Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Published an event for Carolina L. Responded to a logo request from Leslie C. Followup with Arezou R about broken links and misspelled words on the CCB website. Project work: entrepreneurship, strategic plan. Met briefly with Eric about projects. Lunch: I prepared for myself a hot dish using leftover plain, cooked orzo with diced celery, diced red onion, halved cherry tomatoes, and caesar vinaigrette dressing. Water to drink. Midafternoon snack: leftover Il Casaro calamari with romesco, water. Corrected the newly posted event for Carolina L. Added Nicole F to the school's honors and awards page. Patrick prepared ham and beans for a later meal. Dinner at home with Patrick: I prepared Beyond burgers from frozen with tomato, mixed greens, sliced muenster, and other fixins. Water to drink. I also had a glass of white wine. We watched American Born Chinese s1:e1 on Disney+ then more of Anjelah Johnson-Reyes: Say I Won't - Full Special on YouTube. I did some walking in place while watching. I tried to play YouTube in Safari with Adblock from my iPad Air but the display worked and we couldn't hear the audio on our headphones plugged in to a 3.5 mm to USB-C adapter so we just watched on the Apple TV YouTube app which sadly included ads. Patrick went to bed.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Lunch: turkey, pesto, and white cheddar on baguette from Boulangerie Cole Valley. Errand: Walgreens. Built, tested, and delivered html email: Happy Pride Month. Rode Muni to a mano in Hayes Valley to meet Patrick for dinner. Drinks: aperol spritz for Patrick, spezziatta for me. The spezziatta seemed to have some kind of chili oil float atop, which I hadn't noticed in the ingredients list, so we switched drinks. Later I learned that spezziatta in Italian means spicy. Focaccia with oil and olive tapenade; spinach campanelle, asparagus, spring onions, peas, fava leaves, lemon, ricotta. This was the perfect amount of food to split between two people who wanted to eat lightly. We walked to the SF LGBT Center for one in a live concert series called Queer Vibes. Performing tonight: Charlos, MelaniDiane, and S.I.A.T. (Stuck In A Tree). We arrived at 6:00 p.m. when our tickets and the event info said the performance would start. When we attempted to enter The Center, the door was locked. A security guard let us in, and we proceeded upstairs. We checked in and were pleasantly surprised to find complimentary beverages and pizza. We were full, but Patrick ate some packaged cookies. Over the next 20 minutes or so we overheard that the performance really wouldn't start until 7:30, so we left, saying as we exited, that we would return. Moments after leaving the building we decided that we didn't feel like we belonged there, so we decided to not return. We walked to the Castro and walked the cross. We entered Lobby Bar for the first time and would have stopped for a drink, but there were no more pairs of seats left—only two singles in separate rooms. We didn't want to stand, so we left. We ended up at Twin Peaks, where Patrick had an Aperol spritz and I had a hot toddy. We were surprised to find that it was cash only. Luckily I had cash. Later we got snacks at Hot Johnnies, our first time. We waited for our order in the back patio under a heat lamp but moved inside after it was still too cold even with the lamp. The metal chairs made it particularly cold, even after I put my scarf as some protection from its heat-draining abilities. Waffle-cut fries with ketchup, house chips (which are waffle-cut potato chips), crispy fried wontons with sweet chili dipping sauce. The food was delicious, though the chips and wontons were a tad dark for my taste. I learned that Patrick will not dip potato chips into ketchup. While leaving we briefly encountered and said hello to Ray F before riding Uber Green home. To bed.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. In the afternoon I rode Muni to Festa Coloniale Italiana on Stockton Street between Union and Filbert. I spent a few hours there, enjoying the festival, dancing, and music. I ate a delicious $6 pepperoni square from Giovanni's, water to drink. I stopped at Walgreens and found an item I needed but there were 20 people in line with only two people working, so I put my item back and left. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: tiger eye beans with ham hock and rice, water. I washed dishes. We finished watching Anjelah Johnson-Reyes: Say I Won't - Full Special on YouTube. I had a glass of white wine. We also watched various YouTube videos including the terrific PRADA presents "CASTELLO CAVALCANTI" by Wes Anderson and Colin Jost Hosts the 2023 PEN America Literary Gala, in which the jokes were mostly very good but the audience oddly wasn't laughing much. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: leftovers from Hot Johnnie's, orange-vanilla sparkling water. Then, a bit later, a small bowl of cherries.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Installed updates for computers and other devices, including macOS Monterey 12.6.5 to 12.6.6 on my work laptop and iPadOS 16.5 on my iPad Air. After installing macOS Monterey 12.6.6 and restarting Hidden Bar failed to start automatically at login. In its settings I turned the switch for that off and on and off and on and then restarted and then it seemed to start automatically at login. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo. Lunch: I prepared for myself a hot dish using leftover plain, cooked orzo with diced celery, diced red onion, halved cherry tomatoes, and caesar vinaigrette dressing. Water to drink. Cherries. Updates and backups for home websites. Reinserted the bathroom sink stopper after it had fallen out during the clog clearing of May 29. My previous attempts to do this on my own were unsuccessful, and I think this is the first time I was successful. The thing I need to remember the next time this happens is not to unscrew where the rod attaches and to instead unscrew the fixture near the pivot point where it attaches to the main pipe. That rod can then be pulled out (back), the stopper inserted and threaded, then the fixture can be rescrewed to complete the fix. Began replaying The Room for iPadOS. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie burger on pretzel buns with a side of fries and chips, water. Afterwards we continued replaying The Room, and I had a glass of white wine. Patrick had Turkish delight and some ice cream. I washed dishes. We rewatched about half of Cloverfield (2008) which is available on Apple TV+ through June 30. Patrick went to bed. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo.

Finalized and completed the Deanna K Farewell Reception html email. Began work to swap the White Coat Ceremony pages. Followup with Angelie with a directory issue. Lunch by myself at El Rancho Grande: taco salad, chips, mild salsa, pico de gallo. I also had a guanábana (soursop) aqua fresca, which I don't think I have tasted before. It's delicious. The taco salad bowl is fried to order, so it's fresh and hot. Lots of listserv work, including requesting lots of new listservs. Uploaded commencement photos to The Archive. Rode Muni home. Door to door: 50 minutes. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover tiger eye beans with ham hock and rice, water. We watched a commercial about Apple Vision Pro then various YouTube videos including part of Sad Lemon with Erica Rhodes. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Late snack: cherries, water. Chatted with Lani and Dex over iMessage about Santa Cruz.

We talked about Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, moving homes and how to do it, friends and friendships, and more. Listserv setup and config. Surprise birthday celebration for SS, including cupcakes from a nearby cupcakery. I had red velvet, and it was moist and delicious. Redirected a web support request that was not for us. Rode Muni to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema where I met Patrick for dinner and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: popcorn with butter, unsweetened iced tea for Patrick, watermelon mezcal margarita with salt for me then later also without salt for Patrick, caesar salad add chicken. We both enjoyed the film very much. What a thrill! Service by Adan was great. Rode UberX home. Late snack: cherries, water.

Ran in place while watching English Grammar Boot Camp e17: Squirrels and Prepositions on Kanopy. I resumed watching this series after a long pause. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half peach; hot water. Worked from home. Followup with Siteimprove about confusion over shared policies. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy and redirect chain work. Followup with Rebecca D about archive pages. Lunch at home by myself: macaroni salad with olives and marinated peppers left over from a box lunch I brought home Monday and whose caprese sandwich Patrick ate part of yesterday. I also had a corn on the cob cooked in the microwave. Water to drink. While on lunch break I rewatched John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid. Populated listserv alias lists then began to use them but did not get far since UCSF IT doesn't seem to let us do it; we have to go through them. Afternoon snack: Patrick and I shared a red apple. More listserv alias config. Dinner at home with Patrick: Whole Foods Deli meatballs and spaghetti with tomato sauce, water, white wine. We split washing dishes. Dessert for me only: oatmeal raisin cookie from the aforementioned box lunch, heated. We continued watching Sad Lemon with Erica Rhodes, then SPIDERMAN ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE BREAKDOWN! Easter Eggs & Details You Missed! via New Rockstars, then Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion | Special | Disney+, all on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I did more Shortcuts programming in iOS on my iPhone 12 mini.

Ran in place while watching English Grammar Boot Camp e18: Stranded Prepositions on Kanopy. More listserv config. Lunch: I prepared for myself microwave corn on the cob and a large salad with celery, cucumber, imitation bacon bits, boiled egg, croutons, and ranch dressing. Water to drink. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. More listserv config. Grad alumni list update prep. In the evening I rode Muni to the Castro to meet Patrick for dinner. We briefly encountered Paul M at the Hi Tops parklet and stopped for a hug. Patrick and I dined on the back patio at Fable. It has been a long time since we dined here last. The garden seems a bit more charming than last time. We shared crab bunuelos and a double cheeseburger (add bacon) with kennebec fries. The three buneulos were rich—just a tad too rich for me, but I ate most of my share. The cheeseburger was tasty but messy to eat. The fries are about half an inch thick. Patrick drank an unsweetened iced tea in a pint glass. I had a glass of tempranillo. Service by Loredana was very good. Afterwards we got drinks at Last Rites. We shared a Loch Lomond (American, Irish and Scotch whiskies, toasted coconut, passionfruit, gardenia mix, sarsaparilla, allspice, cacao bitters) and a Canopy Collapse (charred pineapple infused rye, tequila, mezcal, creme de noyaux, amaro, sarsaparilla tincture, cacao bitters). Both were tasty, but I preferred the Loch Lomond. Patrick thought the Canopy Collapse tasted a little like root beer. We rode Uber Green home. Patrick went to bed. I performed a butcher block wax treatment then joined him in bed.

Afterwards we finished watching Cloverfield on Apple TV+ (limited time thru June 30) then Spider-Man Across the Spiderverse 50 MORE EASTER EGGS We Missed! via New Rockstars on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I watched a few more various YouTube videos then washed dishes.

Ran in place while browsing watching choices and listening to KQED Bay Curious podcasts: The Origins of the Bay Area's Donut and Chinese Food Combo and Why There’s a Cross on San Francisco’s Highest Peak. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced peach; hot water. Helped Patrick prepare for weekend writer events. Lunch: leftovers from last night, water. Cleaned the bathroom. Cut my hair, showered. Afternoon snack: cherries. Patrick and I left together on Muni. He went to a cocktail event related to tomorrow's reading at Executive Order. I went to the Castro then later Westfield San Francisco Centre where I had a peach lemonade from Charley's Cheesesteaks. I attempted to find the advertised rooftop terrace then was confounded by the terrible directions and lack of signage only later to find out from a security guard that the terrace was closed. We met for dinner at Montesacro Pinseria SoMa. I arrived early and had a glass of cremant de bourgogne at the bar. Sparkling water. Antipasti special: panzanella e bufala. Pinsa: pietralata. Patrick had a glass of lemoncocco. Rode Uber Green home.

Sun Jun 11, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; hot water. I accompanied Patrick to a Litquake panel of writers speaking about Craft and the Creative Life: How to Kill Your Darlings: The Art of Revision. We rode Muni to the Bookbinders Museum. I met Pat, Grant F, and Thomas. The talk was attended by about 20 persons and went well. Afterwards Patrick chatted with guests and others and signed copies of his book for sale. We walked and rode Muni to lunch specials at Red Jade: Patrick had sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice, I had cashew chicken with fried rice. Hot tea and ice water. Complimentary dessert: sesame ball and fortune cookie. My fortune: All progress occurs because people dare to be different. Patrick saved his fortune cookie for later. We walked to Kerry and Mom Ryan's and took photos in the garden because Mom just had her hair done and Patrick was dressed up for the writers panel. Patrick ran an errand then we got a drink at The Pilsner: aperol spritz for Patrick, margarita with salt for me. My phone battery was 15% and my hand warmer was nearly empty, so I turned my phone off because it had my Muni day pass on it. Rode Muni home, turning on my phone just to get past the pass checkpoint. Dinner: Rao's pepperoni pizza from frozen, water. Earlier today before Litquake Patrick and I had a traumatic encounter with a stranger who hounded us in an antagonizing manner for about a minute or two. It is now known as The Metreon Incident. If I choose to talk more about it later, I'll update this journal entry. It left us both quite unsettled and upset. No one was physically hurt. Also earlier today some family issues in Southern California arose involving an emergency room visit, and other family members nearby were on hand to provide assistance.

Responded to a request for feedback on a logo on a t-shirt for Leslie CS. Edited a news story for Eric for Leslie CF. Joachim L stopped by unexpectedly and used the waiting room as a workspace. Lunch: chicken tortilla soup from Carmelina's, ate at desk while starting to watch Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers episode 1 then after a few minutes I switched to Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, both via Kanopy via SFPL in Firefox. Candy or Medicine? project work. Rode Muni and walked to the Castro for dinner at Castro Indian Restaurant and Bar: happy hour cocktails: Avani Modi (tequila, mezcal, cilantro, thai chili, aperol, grapefruit soda) for Patrick, Rose Water (gin, rose, violette, cardamom, mint) for me. We shared samosas, veggie pakoras, boneless chicken biryani, onion naan. Water to drink. Patrick also had a sweet lassi. All food and drink were excellent. Service by Binod D was very good. On the bar I watched them use an amazing machine I had never seen before that dries wine glasses. Rode Muni home with leftovers. We watched various YouTube videos then half of Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact on Netflix. (I am going to stop saying Netflix instant watch from now on since I think the DVD service is ending on September 29, 2023, and we stopped using the DVD service a while ago.) Patrick went to bed.

Wed Jun 14, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Again troubleshot the Apple feature called Sidecar failing after not bothering for a long time because nothing seemed to fix it. Now Sidecar works for a only few seconds then freezes, so now the freezing occurs faster than I have ever seen before. Previously it would work for at least a few minutes. While testing, I happened to notice it freezing exactly when a break in my Time Out break timer application for macOS began a break. I have quit the app and now Sidecar seems to be working fine. I'll try this a whole day and see if it's the solution. Lunch at home, partly with Patrick: leftovers from Castro Indian, water. Continued replaying The Room on my iPad Air. Manually resolved duplicate subsets of OneDrive folders after discovering I had accumulated over the years four folders called Projects, each with slightly different contents. Turning off Time Out is not the complete solution. Sidecar still freezes without it, but with Time Out on it seems it happened within seconds. Edited an event posting for Carolina L. Dinner at home with Patrick: minestrone with warm ciabatta, water. Dessert: black cherry chip ice cream. Mine included a few dried cherries on top. Remediated PDF accessibility for a document for Patrick's website. Resolved a problem with Spotlight indexing on Patrick's computer—reset. We finished watching Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact on Netflix then we watched The Simpsons s33:e17 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Today was the first time I used my Volt Heat Lava Boots and the batteries ran out. I had used it on higher settings than I have in the past but then turned them to the lowest setting. Late snack: one Gardein chick'n slider from frozen. I prepared it with the microwave, and it was fast, simple, and tastier than I had expected. Water to drink. Installed app updates on our laptops. Confirmed Spotlight indexing is fixed for Patrick's laptop.

I washed more dishes.

Fri Jun 16, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. In the morning faculty member Bani T stopped by to see who else was in the office (no one), and I enjoyed chatting with him for about 10 minutes about a city outside of Sacramento and Suzanne L and more. Lunch from Panda Express: bowl with half chow mein and half mixed vegetables and orange chicken. Rode the UCSF shuttle to a health appointment and back. Along the way I encountered Betty-ann H on the sidewalk and we chatted for about 10 minutes about retirement, Mike L and others, health, and more. It was so great to see her. Later, back at Parnassus, an Acquia outage downed many UCSF websites including some of ours. I first noticed it at 2:37 p.m. I chatted with Lucia P about bagels, laundromats, key cabinets, The Metreon Incident, Apple Superdrives, web edits, mystery keys, office happenings, retirement plans, small towns near Sacramento and Puerto Vallarta, and more. Began editing White Coat Ceremony page changes for Julia S and Leslie CS. My fortune: You will soon receive support from an unexpected source. Rode Muni home. Web outage was resolved at 5:41 p.m. Dinner at home with Patrick: one-pan Mexican quinoa, water, red wine. We watched Shrinking s1:e1 on Apple TV+ (really good!) then Making Of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE - Best Of Behind The Scenes & Creating The Animations via STREAM WARS on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Sat Jun 17, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana, dried cherries; hot water. Sewing: repaired some small tears in a beige knit shirt. Housecleaning. Lunch with Patrick at Dumpling Kitchen: chinese fried dough, green onion pancake, shanghai-style steamed sticky rice shaomai, boiled pork and shrimp with celery dumplings, hot tea, water. We had ordered two other dumpling dishes, but somehow they didn't end up on our order, so we asked them to cancel them. We had gotten pretty full by then, anyway. All food and drink were delicious. Returned home with a few leftovers. Rode Muni to Castro Street station. Errands: Cliff's Variety for party supplies and other errands. I stopped at Maxfield's for a lemon-flavored sparkling water. We walked to Kerry and Mom Ryan's place and chatted with them for a while. I installed cord management for iPhone chargers. Afterwards we walked to dinner at Santeria: hibiscus agua fresca for Patrick, puffy tacos with chipotle chicken (handmade corn masa tortilla sculpted into a cheese-lined empanada that's lightly fried and then sliced open and filled with lettuce, cotija, light crema, chile de arbol sauce), ensalada fresca with shrimp (avocado, baby romaine, beets, cucumber, queso fresco, cilantro vinaigrette dressing). The puffy tacos were not too spicy for me, and they do seem like an item I do not usually see on menus in San Francisco. All food and drink were delicious. We rode Muni home. We watched various YouTube videos about John Mulaney then American Born Chinese s1:e2 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed.

Sun Jun 18, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana, dried cherries; hot water. Party prep all morning with Patrick. Patrick prepared all the dishes, and I washed many, many dishes, cleaned, and tidied. Small lunch with Patrick at home: leftovers from Dumpling Kitchen, water. Southern Sweet Sunday with Drew and Tai, Quyen and Dave, Conrad (whom I think I last saw at L.A. Drupalcon on May 14, 2015), Tony Q, Lori and Anne, and Julianne and Danae (whom I think we last saw in February 2010). We had invited 13 others who were unable to attend. After everyone left, we cleaned then relaxed. Dinner: Patrick had half bagel with cream cheese and leftover Mexican quinoa. I used leftovers from Perilla to build a noodle soup with broccoli, shrimp, and new noodles. Water to drink. Later we watched Shrinking s1:e2 on Apple TV+.

Mon Jun 19, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Sam came over for lunch: muffulettas, banana pudding, pineapple upside-down cake, water, peach sparkling water, pineapple sparkling water. Afterwards I helped him with some computer issues: see what's on these two compact discs, why do Safari Tab Groups behave this way? (Answer: I don't know. It seems broken. We tried migrating the tab groups to Firefox and Chrome, but neither seemed to import them correctly or at all.) Sam departed. Today we had planned to attend a showing of Jewelle: A Just Vision at the Castro Theatre and attend an afterparty at nearby The Sausage Factory, but we unexpectedly had to cancel our plans. Afternoon snack: half of a toasted poppyseed bagel with peanut butter. I napped. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Lazy Susan: small wonton soup, chinese chicken salad, orange chicken, brown rice. We played Myst III: Exile on my MacBook Pro. We tried Steam Link with a Playstation 5 controller, but the controller wouldn't control the game, so Steam Link wasn't very useful to us. We each used our AirPod Pros, but in order to make them work simultaneously I had to open Audio MIDI Setup and create a Multi-Output Device. It was easy enough for me to figure out in a few seconds, but only because I was familiar with it. I'm sure Mac users with no such experience would have a hard time with that. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Tue Jun 20, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Muni to Stonestown Galleria. I have an Apple Genius Bar appointment this morning, but I forgot that the mall doors wouldn't open right away. I got an americano with cream and a hash brown with ketchup at McDonald's and worked there for a few hours. The free wifi there is surprisingly good: 218 Mbps down and 43 Mbps up. My appointment was to see if they could troubleshoot and resolve my recent hot iPhone issues. Hardware diags revealed nothing out of the ordinary, so I agreed we would erase the phone, and I would install apps anew. Service was friendly and helpful throughout, as usual at all my Genius Bar appointments that I can recall. Afterwards I rode Muni to Church Street station for lunch at Red Jade: mixed vegetables with beef, steamed rice, complimentary sesame ball, complimentary fortune cookie, complimentary hot tea, water. Rode Muni bus 22 to UCSF Mission Bay. Just before 16th and Mission there was so much traffic it took us 10 minutes to travel one block. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. My fortune from Red Jade: Only those who dare truly live.

We watched Secret Invasion s1:e1 on Disney+. I walked in place while watching. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes and made ice. Late snack: fortune cookie, water. My fortune: As every thread of gold is valuable, so is every moment of time. So far, the iPhone erase seems to have resolved the too-hot battery drain problems. It was a lot of work, but I have reinstalled all apps and mostly configured everything to my liking again. Some apps I did not use very much did not get reinstalled. I discovered and resolved an access problem to one company's app and website. I have yet to rebuild all my Shortcuts automations. I looked to see what apps I had installed within the past month, and nothing seemed suspicious of causing the battery drain. So the cause remains a mystery, but at least it seems resolved. Butcher block wax treatment.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced peach; hot water. Lots of house chores and cleaning. Snack: microwaved corn on the cob, water. Cut my hair, showered. Lunch at home with Patrick: BLT with heirloom tomatoes on warm ciabatta and potato bread, water. (One sandwich was on ciabatta, and another was on potato bread, and we each ate half of each.) I washed dishes. I rode Muni to a Pink Saturday party at Tim C's with many from The Syndicate that I saw on Wednesday, and I met many others new to me, including Vince L, Pat (Patrick), Ryan, Kyle, Kevin, Jason, and more whose names I can't recall. Emery readded me to the Slack for The Syndicate. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: stir-fried sweet-and-sour shrimp and steamed rice, water. I helped prep food, and afterwards I washed dishes. We watched The Simpsons s33:e19 (Girls Just Shauna Have Fun) on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. Late small meal: I made a simple white cream sauce using a recipe found on the web and paired that with leftover unsauced spaghetti.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana, dried cherries; hot water. It was hard to figure out what to wear today because ordinarily Pride Sunday every year is warm and sunny but today it was clear that it would be cold and overcast with maybe some sun and scattered clouds followed in the afternoon by cold and overcast again. We chose to dress warmly even though our warm layers weren't very rainbowy or festive, and that turned out to be a good choice. Patrick and I rode Muni to Civic Center station and visited the Pride Festival. We got a philly cheesesteak sandwich from a generically named booth for $16 which was not very good. The cheese was nacho cheese sauce, slightly spicy. Part of the sandwich was cold. We had walked far away to sit on grass and therefore didn't complain. The sandwich was rather messy, partly because the meat was in little bits. We continued walking around visiting different areas. At one point while approaching the API stage I was holding my fingers in my ears because the music was too loud. Magically, someone (first aid crew? someone from a health services vendor?) appeared and offered me a wrapped package of earplugs. I smiled and gratefully accepted the gift and forgot to say thank you. Would they have heard me anyway? Patrick and I shared a can of Coca-Cola purchased earlier with the sandwich. At the porta-potty restrooms I tried using a sink, but there was no soap and no water. We saw someone in an inflatable gorilla suit. We happened to walk alongside Andrew Christian supporters for a bit. Before we arrived I checked the SF Pride website for bag guidelines and found that many items were prohibited. We got through the entrance and bag check pretty quickly enough with no issues, but later inside we saw and smelled many people with items that were on the prohibited list, including non-compliant purses, bags or backpacks; non-service-animal pets; umbrellas; hula hoops; and marijuana, so I suspect that the rules were not strictly enforced. We had had enough excitement and left. We did not watch the parade at all. We rode Muni to the Castro. We had a small meal at Thai Chef: fish cakes with sweet dipping sauce, bbq chicken with a different kind of sweet dipping sauce. We walked to Sisters Coffee Shop on Valencia where Patrick got an iced red velvet latte—delicious. Dinner and a movie at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: Asteroid City with two waters, one glass of red wine for me, one chocolate shake for Patrick, one popcorn no butter to share, one cordon bleu sandwich with fries and ketchup to share. We split our order into two parts, saving the sandwich for about 30 minutes in. There was a long delay waiting to place the first part of our order because while helping the seats next to us the (iPad?) device the server used to place orders was not functioning properly. Later there was a long delay in receiving our waters, so we raised a card and promptly got the waters. Later we submitted our order for the sandwich and again there was a long delay. We received the bill and all other items but not the sandwich. I raised a card and the server took away our bill. A long time passed, and we continued watching the film. Finally the sandwich arrived along with a revised bill which removed the sandwich. This was easily the worst service we have ever received at Alamo, but I still tipped $5 even if they might not have deserved it. We rode Muni home. Patrick went to bed. A fun and exhausting day.

Performed knee-friendly quad-strengthening exercises. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, diced half peach; hot water. Worked from home. Reformatted the Time Machine hard drive for my work computer after realizing that it was formatted as APFS and was taking a very long time to mount. In Disk Utility I tried to erase the volume but found only APFS choices in the picklist then found the solution posted by BreBo on tonymacx86 on May 14, 2018, paraphrasing: Select View > Show All Devices, then erase the parentmost object, which is partition rather than the container or volume. HEAL-Rx Video project work. Set up Time Machine anew: MacOS Extended (Journaled) and excluded many unnecessary folders with (old) help from "What Folders To Exclude From Time Machine Backup’s" on essentialapple.com. While it was preparing the first backup, I reopened Disk Utility and found that the disk was set to APFS even though I remember choosing MacOS Extended (Journaled). I then learned that Apple says that APFS or APFS Encrypted disks are the preferred format for a Time Machine backup disk. So now I am resigned to using APFS for Time Machine, and I didn't have to erase all my data and recreate it, but I believe it will at least help some with the slow mount times. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself fried rice with shrimp and vegetables. Water to drink. Continued HEAL-Rx Video project work. HTML email work for Eric: early release. Dinner at home with Patrick: kicked-up tuna melts with creamy tomato soup, water. We watched part of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. Updates for home devices.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted sliced almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Answered a person page question from Erika C. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Continued HEAL-Rx Video project work. Lunch: leftover shrimp fried rice. CPCS Candy or Medicine? project work: insertion begins. Rode Muni N and 49 to meet Patrick for dinner at Hoi An: we shared a mango salad and shaking beef with garlic noodles. The mango salad was mistakenly delivered to us spicy. When ordering, we had asked if it was spicy and was told either no or it could be made not spicy. (I'm now not sure which, but I think it was the former.) We reported the issue, and a non-spicy version was promptly delivered. Patrick had a Vietnamese coffee. I had a glass of red wine. All food and drink were delicious. Patrick preferred the spicy over the non-spicy mango salad, saying that the spiciness helped with the flavors. The beef melts in the mouth. We sat at a shaded table on the sidewalk with no heat lamp, and I, with my usual one hand warmer, was not too cold. Service was provided via opening and closing a window between visits. Patrick revealed that he had decided to walk Polk Street from his Muni ride arriving at Van Ness and Market, and I immediately said, "I'm so sorry," and I wasn't wrong. He described various unpleasantnesses including people openly using drugs. Afterwards we still had some time to kill, so we stopped for a drink at Bell Tower, a bar and restaurant that was quite busy. There was some delay in receiving service, but there were apologies when it arrived. Patrick had an IPA; I had another glass of red wine. We visited the opening of a showing of paintings by artist Matt Pipes at Hot Cookie. We learned about the event via Hot Cookie co-owner Ryan who is also a co-manager of the Kick Ass gay men's group on MeetUp. We met Raoul and Bala then the artist Matt then Tim, chatting briefly in turn with each, and enjoying free cookies including a newly tweaked raspberry recipe, before riding Uber Green home. We loved the gold backgrounds, ghosted images, and paint drips in Matt's work.
