UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mount Zion. Lab visit at Kaiser. Lunch at OPA Market: chicken schwarma wrap, with avocado, not spicy. I ate at the sole table outside. Service seemed very friendly. UCSF shuttle from Mount Zion to Laurel Heights. Eric, Kevin, and I rode Lyft to Mission Center Building. Drupal Users Group meeting. Walked to Church Street Station. Dinner at home with Patrick: linguine with shrimp and vegetables in marinara sauce with parmesan cheese, water. For dessert I have two blueberry muffins. Reviewed and edited old journal entries in the staged redesign of frankfarm.org. Found a legitimate use for the character entity &#8203;—aka zero width space—breaking long words like KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. The advantage over is that if you copy and paste the text it will not have dashes in it. And the text is still understandable with the break without a dash. The vole returned, and I again returned it to The Wood using an empty plant pot. Late snack: unsalted popcorn via a saucepan. Nightcap: vodka with Dr. Pepper, a drink that I found not very tasty.

Mon Mar 9, 2015

Had trouble sleeping last night; woke at 3:00 am and couldn't return to sleep for several hours. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with diced pink lady apple, cinnamon, soy milk. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Spent most of today on webform work for Joel. Met with Paula to discuss various issues. Lunch to go from The View Cafe: vietnamese-style avocado summer rolls with dipping sauce. Happened upon Kevin in the courtyard just about as he was finishing his meal and break. It was sunny but too cold, so I did not stay long outside. Kevin and I rode Muni 38L from Target to the Transbay Terminal then walked to Chapter Three for San Francisco Drupal Users Group. Zakiya Khabir, a recent new hire at Chapter Three, presented theming in Drupal 8. I encountered Jayson J, Alex K (Sunrun), Stefan T, and saw other familiar faces from afar. I met two others: James and Michael. Kevin and I each had a veggie slice of complimentary pizza. Afterwards I rode Muni home which in retrospect was a huge mistake. In Embarcadero Station the sign initially said an L train would arrive in 10 minutes, but I must have waited 15 or 20 minutes before one came because the train orders would change or the estimated arrival times wouldn't change even after several minutes. Once the train arrived I was lucky to get a seat. Within the next two stops, the train was already packed since an L had not arrived for a long time before. I got home around 9:00 pm—about an hour just for Muni. The entire ride I thought about how I should have taken Uber or Lyft or Sidecar. Late meal: chicken tikka masala with basmati rice. Patrick had ordered indian delivery for himself earlier in the evening.

(Drew's bread plate was taken before he was done with it.) I had a five-ounce filet medium with vegetables. Champagne to start. Drew brought two bottles of red wine. Lunch: ham, egg, and cheese on bagel, water. Upgraded OpenSSL on my iMac from "OpenSSL 0.9.8zc 15 Oct 2014" to "OpenSSL 1.0.2a 19 Mar 2015" by executing "openssl version; which openssl; brew update; brew install openssl; brew link --force openssl; hash -r; openssl version" then renaming the one at /usr/bin to something different and creating a symlink from the one at /usr/local/bin to /usr/bin. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken, bean, and cheese burrito for Patrick; grilled chicken breast, brown rice, and leftover salad for me. Resolved the browser bookmarks problem I encountered after installing Yosemite at work by using xmarks to restore from a cloud backup I didn't remember existed. Late meal: ramen with vegetables.

Sun Mar 22, 2015

Breakfast at home: a free sample of Chalk Hill Cookery sprouted buckwheat granola. I added soy milk and fresh blueberries. I thought it tasted terrible—the worst thing I have tasted in a long time—and washed it away in the sink after eating the blueberries. Fruit and nut granola with soy milk. Shopped online at bevmo.com. It was a miserable shopping experience. The sort picklist doesn't work—nothing happens when you select a new sort. Warning messages when forms are submitted incorrectly are presented in red text, but Bevmo's corporate colors are red and white, so the warning messages are very easy to miss. It takes a really long time—about 15 or 20 seconds—to add an item to your shopping cart. I started opening multiple tabs and performing separate shopping cart adds to work around this problem. The search autocomplete results appear too slowly to be useful. The top hit of a search for italian beer resulted in O'Douls non-alcoholic beer. A link in my shopping cart went to a page missing error page. Selecting the Live Chat feature did nothing; it didn't open a chat window, and it didn't take me to another page. The coupon code I entered and which was still valid gave an error: "The coupon code entered does not meet the requirement(s) for usage. Please check the condition(s) of the offer and try again." (I later used this same coupon successfully in person at the store.) Also, the system knows who I am and it knows that I have earned a discount on my next purchase, so it should automatically ask me if I want to use it at checkout but it doesn't. I printed my shopping list and abandoned my shopping cart. Before this experience I liked Bevmo! but now I'm inclined to never shop there again after this purchase. Met Danny at Dim Sum Club but was disappointed to find they were closed. I had gone by the hours in Yelp, and the restaurant did not seem to have their own website. We ate instead at Cafe GoLo. Danny had french toast with blueberries but took half to go. I had a spinach scramble roll. Complimentary amuse bouche of sweet potato tart and raspberry tart were a welcome touch. Water for both. I didn't want a large meal, and my sandwich was just the right size. Service was friendly and efficient—very good. Afterwards we returned to Dim Sum Club and had another meal: chinese donut noodle roll, bean curd roll with oyster sauce, rice porridge with donut, fried shrimp dumplings with mayo, curry samosa, bbq pork noodle roll, broccoli with oyster sauce, rice, fun guo, chicken feet with black bean sauce, salt and pepper deep-fried chicken wings, pork spare rib, durian dessert. All the food we ordered was delicious. We were pleasantly surprised by the presentation of the chicken wings which were split and spread at the end of the bone, something we hadn't seen before. I ordered baked bbq pork buns to go for Patrick. I especially liked the chinese donut noodle roll for its differences in textures: soft rice noodle on the outside and crispy donut on the inside. The service is awkward. Sometimes we were not understood properly, and it's hard to say whether this was a language issue or a noise issue. As one waiter attempted to rearrange tables for an incoming party the condiments tray sitting atop the cleavage formed from both tables fell to the floor and the glass hot sauce jar broke, throwing hot sauce everywhere on the floor. The mess was cleaned within minutes. Frequently deliverators did not know to which tables items were to be delivered. I feel it is worth going back, just don't expect much in terms of service. Also if $1 per person for tea that doesn't taste any different than the complimentary tea you get at any other Chinese restaurant bothers you, bring your own tea bags and ask for a pot of hot water. Danny refused tea when offered, but he was still charged for it. It was such a pittance that we didn't bother to complain. Afterwards I dropped the bbq pork buns in the car, and we visited The Octagon House. I knew it wasn't open today; we saw it from the outside. We briefly visited Alleyne Park then walked to Polk Street to window shop. We discovered a great furniture and antiques store called Flipp (stylized as Fl!pp) and chatted with the friendly salesperson who showed us how succulents grow in their garden. We admired the unusual (middle eastern?) architecture of Crunch Fitness (formerly the Alhambra Theater). Danny bought candy at The Candy Store. Afterwards we visited the frame shop, and I picked up a piece of artwork I left for service a few days ago. Danny rode the bus home; I took my artwork to work then bought beverages at Bevmo then went home. Helped Patrick cook and set up for a dinner party. Dinner at home with Patrick, Pat, Danny, Drew, Phil, Romy, Richard, Markus, Markus' mom: antipasti platter with three italian cheeses, salamis, pepperoncinis, toasts, crisps, barbecue-flavored pistachios, and artichoke tapenade; Patricia Wells's garlic family soup (aka creamy garlic and leek soup); Williams-Sonoma's snow pea and radish salad; Martha Rose Shulman's (The New York Times) chicken cacciatore; saffron rice; Acme olive bread and ciabatta; limoncello spritzers; fruit salad with mint glaze; dark chocolate gelato; and blood orange sorbetto. A fine day and evening.

Missed my bus by one minute, so I shopped at Arizmendi. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. Dessert from Arizmendi Bakery: we shared a slice of two-layer chocolate cake with salted caramel frosting. It's tasty and almost too rich, but we finished it. Something I did on the weekend—or maybe it was coincidence—caused my secondary local backup to fail. No time to troubleshoot it tonight. Primary local backup and cloud backup are both still working, so no worries. Pantry organizing.

Rode Sidecar to Shotwell Street: $14. Breakfast with PDDR: breakfast burrito. I rode with Phil and Drew to a Sonoma getaway weekend to visit Viansa Winery, Cline Cellars Vineyard and Winery, and stopping at Star West Ranch for a two-night stay. The others drove separately: Quyen, Dave, Nate, Chris, Richard, Michael. We all met Michael for the first time. We met the owners of Star West Ranch, checked in. Star West Ranch is a large and charming property filled with fine wood furniture, interesting architecture and objets d'art et de maison, bright colors, and pleasant garden spaces. We rented all three rooms/spaces for a total of (I think) at least 14 adult bedspaces. Rested. Dinner at the ranch: pork tenderloin, salad, two-layer lemon cake.

Returned to San Francisco and Shotwell House. We watched The November Man on television. Danny served us vietnamese noodle soup. I rode Sidecar shared ride home: $6 (and no shared ride).

Calendar management. Helped Paula with a question that was answered by the Wayback Machine. Helped Cindy with a question about keys for locks on computers. Calendar management. Linkchecking. Decided today I need to abandon Delicious for storing bookmarks. It doesn't seem to be under development anymore, and there's a weird problem when using the bookmarklet that causes it to unnecessarily pause for an unbearable amount of time when I'm typing text. My first thought for an alternate solution was Evernote even though I don't like it a lot. (I have lost data with it once and didn't have access to my data once because I misunderstood how it works.) But maybe I'll just store bookmarks in the browser and let Xmarks sync it. Calendar management. Followup on a problem with the Dell punchout in BearBuy. Linkchecking. Lunch: veggie california sandwich on multigrain with pickle slice. Experimenting with presentations in Apple Keynote. Stopped at Bryan's grocery briefly for 2 ounces of mexican blend spices for $6.99. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: tacos.
