Tue May 2, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work all day, including followup with Arezou R about misspellings and broken links on CCB. Various ticket followup with IT. Honors and awards updates on the web. Asana tasks following departures for Deborah G and Levi G. 1:1 with Eric. Lunch with Eric at SF Kebab. Eric had a chicken wrap with french fries and ketchup and water. I had a salmon kebab plate with hot mint tisane. My order took much longer than Eric's to arrive, and we're not sure if it was due to wrap vs. plate or chicken vs. fish or something else or nothing else. Food was delicious. Met with Wan-Yu L over Zoom to discuss Facebook message and comment moderation. Orgchart work for James: budget meeting. Followup with IT to downgrade from SEP 14.3 RU6 to RU3. Photo followup with Judie T. Began real work on the Candy or Medicine project for CPCS. Rode Muni home. It took 90 minutes, partly because they moved the stops and the terminal for bus 48. It's more than a block further than before, and these are long blocks in this part of town. I think I'll never ride this bus ever again since it's too much walking and waiting and no longer is worth it. Before these changes it was worth it to do a little bit of extra walking so that I wouldn't need to take three vehicles to get to work. It's so awful now. Dinner at home with Patrick: Beyond Burger burgers with fixins, water. No sides. We watched GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Recap: Everything You Need to Know Before Volume 3 via ScreenCrush on YouTube. I used the laptop again to avoid commercials with uBlock Origin in Firefox, and this time I believe I resolved the lag by not mirroring the screen. Patrick went to bed. Late beverage: 6 ounces of black cherry juice.

Wed May 3, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Worked from home. Lunch at home with Patrick: sandwiches from Jane the Bakery. Patrick had chicken schwarma. I had roast beef. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo, finishing the second story. Helped Nicole F with listserv config: remove Private from Send for some student lists. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from A Desi Cafe via DoorDash: assorted appetizer, chicken tikka kebab, mix vegetables, onion naan, raita, masala chai, large taj mahal (22oz), prawn biryani. All food and drink were delicious except the chicken was drier than we had expected. Several items were spicy but I was able to tolerate it. We watched John Mulaney's second SNL stand-up monologue on YouTube then Schmigadoon! (Schmicago) s2:e6 (season finale) on Apple TV+ then 10 Behind The Scenes Reasons For Star Trek Characters' Quirks via TrekCulture on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. Recharge Medical work: reorder home page items, remove some text from the USCIS page. Lots of Recharge dev website work after none for a long time: update Drupal from 9.5.3 to 9.5.9, remove Walnut Creek, remove LinkIt because it was causing problems I was unable to understand or resolve, remove some text from the USCIS page. Installed a rapid security update for my iPhone. It installed extremely quickly; I am surprised.

Wine with dinner: we each had a glass of buondonno sangiovese (toscana rosso 2019). Service by Zach E was excellent. We sat at table 13, which I liked because it was right next to the service window so I could watch others' food as it emerges.

Sat May 6, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo. Lunch: leftover tomato-based bucatini, water. In the afternoon Patrick and I rode Muni to Castro Street station. He walked to the Pilsner to meet Aaron for a few hours then visit his mom and Kerry. I barhopped. At Hi Tops I watched Mage win the Kentucky Derby. I also received a very nice compliment and was so taken by surprise since I don't receive such nice compliments often that I probably had forgotten to thank the giver and get his phone number. I chatted briefly with someone I saw pull out a gym bag from a locker. It seems that anyone with a lock can use an empty locker at Hi Tops to store things whilst in the bar. On the sidewalk someone dressed smartly in black and white and walking a dog asked me if I was at Billy Porter last night. Patrick and I met for dinner at Starbelly: cocktails: chumbo picante (mezcal, Opuntia prickly pear liqueur, grapefruit, calabrian chile oil, lime) for Patrick, passionflower (blanco tequila, passionfruit, citrus, hibiscus) for me. House-cut fries with three dips, house-made dungeness crab and burrata cappelletti with shaved grana and garlic brown butter (order of 3, +$5 for one more to make it even for two persons), Starbelly bacon pizza no jalapeños with arugula and green goddess dressing. Our server was Alex D. We rode Uber Green home.

Sun May 7, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Patrick and I rode Muni to lunch at The Bird on New Montgomery Street: spicy chicken sandwich and root beer for Patrick, chicken sandwich and sparkling water for me. Patrick particularly liked the apple slaw on the sandwich. He said it made them stand out. Afterwards we walked to SFMOMA where we got free admission as part of a MAX event. We arrived around 1:00 p.m. and visited floors 7, 6, 5, and 4 before stopping at the MAX private gathering. We were given a free drink ticket. The room was very darkly lit, and a DJ played loud music. The drink line was very long with seemingly only one bartender. The man in line ahead of us guessed that it would take at least 30 minutes to reach the front of the line, and I had to agree. He abandoned the event, and Patrick and I also did shortly afterwards. Patrick wanted ice cream, so we visited Ghirardhelli's. Patrick got a chocolate-dipped cone cup with chocolate ice cream and mint chocolate chip ice cream. I had a few bites. We rode Muni to the Castro and got $8 sangrias at Blush Wine Bar, sitting on the sidewalk and enjoying the warmish weather and the many passing dogs walking their humans. Dinner at Tanglad: thai iced tea and grilled pork rice vermicelli cold noodle with imperial rolls for Patrick, water and lemongrass beef with garlic noodles for me. All food and drink were delicious. Rode Muni home. Relaxed. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s5:e6 on Amazon Prime Video.

Followup with Alex S about creating a custom Qualtrics theme. Followup with CPCS team about the Pills vs Candy project aka the Candy or Medicine project. Updated digital letterhead for Stephanie H. Lunch at Street Tacos with Eric and Wan-Yu: taco salad and water for Wan-Yu, two tacos and horchata and water for Eric, shrimp taco and tilapia taco with lime wedges, side of rice, and water for me. The corn tortillas for the tacos are handmade, and they are delicious. We had an excellent chat with Wan-Yu talking about all kinds of things. Eric left a bit early to get to a meeting. Back at work, I tried to resolve a broken link issue with an Albertsons website and failed, wasting 30 minutes on the telephone. Followup with Michael D about the Oni-Orisan Lab website. Delivered the commencement program digital art for Documents and Media for Julia S and Leslie C and Lucia P. Rode Muni to Alamo Drafthouse Cinema where I met Patrick for dinner and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. Margarita for me, sweetened iced tea for Patrick. We shared popcorn and a chicken cordon bleu sandwich with fries and ketchup. I loved the film, and we particularly enjoyed seeing our friend Nico in it. Nico, you did a great job! Rode Uber Green home in a Tesla Model 3.

Wed May 10, 2023

Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Built the commencement program for the web, then implemented some styling adjustments to improve how it and other collapsed tables look on mobile. Lunch at home with Patrick: sandwich delivery from Lucca via DoorDash: meatball with provolone for Patrick, turkey and bacon with swiss on french roll for me. We shared potato salad. All food and drink were delicious. The potato salad is notably plain, with diced celery and onion and something red and without diced boiled egg and without black pepper. Patrick also had some Dr. Pepper. He also ordered a piece of baklava which we saved for later. CPCS Candy or Medicine work the rest of the afternoon. Weeded Twitter followings. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from New Eritrea via DoorDash: vegetarian combo, kilwa (beef), extra injera, extra teff injera, sambusa (ground beef). All food and drink were delicious. We probably did not need so many extra injeras. I made black cherry whiskey sours. We watched Ted Lasso s3:e9 on Apple TV+. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Continued working on CPCS since I didn't want to lose my train of thought. Late dessert: some Dr. Pepper. Created automation shortcuts on my iPhone 12 mini to warn me when my battery falls to 45% and to turn on low power mode when my battery falls to 35%. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo. Today I tested how long Volt Heat Lava Boots last on the lowest heat setting. Their claim is 14+ hours, and it met this and exceeded 15 hours. I finally noticed one battery was dead at 17 hours, and the other died not long after that. Pretty amazing! Late snack: potato salad, water.

We watched Moonlighting s5:e1 "Womb with a View" on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Butcher block wood butter treatment. Finished playing Rime (normal end). I enjoyed it, but there were a few puzzles that I couldn't figure out, so I relied on a walkthrough. Late snack: toasted sharp cheddar on sourdough, water.

Fri May 12, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. CPCS Candy or Medicine work the rest of the day. Rode Muni and walked to lunch at Kiki Japanese Restaurant: gyu don, hot green tea. Gyu don is thinly sliced beef with grilled onions and a little bit of soup over rice in a low bowl. It and the tea were both delicious. Walked and rode Muni back to work. More Candy or Medicine work. Rode Muni home. Encountered problems using our HomePod and HomePod mini: "Sorry, there was a problem with Apple Music." After Siri failed verbal requests to restart the devices, I was able to resolve it from the Home app on my iPhone 12 mini. It's unintuitive because in order to restart you have to select Reset. Walked to 9th and Judah then rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Martha Stewart's Emeril's kicked-up tuna melts with side of Whole Foods tomato parmesan soup, water. Cocktail for me only: aviation. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s5:e7 on Amazon Prime Video. I washed dishes at a break in the middle. Patrick went to bed. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo. To bed. Awoke around 1:00 a.m., arose around 2:00 a.m. Prepared one Gardein chick'n slider from frozen in the toaster oven, accidentally setting off a smoke alarm even though there was no smoke. Finished cooking it, then ate it. Patrick woke at his usual hour around the same time, so after eating I returned to bed.

Sat May 13, 2023

Slept in a bit. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Housecleaning: vacuuming. Lunch: leftover injera (which reheats reasonably well in the microwave) with leftover tomato parmesan soup. Water to drink. Cut my hair, showered. Later we walked to dinner at O'Brien's: cocktails: old fashioneds. We shared: fried chicken sandwich with side of mac and cheese and one of today's specials: New York strip roast with green beans and baked potato. Dessert: banoffee pie. Patrick would have preferred a slaw instead of lettuce and tomato on the chicken sandwich. The banoffee pie was a little hard to get the firm crust out of its dish. We didn't ask the price of the roast special, and we didn't realize until we got home that it was $42. Service by Katie C was excellent. Walked home. We watched Beef s1:e3 on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo.

Lunch at home with Patrick: leftover quinoa with carmelized corn and scallions for Patrick, leftover pappardelle with smokey pork sugo for me, water. Sun May 21, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Patrick and I rode Muni to Castro Street station. Pastries and coffee drinks at Poesia Cafe: pecan and caramel roll, vanilla and custard croissant, and another whose name we don't recall but it was a chocolate muffin topped with crunchy balls. The vanilla and custard croissant was the best of this bunch. This was our first time eating and drinking here. Afterwards we visited Patrick's mom while Kerry stepped out for a walk in the park. Next we drank aperol spritzes at The Pilsner Inn. The back patio was surprisingly clear, warm, and sunny, and Patrick sat in the shady part. Next we lunched at Los Amigos (2295 Market Street). It was our first time dining at this newish Salvadoran restaurant. Patrick had two kinds of pupusa with coffee and water. I had grilled shrimp with rice, beans, and one tortilla. We enjoyed the meal. No other restaurant in this area has the pleasure of these big windows through which to watch passersby, and we haven't eaten in this space in a very long time. On the way to Castro Street station we encountered a terrific busker (named Cedric?) playing electronic guitar. Rode Muni home, where it was overcast, cold, and very foggy. Later Patrick and I dined at home on leftovers. Patrick's: squid ink spaghetti with tuna, tomato, and capers sauce. Mine: I sauteed green onions and frozen vegetables and mixed that with leftover quinoa. Water to drink. Patrick washed dishes. We watched Beef s1:e5 on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. Mon May 22, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced dried mango, diced dried pineapple; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work, including reworking markup on Wells's Alumni page to resolve various accessibility issues. Rode Muni to Cole Vally to drop off dead batteries at the hardware store because for some unknown reason our garbage pickup always fails to pick them up. For lunch I got seated at Kamekyo but after having a few minutes with a menu to decide what I wanted and then waiting a few minutes I saw no wait staff inside the restaurant which was empty of customers except for one table inside and one table outside. I waited a few more minutes before abandoning it due to inattentiveness and poor efficiency. There seemed to be only one wait staffperson. Instead I walked across the street and got a rotisserie chicken sandwich without the spicy spread and plain water at Luke's Local, sitting in an adjacent parklet in the sun next to three people speaking French. I encountered one piece of tendon, but otherwise the sandwich was delicious. More Siteimprove work. CPCS Candy or Medicine work the remainder of the day. Upgraded from iOS 16.4.1 to 16.5 on my iPhone 12 mini. Various page changes for BI for Rebecca D. Walked from UCSF Parnassus to 9th and Judah. Rode Muni home. I washed dessert dishes. Patrick went to bed. I joined an hour later.

Completed BI page changes for Rebecca D. Published an event for Carolina L. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Lunch at Dumpling Time with Wan-Yu. She had beijing noodles. I had the asian green salad, which was huge and very filling. Water to drink. We talked about Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, John Mulaney, Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Beef, Netflix, commutes, Java, Javascript, and more. While we ate a large fly entered the dining area and bothered us quite persistently. I noticed that as I waved my hand near it it would not fly away, so while it was on the edge of my salad bowl I grabbed it with my napkin and crushed the napkin into a ball. Problem solved. (Sorry, PETA. Obama and I are in agreement on this.) CPCS Candy or Medicine work. Began a new project for Eric to list entrepreneurship data on our website. UCSF shuttle from Mission Bay to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Replaced Patrick's headphones ear pads with new ones. Dinner at home with Patrick: vegan coconut curry ramen with mushrooms, water. Spent most of the day working on the entrepreneurship project for Eric. We dined and had drinks at Hi Tops: intimidator (lost republic bourbon, bitters, agave, ginger beer, lemon) and fried chicken sandwich and fries for Patrick, baby bull (cazadores tequila, orange bitters, agave, lime) and grilled chicken sandwich and kale caesar salad for me. Afterwards we shopped for the first time at Bottle Bacchanal and bought some items. Rode UberX home.

Lunch at home with Patrick: I walked to Lou's for a sandwich and potato chips: Roma's Club on soft and sweet roll instead of dutch crunch and no jalapeno spread. Dinner at home with Patrick: tuna and white bean salad with warm bread, water, white wine. I washed dishes. We watched Beef s1:e8 on Netflix instant watch then Wanda Sykes: I'm an Entertainer on Netflix instant watch. I did some walking in place while watching. Patrick went to bed. I improved automation shortcuts on my iPhone 12 mini so that my low battery warnings would play custom sounds. Did more entrepreneurship project work after work hours because I didn't want to lose my train of thought. I ended up getting past a problem that stumped me for a while earlier today: to get items to align bottom inside containers that are the same height, set them in either a grid or flex display with align-items: stretch then within each item use a flex display with align-items: end. Butcher block wood butter treatment. Late snack: potato chips, water.

Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Project work and 1:1 with Eric: entrepreneurship, strategic plan. Early office closure due to Memorial holiday weekend. Walked and rode Muni to lunch at Perilla (415-564-9980, 836 Irving Street): five spice chicken with imperial rolls and garlic noodles and broccoli, thai iced tea. About $23 after tax and tip. I hadn't had the garlic noodles here in a very long time, and on this visit they seemed to be missing something. I felt like they could have been more flavorful. Maybe more garlic? Maybe a few drops of sesame oil? Maybe the water needed salt? Alternately, if you're looking for garlic noodles that aren't too garlicky or salty, these might be perfect for you. The chicken is perfectly moist inside and crisp outside. It had two small pieces of tendon or gristle. The dish comes with two pieces of crunchy broccoli—blanched? This is still my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the area. Rode Muni home. Sewing project: repaired my Abercrombie Adams Mountain jacket by hand (loose pocket) and machine (fray, overcasting). Patrick napped. Dinner at home with Patrick: pepperoni pizza from Fiorella via DoorDash, water. I was still full from my larger-than-usual lunch and could eat only one slice. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s5:e9 (season finale) on Amazon Prime Video. Patrick washed dishes then went to bed. At Patrick's request I duplicated an old home movie DVD of Patrick doing tai chi. I encountered some trouble with a disc stuck inside an Apple Superdrive. A lot of suggestions on the web did not work. The drive didn't mount or appear in Disk Utility, so there was nothing to select then right-click and choose Eject. My keyboard did not have an eject button. Command line drutil eject did nothing. I resolved it by restarting into recovery mode then ejecting it from Disk Utility.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, half diced peach; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Tried to resolve my problem of OneDrive not starting upon Mac restart even when the app is included in the login items in System Preferences Users & Groups. After a bad attempt in which I put "/usr/bin/open -gj /Applications/OneDrive.App/Contents/MacOS/OneDrive" in my .zshrc file (don't do this!), I found and edited ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.OneDrive.plist to change OpenAtLogin from 0 to 1 using the Property List Editor by opening the file in Xcode. I restarted, and OneDrive still failed to start automatically. I realized then I needed to force a reload of the plist because it is cached, so I ran defaults read ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.OneDrive.plist then restarted, and OneDrive still failed to start automatically. I started OneDrive manually then clicked the menu bar icon then clicked the gear icon to open the gear menu then selected Preferences. Open at Login was checked. I unchecked it then checked it then unchecked it then checked it, all while opening and closing ~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.OneDrive.plist to confirm that this checkbox was toggling the OpenAtLogin key (setting)—it was. I restarted, and that fixed the problem—no defaults read necessary. I quit OneDrive then restarted one more time to confirm the fix, and it still works! Late snack: a small bowl of cherries. These cherries are M&R Sweet Adelines, and they are tasty, but many of them have stems that are extremely difficult to remove, especially if the stem is very short.
