Mon Aug 1, 2022

Staycation day 3 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, diced half banana, and blueberries; water. Walked in the neighborhood for about an hour. Rode Muni to Stonestown Galleria to shop. Bought some clothes at Sports Basement. Walked to Urbano Sundial. Walked along Ocean Avenue. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: spinach and brussel sprout green shakshuka, water. Afterwards we watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s4:e7 on Amazon Prime Video then 43 minutes of Whitney Cummings: Jokes on Netflix instant watch. I washed dishes during a break in watching. Patrick went to bed.

Staycation day 4 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, diced half banana, and blueberries; water. Patrick and I rode Muni to 9th and Judah then walked into Golden Gate Park. We visited the Japanese Tea Garden which (Patrick told me recently) is free for San Francisco residents, also stopping for light refreshment: hohicha for Patrick, genmaicha for me. We shared a dorayaki (red bean pancake). We visited the de Young Museum which was free today (first Tuesdays) for the permanent collections. We returned to 9th and Irving and stopped for lunch at Pacific Catch, which recently reopened July 18 following a remodel which pleased us. Excellent service and food. Patrick had two tacos (traditional baja and guajillo shrimp) with salad. I had one taco a la carte (traditional baja sub jalapeno tartar for lime crema). My taco unexpectedly and delightfully came with a few tortilla chips. Thai iced tea for Patrick. Nojito for me. We walked and rode Muni home. Patrick napped. I amputagged yesterday's clothing purchases and put them in the laundry. I continued considering how to rework our entertainment setup so that we no longer need a laptop in the living room so that we can give Sam a two-year-old laptop to replace the five-year-old one we recently gave him since he can't afford one on his own. We watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel s4:e8 (season finale) on Amazon Prime Video. I washed dishes during a break in watching. Patrick went to bed. Continued technology research until late.

Wed Aug 3, 2022

Staycation day 5 of 9. Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, diced half banana; water. Began preparing things to sell, give away, or dispose. Continued technology research all day. Vacuumed. Lunch: leftover bulgur wheat salad, water. Patrick returned from errands with Sam. We served Sam a light refreshment: warmed cornmeal bread, cold half-decaf coffee. They continued errands. Rested in bed. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Trattoria di Vittorio: caesar salad to share, chicken parmigiana for Patrick, pollo pesto pappardelle for me, side of sliced baguette, red wine, water. We briefly continued playing Hidden Folks on the iPad Air. We watched 54 minutes of Jurassic Park on Netflix DVD. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Thu Aug 4, 2022

Staycation day 6 of 9. Cleaned the bathtub before showering. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, diced half banana; water. I rode Muni to San Francisco Zoo. I visited everything except the insect building. $21 after SF resident discount and "I rode Muni to get here" discount. I saw meerkats, prairie dogs, the Sculpture Learning Plaza, the playground, kangaroos, cassowary, the tropical rainforest building, ducks, parrots, black bears, gray wolves, other bears, therapy horses. The dining options were terrible. I lunched at Leaping Lemur Cafe: large chicken caesar with croutons, tap water. I saw a koala, anteaters, macaws, ibis, guanaco (llama), komodo dragons, peacocks, rhino, lion, snow leopard, anteater, rhino, bongo, chimpanzee, turtles, François’ langur, Gail’s Fragrance Garden, mandrill, lemurs, ostrich, giraffe. I watched a seagull regurgitate food to share it with two smaller and different birds that were begging it for food. I saw ducks, a crowned crane, gorillas, apes, flamingos, lemurs, the gift shop. The train did not seem to bother me as much as it did on my previous visit long ago. Inadequate or unclear signage was common. The dining venue next to the playground was much quieter, so I wanted to eat there, but they didn't have the salad I wanted and referred me to the larger dining hall. Some pathways were completely closed and without signs explaining that, so I was often looking at the map and then up at my situation trying to figure things out. In another case restrooms were inside the lion building that was closed, but there was no way to tell from the map. I stopped briefly at the Fleishhacker Pool Ruins before riding Muni home. I took more photos of things to sell, give away, or dispose. Snack with Patrick: blue corn tortilla chips; unroasted, unsalted cashews, water. Patrick prepared dinner: asian chicken lettuce wraps, water. Patrick had a glass of red wine. Afterwards we finished watching Jurassic Park on Netflix DVD with microwave popcorn (butter for Patrick, no-salt no-oil for me). We finished watching Cristela Alonzo: Middle Classy on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. The repair of the 2015 grey Sawyer belt by Arcade Belts is complete. I performed a butcher block wax treatment. Backed up the iPad Air then updated it from iPadOS 15.5 to 15.6. Backed up my iPhone to two computers. Reattached the magnifying mirror. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Late snack: slice of warmed cornbread, warm milk. Continued reading from Anne Raeff's The Jungle Around Us.

Fri Aug 5, 2022

Staycation day 7 of 9. Cleaned the bathtub before showering. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, diced half banana; water. I rode Muni to Civic Center Station, then walked to The Box. After you ring the doorbell, you're supposed to wait until someone opens the door. I met owner Mark, Melaine, Israel, and the occasionally loud but otherwise non-threatening-to-me shop dog (Solly or Sully?). The Box is a little-known shop containing lots of historical printed works, ephemera, and artifacts that aren't of your typical tourist value but which can be a goldmine for letterers, graphic designers, typographers, nostalgists, set designers, prop artisans, historians, and more. It's also a unique event space, with various rooms within. He claims to have 15 million items, and everything is for sale. It's like a museum but you can buy what you see. I looked through old, rare, and valuable pharmacy catalogs seeking inspiration for work, but it's hard to translate these old works and designs into modern design since the mediums, communications needs, and audiences were so different. It's not necessarily junk; I overheard him saying to another customer that he accepts materials in only 80% or better condition and that they are very careful about preventing mold, which I can imagine is disastrous for a place like this. I saw an old printing press. I enjoyed seeing huge cases of type drawers labeled with various font names. He explained leading to his other customers. There were message/order clipboards which I never knew existed. There were ancient typewriters that had designs that were odd even to me. He showed me framed prints from UCSF School of Pharmacy that Susie L or someone else had probably donated. He talked about how he was offered but didn't have space for a giant medicine cabinet that the Department of Clinical Pharmacy no longer wanted. I bought nothing but thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I then shopped at Mr. S Leather but bought nothing. Walked to La Cocina Marketplace and lunched at Boug Cali: two crispy beef tacos, Leidesdorf million dollar rose lemonade. This small meal was perfectly prepared and exactly what I needed. I walked to the Contemporary Jewish Museum and visited the Jim Henson exhibit on the free day. Among many other things, I learned that Jim Henson wasn't Jewish but Frank Oz (aka Oznowicz) was, that Grover was originally dark green instead of purple, that Miss Piggy's name was based on Peggy Lee's name, and that there's an interesting story about a Hitler puppet his family had created. Attempted some clothes shopping but bought nothing, visiting some shopping areas I hadn't been to in years. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick made for himself a ground chicken burger with fixins. I had leftover pollo pesto pappardelle. Water to drink. We watched Loot s1:e8 on Apple TV+ then What We Do In The Shadows s4:e5 on Hulu Basic Plan. While we watched I folded some laundry that Patrick had washed and dried earlier. Late at night I realized the pollo pesto pappardelle had likely upset my stomach, probably due to its richness.

Sat Aug 6, 2022

Staycation day 8 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with unsweetened soy milk, milk, flax meal, roasted pecans, dried and diced dried apricot; water. I folded laundry while rewatching John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid on Netflix instant watch. Tested towels that we had had washed at a nearby laundry service; the same lint problem we have been troubleshooting for over six months also exists. I'm not sure what to do now. Nap with Patrick. Unhooked and erased the NVIDIA Shield that Chris and Nate gave us in preparation for giving it away or selling it. Set up and tested a new Sony DVD player in preparation for repurposing our entertainment laptop to give to Sam. The DVD setup works. So we're now ready to buy Sonos speakers, but the ones I want are backordered with no estimate for when they'll return to stock. Shopped for eyeglasses. Dinner at home with Patrick: broccolini shirataki noodle salad with ginger mustard dressing, water. We watched Severance s1:e1 on Apple TV+ then The Sandman s1:e1 on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Late small meal: butter leaf lettuce salad with blue cheese dressing, grated sharp cheddar toasted on a small corn tortilla, blue corn tortilla chips, water.

Sun Aug 7, 2022

Staycation day 9 of 9. Stomach finally began to feel better this morning. Medium bowl of oatmeal with unsweetened soy milk, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, golden raisins; water. Cut my hair, showered. Patrick made date-oatmeal cookies today. Prepared for a wardrobe refresh. Shopped online at J. Crew Factory for boys clothes. Midafternoon snack: one ground chicken lettuce wrap, water. Shopped online at Janie and Jack for boys clothes. Cocktail and dinner at home with Patrick: variation on aperol bourbon spritz, crispy cod tacos, water. I washed dishes. We watched Lightyear on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. Late small meal: two ground chicken lettuce wraps, water. Dessert: one cookie, heated.

Mon Aug 8, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with unsweetened soy milk, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, golden raisins; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. First day back at work after a week off. Calendar management. Began an email thread about a physical security issue I encountered. Submitted a request to add Carolina L to Siteimprove. Lots of email and task followup. Watched the August 5 town hall that I had missed. Lunch at desk: leftover broccolini shirataki noodle salad with ginger mustard dressing, water. Ran a quick errand. Small FAA web edit for Angelie. Posted a new brand and identity tip in Teams. Read two NNGroup email newsletters. A-Z list management. Wrote new brand and identity tips for future posting. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: creamy roasted cauliflower soup, water. We watched the remainder of Whitney Cummings: Jokes and then started Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks, both on Netflix instant watch. Cuddled with Patrick a while then arose. Late small meal: ground chicken lettuce wraps, then later two cheese and chive small tacos with corn tortillas.

Tue Aug 9, 2022

Began home physical therapy for SIRVA. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shredded coconut, golden raisins; water. Worked from home. Web edits. Rewatched LinkedIn trainings: Building a Better To-Do List, Teamwork Foundations. 1:1 with Eric. Lunch at home with Patrick: pickup from King of Thai Noodle: crispy chicken over rice with fried egg and thai iced tea for Patrick, chicken pad thai and water for me. Web edits: Current Students. Lots of task followup. Dinner at home with Patrick: lasagna bolognese with lentil lasagne sheets, water, red wine. We finished watching Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks, then we began watching Pete Davidson Presents The Best Friends, both on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Today I attached a Wiim Mini to a set of Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers and got two-room synchronized audio working with the Logitech Z906 connected to a Roku TV and Apple TV. The Wiim setup didn't go smoothly, and choosing what music I wanted where did not always yet work as expected, but it did work. I made some changes to our network that Wiim recommended. We'll see how it goes. External hard drives connected to Patrick's computer have been randomly disconnecting for the past few days. A restart has seemed to fix it, but I ran Disk First Aid on them to confirm nothing awful has happened. Late small meal: tiny leftover chicken burger patty in a lettuce wrap, water.

Wed Aug 10, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Edited what I do for Nathan D for Eric. Created a new template for the White Coat Ceremony script. Followup with a redirect request sent to IT. Approved cardkey access requests from Angelie K. Took on a request from Lawrence L to change a password for a resource account. Chatted briefly with Karen. Lunch at desk: leftover lasagna bolognese with lentil lasagne sheets, water. Followup on edits for the BTS administration page with Alfonz S. Followup with Eric and Angelie K about HR data. Errand: rode Muni 43 to 33 to the Castro to pick up new reading glasses. I learned that glasses that don't have nosepieces with wires can have them added. Got a thai iced tea at Castro Tarts and worked at a sidewalk table for about two hours. There was no wifi, so I tethered to my phone. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: ground turkey dan dan zoodles, water. We watched 1h:11m of Jurassic Park: The Lost World on Netflix DVD. I washed most of the dishes at a break in the middle. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Late snack: earlier today Nathan D shared with me a Hing Wang pork bun. Water to drink.

Thu Aug 11, 2022

Whole wheat bran muffin from a batch Patrick made from scratch yesterday. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle to Mission Bay. Meeting with Eric and Anne. Coffee with Anne and Deborah at Philz. We also explored the plaza between 409 and 499 Illinois Street. Asked Logistics to resolve a frequent problem with misdelivered mail. Handled a logo request. Lunch at The Ramp with James (fried chicken sandwich) and Deborah (seared ahi tuna salad). It was our server's first day working at The Ramp. I had two al pastor tacos. The sauce it came with on the side was spicy, so I asked for a non-spicy sauce if they had it. The server brought me a different sauce, but it, too, was spicy. Water all around. I paid for the meal, and the others paid me back in Venmo and cash. We talked about paddleboarding, bicycling, vacations, and more. Afterwards Deborah returned to the office. I accompanied James to Happy Cow Creamery and Tea so that he could get boba tea. Back to the office. Followup with a CPCS question. Team meeting and training followup. UCSF shuttle from Mission Bay to Parnassus. Reviewed messages related to white coat ceremony preparations. Handled a letterhead request. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: quinoa-and-brown-rice spaghetti with onions, cabbage, and bacon; water; red wine. Afterwards we finished watching Jurassic Park: The Lost World on Netflix DVD. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Fri Aug 12, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Calendar management. Responded to a request about mailing lists from Lisa Z by way of Liana. Followup with Alfonz about the BTS administration page. Asked Carrie G how Eric and I can get more direct access to HR reports. Met with Eric and Lauren about the Info Sessions page. Eric and I completed work for this a little after we let Lauren go from the meeting. Lunch at desk: leftover lasagna bolognese with lentil lasagne sheets, water. Prepped for new White Coat tasks. Followup with IT requests. Met with Anne about Asana tasks. Dist list testing with Eric. D7 front-end work: changes for topbar, hero, and spotlight. Review inbox followup. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: whole wheat pan pizza with mushrooms turned out a disaster due to using previously frozen dough that failed to rise properly. Backup plan: Patrick had leftover cauliflower soup with a slice of sprouted multigrain and seed toast and butter, I had leftover dan dan zoodles. Water and red wine to drink. Began installing one of two Sonos One speakers. Setup did not go smoothly. We watched What We Do In The Shadows s4:e6 on Hulu Basic Plan then Loot s1:e9 on Apple TV+. I walked in place while watching. Patrick went to bed. Finished Sonos One setup after a lot of futzing. I washed dishes.

Sat Aug 13, 2022

Troubleshot problems with Patrick's computer: frequent "disk not ejected properly" errors, "already in use on this network". Unchecking "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" seemed to fix this the former. To fix the latter, I set up new network profiles for "wired and wifi," "wifi only," and "wired only" and set it to "wired only." Ran and walked in place to a rewatching of John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City (2018) on Netflix instant watch. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, roasted slivered almonds, blueberries; water. Troubleshot problems with Patrick's computer: Chrome fails to open via Spotlight and Chrome takes a long time to open. Clearing the browser cache seemed to fix this. Tested the new Sonos One speaker. Patrick napped. Midmorning snack: heated slice of banana bread that Patrick baked recently. Small glass of milk to drink. Changed air purifier prefilters. Set up the second of two Sonos One speakers. Again, setup did not go smoothly. Lunch by myself: leftover quinoa-and-brown-rice spaghetti with onions, cabbage, and bacon mixed with ground turkey from the dan dan zoodles. To drink: water with a squeeze of Meyer lemon. Patrick arose. I napped. Did more configuring of Sonos. The setup process is repeatedly awful, but eventually I got it working. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from PPQ Noodle House: five-spice chicken rice plate with side salad. Patrick's included imperial rolls. Thai iced tea for both to drink. I also still had lemon water from earlier. I washed dishes. We finished watching Pete Davidson Presents The Best Friends on Netflix instant watch then The Simpsons s33:e5 on Hulu Basic Plan. Patrick went to bed. We still encountered "disk not ejected properly" errors, so I unplugged two external drives from the OWC Dock and plugged them into the laptop with USB-A-to-USB-C adapters. Added more keyboard shortcuts to my journal to provide redundancy when the ones I chose earlier are already taken by the operating system or browser plugins like Vimium. Recently received what appears to be a money-related phishing attempt from 626-563-7437. I couldn't see a way to block the number, so I simply deleted the message.

Sun Aug 14, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, roasted slivered almonds, toasted shredded coconut, blueberries; water. Troubleshot more setup and config problems with Sonos: "There was a problem adding Alexa." I tried many things, including repeatedly power-cycling Sonos speakers and the router, logging out of all Amazon apps on my phone (I counted 5, but only 4 permitted logging out), disabling and reenabling the Sonos skill on the Alexa app, and I don't know how I resolved it, but I got it working again. A few hours later I decided to call it quits after more problems. We'd ask Alexa to play a playlist and she would agree to play it but no sound could be heard. The app would show the song playing—with seconds counting up—but we could not hear it from the speaker. The Sonos app on my iPhone and iPad frequently failed to connect or find the speakers even though they were successfully playing music on Spotify. Sometimes, while looking at the Sonos app, speakers would simply disappear or appear even though they could be seen in the Spotify app as Airplay speakers and even though they were audibly playing music. Submitted a request to return both Sonos speakers. Will be happy to get this extremely frustrating technology out of my life. Midmorning snack: heated slice of banana bread. Lunch: leftover quinoa-and-brown-rice spaghetti with onions, cabbage, and bacon mixed with ground turkey from the dan dan zoodles. Nap and rest due to poor sleep last night. Dinner at home with Patrick: turkey bolognese over creamy polenta, water. Patrick had a cocktail. We watched The Sandman s1:e2 on Netflix instant watch with microwave popcorn. Patrick also had a bowl of yogurt with honey and toasted shredded coconut. I washed dishes. We then watched about an hour of Dr. Jason Leong: Hashtag Blessed on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. I investigated Sonos alternatives. Updated my clothing measurements document and found that I am shrinking. Patrick made a loaf of whole wheat bread today. Recently we received our KitchenAid mixer back from the repair shop; it needed a cleaning and regreasing. Patrick has made only a few things so far since it has returned. I toasted a slice of bread then spread butter on it as a late snack. Water to drink.

Mon Aug 15, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, roasted slivered almonds, toasted shredded coconut, golden raisins; water. Rode Muni to work. Chatted briefly with Nathan. Calendar management. Custom HR report prep and delivery. Handled a small web edit for Phillip B. Chatted with Eric in Teams about the HR filter report (and where the current one lives). Lunch at Perilla with Nathan D: vermicelli noodles with imperial rolls, chicken for him, beef for me. Thai iced tea for me, water for both. We talked about hot and cold spaces, homes (current and previous), renting, friends and relationships, families, generational differences, Breaking Bad, Netflix DVD, the PharmD program, Disneyland, food spiciness, boba tea, COVID and other viruses, and more—a nice time. Followup with FAA redirect: I forgot that in order for file redirects to work the file must first be deleted. Followup with password change request with IT. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Chatted with Deborah on Zoom to work on a news story she is publishing. Miller Lab prep for migration. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Moroccan red lentil stew with cornbread, water. Dessert for Patrick only: two homemade date-oatmeal cookies, previously frozen. Afterwards we finished watching Dr. Jason Leong: Hashtag Blessed on Netflix instant watch then began watching Severance s1:e2 on Apple TV+. Patrick went to bed. I continued troubleshooting errors on Patrick's computer. The recurring symptom was that an external drive would report with "disk not ejected properly." I discovered that the laptop's hard drive reported errors when Disk First Aid (DFA) was run on it in recovery mode: "The volume [name] was found to be corrupt and needs to be repaired" and "Unable to perform deferred repairs." Running DFA on the container seemed to resolve it. Then next while checking an external hard drive: "warning: mismatch between extentref entry reference count (0) and calculated fsroot entry reference count (-1) for extent (177070352 + 4)" appeared on two different Time Machine snapshots. Then two occurrences of "error: missing/invalid physical extent (177070352 + 4) with refcnt -1 at snapshot [number]" and "error: failed to enable crypto I/O mode for container /dev/rdisk7: Invalid argument" and "Some APFS cryptographic state information was unexpectedly unavailable. : (-69461)—Operation failed..." I tried erasing the volume and got "An internal error has occurred. : (-69620)" I then tried deleting the volume and got "An internal error has occurred. : (-69623)—Operation failed..." I stopped there.

Tue Aug 16, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, sliced hot cinnamon apple; water. Worked from home. Miller Lab prep for golive. 1:1 with Eric. D7 styling: PharmD cards. Lunch at home: leftover lasagna bolognese with lentil lasagne sheets, water. White Coat Ceremony prep meeting with Julia and many others. This year we have two ceremonies. Began drafting one of the programs for students. Reinstalled Box since I noticed that files in Finder did not provide the right-click Share and other options. Dinner at home with Patrick: beer-battered fried cod with tarter sauce, onion rings, side salad, water. Afterwards we watched The Sandman s1:e3 then Moshe Kasher: Live in Oakland, both on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. We cuddled a while. I arose and washed dishes. Tried on clothes that I had ordered online from J. Crew Factory. They were all too large except for one item. Prepared them for return. Late snack: mexican cheeses on a small corn tortilla.

Wed Aug 17, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, blueberries; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Visited Lucia and Joel in the OSACA. White Coat programs in InDesign all day. Worked with Robin C on digital letterhead. Responded to a logo request from student PN. Worked with Yvette H on digital letterhead. Followup on Yvette H person page with Erika C. Lunch at Underdogs Tres: iced tea, baja-style fish taco, Nick's way. I ate at the bar counter. Nick's Way is a crispy corn tortilla on the inside and a soft corn tortilla on the outside. I liked the contrasting textures, and the extra tortilla seemed to help if or when the crispy shell cracked. Without an outer tortilla, taco fillings commonly fall out. It was a little life-changing. Posted a QBI event for Carolina L. Reviewed review inbox. More dist list testing with Eric. More White Coat work: web programs. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie burgers with cheese and whole grain chips, water. We watched What We Do In The Shadows s4:e7 on Hulu Basic Plan then The Sandman s1:e4 on Netflix instant watch then the remainder of Moshe Kasher: Live in Oakland on Netflix instant watch. I walked in place for part of the watching. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Thu Aug 18, 2022

Ran in place to YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, blueberries; water. Worked from home. Chatted with Eric about the White Coat programs. Patrick rented a Getaround car today to run some errands. I ran one errand with him to mail some packages, first at the post office, then at the UPS Store. Topbar update followup. While running errands, Patrick brought home takeout from Mamahuhu. Spicy chicken sandwich for him, beef with broccoli and shiitake for me. Jade fried rice and egg rolls to share. Water to drink. Troubleshot a problem with featured images displaying smaller than expected only on my iPhone 12 mini; could not reproduce in any desktop browsers or iOS Simulator. Miller Lab launch and post-launch tasks. Siteimprove work: word misspellings review. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Spiazzo: insalate alla cesare, pizza capriciossa grande, water. Patrick also had a glass of red wine. We watched Jurassic World: Dominion on Netflix DVD. This film is probably the last DVD we'll watch on what I call the entertainment computer, which is just a MacBook Pro hooked to a TV via HDMI and which has an Apple SuperDrive plugged in via a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Fri Aug 19, 2022

Dessert: reheated date-oatmeal cookies, previously frozen; we shared a mug of hot chocolate made with cocoa and dutch cocoa. We watched She-Hulk s1:e1 on Disney+ then about three-fourths of America the Beautiful s1:e1 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Installed Apple updates for home devices. Wood butter butcher block treatment. New eyeglasses arrived, but they don't seem to work properly for me. Late small meal: leftover half egg roll, leftover jade fried rice, water.

Sat Aug 20, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted shredded coconut, cacao nibs, blueberries. Patrick recently made a variation of Cosette's Kitchen's almond orange semolina cupcakes (which to me seemed like muffins instead of cupcakes). I ate one reheated. Water to drink. Recharge Medical work for Drew: found and shared copies of aftercare plans and consent form PDFs. Cleaned in the bathroom. Repaired with wood glue a piece of wood that had broken off the mule chest. Submitted a warranty replacement request for a USB-C-to-Lightning cable that had an inconsistent connection. If the cable is slightly bent, wiggled, or disturbed, it temporarily disconnects. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftover pizza from Spiazzo, water. Research for replacing a seven-year-old WD (Western Digital) external hard disk drive that finally died. Patrick made a loaf of banana bread using chickpea flour. I washed dishes. We watched half of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Patterson Cut, provided as an mp4 file. This film is probably going to be the last thing we watch on what I call the entertainment computer, which is just a MacBook Pro hooked to a TV via HDMI. Patrick had an iced coffee with cheese puffs. I had a few sips of the coffee. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Troubleshot error message "streem is downloading a file from com.box.desktop" by uninstalling Box Drive for Mac, restarting, then reinstalling. Late snack: heated slice of chickpea-flour banana bread, water. Continued playing wurdweb and Hidden Folks on my iPad Air.

Sun Aug 21, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted shredded coconut, cacao nibs, diced half banana; heated slice of chickpea-flour banana bread; water. Patrick and I rode Muni 48 to Church Street then walked to visit Kerry and Mom Ryan in the rear garden. We chatted for about an hour before saying goodbye. Lunch with Patrick at Wilkommen: we shared a cheeseburger and fries, schniztel and mushroom sauce with red cabbage, arnold palmer for me, Patrick had Nectar of Life kolsch-style ale. All food and drink was delicious; we really like Wilkommen. We walked to Spike's where Patrick had a flat white latte and I had a chai tea latte. For about 15 minutes we enjoyed watching a dog stop and lie down and refuse to go anywhere, much to the chagrin of the dog's human caretaker who surprisingly did not get upset. She seemed resigned to her fate. Eventually they departed in the opposite direction she wanted to go. Grocery shopping and restroom at Mollie Stone's. Rode Muni streetcar then L-Taraval bus home. I formatted a newly arrived external hard disk drive as APFS Encrypted then began new backups with Carbon Copy Cloner. Patrick made whole-wheat oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Dinner at home with Patrick: I prepared chickpea macaroni and ate it with leftover turkey bolognese and leftover grilled mushrooms. Patrick had leftover lentil soup. Water to drink. Patrick made microwave butter popcorn and prepared two cookies to eat while we finished watching Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi: The Patterson Cut, provided as an mp4 file.

Mon Aug 22, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted shredded coconut, cacao nibs, diced half banana; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Added links to a document for Eric: KMG photo and signature. Posted a new brand and identity tip to Teams. Asana task followup. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Lunch: I walked to Park Gyros and ordered a chicken gyro wrap to go. They were out of chicken. I ordered a salmon gyro wrap. After 10 or 15 minutes my order was ready. I walked across the street to Golden Gate Park and began to eat, but something was wrong. My wrap was not salmon. It turned out to be lamb and beef, which was a bit distressing to me because I know my stomach does not like the taste of lamb. I returned to Park Gyros and explained what happened. They took the lamb and beef wrap and made my salmon wrap. I again walked to Golden Gate Park and ate it. It was not as hot as I would have liked, surprising since it was just made, but otherwise it was fine. To drink I had a black cherry seltzer (no sugar). Rode Muni 7 to 3rd Street, then walked back to work. Met with Eric and James: sell sheet brainstorming. D9 front-end work: news views build. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: chickpea tuna mac n' cheese with peas, water. We watched The Sandman s1:e5 on Netflix instant watch. We both went to bed and cuddled and slept. I arose about 90 minutes later. Reconfigured backups that I began yesterday since I realize that I had made a slight misconfiguration. I washed dishes while listening to Ten Percent Happier with Dan Harris: Run Toward the Danger with Sarah Polley. Continued running in place to Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool on Netflix instant watch which I had started recently and forgot to mention it here. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; water. Worked from home. Reformatted my work laptop external Time Machine hard drive because for some reason my password for it would no longer work and I couldn't figure out why. While doing so, Disk Utility crashed: "Exception Type: EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT), Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000, Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY". I restarted my computer then tried again and was successful. Successfully upgraded Docker from 4.10.1 to 4.11.1 without breaking anything. Short 1:1 with Eric. Lunch at home with Patrick and Sam: meatless tacos with Patrick's homemade tortillas, water. Dinner at home with Patrick: coconut-sweet-potato soup with grilled swiss cheese with basil and blackberries on Patrick's homemade whole wheat bread, water. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, diced peach; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Met with Eric. Lunch at desk: leftover tuna mac and cheese. Nathan also shared with me a leftover slice of cheese pizza from last week's White Coat Ceremony. Water from my water bottle. Orgchart work. Met with Eric and James about D9 events work. We finished watching Severance s1:e2 on Apple TV+ then finished watching America the Beautiful s1:e1 on Disney+ then watched a few minutes of Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special before stopping because I didn't think it was funny then started watching Marc Maron: End Times Fun. Patrick went to bed. Troubleshot problems with the remaining Wiim Mini which repeatedly could not be found by the Wiim Home app after restarting the computer it was connected to. Same like the Sonos speakers. I figured out that deleting the Wiim Home app and then reinstalling it would sometimes make it work again. Or resetting the device by holding its play button for 10 seconds until it blinks white and red then setting it up again would sometimes make it work again. Too much trouble. I decided to return it for a refund. Mounted two portable hard drives off-desk at Patrick's computer using sticky dots. I washed dishes. Installed Airfoil on Patrick's computer and found that no only does it work and seems to have lots of useful options, but it also sends music to a Bluetooth speaker that I didn't think we could use for multi-room audio.

Washed plastic bags protecting outdoor furniture seat cushions; they had gotten some bird poop on them—eww. Took the entertainment computer out of service and cleaned it with a damp cloth and a keyboard brush. Installed the standalone DVD player. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftovers from last night. Afterwards Patrick had a previously frozen whole-wheat oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. Cleaned in the bathroom. Midafternoon snack: leftover chicken fried rice, tortilla chips, water. Gave up on trying to purchase a wireless (wifi) speaker for streaming music to the kitchen. My shortlist was (1) Bose Home Speaker 500, (2) Marshall Uxbridge, (3) Denon Home 150. I eliminated all of them because of reviews that complained about connectivity issues—same with the Sonos speakers and the Wiim Mini I tried. We have a Bluetooth-only Harmon Kardon Esquire Mini that we can use with Airfoil for $29. We're still using the trial version of Airfoil for now until we're sure it does what we want. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Hall of Flame Burger via Uber Eats: buzzer beater burger (half pound cheddar cheeseburger) medium with fries and chocolate milkshake for Patrick, flightless falcon sandwich (grilled chicken burger) for me, onion rings to share. Staycation day 3 of 16. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, applesauce, raspberries; water. Patrick and I ran errands, delivering packages to be returned to a nearby place for packages, then riding Muni to the Castro where we walked the Castro Cross and stopped at Philz for a light refreshment: toasted everything bagel with cream cheese and an iced mint mojito to share. We encountered Geordie E and Sinta and chatted with them a bit. I went to an eye doctor appointment to try to resolve an eyeglasses order that did not work out. We lunched at Saucy Asian: I had an island-style Poke It with greens and crab salad. Patrick had the tonkatsu with rice. San Pell flavored sodas to drink. We walked to and visited with Kerry and Mom Ryan at their home in the back garden. We rode Muni home. I napped while Patrick continued painting The Great Wave. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from 4505 Burger and BBQ: I had a one-meat plate with pulled chicken, frankaroni, potato salad, and parker house roll with water; Patrick had a smoked ribs plate with frankaroni, baked beans, and parker house roll with a Stella Artois; one extra parker house roll. When the order arrived I was disappointed to find that instead of pulled chicken I received a hot link, which I could not eat because it was too spicy for me, so Patrick and I swapped after he had had one of the four ribs. Stopped for lunch at Ramen Hiroshi (322 Kearny Street): shio ramen, unsweetened cold green tea: about $22 after a $2 tip for extremely inattentive service.
