Small web edit for Mary Anne, Melanie F, and Sally M: integrity of research. Edited the wireless page—this took a lot of writing of new content. Dinner at home: stir-fry similar to the one I made recently except this one has yakisoba noodles. Organized books at home.

Sat Jul 3, 2010

Yoga: standing warmup practice, beginner 1 practice. Hot partially organic lemonade with simple syrup. Brunch at Drew, Phil, and Romey's. Sat in Dolores Park watching SF Mime Troupe's season opener. Stopped at Gracias Madres (415-683-1346, 2211 Mission Street) for a quesadilla to go. I ate it while walking to my car—it was a little awkward but I did it. And it was so delicious! Home. Homemade country-style watermelon cooler. Dinner with Phil, Drew, Romy, Einstein at Absinthe Brasserie and Bar. Realized I forgot to bring my wallet. Home. Thought about going out but decided against it.

Sun Jul 4, 2010

Half order of oatmeal with half a peach from a jar, nonfat milk. Almost started making banana bread but stopped—not enough time. Amputagged a lot of clothes. Brunch at Chris and Nate's with Jen, Chris, Nate, Phil, Drew, Romey: maple brown sugar sausages (which I did not eat) and blueberry pancakes, some of which were in the shape of Yoda and a stormtrooper. The pancake molds were from Williams-Sonoma and seemed troublesome to use, especially for making pancakes for a large group. Home. Watermelon cooler from the blender: ice, fresh seedless watermelon, fresh mint, simple syrup. Laundry. Midafternoon meal: leftovers. Baked Caribbean banana bread. Met two of the new upstairs neighbors: Ashton and Travis. Folded laundry. Tweaked alterations to shirts. Jogging in place: 10 minutes. Brief nap. Impromptu potluck with Tony A, Peter P, Mark T, Roger Mao, Khoi, Shane, Jon Marco Ibe, and Alex W. Tue Jul 6, 2010

Breakfast: organic vanilla nonfat yogurt with fresh diced yellow peach, peach slices, 12 ounces of generic V8. To work. Chatted briefly with Cindy about non-academic messages going to the listservs. SCWG meeting. Mark B says he thinks it is not likely we will outsource our email because the numbers don't show that it's cheaper and because we still have new filtering tools that won't work if email is outsourced. He also said (essentially) that full OWA is coming for users of all modern browsers. Management activities. Announced new student profiles. Chatted briefly with Leslie F on the way to lunch. Lunch by myself at You See Sushi: tempura with california roll lunch special. Completed the rewrite and review of my wireless page, sent it to SCWG for review. More SCWG work and cdrom building. Wed Jul 7, 2010

Stretches. Weight training: superslow dumbbell fly, superslow dumbbell press. Shower. Handled account closure cleanup for Scott E. (Joel and I thought we were done, but no.) cdrom building all day. More tiny.ucsf.edu feedback for Brad D. Snack: pretzels. Lunch: shrimp and avocado roll and cold noodle salad from the cafeteria. The cold noodle salad add-on wasn't worth $3 but I kind of knew that going in. The roll was good but too spicy for me. (I ate it anyway.) 1-on-1 with Rodney. Set Darius up with MySQL access. Lots of calendar management: master planning with Susie. To home. Chatted with the upstairs neighbors. Snack: nonfat cottage cheese, fresh pineapple chunks, maraschino cherries. TechTool Deluxe surface scan reveals 7 errors. Chris tells me Apple drives don't let you mark sectors as bad so I might need a new hard drive under warranty if reformat and restore and retest does not fix it. Unrelatedly, I recently resolved the error "connection failed - there was an error connecting to the server ... check the server name ..." by recreating the folder alias I had in ~/Library/PDF Services. Watched "My First Adventure" of The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Vol. 1 (1992) on Netflix DVD. Discovered Davey Wavey, thanks to Marck G. DW reminds me most of Ferris Bueller for some strange reason. Chatted with Lani late regarding Amtrak reservations.

Posted new homepage announcements for Susie. Uploaded 2 images to The Archive. Sent the software cd to SCWG for review. Turns out we need to do DVD instead of CD this year—too big. Handled an ID card access for Lynn H and FM custodial. Snack: cherries. Lunch: leftover stir fry at desk. Snack: assorted flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt from the cafeteria. Dinner at home: leftover pizza and stir fry, homemade Smith and Wesson—delicious! Linkchecking for home websites. Recharge Spa work. Late meal: leftover stir fry, Panda Express fortune cookie. My fortune: You have a flair for adding a fanciful dimension to any story. Upstairs neighbors had their first big party since moving in. They're noisier than previous neighbors, but it's not too irritating yet.

Sat Jul 10, 2010

Breakfast at home: oatmeal with fresh diced granny smith apple, organic cinnamon, organic nonfat milk. Brunch at Phil, Drew, and Romey's with Phil, Drew, Romey, Quyen, Sandip, Nate, Chris: blueberry french toast, fruit salad, yogurt, fresh fruit. I brought cocoa pebbles treats. Chris and Nate left while I napped. Phil left for work. After I woke, the rest of us went to Nubi at Potrero Center for frozen yogurt then stopped briefly at Radio Shack and Ross buying nothing. Instant chow mein noodles. Speccio. We watched Brazil on Netflix DVD followed by Scream on TV. Home. iMac surgery with DiskWarrior 4. Late meal: organic ramen noodles with organic egg, cabbage, parsley. Removed a silverfish.

Sun Jul 11, 2010

Breakfast at home: oatmeal with fresh diced granny smith apple, organic cinnamon, organic nonfat milk; 16 ounces of generic V8. Packed for Utopia. Went to Utopia. Orzo and shrimp salad at the party: $6 for perhaps 3 ounces? (I should have planned something else). I also ate cherries and pretzels that I had brought with me. Patio Filipino with Ryan, Jason, and JY. I think this was my first time eating in a restaurant that was all Filipino food. Everyone at the table was more familiar with Filipino cuisine than me. Decided to not eat vegetarian at this meal—it was too difficult with the menu, not a problem. My favorite dish: pancit something noodles. Late meal: leftovers from Patio Filipino. iMac surgery appears to be successful!

Sat Jul 17, 2010

Breakfast at home: hot lemonade with simple syrup, 2 slices of wheat toast with butter, 1 organic banana, 16 ounces of generic V8. Lots of computer problems. The iMac is really slow, and I often see the gay beach ball of death. I spent hours trying to figure out the problem, did laundry along the way. Lunch at home: quinoa spaghetti with sweet basil marinara sauce. More computer troubleshooting. Nap. Gas and air for the car. Birthday party at Remi's with Remi, Jesse, Nikki, John, Brian L, Brian, Brian, Jim, Jean-Marie, Greg, Chris, Andy, Drew. After barbecued animal and veggie burgers and assorted sides, Remi tested our knowledge of film scores, one-hit-wonder pop songs, and other trivia, and we also played a haunted house simulation on the Wii.

Sun Jul 18, 2010

Breakfast at home: hot lemonade with simple syrup, 2 slices of wheat toast with butter, 1 organic banana. House chores: ironing, vacuuming. More computer troubleshooting. OS X seems to be working, but I'm not sure what of the thousand things I did fixed it. Currently uninstalling Sophos seems to have been the fix, but I'm not certain of that. Since OS X hung while my Win 7 VM was active, the next time I started Win 7 it tried to do a Startup Repair. After it took longer than I thought it would, I tried to cancel the Startup Repair operation, and then it told me that the operation was not cancelable. (Then, why did you offer me a Cancel button?) I shut down the VM and restored from a manual VM backup which took about 45 minutes. Yoga: standing warmup practice, beginner 2 practice. Lunch at home: pan-fried gyoza, hot water. Web work for Kristin and Drew. More VMware Fusion troubleshooting. Cut my hair, showered. Ric's fundraiser at the Lookout. Burgers Super Duper with Ric, Larry, Eric, Matt W. Ric had a vanilla shake that had an ovoid lump of unknown substance at the bottom—a woman working there said it was brown sugar—whew! This was my first time eating cow since (I think) Patio Filipino—stomach felt a little uneasy, but I'm not certain that cow was the cause. Leche at Trigger with Emery, Ric, Larry, Eric, Matt W, Eugene, and Hao.

Mon Jul 19, 2010

I had planned a vacation day for today but turned out being sick: sore throat, some chest congestion. Breakfast at home: hot lemonade with brown sugar, 2 slices of wheat toast with butter, 1 organic banana. Ran a few errands. Lunch: mushroom slice at Taraval Pizzeria. Jogged in place for 30 minutes while watching Eddie Izzard's Circle on Netflix instant watch. Grocery shopping at Trader Joe's Stonestown. Snack: corn on the cob with butter. Dinner at home: stir fry with organic tofu, snow peas, baby spinach, green onions, garlic, ginger, mushrooms, organic soy sauce.

Tue Jul 20, 2010

Home with a sore throat. 2 slices of wheat toast with butter, 1 apricot. Lunch: 2 corn on the cobs with butter. Jogged in place for 30 minutes while watching Gods of Football: The Making of the Calendar on Netflix instant watch. Snack: Rainier cherries. All my Bluehost websites and mail went down today. I contacted Bluehost support on live chat and here's what they said: "I apologize, but it looks like our administrators are currently performing some unexpected maintenance. Unfortunately I do not have a time estimate for when this will be resolved, though it should be resolved very shortly. I apologize for any inconvenience this may be cause you. Thank you for your patience while we get this matter resolved." Chatted with the mail carrier about missing Netflix discs. Snack: scallion pancake. Made edits to my haircut, showered. Snack: tortilla chips, organic hummus. iMac surgery: reformat and reinstall to hopefully resolve frequent gay beach ball of death, especially when using my Windows 7 VM in VMware Fusion 3.1. Dinner at home: 2 small organic tofu veggie burgers with grilled mushrooms, scallions, and organic heirloom tomatoes. Surgery finished. Reinstalled Apple updates and various apps.

Wed Jul 21, 2010

Woke up at 3:22 AM, couldn't sleep, remember waking and immediately wondering how I'm going to figure out what is happening to my Netflix discs which Netflix says they send but which I never receive. 3 so far in the past month. The neighbors upstairs were still awake at this hour. Installed Firefox 3.6.7. Continued VMware Fusion troubleshooting. Back to bed. Breakfast at home: 2 slices of wheat toast with organic peanut butter. To work. Meeting with Cindy and Susie. Lunch to go from Palio's: tuna salad sandwich, gemelli pasta salad. Web master planning: STP document (situation, target, proposal) with Susie. To home. Met upstairs neighbor Ian, chatted with him for a bit. Dinner at home: corn on the cob (no butter); baked potato with organic monterey jack cheese, scallions, yogurt and chive dip; hot water. Over the past 10 days or so I finished a box of 10 assorted flavors of Honolulu Cookie Company pineapple-shaped shortbread cookies that Chris and Nate had given me a while back. Dessert: one white nectarine. TechTool Deluxe surface scan reveals 5 errors: "Media defects cause this test to fail. You should consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again."

Thu Jul 22, 2010

Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: 3-minute advanced plank. Breakfast at home: one sliced granny smith apple, bowl of organic nonfat yogurt with wild huckleberry jam. To work. Dinner at home: burrito with organic flour tortilla, 2 organic scrambled eggs, grilled spinach and mushrooms, organic Monterey Jack cheese, green onions; hot water. Dessert: one burnt caramel tile and a glass of cold nonfat milk. Received and installed my iPhone case: InCase Fluro green. The bottom part is harder to remove than I had expected, and I need to do that so that it will fit in the docking station that I use. Confirmed at around midnight that my iMac hard drive has unresolvable errors and probably needs to be replaced. Late meal: same burrito as earlier except with diced, grilled, organic, heirloom tomato; hot water.

Fri Jul 23, 2010

Yoga: standing warmup practice. Breakfast at home: 2 slices of organic wheat toast with butter, one yellow nectarine, one pink lady apple. To work. Began work on the redesign of the prospective students section requested by Cindy. Lunch with Eric at Baan: basil fried rice with pork for him, salmon salad for me. Cindy recently agreed I could examine the possibility of building the supp app in Drupal so I spent the afternoon setting up a test installation on our staging server. Dinner at KIng of Thai Noodle: #35 with tofu and vegetables. To home. House chores: trash, tidying. Rearranged some furniture. Prepared to take the iMac in for service.

Sat Jul 24, 2010

Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: 3-minute advanced plank. Breakfast at home: 2 potatoes O'Brien breakfast burritos with scrambled egg, scallions, mushrooms, salt, fresh pepper; hot water. Weight training: 3-minute advanced plank. Visited the post office, trying to resolve 5 postal problems: we sometimes receive mail that's not for us, some of my Netflix discs have gone missing, how to stop mail for Brian who lived upstairs but has been deceased for I think over a year, graffiti on a green mailbox at 26th and rivera which I complained about 2 months and 2 weeks ago and it's still there, and how difficult it is to reach someone - I was previously given the supervisor's telephone number but every time I call there's no answer and no way to leave a message. Dropped the iMac off at Apple Store Stonestown: hard drive fails Apple Hardware Test. Lunch at California Crisp in the food court: pasta salad, slice of sourdough bread, iced tea: $5.77. Did some shopping. Drove to Fifth and Mission garage. Saw Inception in IMAX at the Metreon with Andy, Scott, Herman, Jeremy, Andrew C, John B. Andrew C took off. Dinner at Thirsty Bear Brewery with the rest plus Tim C and Ben. Took my car out of the garage ($21), parked near The End Up for Shangri La. To home. Late meal: organic southwestern black bean soup, tortilla chips.

Sun Jul 25, 2010

Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: 3-minute advanced plank. Breakfast at home: organic nonfat yogurt with fresh diced pink lady apple, 2 slices of organic wheat toast with butter, 1 organic banana. Went to Emery's Up Your Alley Fair party. The weather seemed colder than I preferred, so I didn't even go to the UYA Fair itself. I made nametags for the party—they were a hit so much so that an organizer of the VIP lounge at the forthcoming GAPA Runway pageant asked if he could have them for his event, too.

Mon Jul 26, 2010

To work. Logo request work. ITS problem report followup: network problem no longer appears. Began new Drupal research for the supp app project. Dropped off the software dvd master with Judy F for Albert H. 1-on-1 managers meeting with Susie. Web team meeting: content type definitions in The Archive, WCWG redesign review, speed. To home. Dinner at home: organic ramen noodles with snow peas, scallions, shrimp, mushrooms, egg. Picked up the iMac from Apple Store Stonestown. Began restoring data.

Tue Jul 27, 2010

Breakfast at home: organic nonfat yogurt with a tablespoon of Mad River Farm Dune preserves, 2 slices of organic wheat toast with butter. To work. Meeting with Cindy and Rodney: IRC hardware and software upgrades. SEP transition followup with DLS and Vick G and Eric D. Logo request followup with Susie and student CL. Lunch at Panda Express: panda bowl with fried rice and chicken with green beans; brought my UCSF bottle of water with me. My fortune: You will enjoy a trip to Asia. Color printer maintenance. Legal request followup. Placed a security request with DLS. Reviewed the office's emergency action plan from Lucia. More SEP transition followup. Researched virtual desktop infrastructure at other educational institutions. Dinner at home: organic tofu and organic refried bean burritos with sliced mushrooms and scallions, hot water. Researched Seattle things to do for the forthcoming trip. Reenabled extensions in Firefox. Reinstalled Sophos for Mac. Began a full scan in Sophos. Supposedly this will help me find files that are corrupted and cannot be read, which will help me determine if any such files need to be restored from backups earlier than 2 weeks ago when I started having the gay beach ball of death problem that was caused by a defective hard drive which was recently replaced under AppleCare warranty by Apple. Reinstalled the OS X developer tools, confirmed that /usr/bin/setfile was restored. Left the following feedback for Apple on my recent Apple Store Genius Bar experience: "I struggle a bit handling the weight of a 24-inch iMac, and the box is not designed well for a single person to move it from a parking lot to an Apple Store. My guess is that the designers have not actually tried this themselves nor was it part of the usability testing. My hack: I added 2 strips of clear packing tape to the top edge of the box, which prevents the lid from popping open when lifting by the handle and helps a great deal. It would be nice if for heavier equipment like this you offered a cart or skateboard of some sort that could be borrowed and a notice thereof in the appointment reminder. Older customers in particular would appreciate that." Late beverage: cold organic lemon mineral water with corn syrup. (I threw out my homemade simple syrup because I thought it had gone bad, haven't had time to make more.)

Wed Jul 28, 2010

Breakfast at home: same as yesterday. To work. 1-on-1 work meeting with Eric: security work, pushed the WCWG redesign live, facelift speed work, pushed the recent speed improvements live, signed up for the beta program with 2static.it. Followup with Rodney about our hardware purchase proposal for the IRC. Followup with Vick G about SEP. Lunch at Tikka Masala: vegetable biryani, naan, chai. Met with Shirin about orientation edits, then coded her change requests. Supp app work in Drupal. Thought I might need the Multistep module but might not after all. Built out most of the prerequisites section and inserted a bunch of test data. When building the view, I could not figure out how to group items by a particular field—this doesn't look like it's easy to do. I also could not figure out how to redirect to the view after new content for that item was created. Well, I found someone describing a way to do it but it did not look easy to implement. More followup with Vick G about SEP. Worked late til about 7. Dinner at home: refried bean burritos with organic monterey jack cheese, tofu, mushrooms. Inattentively watched half of The Corporation on Netflix DVD. I thought this documentary was way too long and told me things that were obvious. Late beverage: hot organic lemon water with organic raw cane sugar. Repaired a new tie. I had bought a plaid Nautica tie from the boys department at Macy's. When I found it it had a flaw that required a few stitches to fix. It was the last one, so the saleswoman said she could give me 10% off, so I ended up buying the 100% silk tie for less than $14—a great deal, I thought. Restored my Win 7 VM, then did more Windows updates to bring it current: Microsoft, Adobe Reader, Sun Java. Yesterday's scan in Sophos revealed some corrupt or encrypted files that might be problematic but none related to the VM as far as I can tell. Archived documents. Filed transit reimbursement.

Thu Jul 29, 2010

Skipped breakfast. To work. Reconfigured DNS because I wasn't able to connect to certain network folders using the textual domain name (but the IP address would work), solved the problem with Tran's help. Helped student PN find our antivirus software. We recently switched from Sophos to Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) for Windows only. Security software followup with Vick G. 1-on-1 work session with Eric: we experimented with 2static.it to improve the speed of our website. It was very easy to set up, and it worked. It's still in beta, so I'm not wanting to use it for our production site, but we got a few more points in Page Speed with the changes, so we now know firsthand the proof of the value of serving static content from a cookieless domain. City tours edits for Shirin. Drupal webinar about modules in Drupal 7. Drupal 7 looks to be a really nice piece of work. Lunch: leftovers from yesterday's lunch. More city tours edits for Shirin. Snack: 2 small pink lady apples. Left work. Chatted with Shirin on the N train to Powell. Osha Thai on Geary with cousin Jeanne and her friend Lindsay. Afterwards we had drinks at Rye and met with more of Jeanne's childhood friends: Jenny, Alex, Yen-Ting, Tien. To home. Chatted with Ian and Travis from upstairs: oil stains, postal access to the mailbox, dome light in Trooper. Linkchecking for home websites. Restored /usr/local/bin from Time Machine backup because rsync was missing. Chatted with Amtrak on the phone. Late meal: leftovers. Washed dishes.

Fri Jul 30, 2010

Breakfast at home: an apple. Breakfast at Carmelina's: breakfast burrito with scrambled egg. Replaced the grungy mouse pad with a new one for the computer in the student lounge. Career fair web edits for Cindy. Account management for one student. Coded new pages describing how to set up Apple Mail in 10.6 Snow Leopard to connect to UCSF email. Redirected a logo request to Susie. Sarah M had really terrific news about PGP today. Course substitutions web edits for Cindy. Legal name change followup with student EKP. Calendar management. Pushed live the orientation section for Shirin. Skipped lunch. Late afternoon snack: an apple. Investigated a problem that Lisa reported with the job postings form, found a problem, put in a temporary fix. To home. Dinner at home: leftovers. Attempted to install SEP in Win 7 at home, but it failed—I can't remember the error but it was because Sophos wouldn't uninstall. Began watching Princess Mononoke on Netflix DVD but realized after a few minutes that I had already seen it, so stopped. Finished watching Gods of Football: Making of the Calendar on Netflix instant watch. Watched 12 minutes of Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious. Watched 38 minutes of Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip. Washed, dried, and folded laundry while watching. The washer had a problem—the clothes were still soggy so somehow the spin cycle didn't work correctly. Our washer is coin-operated, so I couldn't do anything to fix it except rewash everything again, and that worked.

Sat Jul 31, 2010

Began packing. Resolved a problem introduced following the iMac's return from service at the Apple Store. Sophos for Mac was reporting "Error moving the file to the infected folder" and "Access to the infected file denied". I found that /Users/Shared/Infected did not exist so I created it, and I also reset permissions on that folder for everyone to have read and write access, but that did not fix the problem. I dirty reinstalled Sophos. Separately, in my Win 7 VM, I manually uninstalled Sophos, restarted Windows, then installed SEP. Separately, I received error "Mail wants to use the 'login' keychain" when opening Apple Mail. I opened Keychain Access preferences > First Aid and selected "Synchronize login keychain password with account." Confirmed Win 7 VM has SEP installed correctly. Worked on divorce paperwork. Had planned to have brunch with Drew but he took a raincheck because a receptionist had called in sick. Weeded bookmarks. Laundry. Nap. Grocery shopping. Watched The Outlaugh Festival on Wisecrack Episode 1 on Netflix instant watch while eating a Safeway sandwich. Made 3 loaves of caribbean banana bread. Finished packing. Muni to Embarcadero. Walked to the Amtrak station just south of the Ferry Building Marketplace. Took Amtrak's connecting bus service to Emeryville. Caught the Coast Starlight, meeting Rob, Lani, Jeremy, Matthew, Kiana, and Akemi. Jer had saved 2 small slices of cheese pizza for me. I ate a cherry yogurt. I haven't traveled by train like this since 2000.
