Staycation day 6 of 16. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; water. Rode Muni and walked to the Conservatory of Flowers. Visited the Dahlia Garden. Purchased and mostly enjoyed the VoiceMap tour called The Secrets of Golden Gate Park: Graft, Gunfire and a 90-Year-Old Fish by Peter Hartlaub and Heather Knight of the San Francisco Chronicle. The hike to the top of Strawberry Hill was unnecessary because the views were mostly blocked by overgrowth of trees, the humanmade waterfall was not that special, and I would rather not have seen the reservoir. I almost missed the path adjacent to the Calacademy driveway. Everything else was great. Walked to Cinderella Bakery and Cafe for a light refreshment: blinchiki with mushrooms topped with dill and sour cream (delicious), iced coffee with milk (I did not like it). Rode Muni to Presidio Tunnel Tops, where I thoroughly enjoyed the new public park. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: cauliflower, orange bell pepper, and avocado crema soft tacos on homemade corn tortillas. I washed dishes. Afterwards we watched She-Hulk: Attorney at Law s1:e3 on Disney+ then Documentary Now! 2015 S01E01 Sandy Passage via documentaries only on YouTube then Everything You Need to Know Before RINGS Of POWER: Lord of The Rings RECAP via ScreenCrush on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Organized the mouth care storage box. Oil butcher block treatment.

Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: pizza margherita di napoli, water. I washed dishes. We watched The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power s1:e1 on Amazon Prime Video with microwave butter popcorn and a homemade cream soda. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes.

Staycation day 8 of 16. 100% sleep quality last night according to Sleep Cycle app. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, diced half banana; water. Cleaned the bathroom. Insomnia and SIRVA research. Changed air purifier prefilters. Lunch at home with Patrick: I had leftover salmon bowl to which I added two chicken nuggets from frozen; water to drink. Patrick had five chicken nuggets with leftover BBQ sauce. We ate outside with me in the sun wearing long sleeves and a hat, him in the shade. Continued insomnia and SIRVA research. Midafternoon snack: tortilla chips, water. Continued reading from Anne Raeff's The Jungle Around Us. Performed light mitigation in the bedroom by covering power strip LEDs and other small device lights with gaff tape. Patrick has made a set of three homemade pizza doughs for us to use over the coming days. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom, basil, and garlic pizza di napoli. Water to drink. Patrick also had a glass of red wine. Patrick made a healthyish dessert from yogurt, chocolate chips, crumbled chickpea banana bread. Afterwards we watched The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power s1:e2 on Amazon Prime Video. I washed dishes during a break and after Patrick went to bed. Archived documents and prepared recent purchase shipping boxes for disposal.

Staycation day 9 of 16. 100% sleep quality last night according to Sleep Cycle app. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, blueberries; water. Rode Muni to Civic Center Station, then walked to the Asian Art Museum for Free First Sunday. Used their iPhone app and my Airpod Pros to listen to commentary. I found the app hard to use but ultimately serviceable. I suspect that after having had really nice experiences with VoiceMap, all other tour apps will seem burdensome. Instead of the Asian Art Museum tour app, I wished that you could choose a focus, such as Masterpieces, and then—like VoiceMap—simply walk and be instructed where to go without needing to pull out the phone every few minutes. The Asian Art Museum app is nice in that it provides audio descriptions of the art, but it fails to recognize that those who want it probably want it all the time and those who don't probably don't want it all of the time. The map was hard to use because it doesn't take advantage of GPS, so it's hard to figure out where you entered a gallery. The app doesn't detect what floor you're on, so if the map it presents is not of the floor you're on, you have to figure that out and figure out how to change to the floor you're on. The map can't be rotated on the device, so you have to mentally impose the presented model of the space onto your physical perception of the space in order to figure out which direction you need to move to get to the next tour item. (You can physically rotate your phone, but since it's a fixed isometric drawing, my brain had a hard time with it, and I gave up trying that.) One nice thing was being able to access numbered items via direct entry. Occasionally the tour would refer to gallery numbers, which was problematic because the signs showing the gallery numbers were very discreet and with poor contrast, perhaps in low-lit areas. The real-world headphones-and-number icons indicating an available audio guide were very small and should have been larger—large enough to see from a distance. Sometimes the numbers did not seem to match the item. I took a break after finishing the third floor and realizing that it was past noon. I walked to Sunset Squares and had a terrible time trying to place an order via their QR code mobile ordering system using Square. I entered my credit card number and then selected the button to continue, but it would not progress, and my inputfields failed to show the dots one usually sees that hide the number. I was so frustrated that I didn't want to talk to anyone and simply left. Neither did anyone approach me to welcome me or ask if I needed help. I walked to Villon, where service was slow and somewhat inattentive, but I was glad to be in a nice environment. I didn't want a full meal, so I ordered and enjoyed toasted banana bread with whipped honey butter and an iced coffee with milk. I would have preferred something less sweet, but smaller portion size won over my other possible savory choices, which were all either much larger or not exactly what I wanted (e.g., side dishes). I returned to the Asian Art Museum, visiting the remaining floors and special exhibits. Rode Muni to the Castro and walked to the Castro Art Mart where I watched and enjoyed good performances by drag king Mike Strapon and drag queens Lindsay Slowhands, Vendetta, and drag queen and hostess Dulce de Leche and browsed the vendor booths selling art. Rode Muni home, stopping at the West Portal Branch Library to use the restroom. Along the way I realized that I had had night mode on in Firefox, the default browser on my phone, and that this might have been part of the earlier ordering problem with the Sunset Squares and Square. Dinner at home with Patrick: pork fried rice with pineapple, green onions, yellow pepper, and brown rice; water. Patrick had a chocolate pudding left over from a lunch Uber Eats order. We watched The Sandman s1:e9 on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed and listened to an audiobook on Hoopla which I showed him how to set up. I washed dishes. Unloaded photos from my iPhone 12 mini. Uploaded photos to Flickr.

Staycation day 10 of 16. I had had insomnia for several hours last night, but Sleep Cycle app reported that I got 91% sleep quality. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, blueberries; water. Recently I have regularly been receiving random SMS messages or text messages from phone numbers and persons unknown to me, and I suspect that these are scams of some kind, probably automated. I deleted and blocked the first two occurrences. One that arrived today at 7:50 a.m. Pacific from 541-635-2858 said only, "who are you? How did you end up in my friends list?" The previous ones were similar in that they presented a vague opening for communication and from different phone numbers. I am documenting this here in case it helps anyone in the future. Midmorning snack: Patrick made peach streusel muffins. Patrick ate one; I ate two. More bedroom devices light mitigation with black gaff tape. Installed a new kitchen faucet sprayer; the old one still worked but it had a crack in it. Lunch: Patrick had chicken nuggets and waffles with butter and maple syrup from frozen. I had leftover brown fried rice with one chicken nugget. Water to drink. I napped. Dinner at home with Patrick: correction tonight: pizza di napoli with prosciutto and fresh arugula, water. Patrick also had a glass of red wine. I washed dishes. We watched The Sandman s1:e10 on Netflix instant watch then That's My Time with David Letterman: Sam Morril. Patrick went to bed.

Tue Sep 6, 2022

Staycation day 11 of 16. Insomnia again for several hours last night, but Sleep Cycle app reported that I got 83% sleep quality. Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, blueberries; water. Rode Muni to City Center to get MPX vaccine #1 of 2—uneventful. Walked to the Full House House. Walked to Alamo Square Park. Walked to Buena Vista Park. Rode Muni home. Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Squat and Gobble via Uber Eats: western cow burger and side kale caesar for Patrick, regular cow burger and side kale caesar for me, water for both. Afterwards we watched The Sandman s1:e11 (season finale) on Netflix instant watch then standup videos on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes.

Wed Sep 7, 2022

Staycation day 12 of 16. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and slivered almonds, diced peach; peach muffin; water. Stayed home today due to an eczema flare on my face that developed over the past few days. Napped. Late lunch: the remainder of my kale caesar from last night—not a full meal, but I ate more than usual yesterday. Water to drink. Dinner at home with Patrick: yellow coconut curry with cauliflower and shrimp, water. Dessert: pistachio ice cream. Afterwards we watched Severance s1:e5 on Apple TV+. I washed dishes. Patrick went to bed. I erased the entertainment computer and prepared it for giving to Sam. Late small meal: salad with caesar dressing and unroasted, unsalted pumpkin seeds.

Thu Sep 8, 2022

Staycation day 13 of 16. Ran in place while finishing watching Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool on Netflix instant watch then part of Jonathan Blow: Video Games and the Human Condition on YouTube via rubbermuck. Eczema flare recovery continues. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and slivered almonds, diced half banana; water. More light mitigation with black and white gaff tape. Lunch at home: leftover YCC from last night, water with squeeze of lime. Ate outside since it was warm and sunny. Recently I have had a terrible experience with Anker and a warranty return for a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. After submitting the required documentation I got no response. A few days later I escalated my request and was finally able to return my item. A few days later I received a motor coupling kit—clearly they sent me the wrong replacement item by accident. After mentioning this to them, they finally sent me the correct item without apology or explanation, but instead of it being new, as I had expected, it was "used - like new" in a previously opened package and missing the Anker velcro tie that normally accompanies it. Lots of calendar management and paperwork handling. Midafternoon snack: two malasadas that Patrick picked up while running errands with Sam. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Taboun via Uber Eats: chicken shish kabob plates, water. Afterwards we watched the Glass Onion official teaser trailer on YouTube then Must Watch Before THOR: LOVE & THUNDER | Recap of Every Thor & Guardians of the Galaxy MCU Movie on YouTube via Recap & Chill then Galadriel’s Entire Backstory Explained on YouTube via Looper then part of Thor: Love and Thunder on Disney+. I walked in place during part of it. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Late small meal: leftovers from tonight's dinner.

Pre-dinner drink with Patrick on the sidewalk at Swirl: one glass each of sangiovese. Dinner at Frances (3870 17th Street) with Patrick, Chris, and Nate. This was Chris and Nate's first visit to Frances. Patrick and Nate each had the $65 wine pairing. Chris and I each had a $19 glass of Poderi Colla nebbiolo. Later in the meal Chris also had a $18 glass of Piquentum teran. Josey Baker sourdough levain with salted butter: $6. Menu for the week of September 5: pickering pass oyster, charred tomatillo salsa and lime. yellow wax bean fritto, black garlic aioli, basil. cucumber salad, tarragon yogurt, smoked trout roe, puffed rice. Wine pairing: NV Lenoble PM/PN/CH Brut Prestige 'Intense,' Champagne, France. fried green tomatoes, banyuls vinegar, pickled tomato remoulade. wildflower campanelle, brulee tomato and beef strip ragu, horseradish. Wine pairing: 2019 Piquentum Teran, Buzet, Istria, Croatia. blackberry trifle, olive oil sponge, passion fruit curd, creme fraiche. Wine pairing: NV Fred Jerbis 'Vermut 25,' Friuli, Italy. We talked about SIRVA, vaccines, parents, health, pandemic practices, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, future travel, Oregon, Hawaii, how to stay in the same job for 21 years, and more. In the middle of our meal an upset unhoused person briefly interrupted the meals of all the diners in our parklet and left after a few tense minutes. Service by Desiree R was excellent. Rode UberX home. To bed early, resulting in biphasic sleep. Woke around midnight, then remained awake for about 90 minutes. Patrick also arose for a short time.

Sun Sep 11, 2022

Staycation day 16 of 16. Slept in. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted and slivered almonds, diced half banana; water. Lunch by myself at Viet Quan (415-682-8200, 1757 Taraval Street): #20 (well-done beef and rare beef noodle soup with ho fun), side of imperial roll, hot tea. At 12:45 p.m. on a Sunday this place was busy. I waited about 12 minutes and received the only two-top table; there is no counter seating. There was a misunderstanding about my order since I had also ordered a regular order of imperial rolls to go at the end of my meal, and it took some effort to resolve, but it didn't bother me. All was delicious, and I left satisfied and with the extra imperial rolls. People on Yelp complain about the somewhat higher prices, but they seemed normal San Francisco prices to me, and there isn't another Vietnamese restaurant nearby within walking distance so I think it's justified. At home Patrick ate the imperial rolls. He helped me with a project to finally move the charging station from the bedroom to the living room after we had rearranged furniture in the bedroom a few months ago. Dinner at home with Patrick: together we prepared lemony quinoa-brown-rice-corn linguine with arugula and proscuitto. Patrick washed most of the dishes. Afterwards we finished watching Church Basketball Player from Tennessee - Nate Bargatze: Comedy Central Presents - Full Special on YouTube via Comedy Central Stand-Up then we watched The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power s1:e3 on Amazon Prime Video then the Mandalorian Season 3 teaser. Patrick went to bed. I washed the remaining dishes.

Mon Sep 12, 2022

Lots of calendar management, including submitting requests for new vacation time. Rode UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Mount Zion. Walked to the doctor's office for a vaccine. Rode UCSF shuttle from Mount Zion to Parnassus. Lunch at desk: leftovers from last night, but for some reason I was able to eat only a little; it was too rich. Water to drink. Late snack: roasted corn off the cob from frozen, water.

Tue Sep 13, 2022

Realized that I had been using a power adapter that was too low-powered for my work 16-inch MacBook Pro, rearranged power adapters to resolve the problem. More house chores: emptied the paper shredder, vacuumed the small bedroom, began work on the pile of things to dispose or sell or give away. Patrick returned home from morning practice with Sam. Removed drywall anchors from a now-unused mounting and patched with spackling compound. Archived a document from the 1998 Chai Family Reunion. We each ate one at different times for a midmorning snack, mine with four ounces of milk. Lunch about 30 minutes apart: Patrick ate the remaining half of his sandwich and potato chips from yesterday. I had quinoa spaghetti with seasoned garlic-roasted roma tomatoes and fresh dill. Patrick had roasted the tomatoes a few days ago, but we hadn't used them yet. Water to drink. Walked to dinner at Lost and Found with Patrick: cocktails: mission dolores for Patrick, painted ladies for me. Birria tacos for Patrick, wagyu burger for me. We shared an order of garlic fries. Happy hour pricing gave us a few dollars off our bill. Patrick saved one taco for later. We could eat only half of the fries. Walked home. We watched Severance s1:e8 on Apple TV+. To bed early for both.
