Fri Nov 6, 2015

Helped Rebecca B with reorganizing a data table. Helped Megan with a question about the grads placement page. Spent most of today installing cable management for Cindy and troubleshooting startup problems with a student's Asus ZenBook. Spent time on the phone with Asus. I was amazed that I got through to a support engineer with no waiting. Listserv management. I was also surprised that the engineer was in Jamaica. They cannot resolve it over the phone, so we need to send it in. I confirmed actions with the student and then took it to FedEx at Market and Duboce. Lunch today was 25% of yesterday's burrito. Bought a limeade and carrot juice at Whole Foods. Rode Muni home. Submitted a ticket to ITS for Valerie C. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover grilled salmon with angel hair pasta with vegetables. Sat Nov 7, 2015
Breakfast at home with Patrick: pancakes and coffee with soy milk. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 8, pass 2. Rode my bike to Stern Grove and then to SFSU where I happened upon and watched for a while Grapple in the Plaza—a free, outdoor men's wrestling match against Cal Poly SLO. This was the first time they held a match outdoors. It was perfect. You could sit in the sun or the shade as you liked. After I watched for a bit I left and realized my rear tire was going flat, so I walked it to Ocean Cyclery for a new tube while I got a mushroom and sausage slice at Sophia's Pizzeria. When I returned I learned they didn't have the correct tube like they had thought, so I decided to leave the bike there for a tune-up while they ordered the part—it will take about a week. Before eating at Sophia's Pizzeria, I tried to eat at Pho Ha Tien, but after being seated and being given a menu, no server returned for 10 minutes so I left. At Sophia's the restroom was out of order, and my pizza slice took a really long time—maybe 15 or 20 minutes. The crust was dry and crispy underneath. The sausage was particularly good. The sauce was missing something, however. Or maybe there wasn't enough sauce. It tastes okay, and I like the crust, but there are better pizzas available in the area. Rode Lyft Line home: $9.74 after a $1 tip. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 8, pass 2.
Sun Nov 8, 2015
Breakfast at home with Patrick: italian herbs eggs and vegetables skillet with fresh mozzarella, hash browns, Philz Tesora, orange juice for Patrick, carrot juice for me. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 8, pass 2. I am embarrassed to say that I did this search on Google today: why do so many reviewers on amazon insist on products not made in china. I didn't find the answer I had sought, which was beyond the obvious answer involving safety (e.g., lead) or quality issues. Web work for Recharge Spa: add faqs for Botox and Xeomin in draft and sent them to Phil and Drew for review. Dinner at home with Patrick: ground chicken soft tacos. Finished watching Wisecrack (2005) on Netflix DVD with Patrick (Vickie Shaw and Doug Holsclaw). Cut my hair, showered.

Updated the IT students page with new student portal privacy screen screenshots, sent suggestions and issues to Lisa D and Doug C. Chatted with Cindy about SofTest issue followup. Rode UberX from UCSF Laurel Heights to the Mission. Dinner and mini golf at Urban Putt with Patrick, Drew, Paul, Karl, Danny, Romy, Richard, Mike, Phil. Paul got me a birthday card with a golf design—very appropriate! We had a lot of fun, and I was amazed at the creativity and attention to detail in the course design. I liked the food a lot, in particular the potato fries, and others' reactions were good to excellent. Patrick and I shared an iceberg wedge salad (with blue cheese and bacon) and the chicken hero (prosciutto, red onion jam, heirloom tomato, smoked mozzarella, jalapeño aioli on a french roll with sweet potato fries). The $11 cocktail I had—Summer Crush—seemed to consist of two ounces of alcohol and the rest of the glass filled with ice. I finished it in about one minute. That's when I said no more cocktails for me at this place. I switched to the house fireball for $4 and that seemed a better value. Drew left early and returned with Phil fresh from the airport. Karl left early. Patrick left early. Rode Lyft Line home.

Reviewed some accounts that might need to close and identified one that was unused and submitted a request to ITS to close it. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Posted a job posting on BTS for Peter L. Microsites work: followup on SMDC stall. Missed connecting with Lawrence L who has a new domain ready for CERSI. Calendar management. Spent a lot of time successfully removing the Chrome extension (plug-in) called Webpage Screenshot (id = ckibcdccnfeookdmbahgiakhnjcddpki) from my Time Machine backups because it included spyware (Adware.Jolleywallet). To do so I had to: (1) take a photo of the path to the extension, (2) in Terminal execute chflags nohidden ~/Library/ so that my Library folder was viewable after entering Time Machine, (3) enter Time Machine, (4) navigate to the parent folder of the ckibcdccnfeookdmbahgiakhnjcddpki folder, (5) right-click the ckibcdccnfeookdmbahgiakhnjcddpki folder, (6) select the item that said something like Delete All Occurrences. There were some suggestions that restarting Finder would permit you to delete the folder directly, but it’s less safe that way, and in my case it did not work due to error “The operation can’t be completed because backup items can’t be modified.” Ran a full scan afterwards. Continued setting up my Lanyrd account, tracking Jon J and Nica L and adding conferences I have attended. Sent Paula a social media conference suggestion. Installed Snapchat, Yik Yak, and Periscope on my iPhone 6 Plus. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from SpoonRocket, which had given me a $10 credit in appreciation for my loyalty: korean mixed plate ($9.50) for me. Chicken tikka masala with aloo gobi masala and pulao style rice ($8.95) for Patrick. Dessert: we shared a pumpkin cheesecake ($3.95). Delivery this time took about 45 minutes—disappointing.

Breakfast at home: egg and cheddar on english muffin, 8 ounces of carrot juice. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Got coffee at The View Cafe with and chatted with John K about various things including the imminent release of Drupal 8 tomorrow. At Tableau Day organized by Kurt G a large roomful of people and I were introduced to Tableau, which is software that is a data visualization presentation layer atop your existing databases or data sources. The software seems impressively easy to use and from a software perspective seems obvious that a lot of excellent development went into it. Followup with students about how student organization websites should be presented (with or without University branding). Jazzee issue follow with Rick and Joel. Encryption and SofTest followup. Minor web edits for Megan and Cindy: placement survey results. Ordered a printer part for Lisa. Investigated a feature request from Lisa about the job postings form. Microsites followup: calpoison. No lunch, but I did get a midafternoon snack of Hawaiian potato chips. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Unclogged an outdoor drain. Dinner at home with Patrick: pepperoni and green bell pepper pizza he made using premade dough, red wine. Selected replacement reading glasses. Of the ones I had ordered from Peepers, one—Andiamo Tan Plaid—sat so close to my eyes that my eyelashes struck them which tickled my eyes every time I blinked so I could not keep them. I couldn't push them further down my nose because they were half-height and the lenses were already barely within my field of vision when pushed all the way to the top of my nose. The other—Golden Torsoise Spg Hge—was also half-height and had similar problems with field of vision though they did not tickle my eyelashes or eyes. I chose replacements that have nose pads and that are full-height so I hope in theory that they will sit further away from my face and not pose problems with field of vision. Answered a question for James about remote communications with students.
Thu Nov 19, 2015

There were several parties to which I was invited tonight, but I was too energy-drained from today's doctor visits to attend any of them. Drupal 8.0.0 was released today. Pulled my iPad off the bookshelf. I haven't used it since June.

Met with OEIS, James J, and Celeste N to discuss next steps with Tableau and Qlik. Computer maintenance in the OSACA. Thu Nov 26, 2015
Breakfast: granola with milk. Cleaned and prepped for Thanksgiving feast. Lunch: pastrami and cheddar on sourdough. Shower and nap. Upon awakening, I found that Patrick had the 2015 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on, streaming well seemingly in HD over the web from NBC Live, which I enjoyed watching for a while. Thanksgiving feast with Patrick, Mom Ryan, Kerry, Tony D, and Sam, one leaf in the Pranzo II was sufficient for 6 persons. We bought a HoneyBaked ham, and Patrick prepared everything else: cardamom-spiced cranberry chutney, stuffed merlitons with shrimp, southern sweet potato casserole, green chard and cannellini beans, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls, blueberry jam and custard pie, and creole bread pudding with bourbon sauce. Recharge Spa work: promo business card followup.
Fri Nov 27, 2015
Breakfast: pastrami and cheddar on sourdough, cafe du monde coffee and chicory via french press with sucanet and milk. Recharge Spa work: December newsletter, video introduction. Waxed the Pranzo II with all three leaves in place. Lunch and dinner were both Thanksgiving leftovers. After dinner Patrick and I watched some clips on YouTube. Encountered the following error message in iMovie 10 when attempting to upload a movie to YouTube: "Please copy this code, switch to your application and paste it there:" but there is seemingly no place to paste the code. I successfully used the workaround posted at Oct 20, 2015 1:09 AM by crypticbag on Apple Support Communities: "Right click on the profile you want to use (before you get this new window in Safari) and click on 'Open Link'." When using this workaround there is no need to copy and paste a code. The YouTube upload failed with an error of some kind and I didn't feel like troubleshooting it. I exported it at the highest quality which generated a .MOV file but when I tried uploading it to YouTube I realized it was 2 GB which I knew was too large and so I canceled the upload. I then exported it at High (instead of ProRes, whatever that means) and that generated a 290 MB file which uploaded to YouTube successfully. Late meal: chicken and rotelle noodle soup from a can.
Sat Nov 28, 2015
Brunch at home: leftover ham, two eggs over easy, hash browns, 8 ounces of carrot juice, 8 ounces of prune juice mixed with water. Read the internet. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 9, pass 2; chapter 10, pass 1. Snack with Patrick: french fries baked in the oven. House chores. Dinner at home with Patrick: toasted cheddar and leftover ham sandwich, split pea soup, merlot. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 9, pass 3; chapter 10, pass 2. Snack: popcorn. Unwrapped and set up my Peak Design The Everyday Messenger and The Field Pouch in charcoal. The packaging was a delightful surprise: my charcoal messenger bag arrived in a heavy, multilayered paper bag that resembled a charcoal bag. Opening the bag was easy—just pull the red OPEN tab. Inside was just the messenger bag; no extra inner plastic bag—nice. The messenger bag looks and feels better than I had expected. The quality of the materials, the construction, the design, the colors—everything is top-notch. It took me a while to empty my current bag (Lowepro Passport Sling II in green/mica) and figure out what should be stored where in the new bag because it has lots of pockets and places for stuff so there are lots of choices. I briefly tried my Capture Pro camera clip on The Field Pouch before moving it to The Everyday Messenger. This mounting position works beautifully, and this should make changing lenses easier and safer. The Everyday Messenger is larger than my current bag, but I knew this when I bought it. I'm only 5' 5" tall, and this bag looks and feels huge on me when I carry it; Patrick said, "It's almost bigger than you," echoing my thoughts. It's also more weight than I'm used to, so I looked for things that I had been carrying that I probably don't need and put a bunch of those items in a drawer. I'm not sorry I backed the Kickstarter for The Everyday Messenger, but if I could have a bag that's 50% to 60% the size of The Everyday Messenger, perhaps in backpack form (so that not all the weight is on one shoulder which is bad for backs), I would probably like that much better. For now, I'll try the new bag for a week and see how it goes. Their Kickstarter summary: Open = July 22, 2015. I backed it on July 25. Close = September 20, 2015. Successfully raised $4,869,472 USD with 17,029 backers. I received my product on November 25, 2015 (two months and five days following close).
