Sat Apr 1, 2023

Rode Muni to Union Square, met Angel and Claudia for breakfast at Sears Fine Food. Jonny is in town to attend a continuing education class, and they are sightseeing while he is here. They shared the 18 Swedish pancakes with lingonberries. I had Al's Special: 9 pancakes with corned beef hash, hash browns, and two eggs over easy. About $50 after tip. Among other things, we talked about theatre, kouign amann, daiso, mackinaw island, music camp, violins, cats and dogs, michigan, the beach, Santa Cruz, San Diego, social media, phones, anime and manga, totoro sweatshirts, endocrinology. Rode Muni home. Rested and more cold recovery. Patrick returned from his mini retreat to escape my presence at home due to cold symptoms. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; water. Rode Uber Green to R&G Lounge with Patrick to meet Bev, Celine, and Matt for dinner: bowl of bird's nest soup, salt and pepper crab, half peking duck, scallops with beef and macadamia nuts, braised e-fu noodles: about $250 before tip. Rode Uber Green home.

Sat Apr 8, 2023

Staycation day 1 of 9. Ran in place to various YouTube videos. I have been forgetting to mention this in the journal when it happens. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, diced half banana; hot water with squeeze of lemon. Cold recovery continues, now day 22. Midmorning snack: we shared pastries from Arizmendi: one chocolate sourdough croissant, lemon poppyseed muffin. Coffee and milk for me. Swept leaves, dirt, sand, and debris in the back yard. Shower. Nap. Midafternoon small meal: I prepared for myself a medium salad with iceberg lettuce, two kinds of microgreens, diced pepperoni, diced colby jack cubes, ranch dressing. Water with squeeze of lemon. After the meal I had hot water with squeeze of lemon for continued cold recovery. Dinner at home with Patrick: Martha Stewart's cotija, corn, and mango tacos to which Patrick added shrimp. Sparkling water for Patrick, water with squeeze of lemon for me. We each washed some dishes. The Logitech Z906 speaker system that I purchased in January 2013 starting exhibiting popping noises and the sound would disappear or almost disappear. I tried a cold restart and I tried a reset while off by holding the Input button for eight seconds and I tried switching the digital cable to the unused digital cable port, but none of these things resolved it. Time to get rid of it. We watched various YouTube videos including the remainder of Just For Laughs New Faces: Characters. I walked in place during part of watching. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Late small meal: half of an Arizmendi bran muffin, heated; greek yogurt with sliced strawberries; water with squeeze of lemon.

Sun Apr 9, 2023

We had planned to visit Kerry and Mom Ryan today, but we changed our plans. Lunch: I made for myself: large salad with iceberg lettuce, raddichio, mushrooms, imitation bacon bits, sliced and toasted almonds, microgreens, ranch dressing, cotija. To drink: a few ounces of ramen broth. Afterwards: hot water with squeeze of lime. Sat outside in the sun with a hat and continued reading Brené Brown's Atlas of the Heart (dead tree edition). Dinner at home with Patrick: shakshuka with warm sourdough bread, water. We watched various YouTube videos and Schmigadoon! s2:e1 (Schmicago) on Apple TV+.

Mon Apr 10, 2023

Staycation day 3 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, diced half banana; hot water with squeeze of lime. Cold is essentially done. Sam came over for lunch: sandwiches from Jane the Bakery. Sam had prosciutto burrata. Patrick had a muffaletta. I had turkey with carmelized onion. We also shared plantain chips and sweet potato chips from the grocery. For dessert we sang a song for Patrick over a single cardamom bun instead of cake, then shared it. Patrick opened musical instrument gifts from Sam: percussion fruit, slide flutes, recorders. Sam departed. I installed iOS 16.4.1 for our phones and iPad Air while Patrick napped. Later we rode Muni to Kerry and Mom Ryan's. Patrick recently finished revisions on his new book Fancy Gumbo. He dropped off one of the short stories for Mom to read. They gave us cards for Patrick. We walked to and through Clarion Alley then to Casements Bar where we had cocktails in the back patio: Cara Merchant (West Cork Peat Charred, toasted coconut, cochi di turino, averna) for Patrick, Splash Hit (vodka, creme de noyaux, guava syrup, honey, lime, prosecco) for me. A man next to us setting up a projector caused a minor alarm when he pulled a thick power cord over the top of a functioning heat lamp and it briefly made contact. Afterwards we walked to dinner at table 51 at Delfina (415-552-4094, 3621 18th Street) with service by Tyler C: one stellare spritz each, sparkling water. Antipasti: we shared Zuckerman asparagus (prosecco zabaglione, pecorino, pane strappato). Primi: agnolotti dal plin (orange gremolata). Secondi: liberty duck breast (delfina sauerkraut, kumquat mostarda, brown butter polenta). With the duck we each had a glass of Piaggia Il Sasso Carmignano red wine. Dolci: we shared one tiramisu. Patrick also had a single cup of french press coffee. All food and drink were delicious. Service was mostly excellent except the kitchen timing was off enough for our server to apologize for delays without us mentioning it, and they comped the dessert. Total after tax and before a 20% tip was about $206. We rode UberX home.

Tue Apr 11, 2023

Staycation day 4 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, diced half banana; hot water with squeeze of lime. Lunch: leftover linguine alfredo with lemon and asparagus, hot water with squeeze of lime. I rode Muni to Golden Gate Park and visited the Japanese Tea Garden and the Botanical Garden. I rode Muni to Apple Store Union Square to pick up a HomePod and a HomePod mini. I rode Muni to dinner at Saiwaii Ramen (2240 Irving St): pork ramen with egg for Patrick, ten don for me. We shared a large beer. Food, drink, and service were all excellent. We rode UberX home. I set up the speakers, and we played with them for a few minutes before Patrick went to bed. I had activated our 6-month free trial of Apple Music on the wrong account, so I successfully worked with Apple Support via web chat to resolve that.

Wed Apr 12, 2023

Staycation day 5 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, diced half banana; hot water. More HomePod setup. I had to remove My Home and reconfigure it with Patrick as the owner in order for us to get it to work the way we want. We had had plans today to attend a concert, but they changed at the last minute. Later we rode Uber Green to Clement Street for lunch at Mamahuhu followed by some shopping. Patrick had West Lake beef soup, a spicy chicken sandwich, a jasmine tea soda, and water. I had a sweet and sour chicken plate with egg roll and dipping sauce and water. This restaurant is one of our favorites in the neighborhood because it provides delightful design choices and friendly service at seemingly every turn. Afterwards we shopped at Kamei for new pint glasses, then we took passport photo portraits for Patrick at a blank exterior wall. We continued shopping and window shopping, enjoying stores new to us such as Olive and the two-week-old Pasta Supply Co., then buying some things from The Spanish Table and Arsicault. Rode Uber Green home. I uploaded some photos to Flickr. Dinner at home with Patrick: slow cooker red beans and rice, water. We watched The Mandalorian s3:e7 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed.

Thu Apr 13, 2023

Staycation day 6 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and sliced almonds, toasted shredded coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Midmorning we shared one croissant and one chocolate croissant from Arsicault, but neither of us could finish—too rich. Coffee with milk for Patrick, hot water for me. Later we rode Muni and walked to Morning Due, meeting Kerry and Mom Ryan for lunch. Mom Ryan had a grilled chicken sandwich and water. Kerry had a tuna melt and a Heinekin. Patrick had a toasted chicken club wrap and strawberry italian soda. I had a chorizo breakfast burrito with medium chai latte. Afterwards we returned to their place to celebrate recent birthdays with a small slice of chocolate cake each. Patrick and I departed and returned home on Muni. Patrick napped. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick had leftovers from today's lunch. I had his ramen leftovers from yesterday. Water to drink. Cutting board oil treatment. Afterwards we watched Ted Lasso s3:e5 on Apple TV+ then Star Trek: Picard s3:e9 on Paramount+. I walked in place during part of watching. Patrick went to bed. I played Guess Where SF on Flickr.

Fri Apr 14, 2023

Staycation day 7 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, raisins; leftover shrimp and corn and mango from the recent tacos; hot water with squeeze of half lemon. Rode Muni to vintage and thrift clothing shopping in the Inner Sunset and on Haight Street. Ate fresh rolls with shredded pork at Bahn Mi Crunch which opened on April 8. My order took longer than expected to arrive, and when it did it was packaged to go instead of for here, so I had to wait even longer for them to fix it. The food was delicious. Found a $18.50 button-up short-sleeved shirt great for Pride at Crossroads Haight. Found a women's XS jacket at Aviator Nation that fit me perfectly but did not buy it because it was $850. Stopped for a decaf cafe latte at 1428 Haight Patio Cafe and Crepery. Rode Muni to 9th and Judah. Shopped nearby places for a specific kind of white bread Patrick needed for a recipe. Found it at 5th and Judah. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: toasted roast beef and manchego sandwiches on Spanish paella bread, water. I washed dishes while Patrick prepared madeleines for a gathering we are hosting on Sunday. We watched Schmigadoon! (Schmicago) s2:e2 on Apple TV+. Patrick went to bed. Late small meal for me: shrimp wonton soup from frozen, water.

Sat Apr 15, 2023

Staycation day 8 of 9. Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; hot water. Housecleaning all day. Midmorning snack: a Panda Express fortune cookie. My fortune: Great things happen outside of your comfort zone. Patrick prepared carrot cake and egg salad, and I helped, mostly with washing dishes. Lunch: Patrick had leftover red beans and rice. I had leftover ten don and a half roast beef sandwich with lettuce and tomato and mayo and freshly ground black pepper. Water to drink. I napped while Patrick continued preparing for tomorrow's gathering. Cut my hair, showered. I prepared dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick had a leftover half of a sandwich. I had a large salad with celery, tomato, grated carrot, ranch dressing, imitation bacon bits, and cotija. Water to drink. Afterwards we watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s5:e1 on Amazon Prime Video. Late snack: butter on sourdough toast, water.

Sun Apr 16, 2023

Staycation day 9 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; hot water. Finished preparations for today's gathering. We invited a small group of friends for sweets and treats: Southern Sweet Sunday. Patrick prepared carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, strawberry shortcake icebox cake, Earl Grey and lavender madeleines, bourbon-spiked New Orleans iced coffee, and Southern egg salad sandwiches. Attending: Chris and Nate, Drew and Tai, Chris and Andy, and Quyen and Dave. Phil had to travel and was unable to attend. The day was particularly warm for the Sunset District, so we all sat outside. I smsed (Apple) or emailed (Android) the menu to everyone. The wine: a delicious 2021 Ostatu rioja rosado we found at The Spanish Table on Clement Street. Tai and Drew brought a bottle of Jacuzzi dolcetto nouveau. Quyen and Dave brought a bottle of J. Schram rosé. Chris and Nate brought a bar of Lonohana Kanahiku chocolate. Among other things, we talked about Mexico, hawks and crows, AI, Elon Musk, band-aids, exploding whales, J.K. Rowling, alcohol consumption, smart speakers, $830 jackets that fit perfectly, St. Judas, politics, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl, H.G. Wells, television, sleeping customs and habits, sleep speed, heating devices including heated socks, Apple Sidecar failing, . After everyone departed I realized I had more to ask everyone about. Patrick and I cleaned and tidied. Later we had dinner: leftover red beans and newly prepared steamed white rice. I also had a half roast beef sandwich with lettuce and mayo. We watched Schmigadoon! (Schmicago) s2:e3 on Apple TV+ then two Recollection Road videos on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Late snack: leftover egg salad sandwiches, water.

Mon Apr 17, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Back to work after a week of staycation. Met Joanne C. Caught up on email; lots of followup. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work, including reviewing the newly added Gartner Lab. Lunch at Hahn's Hibachi: bbq chicken lunch special which included bbq chicken, steamed white rice, cold bean sprouts, small salad with peanut dressing, two tempura prawns with dipping sauce, and two gyoza. Hot green tea to drink. All food and drink was delicious. Mailing list HR update. Published an event for Carolina L. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie cheese burgers and fries, flavored water for Patrick, water for me. I installed a wall mount for the HomePod mini in the kitchen. I used a white one from HomeMount found on Amazon, and the two-screw installation was easy. We watched various YouTube videos and film trailers. Patrick went to bed. I began copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo.

Tue Apr 18, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Got a new ID badge from (Sharida?). The first part of the process was simple enough, but then I was told to wait 10 or 15 minutes before it would start working, but I had to wait over 20 minutes before it worked. Afterwards I had to transfer my FastPay account by calling their phone number. Siteimprove issue followup. Visited the Vision clinic to ask about issues with new eyeglasses. Lunch by myself at Peasant Pies: thai-style fire chicken and rice soup, beef and potato pie, water. Afternoon snack: one navel orange. Upgraded macOS from 12.6.3 to 12.6.5. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: salad bar, water. Afterwards we watched various YouTube videos and Ted Lasso s3:e6 on Apple TV+. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes and continued reading Tony Fadell's Build on Kindle web reader on my MacBook Pro. Late snack: two small pieces of leftover Chinese pancake from Patrick's dumpling lunch today.

Wed Apr 19, 2023

Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Continued reading Tony Fadell's Build on Amazon Kindle web reader. Worked from home. Began using HotHands insole foot warmers when working from home since I was reluctant to reinvest in new VB20S batteries for my six-year-old 3Volt heated smart slippers since they worked but not as well as I had imagined. The HotHands insole foot warmers work a tad too well for thinner socks, so I switched to thicker socks so that it wasn't too hot. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work, including manually adding Gartner Lab to all active policies because Siteimprove provides no easier way. Read CSS Layout News #343. Edited Oni-Orison Lab content draft for Michael D. Lunch at home with Patrick: we ate leftovers from his dumplings lunch yesterday. I also had a bowl of shrimp wonton soup from frozen. HotHands insole foot warmers lasted about 9 hours, just like it claims. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Little Original Joe's: caesar salad, medium California Dreamin' pizza (bbq sauce, mozzarella, smoked gouda, bbq rotisserie chicken, pickled jalapeño, red onion, cilantro) with no pickled jalapenos. Delivery was extra quick and all food was delicious. Water and white wine to drink. I began removing Logitech Z906 speakers and wall mountings and relocated the standalone DVD player from the bottom to the top of the bookshelf. Patched holes in walls. We ate pizza while watching Schmigadoon! (Schmicago) s2:e4 on Apple TV+ then The Mandalorian s3:e8 (season finale) on Disney+. Patrick washed dishes and went to bed. I finished speaker work for now. Installed SEP RU6. While doing the speaker work today I stumbled across an interesting feature that we were unable to do in our previous audio setup with the Logitech Z906 speakers. Our 4th-generation Apple TV can play to the TV speakers simultaneously with the HomePod. Now most built-in TV speakers are terrible, so you normally wouldn't want to do this, but we have headphones plugged in to the TV, and this feature enabled the same Apple TV sound to output to the HomePod and to our wired headphones simultaneously. I am pretty sure that with the Z906 it was either the Z906 speakers or the headphones and never both at the same time. Why might you want this? Normally you wouldn't, but I thought it was interesting that it was possible when before HomePod I'm guessing it wasn't.

Thu Apr 20, 2023

Ran in place while watching today's SpaceX Starship test flight launch live then various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Continued reading Tony Fadell's Build on Amazon Kindle web reader. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Various task followup. Confirmed SEP RU6 install has no problems. Oni-Orisan Lab draft edits with Michael D. Published a commencement page update for Julia S. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftover pizza and salad. Patrick added greens to the remaining salad since it was so small. Water to drink. Afternoon snack: seaweed. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Daly City via DoorDash: seafood bbq mix with chicken katsu and mac salad for Patrick, seafood bbq mix with bbq short ribs and mac salad for me, one bbq chicken musubi to share. To drink: margaritas and water. We watched Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | Second Season Teaser Trailer | Paramount+ via Paramount Plus then Patrick Stewart on Frank Sinatra Being a Star Trek Fan, Starting the Show in ’87 & Picard Finale via Jimmy Kimmel Live then Star Trek: Picard s3:e10 (season finale) on Paramount+. Patrick went to bed. I tidied and washed dishes and made new ice.

Fri Apr 21, 2023

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. Recently finished reading Tony Fadell's Build. Continued rereading Priya Parker's The Art of Gathering. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Siteimprove linkchecking and policy work. Various task followup. Oni-Orisan Lab build. Changed my Mac's cursor outline color to black and fill color to bright yellow, which seems to work better for me on either light or dark backgrounds than the default. I wanted to lunch at Reverie Cafe, but it appeared to be closed for good even though Google told me it was open. Instead I ate at Crepes on Cole. When placing my order—half sandwich combo with turkey—I had trouble hearing the person ask me various questions, and I thought it was because they didn't speak loudly or clearly enough since I don't have a problem with my hearing and it was not a noisy environment. I took my number card and sat outside since it was a nice day. A reasonable while later my food arrived. The deliverator noticed that my table was wobbly and went back inside and returned with a wad of napkins to stabilize it, which took a minute. She asked me if I wanted hot sauce, mayo, or ketchup. I asked for mayo and ketchup since my meal included a sandwich and fries. She returned with mayo and ketchup. My drink still had not yet arrived (and she did not ask if I had a drink coming), so I went in to ask if I needed to pick it up myself. I discovered that the person who took my order forgot to make the drink, and then after some miscommunication he said he would bring it out to me in a bit, which he did. The chicken and vegetable soup was delicious but not hot. The ketchup bottle I received was new, so I had to unscrew the cap and remove the inner seal myself, which took a minute. The fries were delicious, but they seemed to be almost entirely runts. The sandwich already had mayo on it, so I am guessing that I was asked if I wanted mayo for the fries, which I did not, but I used it on the sandwich anyway since only one side was mayoed. The meal came with a salad, but I noticed decaying lettuce in parts of it and decided to not eat it at all. The salad seemed poorly dressed, anyhow. The sandwich was perfect. The iced chai tea latte was perfect. I did not complain about anything, but I'll likely not return. Reverie Cafe is gone, but Zazie, Beit Rima, Cole Valley Tavern, and La Boulangerie de San Francisco all seemed very popular better alternatives. I walked through Richard Gamble Memorial Park and enjoyed a delightful flower garden at 832 Clayton Street before running an errand at Walgreens where I'm amazed at how many products need to be locked up due to frequent theft. Then, while I was there shopping, I noticed someone who seemed to be taking products off shelves and putting them into a large, reusable bag, seemingly with intent to not pay for them. An employee made their presence known to this person who seemed to attempt to dodge them, and I did not follow either of them after I saw that happen. Then, while I awaited another employee to unlock one cabinet for something I needed, he tried maybe 12 different keys before finding the right one, apologizing that it was only his third day. The delay somewhat made me want to purchase all the same stuff on Amazon, but I stuck it out and got what I needed, checked out, and exited. I returned to the office by walking and taking Muni. Chatted briefly with Nathan D who was on his way to Mission Bay, and I gave him a small treat in return for small treats he has given me in the past. Reworked the commencement podium banner artwork in Illustrator for Leslie C and Neal Z at Southern Tailors Fabric Imaging. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers from L&L Hawaiian Barbecue Daly City, water. Dessert for Patrick only: ice cream. I washed dishes. Afterwards we watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s5:e2 on Amazon Prime Video. Patrick went to bed. We cuddled a while. I arose. Continued copyediting Patrick's short story collection called Fancy Gumbo. Late at night I heard sounds outside our back door that were consistent with that of a vole that had found its way into the doorway area where it is unable to climb out because it had traveled down some concrete steps. I opened the door, confirmed that it was a vole, and left a Post-It note on the door to warn Patrick when he awakes. I installed Battery Monitor: Health, Info by Rocky Sand Studio because recently my MacBook Pro died in the middle of working because it ran out of battery. I had thought I had connected it to power, but someone removed a cable while I was away. It seems that Mac laptops no longer provide a warning when the battery is low unless you install a third-party application. It did not work ideally on my 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro with a notch because it kept nagging me to click in a certain place that was within the notch in order to begin using it. I had to quit a bunch of other apps before I could do so, but I only knew that I needed to do that from other similar experiences—if you quit enough things that appear in the menu bar, the thing you seek will eventually appear. There's no way for someone to know that's how it works, though. I configured it the way I wanted, then restarted the computer to be sure that all the apps I had quit restarted. Late snack: oil-free, salt-free popcorn from the silicone microwave popcorn popper; water.

Sat Apr 22, 2023

The trapped vole I encountered last night had disappeared! Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; hot water. More tidying and housecleaning all day following the removal of the Logitech Z906 speakers. The landlord arrived today to install a new bathroom light fixture. There was a delay at the start because the fixture was broken upon opening, so they had to exchange it. They were unable to find the exact replacement, so they returned with a different one that turned out to be too long. After we agreed we would wait for the replacement of the proper size, they moved our mailbox from the garage door to our front door. I installed a mounting bracket for the HomePod in the living room. The one I used is from Amazon: Wall Mount Compatible HomePod, ALLICAVER Sturdy Metal Made Mount Stand Holder Compatible HomePod Smart Speaker (Black) and it worked well except that during installation two of the anchors failed to open during screwing, and this was evident because I could pull or wiggle the bracket and it was obviously loose. I resolved this by using different screws I already happened to have. Lunch: I prepared for myself a bagel sandwich with lettuce, red onion, tartar sauce, cheddar cheese, and leftover fried fish. In the UCSF School of Pharmacy websites, it's not clear what is meant by the Class of 2021P and the Class of 2021T, so one might wonder: what does the P mean or what does the T mean or what does the P stand for or what does the T stand for? Both terms refer to PharmD classes graduating in 2021. The 2021P class graduated from the older pathway curriculum, so P stands for Pathway. The 2021T class graduated from the newer transformed curriculum, so T stands for Transformed. We had two classes graduate in the same year because the PharmD program transitioned (or transformed) from a four-year program to a three-year program, wholly rethinking the curriculum anew. And so one year had to have two class years graduate at the same time, with one class year beginning in 2017 and the other beginning in 2018.
