Ran in place to Virtual Run Down Mammoth Mountain CA via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, chopped almonds, and blueberries; water to drink. We also watched some of Live: Mardi Gras Coverage from WWL-TV in New Orleans via WWLTV on YouTube. Handled two web editor permissions requests. 1:1 with Eric. HR import to CM. Lunch: leftover lentil salad, leftover cream of sweet potato soup, water. Edited a Powerpoint flyer for E&I. Chatted with Alexa R on the phone then published a QBI event for her. Listened to a podcast called Author Scott Berkun on Managing Distributed Teams with Respect—good stuff. Helped Levi with advice for content structure on a new DEI page he's working on. Helped Liana troubleshoot a problem with sending an Outlook event to our listservs. I could not figure out the problem, and at my suggestion she submitted a help request to IT. Resolved a problem with a redirect problem with James's help: delete the file and then the redirect works—who knew? Dinner at home with Patrick: Mexican quinoa with black beans and avocado, water, white wine. I played Frogger in Toy Town on Apple Arcade on Apple TV. We watched various YouTube videos then The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s3:e4 on Amazon Prime Video. Break: more Frogger. We watched standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I joined him and we cuddled a while. I washed dishes. Fridge cleaning. Late snack: one carrot with hummus.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and blueberries; water to drink. Did some cleaning in the bathroom before showering. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. First day back to Parnassus in three months. Cleaned desk surfaces. Troubleshot problems sending an Outlook event to listservs. Swapped offices with Bo because I forgot my charger. Demoed for our team a branded Photoshop template for images in Facebook posts. Lunch to go from Panda Express: brown rice bowl with orange chicken, water from my water bottle. Ate in the office. My fortune: Love first—then everything will follow. E&I event communication troubleshooting and workaround. Focus group prep meeting with Anne and Eric. Encountered in the office today: Tom K, Bo O, Karen G, Robin C. Started chkdsk on an external hard drive that needed checking. Dinner at Fiorella with Patrick: cocktails: speziata for Patrick, te nero for me. We ate four small dishes: vegetable fritti, yellowtail crudo, citrus and olive salad, minestrone soup. Water to drink. Patrick also had a glass of vino blanco fiorella (house wine). No dessert this time. All the dishes were well-executed. We especially liked the unbelievably light and delicate fritti, the flavor profile of the citrus and olive salad, and the vibrantly flavored crudo. $133.78 after a $22 tip for Jeremiah H who was an excellent server. All staff were pleasant and polite. We sat upstairs adjacent to the small room way in the back which we were told was being changed into a space for private rental. Doors were added, and curtains added in front of that. We enjoyed our visit and will likely return soon. Today Patrick made chocolate cacao nib crunch ice cream. He had a small bowl, and I had just a bite. We watched standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I joined him and we cuddled a while. Gift research.
Thu Mar 3, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and blueberries; water to drink. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus, chatting with Kevin S along the way. We talked about getting rid of our cars, the CIA, the pandemic, health, our families, reading and spending time while sheltering in place, and life changes. So good to have run into him. More E&I event all day. Documented a small home page display problem I discovered. Lunch to go from Cafe Bellini: brown-rice-patty veggie burger on whole wheat bun, sweet potato fries. I ate in the office. Water from my water bottle. Met with Anne: focus group prep. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom barley soup, water, red wine. Patrick washed dishes. We watched We watched Star Trek: Discovery s4:e11 on Paramount+. I walked in place while watching. Patrick went to bed.
Fri Mar 4, 2022
Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. E&I event send workaround (bcc)—seemingly successful. Short D9 meeting with Eric and James. People pages focus group meeting with Anne. Debrief with Anne. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself a noodle soup with roast chicken and ginger broth; corn, brown rice, and quinoa spaghetti; four pork and shrimp dumplings from frozen; four beef and carrot dumplings from frozen; spinach; green onions; cilantro. D9 teamstorming meeting with the team. git troubleshooting with James. We couldn't work it out easily, so I decided to abandon the entire repo and reclone. Recently a new work laptop arrived to replace my 15-inch MacBook Pro purchased in 2017. The laptop I have been using has macOS Catalina. The new laptop has macOS Monterey. (I'm skipping Big Sur in between.) I'm doing a clean setup to avoid possible cruft, so there will be a fair amount of manual configuration. Laptop setup meeting with Kevin P from IT, which was a really nice experience. The laptop from CDW was preconfigured for UCSF, but it took a while to download some needed files, so I agreed to let Kevin off the line, and I would email him when ready. Back on the old laptop, the git reclone was successful. UCSF town hall. Patrick made chickpea-flour biscuits today. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover mushroom barley soup, chickpea biscuits, water, red wine. We watched Picard s2:e1 on Paramount+. Did more new computer setup, installing apps that IT did not install for me, transferring settings manually since I did not want to auto-transfer data and apps. IT gave me Adobe Acrobat 2017, which I deleted from the Applications folder (plain delete—no uninstaller), then installed Adobe Creative Cloud because that license includes Acrobat DC.
Sat Mar 5, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and diced pear; water to drink. Washed dishes. Cleaned the kitchen floor and other areas. Cleaned and repaired earbud headphones with rubbing alcohol and white Sugru. The white color easily picks up lint even after washing my hands with soap and drying with a lint-free cloth—it's terrible. House chores. More new computer setup variously throughout the day, installing apps that IT did not install for me, transferring settings manually. Nap. Lunch: leftover noodle soup. Patrick made Martha Stewart's Movie-Theater-Style Popcorn which we ate while watching West Side Story on Disney+. I walked in place while watching part of it. We took a break after Gee, Officer Krupke. Patrick made us cocktails: mezcal margarita. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Underdogs Tres: Nick's Way baja fish taco for me, baja burrito for Patrick, side of rice and beans, chips with salsa and guacamole, Mexican Coke for Patrick. Late snack: tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole, water.
Sun Mar 6, 2022
Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. More new computer setup variously throughout the day, installing apps that IT did not install for me, transferring settings manually. Late morning small meal with Patrick: egg and cheddar on chickpea biscuit, water. Chatted with Ashley L on the phone after she was referred to me by Aggie G. I helped Ashley understand some things about PDFs with which she needed a little help. Late lunch with Patrick: we walked to New Taraval Cafe. Patrick ordered a fried chicken sandwich with steak fries and iced tea. I ordered a California burrito. Water for both. The iced tea never arrived. $30 after a $5 tip. They were very apologetic about forgetting the iced tea. Near the end we also had difficulty getting our check for quite a while because no server was paying attention to us. The food was good, and other than those issues it was a nice experience. Walked home. More new computer setup and config. Helped Ashley again. Snack instead of dinner since still full from lunch: tortilla chips and salsa. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s3:e5 on Amazon Prime Video. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.
Mon Mar 7, 2022
Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, diced dried pineapple, and diced dried mango; water to drink. More new computer setup variously throughout the day, installing git repos, transferring settings manually. Person page work: Rupa T. D7 styling fixes for the forthcoming DEI page. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Siteimprove linkchecking. Cam Mon research for Eric: how to send automated email out of schedule. Met with Levi G and Gina N and applicants for a position on our team. Afternoon snack: Chobani greek yogurt, blueberries, chopped almonds, pumpkin seeds. Water to drink. More laptop setup: begin installing github repos. Realized that Sidecar does not work with the new laptop. The iPad simply does not appear under Add Display in Display system preferences like it should. I tried restarting both devices. I tried logging out and logging in with Apple ID for both devices. Still no luck. Gave up for now. Installed homebrew. Sam joined us for dinner: delivery from Lemonade West Portal: grass-fed steak and green bean bowl with heirloom red rice for Sam, spicy hawaiian ahi poke bowl with heirloom red rice for Patrick, mango chicken bowl with heirloom red rice for me. Water to drink. Sam departed. I washed dishes. Cocktails: aviations. Patrick and I watched various YouTube videos. Patrick had a small bowl of cheese puffs while watching. Patrick went to bed. More new computer setup and config.
Tue Mar 8, 2022
Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, blueberries; water to drink. Began using the new MacBook Pro full-time even though not all the setup and config is complete. Enough is to get most work done, though. Tested the completion of the renaming of our resource account that we use for our vacation calendar. Prepped an announcement for the team about it. 1:1 with Eric. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself noodle soup with brown rice spaghetti, Patrick's vegetable broth, tofu, shrimp, egg, super greens, grape tomatoes, mushrooms, furikake. Water to drink. Met with Levi G and Gina N and applicants for a position on our team. Helped Alfonz S and Lisa C with a problem with HIVE newsletters ending up in Proofpoint quarantine. Submitted a new request to UCSF Brand Comm for a desktop license for Granjon. For some reason when setting up the new computer, I could not find any old font files that still worked I think because they are older font formats that don't work on macOS Monterey. Dinner at home with Patrick: marmitako (Basque tuna and potato soup), water, red wine. Afterwards we watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Troubleshot a problem in which AirDrop worked only in one direction: from the new laptop I could see the old laptop and not the other way around. I resolved it by temporarily turning off the firewall on the new laptop. This made it visible on the old laptop. However, the solution wasn't sticky. Once the firewall was enabled again, it disappeared from the old laptop. This happened even after on the new laptop I added /usr/libexec/sharingd to accept all connections. Later I tried resolving a problem with importing a database into PHPMyAdmin but failed because the upload filesize was limited to 2048 KiB. What eventually fixed it for me was altering .docksal/docksal.yml to add "- UPLOAD_LIMIT=1024M" under the environment section for phpmyadmin, then in pma select the database called default before importing. The import got further than it did in the past, but after a long time I got an error: "Cannot connect: invalid settings" and "#2006 - MySQL server has gone away". Late snack: dry roasted unsalted cashews, one heirloom navel orange.
Wed Mar 9, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, blueberries; water to drink. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Chatted again with Kevin S. This time I learned the story of how he and Daniel obtained their home by way of a serendipitous connection with the seller as well as a podcast series of Joseph Hansen gay detective stories as mentioned on NPR. After being at work a short while, I visited the Experience Parnassus exhibit in the Faculty/Alumni House, meeting Abby, Brad, and Christine. I wore virtual reality goggles of different types to experience the new building in a variety of ways. I observed the many exhibits which explained the process, the history, the community involvement, and more. Back to the office. Prepped a person page task for possible crosstraining to Anne. Completed an effort estimate survey for Eric. Followup with Alfonz and Lisa about DKIM config for the HIVE newsletter. Lunch at Fresca: chicken salad, water. Delicious! I forced myself to eat as much of the large serving as I could since I knew it wouldn't be good as a dish saved for later. Asana task followup. Met with Raj to review the listserv event delivery issue. Followup with a grad programs data pull issue: a change from http to https. Followup with Alfonz and Anne about people pages work. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: bulgur salad with lemon, chickpeas, and vegetables; water; red wine. Afterwards we watched various trailers and YouTube videos and then Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You. Patrick could not stop laughing, and I was not far behind. Patrick went to bed. I continued trying to see if I could resolve my D7 git repo woes on the new laptop. Failed. I washed dishes then read and provided notes on an unpolished draft of the first story of Patrick's new short story collection which is about two students taking a trip to Galatoire's. It's a fine story, even in this unfinished form, and it was a pleasure to read.
Thu Mar 10, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, blueberries; water to drink. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Chatted with Liana about yesterday's meeting with IT and about signs in the hotel space. Completed a digital letterhead request for Ryan G in Adam R's lab. Many people were in the office today: Eric, Alesia, Liana, Tom. D9 check-in meeting with James and Eric. We troubleshot Mac M1 issues with Docker. Followup with people pages with Alfonz. Followup with HIVE DKIM with Alfonz and Lisa. Met with Anne to review people pages work. Late lunch: leftover bulgur salad, water from my water bottle. Met with coworkers in OSACA and Development to discuss how to handle the Student Awards and Recognition Ceremony in the short term and long term. Followup with Cheryl and Emma about adding two new person pages. Troubleshot problems with the copier emailing scans to Alesia. Set up and tested printing and scanning to two devices. Printed signs explaining workstation choices for the hotel space in S126. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: variation on Martha Stewart's spaghetti with shrimp, kale, and burst tomatoes using chickpea linguine instead of traditional spaghetti, water. Dessert: one Wilhelmina mint each. I washed dishes. We watched Star Trek: Discovery s4:e12 on Paramount+ (a very exciting episode) then standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: one heirloom navel orange; dry roasted unsalted cashews, water.
Fri Mar 11, 2022
Walked in place to various YouTube videos. (Had a leg cramp last night.) Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, blueberries; water to drink. Responded to a request from Michael D about website layouts and our D9 project. Sidecar started working today. I hadn't changed anything. I hadn't restarted. I have no idea what fixed it. Just yesterday I tested with Eric's iPad and it failed then just like mine. Patrick made homemade parmesan crisps today. All day: prepped posts for the Brand and Identity channel in Teams. Lunch at home: leftover marmitako, water, cherry lemonade (water, lemon juice, bing cherry juice). Worked outside in the back yard for part of the afternoon. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers from last night for Patrick, leftover noodle soup and leftover bulgur salad for me. Water to drink. Cocktails: I made quarter horses with slightly less simple syrup. Patrick made Martha Stewart's Movie-Theater-Style Popcorn. We watched We watched Star Trek: Picard s2:e2 on Paramount+. This episode was bonkers and a lot of fun. I walked in place for part of the time while watching. Afterwards we watched standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. I placed more hardware orders.
Sat Mar 12, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Sweater maintenance: pill removal. Most of the day: first pass edit of Patrick's first story in his new short story collection. (I had to do this again because of problems using Microsoft Word for Mac across our network.) Lunch: leftover marmitako, water. Snack: pretzel sticks. Vacuumed. Cut my hair, showered. Vacuumed. Cleaned the bathroom. Changed air purifier pre-filters. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover chickpea linguine with shrimp, water. Cocktails: Manhattans. We watched mostly standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.
Sun Mar 13, 2022
Daylight saving time switchover: spring forward. Slept in. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Spent time today researching alternatives to Pinboard. My renewal is coming soon, the price has doubled from $11/year to $22/year, and I haven't been happy with the service because it's often slow to respond and because Maciej Ceglowski ignored my support request for resolving a problem a while back. Rested. Lunch at home with Patrick: I prepared for us potato-and-mung-bean-noodle soup with super greens, soft-boiled egg, diced red onion, firm tofu minicubes, sliced mushrooms, ginger juice, lime juice, a mix of veggie and seafood broths, and furikake. Water to drink. Sam gave us a ride to Kerry and Mom's place. We chatted on the phone with Dianne while we drove. At their place Patrick colored his mom's hair red, and Kerry and I installed an HDMI cable but failed to get a new cable box working. All seems correct except the cable box just doesn't work. Kerry will contact Comcast/Xfinity tomorrow to resolve it. From their place Patrick and I walked to and around the Castro. We stopped at Harvey’s where they checked our vaccination cards: a negroni for Patrick, a Stoli peach lemonade for me, onion rings with ketchup. Patrick asked for bbq sauce but it never arrived and we didn't complain. Afterwards I stopped at Cliff's for white polyester thread. We dined at Wilkommen where they checked our vaccination cards: duo (cheddar brat, smoked hot), schnitzel, helles .5L for Patrick, Imagery pinot noir for me. Rode UberX home because the Muni predictions either were nonexistent or changed to later times. At home we watched 1h12m of The Adam Project on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed.
Mon Mar 14, 2022
Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Posted a mini essay on brand and identity in the Teams channel for it. Investigated alternatives to Pinboard for social bookmarking. Lunch at home: leftover bulgur wheat salad with mixed greens and diced red onion, yogurt with strawberry preserves and chopped almonds, water. Read CSS Layout News 337. Dinner at home with Patrick: red lentil soup, water. We finished watching The Adam Project on Netflix instant watch with Martha Stewart's Movie-Theater-Style Popcorn and reduced-sugar gin fizzes then watched standup comedy and an SNL clip on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I imported my Pinboard bookmarks html export into Firefox. Firefox hung I think because the 2.3 MB file had 9,824 bookmarks. The first time, I had thought it didn't import anything (no feedback), so I imported again. It hung again. Then after finding them in the bookmarks root (rather than a folder called something like import.2022.0314) I realized it did import twice. So then I had to install the Bookmark Dupes extension for Firefox and spent the next half hour or so letting it automatically remove dupes. That hung at 33% completion. Force quit. Restarted Firefox. Restarted the dedupe process. It finally finishes. Began learning how best to quickly access bookmarks in Firefox using shortcuts in the address bar like caret for history and asterisk for bookmarks. I washed dishes. Late snack: whole-milk cottage cheese with sliced banana and chopped almonds, water with a bit of lemon juice.
Tue Mar 15, 2022
Slept in I think due to still processing the daylight saving time change. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Tested Edit My Record in UCSF Directory to confirm that it does not require VPN, documented the potential error, and notified Alfonz and others. 1:1 with Eric. Chatted briefly with Anne and Eric about Edit My Record. Removed Tom J from some tools we use. Reimported Pinboard bookmarks and resolved dupes in order to resolve missing tags. Lesson learned: Firefox may hang, but it will finish if you leave it alone. So it looks like I'll stop using Pinboard partly due to the doubling of the price (from $11/year to $22/year) but also partly because of non-existant support and slow server response times and incorrect keyboard user interface behavior in the tag field while autocompleting (Enter should select the selected item but doesn't—so annoying). What I'm using instead: exported bookmarks from Pinboard as HTML, imported to Firefox (if many Firefox will appear to hang—just leave it be and it will eventually finish). Still haven't figured out the social sharing part of my solution. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself a noodle soup using leftover noodle soup and fresh mixed greens and chicken broth and shrimp. Water to drink. Completed the facilities satisfaction survey, providing these comments: "Floors and toilets in high-traffic bathrooms need to be a lot cleaner. Once, midday, I found all but one toilet clogged. The Tork paper towel dispensers are awful because if you don't pull them just right with both hands the paper tears away. This wastes little scraps of paper that end up on the sink and floor areas. These scraps clog sink drains. They stick to shoes while walking out. The two-hands requirement is ridiculous. Have you tried getting a paper towel while holding a contact lens with one hand? While holding a baby that vomited? So many problems could be resolved by abandoning the Tork dispensers." More new laptop setup, mostly resolving problems. If OneDrive icons and options aren't appearing in Finder, unsync then resync the folder. If Cmd+Space Spotlight fails to work, try Cmd+Option+Space instead or resync your folders expecting to sync. If Spotlight fails to show results for what you typed, just wait a few minutes or try Cmd+Option+Space. It might be reindexing. If selecting a OneDrive folder in Spotlight does nothing, avoid selecting ones with a cloud icon and instead select the same-named folder with a folder icon. Afternoon snack: whole-grain crackers with flax seed topped with Tillamook sharp cheddar (cold). Docker setup on new laptop. I ran in place while playing Frogger in Toy Town on Apple Arcade on Apple TV. Dinner at home with Patrick: broccoli frittata with avocado slices, water. Cocktails: I prepared Blind Lemon Jeffersons for us. I washed dishes. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s3:e6 on Amazon Prime Video then standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Read and provided notes on a draft of Patrick's second story in his new short story collection. Late snack: hummus with celery sticks, whole-grain crackers with flax seed, unsalted cashews, water.
Wed Mar 16, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. E&I meeting on Zoom. Chatted with Karen about wiki permissions. Tested the new Logitech M190 mouse in the hotel space that Karen had set up. It works fine. Set up meetings to discuss ResourceSpace with the team. Troubleshot D7 repo setup with James. E&I calendar item send. Lunch to go from Carmelina's: taco grande with carnitas (corn tortillas), not spicy. To drink: water from my water bottle. Troubleshot a problem with an image encountering error 503 service unavailable for Kazuko and Anne. Chatted in Teams with Jill W about GAAD. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie and refried bean whole-wheat-tortilla quesadillas with guacamole, water. Patrick also had a beer. Afterwards we watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s3:e7 on Amazon Prime Video. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Set up a new Dell P2721Q monitor for Patrick. It took longer than I had expected—two hours—mostly because the only screws I had for the French cleat wall mount bracket I'm using turned out to be too long. I had thought I would have to saw the screws shorter but then I realized I had enough of the right pieces of hardware to fashion a workaround by padding the extra spacing with nuts and washers. Prepped the old monitor for giving to Sam. Late snack: Chobani yogurt with blackberries and chopped almonds, water.
Thu Mar 17, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted slivered almonds, and blackberries; water to drink. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. I heard a fan start in the hotel space which is my temporary office, and cold air blew on me the whole day. Gathered proposed images for the commencement web page. Reviewed and published an event for Alexa R. Rode the gold shuttle to a medical appointment, chatting with Tom K while waiting for the shuttle. Medical appointment went quicker than I had expected. Lunch at The San Francisco Athletic Club: salmon salad, water. The salad was delicious and was made special by the inclusion of a grilled lemon half which made it super easy to add lemon juice to the salmon. The salmon was a good size—a bit larger than my fist—and perfectly cooked and visually pleasing with crosshatch grill lines. Service was good but could have been more attentive. $15 before a $3.40 tip. Stopped briefly at Pasta Brothers, a new gourmet market filled with Italian dry and fresh pastas and other foods and cooking ingredients—a great selection. Rode the blue shuttle to Parnassus. Visited S960 and consulted with Lucia on ethernet ports in the student lounge. She also gave me a gift bag containing a small candle, two pill-shaped extendable pens, and a sticker saying Future PharmD UCSF. It was an extra left over. Edgar M was in the office. We toured other spaces on 9, many of which I had not seen in their most recent renovations. Along the way I also met and greeted Julia and Julie. Office hours event planning meeting with Anne and Levi. Watched Nano Text Editor Basics (pico) - How to Use Nano on Linux / Mac (Beginners Guide on Ubuntu 20.04) via SavvyNik on YouTube after seeing how it recently enabled James to edit files inside a Docker virtual machine where neither vi nor vim was installed. Why is paste Ctrl+U, though? Investigated the possibility of using LucidChart for our orgcharts. The upload-a-spreadsheet possibility is intriguing. I'll consult with Eric. Not sure if we can do this without a business associate agreement. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: muffaletta, water. Attempted to attach my previous Time Machine hard drive to the new computer and inherit its backup with "sudo tmutil inheritbackup" and this resulted in 'Unexpectedly found no machine directories for "/Volumes/[volumename]" during collision check.' This led me to enabling full disk access privacy for the terminal app I'm using. Trying again then resulted in 'Failed to inherit machine store at '(null)', error: Error Domain=TMStructureErrorDomain Code=7 "Structure has wrong type" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Structure has wrong type}' and at this point I gave up because the solution offered by klanomath on Ask Different seemed like more time than it was worth to me. I reformatted the drive as APFS Encrypted and started Time Machine anew. After dinner I made us aviation cocktails. We watched We watched Star Trek: Discovery s4:e13 on Paramount+ (season finale) then some standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.
Fri Mar 18, 2022
Had trouble sleeping last night due to insomnia. Various sleep aids did not work at first but finally did. Sleep Cycle thinks I got 92% sleep quality, but I think that's just because I remained in bed longer in order to account for the lost sleep. Walked in place while playing new games on Apple Arcade: Zen Pinball Party and Projection: First Light. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, untoasted slivered almonds, and blackberries; water to drink. Decided to take a sick day since I seemed to have fatigue and headache from getting a shingles vaccine yesterday. I can't recall the last time I took a sick day. Slept three hours then rested 1.5 hours. Lunch: leftover quarter of whole-wheat-tortilla quesadilla with refried beans and guacamole, water. The new iPad Air 5th generation arrived, and I was still groggy but okay enough to set it up by transferring settings from our iPad Air 4th gen model. All went well except it was confusing how to get UCSF email working again due to error message "You can't get there from here" which is not very helpful. I figured it out after some digging. After all had seemed like it was transferred and working, I erased the old iPad Air in preparation for giving it to Sam. Slept three hours; Patrick joined. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Mahalo via Uber Eats: fish sandwich and thai iced tea for Patrick, fish and shrimp combo with side salad and water for me. I washed dishes. We watched Star Trek: Picard s2:e3 on Paramount+ then a few videos on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I watched today's UCSF town hall.
Sat Mar 19, 2022
Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Nap with Patrick. Late lunch: I had leftover red lentil soup and leftover fried fish and brown rice from last night. Water to drink. Began tax filing work. Late dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Park Gyros via Uber Eats: chicken kebab plate for Patrick, chicken gyro salad for me, side of tabouleh. No problems with the order or delivery except that the tabouleh contained no cracked wheat at all. It was parsley with a few tiny bits of tomato and dressing; the wheat part was completely missing. Cocktails: aperol spritzes. Patrick went to bed. I continued work on taxes. Resolved git pull warning 'Requested but did not find extension point with identifier Xcode.IDEKit.ExtensionSentinelHostApplications for extension Xcode.DebuggerFoundation.AppExtensionHosts.watchOS of plug-in com.apple.dt.IDEWatchSupportCore' by executing 'sudo xcode-select -r' since xcode tools were already installed. More tax prep. To bed late.
Sun Mar 20, 2022
Slept in. Late breakfast: medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. Continued tax filing preparations. Today I learned that menu bar icons on a MacBook Pro with a notch do sometimes squeeze and do sometimes disappear into the notch. The way I am dealing with this is to remove as many icons as I can (e.g., System Preferences → Dock & Menu Bar) optimizing menu bar placement for the icons I really need and relegating the ones I need less to two-or-more-clicks access via the Control Center. If you have Sidecar running, you can also look to your iPad to see what icons might be hidden under the notch on the laptop screen. With tax prep I encountered a problem with the tax service I chose to use this year that is specific to people in domestic partnerships. I don't think they are going to resolve the problem, so I will likely need to resort to a different service which might cost us a lot more money. No lunch since I woke late and had a late breakfast. Afternoon snack: blue corn tortilla chips with guacamole, water. Trash maintenance and management. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Champa Garden via Uber Eats: yum nam tok (lemongrass beef salad) for me, house special (fried catfish with eggplant) and sticky rice for Patrick, fried wrapped chicken spring rolls for both. We dined with mint juleps prepared by Patrick. Patrick had coffee ice cream for dessert. We watched various things on YouTube then started watching The Sparks Brothers on Netflix instant watch. Break. Continued watching until 43m34s. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.
Mon Mar 21, 2022
Walked and ran in place to NPR Life Kit podcasts via Apple TV. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, and sliced banana; water to drink. ResourceSpace interview with Levi. Office hours meeting with Eric, Levi, and Anne. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. ResourceSpace interview with Anne. Lunch at home: leftover rice noodles with leftover lemongrass beef sauce and chopped mint and cilantro; small mixed greens salad with cheddar, sliced mushrooms, and blue cheese dressing; water to drink. ResourceSpace interview with James. git pull warning returned: 'Requested but did not find extension point with identifier Xcode.IDEKit.ExtensionSentinelHostApplications for extension Xcode.DebuggerFoundation.AppExtensionHosts.watchOS of plug-in com.apple.dt.IDEWatchSupportCore'. Again I executed 'sudo xcode-select -r' since xcode tools were already installed. git pull again no longer has the problem. Later I realized that I suspect that the problem happens on the first git pull following a laptop restart, so "sudo xcode-select -r" alone did not really fix it. See two days from now. Troubleshot D7 repo setup issues with James. Dinner at home with Patrick: salmon with quinoa, mint, and cucumber salad; water; red wine. Patrick's new MacBook Pro arrived today, and I transferred his laptop apps and data to the new laptop using Migration Assistant. At first I connected the two laptops with a USB-C cable but within a few minutes I realized that what I needed was a Thunderbolt cable, and I didn't have one. The next best thing was gigabit ethernet, which I did have, even if only temporarily due to one ethernet adapter on its way back to be returned. That significantly increased the throughput over peer-to-peer wifi. The transfer completed successfully, and I spent some time configuring everything properly for Patrick. Ordered a Thunderbolt cable. Late snack: cottage cheese, sliced banana, pumpkin seeds; water to drink.

Troubleshot filesharing problems between Macs on our network. I think what fixed it was using chmod at the command line and then also turning file sharing off then on again. Read and provided notes on the third story in Patrick's new short story collection. Lost all my edits due to a problem with Microsoft Word creating extra folders when saving an edited document across the network. I have never seen behavior so stupid from an application. After making edits and saving, Word creates six empty folders with names that resemble the document I'm editing and with random strings at the end. Then when I close the document, it asks me if I want to save the document, which is dumb because I just saved it. It should not be asking me this. I say yes, save, and it closes, but then a few seconds later the same document reopens automatically. So frustrating. Spent over an hour troubleshooting and could not resolve it. Gave up for now. I did not have this problem on my old MacBook Pro, and I don't know what differences would cause this behavior. Late snack: Chobani yogurt with blueberries and toasted coconut, water.

Spent 40 minutes resolving permissions problems on Patrick's computer after last night's problems. I solved some of the problems with a solution by joneskoo on Apple StackExchange involving ACLs. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted coconut, pumpkin seeds, and sliced banana; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. I left with more than enough time to spare, but while approaching the bus stop the bus appeared about 6 minutes ahead of the prediction. Late snack: small bowl of sliced banana, creamy peanut butter, and toasted coconut. Water to drink.

Troubleshot problems on Patrick's computer with launching Chrome—nothing happens. Reinstalling did not fix it. Uninstalling, restarting, and reinstalling fixed it. Continued installing updates for Patrick's computer. Troubleshot problems with Time Machine. Unable to resolve. Had to erase the existing backup and start anew. That failed, too. The error is: "Backup not completed: Disk [name] contains backups created on a different computer." Software updates for my work computer. Troubleshot and resolved problems inheriting backup from the cloud backup service—very annoying. Deauthorized and erased the old entertainment computer and installed macOS Monterey on it in preparation for giving it to Sam.
