Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced quarter banana; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Organized files. Lunch: leftover baked petrale sole with Greek ladolemono dressing, corn off the cob from frozen, leftover sauteed mushrooms; water. Team meeting: social media strategy. Dinner at Teakwood with Patrick. Cocktails: Patrick had Letters from Myanmar (Suntori whiskey, 5 Spice demerara, bitters blend, peaty mist), I had Tea Punch (black tea infused mezcal, Mekhong spirit, orange pekoe, lemon). The meal: tea leaf salad, platha, burmese fried chicken. The tea leaf salad had jalapenos on the side, but Patrick said they were not spicy. Today the chili jam included with the chicken was not spicy even to me. Our meal was delicious and perfect. The platha is particularly heavenly and just the right amount of richness. Server Dylan was excellent. While circling the block by foot to pass time before a show, we encountered and chatted briefly with Lucie who was accompanied by her mom (and others?), not long before her international departure to Ireland. Patrick and I attended Kid Koala: Nufonia Must Fall at SFJAZZ. This was Patrick's first time and my second time seeing this show. It was again incredible to watch. We each had a Manhattan. Rode Lyft home. Patrick went to bed. Resolved the recurring problem in which my Mac cannot connect to Patrick's Mac using the usual solution. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Geotagged lots of ungeotagged content on Flickr.

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced nectarine; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Weeded, organized, and sorted credentials given to me by Eric. Migrated some credentials from what I used before UCSF provided a password manager to the UCSF-provided password manager. Errand: returned an item. Lunch at Street Taco which opened a new restaurant at 83 9th Street: caesar salad with carne asada, chips and pico de gallo, pina agua fresca. More passwords cleanup. Walked and rode Muni home. Patrick and I rode Muni to dinner with some of The Syndicate at Brothers to celebrate a birthday. Along the way he shared some embargoed news with me. Also along the way we encountered Galen and Brendon on the bus. In attendance: Galen B, Brendon L, Buck F, Scott T, Jose C, John C, John T, Tim C, Kam S, Dan B, Andy M, Patrick, and me. Afterwards Patrick returned home and most of the rest of us went to Kam and Dan's place where the celebration continued. At first I didn't remember visiting their place before, but while I was there I started remembering different things like the kitchen island, and later my journal helped me remember that the last time I was here was on February 8, 2020, for their housewarming party. I chatted a lot with Brendon and Andy about learning Spanish. The television briefly played clips from The Boyfriend (Netflix) among other things. An assortment of wines were opened and enjoyed. We enjoyed a tiramisu mousse cake from Schubert's: chocolate sponge cake with a lighter version of mascarpone filling flavored with coffee liqueur, iced in whipped cream and garnished with white and dark chocolate shavings and ladyfingers. Rode Lyft home after an attempted trip with Uber failed because the driver started the trip before I was picked up and ended the trip a few minutes later. I got a refund in the Uber app within a few minutes without needing to talk or chat with a human.

Sat Aug 3, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced nectarine; hot water. Sewing projects: made more handwarmer covers from an old pair of corduroy jeans, altered the hem on one beige t-shirt because it was too long. The handwarmer covers took little time even as I made the mistake of not turning them inside out before sewing; I just threw the mistakes away and cut new ones. The t-shirt took four hours because I still had lots of trouble adjusting tension. Afterwards Patrick visited his mom while I sat in Dolores Park reading How Stella Learned to Talk from Patrick's Kindle. Patrick and I met for dinner. We tried to eat at El Tucan but it was too crowded and there was a sign on the door that said the bathroom was out of order. We instead ate at Zona Rosa which was empty and the bathroom was working. Two tacos each, Topo Chico for both. About $33. We had drinks at Copper, first one round of non-alcoholic drinks, then one round of alcoholic drinks. About $65. We encountered and chatted briefly with Jeff C and David M. Walked and rode Muni home. It was especially cold tonight.

Sun Aug 4, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced nectarine; hot water. Cleaned the bathroom. Cut my hair, showered. Cleaned the bathroom. Lunch: I prepared for myself a mushroom and cheddar tartine using leftover grilled mushrooms and sourdough bread from frozen, one navel orange, water. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni to 15th Avenue House to visit Phil, Drew, Tai, Wayne, Bao, and Tienya. We chatted and drank and ate snacks: dim sum, cookies, grapes, cherries, scones, and more. Patrick and I walked and rode Muni home. Patrick had planned to make dinner but was too tired so we instead ordered from Perilla via DoorDash: beef noodle soups, imperial rolls with lettuce wraps and dipping sauce, water. We watched Warrior s3:e3 on Netflix then various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I chatted with Lani and Dex over Zoom. I washed dishes. Late snack: baked pretzel from frozen.

Mon Aug 5, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Spent most of the day on the academic affairs content build. Lunch from Panda Express: plate with chow mein, beef with broccoli, and string bean chicken. Ate with Suzan in Katherine's office, which still works as our lunch room. My fortune: Don't dwell on things you cannot change. Team meeting: new year message, facts and figures, content audit and maintenance. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Nico Pallotta's pasta e fagioli, hot water. Patrick also had a glass of sherry. We watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: one navel orange, water. I washed dishes. Later snacks: salted cashews, mini pretzels, water.

Tue Aug 6, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana, blueberries; hot water. Found a Panda Express fortune in my pocket from a long-ago meal: Revel in the spotlight. Took a day off from work to spend with Patrick shopping and enjoying San Francisco. We visited Bloomingdale's men and nothing fit me—too big or too baggy. The boys department had very few items even counting the Ralph Lauren Polo section, so I didn't try anything on. Bloomingdale's style advisor Kathy Lenahan helped us look in womens, and I tried on lots of items but nothing was perfect. She was very dedicated to finding something that worked for me. We thanked her and left. We walked and rode Muni to the Ferry Building Marketplace. After browsing the entire mall we ate at a creperie. Patrick had a forestière (mushroom and cheddar) crepe and latte. I had a salmon and spinach crepe and iced chai. We walked and rode a crowded streetcar to Patagonia on North Point Street. Although the website said they had mens XXS sizes in stock I was told that they don't actually have mens XXS sizes due to a problem with the website. I tried on an XXL boys/kids which was too wide. The XL boys/kids was about the correct width but the sleeves were too short. We watched and enjoyed Roadrunner on SFPL DVD. Patrick went to bed. Late snacks: one banana chip, mini pretzels, toasted cheddar and rosemary on sourdough, water. Updated medic alert cheat sheets that I carry in my wallet and my phone pouch.

Wed Aug 7, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana, blueberries; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Followup with a problem report regarding a UCSF website: they fixed lgbt.ucsf.edu failing to redirect to lgbtq.ucsf.edu. Research: higher education and email marketing trends. 1:1 with Katherine. Installed an HDMI cable with the display in Katherine's office. Updated Wilder Lab website to link to their preferred X account. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work all day. Lunch with Katherine, Suzan, and Bernard in Saunders Court at one of the yellow tables. Small updates to the Brand Identity website. Digital letterhead work. Resolved gallery issues for Craik Lab website. Workflow and tools meeting with Katherine and Suzan. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: falafel in whole wheat pita with cucumbers, tomatoes, and feta; hot water. Afterwards we watched various YouTube videos then Reservation Dogs s3:e6 on Hulu then more YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I listened to John Mulaney: New In Town while washing dishes. To bed.

Thu Aug 8, 2024

Toe procedure recovery. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana, blueberries; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Followup with Nadav A and team about web hosting for one of their projects. Small web edit for Arezou R. Credentials management all day. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself a cauliflower burger with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, mayo and fries from frozen with pretzel cheese salt and ketchup; hot water. Academic Affairs content build. Patrick and I rode rideshare from home to Brenda's Soul Kitchen to meet Chris G and Andy T for dinner, drinks, and a show. Brenda's: We shared crawfish beignets. Patrick had red beans and rice. Andy had two-piece fried chicken. Chris had catfish and grits. I had chicken fried steak. Drinks: watermelon sweet tea, bloody mary, hurricane andrew. All food and drink was delicious, and service was excellent. Afterwards we walked to Nightbird for drinks: Blue Velvet (mezcal, fermented plum, pasilla, basil, lime) for Patrick, Rascally Rabbit (gin, carrot, tarragon syrup, suze, lemon) for Andy, Ralphie Boy (bourbon, raspberry, chamomile, lemon, citrus merengue) for Chris, and R U Nuts? (suntori whiskey, pistachio orgeat, alpine, cherry, lemon) for me. The menu is notable: mostly two colors (brown and black), probably inkjet, printed onto paper textured like linen. Instead of a list, it's an illustration of a plant with 12 leaves where each leaf has one of the drink items. In the lower left corner, it says: Parties over 4 people are not allowed even if they are split into smaller groups. We had trouble finding the entrance to Nightbird. It's a red door with a small circular window. The bar is tiny, perhaps eight seats and perhaps standing room for four. What it lacks in size it makes up in elegance and sophistication. All the glassware is notably beautiful. We enjoyed our drinks and the tiny space then departed for a show. At SFJAZZ we four saw Kid Koala: Storyville Mosquito. Patrick and I saw Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall a week ago, and this show was equally entertaining. Andy and Chris gave us a ride home.

Fri Aug 9, 2024

Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus, dropping off a DVD at the library along the way. Met with EFD and Katherine about estimating costs for content migration. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Academic Affairs content build all day. Walked and rode Muni to lunch at Crepevine with Patrick, Matt S, and Jaime M. We hadn't seen Jaime and Matt in years. I last saw them when I visited Madrid in 2017, and Patrick last saw them earlier than that. Matt had a crepe with potatoes. Jaime had a scramble with potatoes. Patrick had La Delice with fries and an iced tea. I had asian chicken salad with a latte. We talked about Holly, Spain, Matt's new work keeping him busy, Jaime's teaching, early retirement, Hawaii, overtourism, and more. Followup with changing email address for one of the school's social media accounts. After work I walked and rode Muni to Syndicate Happy Hour at Copper with Patrick, Mark (whose last name I heard but didn't hear clearly or know how to spell), John B, JY, James VK, Galen B, Brendon L. Afterwards, Galen, Brendon, John B, JY, Patrick, and I dined at Dumpling Kitchen. Patrick went to bed. I practiced Duolingo then cleaned the bathroom.

Sat Aug 10, 2024

Washed yesterday's dishes from when Patrick prepared a vegetable broth. Cleaned in the kitchen. Sam and Patrick arrived after martial arts practice and grocery shopping. Sam came in to chat with me about technology and cars, and I invited him to stay for lunch. Sam ate leftover falafel in pita. Patrick ate a salad with avocado. Archived photos from my iPhone 12 mini and uploaded them to Flickr. Lunch: I prepared for myself leftover falafel, feta, and lettuce in pita; limeade. Patrick left early to visit his mom before we met at The Valencia Room for a dance party called Glam which we learned about from Suzan. The entrance was confusingly not on the corner but at an unmarked, open door a few yards away. No one was at the door so we decided to walk around a bit before entering. We encounted Simon and Arthur, meeting Arthur for the first time. They continued to The Valencia Room. A minute or two later Patrick and I encountered Timmy D and Dan B and chatted briefly. Patrick and I returned to The Valencia Room. At Glam we met or encountered Nick, DJ Hawthorne, host Avery Daniels, Suzan, Tim, Jenny, Simon, Arthur. Patrick unexpectedly encountered his hair stylist Stefano. We danced and drank for several hours. Later we said our goodbyes. Patrick and I dined on tapas at Esperpento: we shared a glass of happy hour sangria, jamon iberico, butifara judia blanca, esparragos a la plancha, y gambas a la plancha. All food and drink were delicious. Service was a tad slow; only one server and one busser for a large, mostly full dining room. We had time to kill before our Muni bus arrived, so we shared a medium cup of gelato from Hila with two flavors: pistachio and chocolate hazelnut. To bed almost immediately.

Mon Aug 12, 2024

Dinner at home with Patrick: Italian tuna and bean salad, hot water, verdelho. We watched Reservation Dogs s3:e7 on Hulu then If Anything Happens I Love You on Netflix then Matt Rife: Lucid: A Crowdwork Special on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. Continued listening to Colin Jost read the Colin Jost's audiobook A Very Punchable Face after recently getting it working via the iOS app called Libby which made it much easier than with the SFPL website. I had originally planned to read the ebook, but I accidentally downloaded the audiobook instead, and I'm glad I did. The book is very funny, and hearing him read it is probably a lot better than reading the ebook. Late snack: one turkey corn dog from frozen. Caught up on journaling.

Wed Aug 14, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Suzan's laptop was not working, so I helped her resolve the problem. It seemed it was out of juice? All it seemed it needed was a little bit of charge. Some of the workstations we previously used no longer had equipment set up for us to use like displays and power adapters, so I spent about an hour and a half resolving that. We set Suzan up in the workspace previously used by Nour M. I reattached a display to its arm, did a full adjustment, and Suzan successfully plugged into the Dell USB-C docking station then I helped her configure her displays. Rode rideshare with the Dean's Office Administration team to the Ferry Building Marketplace for a staff appreciation food tour via Michaela with Edible Excursions via Cozymeal. We started with Señor Sisig ube macapuno churro bites. Next we visited Peaches Patties for curry chicken patties. Erika received a veggie stew. I received plantains not spicy. Sorrel-hibiscus-ginger juice for all. Next we visited Epicurean Trader where we ate Acme pain d'epi with Wagon Wheel cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and some kind of brie (I recall hearing American, Utah, and Camembert-style) and two kinds of Dandelion chocolate. Next we tasted one apricot macaron each at Miette. Next we visited Reem's Pali Cali Wrap (flatbread with sumac-braised chicken, caramelized onion sauce, arugula, pickled red onions, halal) and shot of mint lemonade. Last was deep-fried fish tacos and strawberry agua fresca at Cholita Linda. All food and drink were delicious, and we enjoyed hearing backgrounds of the building and of all the chefs and restaurants. The tour took about two hours. Rode rideshare back to work. Organized shared Sharepoint/Teams files in Finder. Walked and rode Muni home. I skipped dinner since I could not eat after today's food tour. Patrick had leftover carrot-ginger soup with half pita and a glass of verdelho. We watched Reservation Dogs s3:e8 on Hulu then The Simpsons s33:e5 on Disney+ then rewatched Comedy Central Presents: Bo Burnham (s13:e22). Patrick went to bed. Afterwards we walked to Detour for drinks then on a whim decided to stay for trivia night, our first time. We did poorly and ended up not exactly following instructions because they arrived after we began. We ordered furikake popcorn and a second round of drinks. We met neighboring team Alex and Mitch and chatted briefly throughout the game. They left after round one, and we left after round two. Walked and rode Muni home. To bed.

Sat Aug 17, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced half peach; hot water. Spent most of today packing for a trip. Lunch: I had leftover chow mein with vegetables. Patrick arrived home after practice with Sam and grocery shopping, then had a salad with avocado and cherry tomatoes. Later I had a snack: TJ's bambino pepperoni pizza, hot water. Later Phil, Drew, and Tai picked us up and we drove to Quyen and Dave's for a birthday party for Nate. When we left, the weather was about 55 degrees, overcast, and with a heavy mist. When we arrived in Sunnyvale the weather was about 72 degrees, sunny, and clear. In attendance: Nate, Chris, Quyen, Dave, Patrick, me, Jen C, Richard, Michael, Jonathan, Paul, Drew, Phil, Mark, Shawn (or Sean?), Quan, and one more whose name I didn't get. We ate delicious food from Greek Spot: lamb skewers, chicken skewers, beef patties, salad, dolma, spicy falafel, gyro, pita. Two cakes followed: one was a chocolate with chocolate chip bundt with cream cheese frosting from Nothing Bundt Cakes via Jen. We had raisin bran with milk, oatmeal with granola and dried cranberries, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, toast, waffles, coffee, orange juice. Afterwards we returned to the room, packed, and checked out from the app on Patrick's phone. We enjoyed our stay. Our room 530 at Hampton Inn Sunnyvale overlooked Golfland mini golf and arcade, which was charming despite the additional view of the arcade's large roof covered in duct work. Everything about this Hampton Inn seemed new. Many hotel features were unusually well thought out, including obvious light switches, soft-open and soft-close drawers and doors and toilet lids, well-placed power sockets, night lights, door lock, and more. Patrick liked the layout of the room including the desk area which he thought was good for writing. We rode Uber to Murphy Street and walked around before stopping at Philz Coffee: mocha For Patrick, coffee rosé for me. We boarded Caltrain #229 in Sunnyvale at 10:28 and rode to 22nd Street Station in San Francisco. While waiting in Sunnyvale a gaggle of geese flying and squawking overhead surprised and delighted us. The train was new and electric and very smooth compared to the old train. The trip took about 70 minutes. After alighting at 22nd Street we saw a flattened rat in the street. We waited 15 minutes. We rode Muni bus 48 to Muni J train to 16th Street then walked to Kerry and Mom Ryan's. We visited with them for about an hour. Dessert: we shared a Pineapple King custard pineapple bun which was delicious but didn't taste anything like pineapple. We watched Warrior s3:e5 on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I recently had tried Sidebery but couldn't figure out how to rename a group, so I uninstalled Sidebery. Tab Stash makes that very easy. Late snack: seedful grapes. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted shaved coconut, sliced and toasted almonds, diced whole nectarine; hot water. Attempted to perform a financial operation; failed. Did more accounts hardening. Attempted to take apart an OXO pepper grinder aka pepper mill for cleaning. The only YouTube video I could find for this was "OXO salt and pepper grinder, disassembly & deep clean" by Newton Pens, but the video is backwards. The disassembly is discussed primarily in the last 70 seconds of a 15-minute video, and there is no video of the disassembly—only photos with voiceover instructions. I removed the three screws inside but failed to proceed further because I couldn't pry the bottom off, even with one small and one larger screwdriver. I felt at several moments that I might injure myself while doing so. We decided to abandon this pepper grinder and buy a new, different device. I shopped for a new pepper grinder. The OXO was purchased in 2011, so it has lasted a really long time. It's not broken, but if it can't be cleaned, we will likely part with it. Lunch: one corndog with french fries, all from frozen; hot water. Nap. Walked to dinner at Mini Potstickers (415-742-4681, 2045 Irving St): mini pan fried pork bun ($12.99), braised beef noodles (soup, $14.99), and wagyu dumplings (12 for $10.99); hot tea and water. All food and drink were delicious. My favorite was the braised beef noodles: perfectly tender bite-size beef chunks, noodles with just the right pressure to the bite, flavorful broth not too salty. There is a bit of red coloring in the soup that makes it seem spicy, but it is not spicy at all. Patrick liked all the dishes equally. Service was good. $42.33 after tax and tip. We walked and shopped in the area afterwards but bought nothing. Rode UberX home. We watched Warrior s3:e6 on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I cleaned the OXO pepper grinder more, this time around the band that enables you to select the fineness of the grind. I found that forcefully pulling the top part apart from the clear hard plastic barrel and then rotating it a few degrees then releasing holds it in a position slightly apart, and in this position more gunk can be removed with dish soap and warm water. I made another unexpected breakthrough after remembering an old physics trick I have used before. I microwaved about 3 ounces of water in a glass for 30 seconds then stood the pepper mill in the hot water. The rubbery bottom part I was trying to remove expanded at a faster rate than the hard clear plastic it was attached to, and it was then not too difficult or risky to remove it using the handle end of a Le Creuset 1 tsp stainless steel measuring spoon which is wider than a screwdriver, so it might provide a tad more leverage, and shorter in length, which might provide more control than a longer screwdriver. I removed more gunk from the newly exposed areas with dish soap and warm water. I achieved another breakthrough in that the stainless steel cuff at the top of the hard clear plastic barrel came loose with pulling even though the entire assembly did not come apart. I then was able to squeeze a stiff toothbrush with dish soap and water under the edge of the cuff to remove more gunk. I decided that it was probably impossible to deconstruct the pepper mill completely. There is water under the cuff, but I'll let it dry overnight sitting on top of our Blue Air 411 air purifier. It's possible that the cuff's tightness might prevent the water from evaporating. We'll see in the morning. Updates for home devices, including Docker 4.32.0 to 4.33.0. Organized and weeded archived emails. Late snack: a banana.
