Fri Aug 5, 2011

Breakfast: leftover hash browns, 2 eggs scrambled, toast, one pluot. Recently I resolved the You Don't Know Jack error "JackGame.exe has stopped working." In VMWare Fusion I gave Windows 7 1 CPU, 3072 MB (aka 3 GB) of RAM and turned on 3D graphics (aka Accelerate 3D Graphics). My iMac has only 4 GB of RAM so it was best to close all other Mac apps before trying to run You Don't Know Jack in this configuration in Fusion. Normally I can do everything I want to do in Windows 7 with only 1 GB of RAM but I guess most games require more memory. It was not necessary to disable Symantec Endpoint Protection. (I see now that notes I had made for my journal on July 16 would have helped me, but they had not yet been published.) Rode Muni to work. First day back to work in 3 weeks. Joel and I talked about Egypt. Archived website data to portable hard drives. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Met 1-on-1 with Eric: catching up. Office birthday lunch: Sammie made a fantastic toffee chocolate ginger bundt cake. Web edits for Carol. Answered a variety of computer and ICRD questions from students by email. Confirmed email migration was successful, sent thanks to Kraig K and others at ITS. Asked ITS how to control the spam firewall for a distribution group. Chatted briefly on the phone with Tina. Followup with Carol about web edits. Lisa showed me how to use MyExpense. I didn't think I would need to use it, but the reimbursement request I intended to file a number of weeks ago didn't get filed, and we had since switched over to using MyExpense. It took 30 minutes, and that was with Lisa's help. Met 1-on-1 with Eric: wireframing in Omnigraffle. Mobile / New Media / Web committee meeting: John G talked about IT-Forum meetings, we decided to try splitting the group, web accessibility. Created a hard drive image so that I could install Snow Leopard onto the white shared office laptop. (It has a broken DVD drive.) Chatted briefly on the phone with Tina. Rode Muni home. Patrick dropped off some of his stuff at my place. He is leaving his current living arrangement. If he doesn't find a roommate situation before the end of the month, he's moving back in, taking the second room as his space and paying rent and utilities. Dinner at home: bing cherries, mahi mahi (previously frozen I found out when I pulled the package from my fridge) with ginger and dill in a white wine reduction and fresh-squoze lemon; 2 corn on the cob. Dessert: warm hazelnut banana bread, french vanilla ice cream. Did some work for about 2 hours: site maintenance to push live some needed fixes.

Sat Aug 6, 2011

Breakfast at home: Grandma Goodie's honey nut granola, organic nonfat yogurt, fresh diced pink lady apple; one sliced plum; Oregon Chai chai tea latte. Smog check didn't pass. I tried to get repairs but the guy at the place I preferred worked only a half day today, gave up for now. Met Ben H to give him putty knives. Shopped for and booked airline tickets for my forthcoming trip to New York City. Late dinner at home: leftover veggie fried rice.

Sun Aug 7, 2011

Dessert: bing cherries. Baked They Won't Know Raspberry Coffee Cake from food.com. Shopped for accommodations for my forthcoming NYC trip.

Snack: seaweed. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home: leftover pasta, leftover chai tea latte.

Tue Aug 9, 2011

Pre-breakfast: bing cherries. Dropped the car off for maintenance. Rode Muni to work. Breakfast at the cafeteria: daily special: veggie egg scramble. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Solution: Re-enter the MCCA license key. Problem: Error "corrupt content from reliable source" while installing Adobe Flash in Windows 7. Solution: Wait until Adobe gets its act together. (It was a problem on their end.) Answered a question about email archiving for student KN. Followup with Scott N about his email address change. Pcard paperwork. Web team meeting: wireframes review. Lunch from Carmelina's: two veggie tacos. More listserv maintenance. Web edits for Shirin: city tours, orientation registration. Followup with ITS about a server-side mail filtering rules request I submitted before my medical leave—no action has been taken. Met with Joel, Sammie, and Lucia about new scanner hardware requirements. Supp app project work in Drupal all day. Left work late. Asked John K to investigate why web archiving isn't working for the UCSF Drupal mailing list. Small web edits for Shirin and Joel: orientation, application presentation. Muni and BART to PDDR. Dinner at PDDR with Danny, Drew, Phil, Romy. Met Nathan, a friend of Danny's. We celebrated Danny's 10-year anniversary of being in the United States. BART and Muni home lateish.

Thu Aug 11, 2011

Fri Aug 12, 2011

Rode Muni to work. Breakfast burrito at Carmelina's. Shuttle to Mission Bay. Realized that the calendar on my iPhone failed to sync properly and that my 9:00 AM meeting at Mission Bay was moved to 3:30 PM. Shuttle to Parnassus. Reviewed Photoshop comps from Robin. Long, unscheduled web team phone meeting: comps with Robin. Encountered Leslie and (I think it was) Bea walking to lunch, said hi. Lunch at Perilla: veggie rice plate. Lateish lunch: leftover veggie curry with rice. Ironed. Patrick had brought 3 pendant lamps with him. We decided to swap the Chinese lantern over the dining table for 2 of the pendant lamps, and I set it up. Cocktails with Patrick: dirty girl scouts. Sun Aug 14, 2011

Lunch: leftover stir fry with rice. Short nap. Snack with Patrick: raspberry coffee cake, green tea. Dinner at home with Patrick: conchiglioni with marinara sauce, bread and butter. Netflix instant watch: fast-forwarded through Spring Fever (boring) and briefly glanced at Of Cooks and Kung Fu (bad martial arts but possibly very funny in that you laugh at it) and Eddie Izzard: Unrepeatable (not as funny as his later works) before watching The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) which we both enjoyed.

Mon Aug 15, 2011

Breakfast: one plum, 2 slices of toast with Smart Balance Light. Unscheduled web team phone meeting: comps review. Reviewed the new Update from the Dean. Tue Aug 16, 2011

Weight training: yes no maybes. Breakfast at home with Patrick: Noah's bagels with cream cheese, one sliced nectarine and one sliced apple for me, Tazo Awake tea. Rode Muni to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. SCWG meeting. Met with Tran about encryption and a bluetooth mouse for the white shared office laptop. I decided today that the Logitech V470 just isn't working for me. The problem is that the bluetooth doesn't reconnect properly between restarts either to Windows 7 or Mac OS 10.6.8. I can get it to work once, and in OS X it sometimes reconnects properly; it is not consistent. This is disappointing, and I will next try the Apple Magic Mouse. Web team meeting. Reported a network folder sharing problem to ITS. Lunch: leftover udon noodle stir fry. Supp app project work in Drupal: provided more data to dentistry's screen regarding date-time sent, date-time of last login. Answered a question about archiving email for grad VV. Cleaned Patrick's iPhone which had a lot of dust in the connection port. Archived documents. Completed smog check paperwork. Found a case in which Alfred could not find something that Spotlight could. Tried to resolve it but failed. Late meal: leftover conchiglioni.

Wed Aug 17, 2011

Weight training: yes no maybes. Breakfast: toasted egg bagel with cream cheese. Rode Muni to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Followup with ITS about network shared folder permissions. Supp app project work in Drupal. Lots of purchasing research for scanners and multifunction devices. Edited the new update from the dean. Troubleshot slow behavior in PharmAdMIT 2012 for Joel and Sammie. Doesn't seem to be specific to PharmAdMIT, so I reported slow network behavior to ITS. More editing of the update from the dean. Checked with Rodney about where in AD to put students on leave and planning to return. Lunch at desk: leftover jambalaya. Lots of gathering of images for a photo tour for the new QBC website. Shuttled with Eric to Mission Bay. Meeting with Shuvo, Susie, Michael, and Eric. Thu Aug 18, 2011

Vacation day. Needed more of Cyberguys item 1151140 (18-compartment, translucent, plastic storage organizer with hinged, locking lid and 12 adjustable dividers, about 10.5" x 7" x 1.75") but they don't sell it anymore. The closest thing I could find was fabric.com item NR-583 which appears to be the same as c2f.com item ABN-4006AB (c2f says this item has UPC/EAN 071617040024) which appears to be the same as amazon.com ASIN B001U30D80. The image provided is not identical, but from the description it must be identical. It feels like this item is being discontinued or might remain hard to find, so I bought the rest that fabric.com had left in stock. Tried mounting the giant mirror that Patrick brought with him, didn't get it right. Taking a break from it for now. Brunch with Patrick: bagels with cream cheese, leftover jambalaya, hot water. Nap. Snack with Patrick: one sliced pink lady apple. Tina flew in to SFO this afternoon. We picked her up at Little Star in the Mission then drove back home where we ate tortilla chips with hummus and the Little Star pizza (one Little Star, one veggie). Dessert: spoons of chocolate-cinnamon ganache, pistachio biscotti with lemon glaze, Firelit coffee liqueur (batch #1, Blue Bottle). Emergency laundry activities.

Fri Aug 19, 2011

Vacation day. Brunch at Criolla Restaurant with Tina and Patrick. Patrick went on about his day. Tina and I drove to Santa Cruz. On the way we stopped at the pebble beach at Bean Hollow State Park. Warm and sunny in Santa Cruz. We got ice cream at the Penny Ice Creamery, which will turn 1 year old next Wednesday. I had burnt cinnamon. Tina had an affogato with burnt cinnamon. The cinnamon wasn't very strong and the base isn't very rich. It's good but not great ice cream. Very friendly and accommodating service. Met with Matt on the Garden Mall, he shopped for vinyl, and we windowshopped. We drove separately to Col and Pedro's. Col wasn't home yet, and so we waited a bit until she showed. Dinner at Main Street Garden. Col started the hot tub but it was not working properly.

Sat Aug 20, 2011

Grocery shopping at a nearby, great, small market and pastry-buying at Gayle's with Col and Tina. (Nite owl Matt usually sleeps in.) Breakfast at Col and Pedro's: grapes, cherries, egg scramble, assorted pastries, toast. We walked through Capitola, including the charming river walk. Nap. Matt and Tina drove south. I left Col and Pedro's and drove from Capitola to the Honmas in Sunnyvale: dropped off a birthday gift and a 5-inch princess cake and assorted pastries from Gayle's (1 croissant, 1 chocolatine, 1 christopher bun, 1 downtowner sugar, 1 crocodile slice), played War (card game) with the kids for a bit. Car wash at Valero near their old place. Stopped at IKEA for a few items and an early dinner: greek salad, spinach and cheese crepes, water. Drove home. Dinner #2: leftover pizza from Little Star, hot water. Watched Shaun of the Dead (2004) on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Sun Aug 21, 2011

Met Danny at Powell Street Station. We walked to Pho Tan Hoa and had breakfast. Among other things, we talked about Denmark. Clothes shopping: H&M kids Westfield, abercrombie, Zara kids and men on Post Street, H&M kids on Powell (new to me), Levi's, Louis Vuitton. My only clothing purchase today: a checkered sweater from H&M kids, size 10-12. Quick snack at Contraband. I stopped in the spa to rest for a bit, then ran a quick errand at Cala Foods for Phil. Danny gave me a great, quick shoulder massage. I rode Muni 19 Polk to SoMa, stopped in at Gama-Go but didn't buy anything, stopped in at Mister S Leather and bought a few things. I'd never been in this store in this location before and found it amazingly comfortable with excellent service. Walked to Bar Agricole, where Trudy, Chris, and Zack threw Brian and Kelly's west coast engagement party before their forthcoming gay marriage in NYC on Labor day weekend, which I shall be attending. Caught up with many I hadn't seen in ages. Met or encountered Jesse, Linda and Drew, Fred and Brandy, Zihan (sp?), Simma, Tim C, Jase and Travis, Tamara, Craig, Steve, Kevin, Edward and Sean. Afterwards some of us went to Warakubune for sushi, met Renato.

Followup with Tran about iTunes launch problem for Joel. Web team meeting. Lunch: "leftover" pasta from yesterday. Announced a call to the office for secure media disposal. Notified the office about the white shared office laptop now has Snow Leopard (10.6) and Windows 7, new mice forthcoming. Research for scanner purchases. Very frustrated with manufacturers of multifunction devices because they all tell you the print speed but none of them tell you how fast these devices scan and this is an important factor in my purchase decision. Dinner at home with Patrick: tofu glazed in hoisin sauce with green onions and organic squash. Dessert: chocolate-cinnamon ganache, banana bread. Using mail.ucsf.edu is now significantly faster than starting and using Outlook 2011. I'm still eagerly awaiting the death of Microsoft Office.

Wed Aug 24, 2011

Breakfast: banana bread, water. Rode Muni to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Research for scanner purchases. Management activities. We talked mostly about New York City and iPhones. Cindy and I rode the shuttle back to Parnassus. Along the way back to the office we played with a brand new touchscreen map in the hospital. Fri Aug 26, 2011

Fast panda bowl lunch from Panda Express: chow mein noodles, garlic chicken. My fortune: Your ability for accomplishment will follow with success. Dinner at Colibri Mexican Bistro (415-440-2737, 438 Geary Street, San Francisco, California, USA) with Will: 3 kinds of salsa, guacamole with all-you-can-eat tortillas. I had a margarita con fruta (pomegranate, "flavored margarita with muddled fresh fruit, lime juice, sugar and huizache tequila"); kebobs with shrimp, scallops, and salmon with a timbale of rice and vegetables. Will had a margarita corzo ("corzo blanco, flavors of tropical fruit and peppery spice harmoniously blended to create a delicate finish"); pig chili rellano ("fire-roasted poblano pepper stuffed with your choice of vegetables and cheese or carnitas and chicharron, both served over a black bean sauce"). Too full for dessert.

Watched Season 6 Episode 12 Blink of an Eye of Star Trek: Voyager on Netflix instant watch. Uninstalled Sophos Anti-virus on my iMac. Encountered an error while attempting to install SEP: "Installer[316] Installation check failure. Symantec Endpoint Protection can't be installed on this computer.. An error occurred while running the InstallationCheck tool for Symantec Endpoint Protection. Try running the tool again.." At first I tried repairing disk permissions but that did not fix the problem. The solution that worked for me was to delete the application called The Unarchiver which somehow doesn't unzip the archive properly, redownload the zip file, then double-click it to get the installer, then install. Late snack: small bowl of corn chips, one 3.0-oz bag of organic microwave popcorn.
