Sun Feb 1, 2015

Breakfast at home: water; bran muffin; oatmeal with fresh, diced gala apple; cinnamon; unsweetened soy milk. Visited the de Young with Markus: Keith Haring: The Political Line. This was Markus' first visit to the de Young. We also visited the observation tower, the sculpture garden, and much of the regular exhibit halls. The Haring exhibit was pricey: $29. I was not that familiar with Haring's work and although I did not much enjoy the exhibition I was impressed by his ability to create his art essentially freehand and with celerity. 25-minute wait for Muni, so instead I rode Lyft home for about $9. Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: shrimp in indian curry sauce over leftover white steamed rice. Watched Star Trek: Voyager season 6 episode 9, The Voyager Conspiracy on Netflix instant watch with Patrick.

Mon Feb 2, 2015

Breakfast at home: an apple, two half pastries from arizmendi bakery: chocolate croissant, currant scone, water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Tried calling in to the sprint standup but no one answered. Organized stuff in the OSACA, software updates for the spare computer, confirmed that the scanner can scan to USB without the computer on, confirmed that the computer is not set to autostart in the bios, cleaned and organized (especially the computer equipment drawer), prepared unneeded devices for surplus and secure destruction, archived a staffmember photo, prepared toner cartridges for recycling, visited other offices on 9 to let everyone know I have returned from medical leave, met with a student to review antivirus and encryption requirements. Lunch at Palio by myself: romaine lettuce salad with feta, walnuts, pine nuts, dried cranberry, balsamic vinaigrette; half of a toasted caprese sandwich; water: about $10. Snack: some Carmelina's tortilla chips. The wait for Muni bus 66 was twice as long as it should have been, so I rode Lyft Line home: about $10 after $1 tip. Dinner at home with Patrick: I had greek chicken in pita. Patrick had leftover shrimp in indian curry sauce over capellini.

Rode UberPOOL to 444 Battery Street: $5 (!). The Punch Line with Nico Santos headlining and with Carla Clayy and one other comic whose name I didn't catch and host Casey Ley. Service by Kelly. Hilarous—so much laughing! Rode UberX home: $20.

Prepped other cdroms that were no longer needed for secure disposal. I helped Lucia confirm that she no longer had a problem printing pdf files with completed form fields. Sat Feb 14, 2015

Breakfast at home: chocolate muffin from Sunset Bakery, cafe (via Bialetti) au lait. Flowerpressing. Minor work because I only seemed to remember this task when at home: edited the tech intro page to add info about mobile devices and to update info about cuda (no longer requires vpn). Lunch at home: leftovers. Since our landlord recently hired a gardener to clear away overgrowth in our back yard, Patrick and I were inspired to do our own gardening and bought supplies at Sloat Garden Center. Nap. Rode UberPOOL to Shotwell Street. Dinner at Shotwell Street with Danny, Romy, Drew, Phil, Quyen, Dave: Phil prepared dinner: mustard brie with smoked salmon and crackers, spinach salad, filet mignon. Afterwards we attended Soundbox: Sticks and Stones at Davies Symphony Hall. We arrived at 8:15 pm for a 9:00 pm show, and there were no more seats. Drew tried to resolve the issue. We were told that it was clear that seating was not guaranteed, and the tickets indeed said that, but I found that the website did not mention this and so this fact might not be entirely clear to those receiving tickets from will call as we did. Also, Drew pointed out that people took all the seats from one table and moved them to another, and the event rep agreed they were not supposed to do that but that they did not have enough staff to police that kind of behavior. In the end, we simply walked out, not wanting to stand for what would probably be two hours (including waiting for the show to begin and then the show itself). A waste of $25 per ticket in our party of six. Thoroughly disappointed, we stopped at Smuggler's Cove for a few drinks, then returned to Shotwell Street for second dessert and more drinks. I rode UberPOOL home. I have been using UberPOOL lately, and it has been a favorable experience. The extra time required is not unbearable, the riders I shared with have been pleasant, and the price cannot be beat: $5 for anywhere in the city. I can't see how Uber is making money from it, so I expect UberPOOL prices to go up eventually. (I later logged in to my account on the Uber website and noticed that the $5 per ride is a special offer. Despite lots of bad press recently, I still find Uber to be the best taxi alternative service followed by Lyft then Sidecar.

Lunch at Thai Spice (415-775-4777, 1730 Polk St) with Patrick. In addition to chicken pad thai, we ordered a dish we rarely see: battered and deep-fried almond prawns. Frango a brasileira, moqueca de camarao, tiramisu cup, mozzarella sticks (6 pieces), free 2-liter bottle of Coca-Cola, I-think-complimentary breadsticks: $65.78. A bit pricey, but we had gotten tired of repeatedly ordering from the same places, so it was a worthwhile change.

We walked to Woodhouse Fish Company for lunch: cheddar crab melt and water for Paul, two-piece fish and chips for me, iced tea for me. Paul did some grocery shopping on his own in preparation for a bbq and a dinner party. I walked in the Castro. It was a pleasant, sunny day. I tried stopping at Super Duper for chocolate-dipped soft serve, but the line was too long and stuffy. Instead I got a scoop of caramel toffee crunch with wafer cone at Eureka. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with diced dried apricot, cinnamon, soy milk. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. We agreed to try it with Evernote, so I installed Evernote desktop and began bringing documents in then discovering a problem with entering tags. Prepped and sent a notice to Lei about a website staging for his review. At lunch I explored the back side of Laurel Village. It is mostly unpleasant, but I discovered that Rigolo has a single table outside the back door and since there are so few places with outdoor seating in the sun I decided to lunch there. A cheeseburger with a side salad and an iced tea cost about $20. Rather expensive for a pretty ordinary burger, I thought, but I didn't care. I also discovered that Cal-Mart has a few tables and chairs under an awning. Not in the sun, but another possibility. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with diced pear, cinnamon, unsweetened soy milk. Bought gas in Daly City. Took a wrong exit along the way. Drove with iPhone 6 Plus nav via Waze to 2025 Stierlin Court in Mountain View for the 2nd Accessibility Camp Bay Area. (To clarify: this is my first attendance at an Accessibility Camp Bay Area.) Many blind people are in attendance. This is the first time I witnessed live speech-to-text translation (captioning) displayed on a large screen for the audience. My four sessions: (1) Inclusive Usability in Neon Carrot with Jayne Schurick, (2) The 80/20 rule: Finding and fixing the Top 10 Accessibility Errors in Unite with Karl Groves, (3) Beyond Large Fonts: A Partially Sighted User's Perspective in Culture Club with Karo Caran, and (4) Getting Our Design Team To Walk The Walk in Neon Carrot with Judith Blankman. The day's sessions were bookended by a welcome address and closing remarks by the event's organizer Jennison Asuncion. Following Groves' session I realized that I lost that session's notes due to Evernote not synching the data correctly, which makes me unhappy. And which is ironic because I'm writing this day's journal notes in Evernote. Drove home, getting an automated car wash at the Valero on 495 Moffett. It's later now and I have switched to writing this day's journal notes in TextWrangler on my iMac at home. Today's events made me realize that Apple Notes, Notational Velocity / Simplenote, and Evernote have all eaten my data. Despite this fact, I still prefer Notational Velocity / Simplenote the most, but I also still don't fully trust any of them. Late snack: toasted raisin bagel and cream cheese. Will and Tom move to Los Angeles.
