip. Service by Eric L was excellent. The drag queen hostess was welcoming when we arrived and sort of performed one number while introducing the staff but was briefly interrupted by new arrivals. It's hard to come here and not get a smile put on your face.

Levi rode his bike. We met at Sessions at the Presidio for Paula's team farewell, snacking on kennebec fries (fried in what we were told was rice oil which I had never heard of) and charcuterie platters with our beverages. Afterwards we took a group photo by the nearby manmade lake with the help of a stranger. Our gifts to Paula: a framed word cloud of words that the group thought of when thinking of Paula, and a pair of Slack coasters. The group signed the back of the framed word cloud while we ate and drank. She loved the gifts. Her last day is Thursday. I rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs eggplant sandwiches with mozzarella, salsa verde, and arugula except he subbed turkey patties for the eggplant because I have an aversion to the purple vegetable. Hint watermelon to drink. Later I looked up rice oil in Wikipedia and was redirected to rice bran oil.
