Thu Mar 1, 2018
Breakfast: a banana and a pear. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Laurel Heights. Final prep then delivery of the Update from the Dean html email via Mailchimp. Lunch at Beautifull!: two small sides: caesar kale salad, thai udon noodles. Listened to part of today's Town Hall. Microsite and task followup. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus with Eric. Drupal Users Group meeting. I showed and talked for about 30 minutes about the identity retheme project I had worked on for the past 26 months. People seemed to like it. Errand: Walgreens. Rode Uber Pool home. Met someone from Nextdoor to sell a five-drawer, black dresser that Patrick had owned since 2011. An upstairs neighbor had moved his car from the driveway only moments before the buyer arrived—whew! Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick had pretzel rods and chicken noodle soup restored from frozen from Bryan's Grocery. I had pretzel rods and leftover five-spice noodle soup from yesterday with western mixed greens that we needed to use before they went bad. First day of using iPhone X went well. The only problems I noticed so far is that (a) in (Notification Center?) when I have a lot of items in Calendar it shows some blank lines or blank gaps in between calendar items and (b) Siri activates but doesn't respond after being given a command. Clicking the microphone in Safari to initiate a search by voice works, however. Watched part of Spiderman: Homecoming on Netflix DVD with Patrick.
Fri Mar 2, 2018

Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Great India Restaurant, which I ordered on the way home via delivery.com: navrattan korma, chicken tikka kabab, rice pulao, fruit rasmalai: $40.57 after a 15% tip. Finished watching Spiderman: Homecoming on Netflix DVD with Patrick.
Sat Mar 3, 2018
Walked to breakfast at New Taraval Cafe with Patrick: coffees and water; pancakes, eggs, and bacon for Patrick; two eggs scrambled easy with potatoes and wheat toast for me; small fruit plate to share. Bought some noodles at an Asian grocery on the way home. Sold my Topeak Joe Blow Pro bicycle pump for $45 to someone via Craigslist. Lunch: leftovers. Watched Superstore s3:e13 on Hulu Base Plan with Patrick. Helped Patrick change from his iPhone 6 to a new iPhone 8 purchased via Johnson. Reviewed Hearst Castle photos with Patrick. Dinner at home with Patrick: salad and delivery from Mozzarella di Bufala: mushroom and sausage pizza. The delivery was initially estimated to be 60 to 70 minutes, and later this became 75 to 85 minutes. It was delivered exactly at 85 minutes, and the pizza was barely warm. Very disappointing. Watched Star Trek: Discovery s1:e11 on CBS All Access with Patrick.
Sun Mar 4, 2018
Pre-brunch: half an apple. Rode UberX to the Tenderloin. Met Danny for brunch at Rambler, adjacent to Hotel Zeppelin. Danny had smoked salmon toast with water, I had a croissant breakfast sandwich (no bacon) with coffee and cream. Afterwards we did some light shopping in Union Square and walked to Recharge Medical. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Met someone via Craigslist to sell some redwood planters that we weren't using. Chatted briefly with upstairs neighbor UN while tending to some gardening in front of the house. Chatted with upstairs neighbor JB to resolve an unfortunate issue that arose ultimately due to a lack of communication. Dinner at home with Patrick: I helped wash vegetables, and he cooked: angel hair pasta with grilled vegetables and a slice of bread, Alta Palla. Watched the Oscars with Patrick on abc.com. Dessert: two small pieces of dark chocolate.
Mon Mar 5, 2018
Breakfast at home: a pear. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Transit was terrible today and took me 75 minutes to get to work. I picked the wrong week to stop using Uber. Since I got to work pretty late I decided to skip lunch. In the morning I worked on microsite tasks for Wells Lab, Craik Lab, and NMR. In the afternoon I worked on orgchart changes due to Don K's title change from Associate Dean of Student and Curricular Affairs to Associate Dean. I also worked on resolving a lot of styling issues. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs polenta with sauteed spring vegetables and fried eggs, san pell. Dessert: one fig bar each, small pieces of dark chocolate. I helped Patrick select some iOS games for his iPhone 8 from ones I have place in the past.
Tue Mar 6, 2018
Breakfast at home: granola with milk and yogurt and diced granny smith apple. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. 1-on-1 with Eric. Completed new tasks related to configging permissions for Zoraida and altering content following Don K's title change. Lunch at desk: leftover pasta with vegetables. Afternoon snack: two mandarins. Wed Mar 7, 2018
Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Breakfast from The View Cafe: egg and cheddar on english muffin, coffee with half and half. Sprint standup. Spent the day inserting helvetica neue webfonts and backporting html email template improvements learned on the latest UFD to the BTS Beat template. Lunch: two mandarins. Rode Uber Pool Express to Noe Valley. Dinner at Uma Casa with Patrick. Patrick had discovered this place after encountering it on a walk in the neighborhood with his mom and after seeing its chef on a television show. We aren't aware of many Portuguese restaurants in San Francisco, and I agreed we should try it. We had the three-course $33 tasting menu. San pell. Appetizers: pasteis de bacalhau (salt cod and potato fritters , cilantro aioli) for Patrick, caldo verde (chicken broth , potato, linguiça, collard greens, olive oil) for me. The fritters are the consistency of mashed potatoes underneath a crisp crust we think was flour-based—tasty, if a bit salty. I enjoyed the caldo verde which had delicious slices of linguiça in a rich broth with potato chunks and chiffonade of collard greens. These were paired with Portugal Ramos Louiero Vinho Verde 2015, which we liked a lot. Entrees: carne de porco a alentejana (braised pork shoulder, clams, linguiça, tomato-wine sauce, fingerling potatoes, cilantro) for Patrick, bacalhau a gomes de sa (salt cod casserole, potatoes, onion, egg, olive crumble, parsley aioli, olive oil) for me. My casserole turned out to be way too salty for me. It seems silly now, but I didn't know salt cod would be so salty. The waiter offered to exchange it and suggested the frango piri-piri (grilled half mary's chicken, spicy pepper glaze, french fries, baby kale salad) which I had declined earlier, saying they could go light on the spicy glaze. I assented. The chicken was still too spicy for me, but I ate some of it and ate all the accompanying fries. The plate included a side of greens that were heavily vinaigretted, which I avoided because of my angular cheilitis. The entrees were paired with Quinta de Chocopahla Castelao Lisboa 2015, which we also liked. Desserts: pastel de nata (portuguese custard tart) for Patrick, sorvete de maracuja (passion fruit sorbet) for me—both delicious. Desserts were paired with Sandeman Founder's Reserve Ruby (Douro), which we liked. $139.56 before a $30 tip—my gratitude for the entree exchange. Not a great meal for me, but Patrick enjoyed it. The wine choices in the pairings were excellent, though, and seemed to be a great value for the price. Rode UberX to the Castro with Patrick. We checked out Beaux, which was open but empty. Watched mostly rare videos from the 1970s and 1980s at Midnight Sun. We rode UberX home. Updated my iPad Pro to iOS 11.
Thu Mar 8, 2018
No apparent problems with the iOS 11 upgrade on the iPad Pro. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Breakfast from The View Cafe: plain bagel, toasted, with cream cheese; V8: $2.90. Sprint standup. Troubleshot with Eric problems I had with seeing biophysics on local dev. We got part way and then gave up trying to get content images to appear correctly. He also helped me resolve a problem that Katherine K had reported about being unable to create a new job posting. (We believe that she was accidentally on the wrong site when doing so.) I initiated a message with Susan K to see if they wanted to use our Email on Acid account. Styling fixes. Worked with Eric to resolve some long-standing tasks. Lunch at Beautifull!: kale salad, lemon-dill potatoes, water from my water bottle. Encountered Michael C on his way to lunch, chatted briefly. More task followup. Rode Uber Pool Express home. On the way I began watching The Ray Bradbury Theater, and I noticed an insect crawling on my leg, so the driver stopped the car and I let the insect out. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs pasta with creamy lentils and pecorino, Alta Palla, red wine.
Fri Mar 9, 2018
Breakfast at home with Patrick: diced asparagus scramble, half english muffin with butter, one hash brown, 6 ounces of orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. HTML email template revision and testing all day, including resolving retina aka hi-res aka hi-dpi image problems. The fix in Mailchimp is to manually set the width to be the desired pixel width (in our case, either 480 or 220 or 144 pixels wide) and set the height value to "auto", making sure that it sticks in Mailchimp. Lunch: two slices of Arizmendi pizza that Michelle had brought to share. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs classic burger bundle (cow burgers and french fries), red wine.
Sat Mar 10, 2018
Slept in. Rode UberX to Chinatown with Patrick. Brunch at China Live, our first time here. Not very crowded at 11:00 am on a Saturday. Our server was Tim/Timothy. Tea: 8 Treasure Tea (lotus seed, longan, jasmine pearl, hawthorne, goji, jujubee date, rosebud and rock sugar, $15 for a pot). We shared four starters: betelnut minced chicken lettuce cup ($18), Shan Dong shui jiao water dumplings, dipping sauce (Chinese New Year's red dumplings with scallop, shrimp, and pea tendrils, $16), Peking duck with kumquat glaze, traditional condiments in sesame pockets ($14 for 3 pockets), char siu pork crunch baked bun ($10 for 3 buns). Dessert: we shared two: coconut-rose cream roll ($8), banana and Valrhona Kidavoa chocolate cream puff ($8). Meal total: $100.43 before a $20 tip. Service was mostly very good. The dining area and chef stations are exquisite and luxurious. There were a lot of things on the menu that interested us but as we were only two diners it was hard to try everything we wanted. Patrick was impressed by the lettuce cups which were very fresh and all about the same size and seemed to have been neatly trimmed by craft scissors. The dipping sauce for the dumplings was spicy and subtlely smoky at the same time. The Peking duck pockets were my favorite. They were preassembled with everything you needed already inside, and the crunchy sesame pockets provided a new twist in place of the traditional soft bun. The baked buns were delicious but not that much different than you would get for much less money elsewhere. In the marketplace for myself I bought a youth medium Bad Pickles t-shirt design printed on a bright red t-shirt manufactured by Gilden that said "I'm all that and dim sum," and we also bought two five-spice chocolate chip cookies for his mom: 10% off your purchases with dining receipt. Afterwards we tried to attend Year of the Dog: A Lunar New Year Art Pop-up at the Chinese Cultural Center on floor 3 in the Hilton, but at 12:45 pm we found it closed for a lunch break from 12:30 to 1:30 and didn't want to wait 45 minutes for it. We walked to Embarcadero Station and rode a J train to 16th and Church then walked to his mom's, encountering Kerry on our way in. He was off to Whole Foods to get ingredients for dinner. We said hello to the dog Cafecito and then visited with his mom for about an hour. Walked to the Castro to pick up a few photos that Patrick had printed at Walgreens, then rode Muni home. We had encountered some light rain along the way. We didn't have umbrellas, but it was tolerable. At home, house chores: vacuuming, fertilized the orchids. Prepared to file taxes. Troubleshot problems with our Brother MFC-845cw inkjet all-in-one printer: paper jam, unable to print 30, and unable to print 50. My attempts to resolve the problem failed. The scanner still works as expected, though. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs coconut curry with cauliflower and almonds, red wine, sparkling water. Watched Star Trek: Discovery s1:e15 then After Trek #114 on CBS All Access with Patrick. We both very much enjoyed the season finale and the entire first season. Great job all around, Discovery crew!

Spent the rest of the day completing taxes, sitting outside either in the sun or the shade. Snack: microwave popcorn with cheese powder, iced tea. Helped Joel by telephone with a question about VLOOKUP in Excel. Agreed to join the Faculty/Lab Policy Working Group for Web Governance committee. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Lemonade via Uber Eats. The delivery person forgot our drinks; Uber Eats gave me an instant refund in the app. Folded laundry that Patrick had washed earlier. Ordered new UCSF business cards. Did more tax work. Web maintenance: Tina's site. Updated Grav and plugins and themes, resolved a problem in which www was not redirecting to no-www as expected. Troubleshot and resolved a problem with guest wifi. Upgraded my router's firmware. Installed the latest version of rsync. Updated Grav locally for Corinna's site and found that it mildly broke some things, so I backtracked to a previous state and pushed live some updates that didn't break things.
Tue Mar 13, 2018
Ceiling and window leak in the small bedroom returns. Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs, sausage patty, hash brown, toast with butter, 6 ounces of orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Continued microsites work: Wells Lab content draft in situ edit. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion. Lunch at Yum Yum Hunan: sweet and sour chicken with vegetables, egg roll, hot and sour soup, brown rice, hot tea: $15 after a $3 tip. Walked back to UCSF Laurel Heights. 1-on-1 with Eric including performance evaluation review which went well. Microsites work: Wells and Craik content edits, working with Levi on some edits. Stopped at Wine Impressions. Rode Uber Pool to 15th Avenue House. It's my first visit to PDDR's new place. A new Resto dining table is in place. The place is large and beautiful. I toured both floors with Wayne, Paul, and Phil. The stairwell walls got marked by the delivery of a Chinese wardrobe. Everything else is pretty much pristine. Water fixtures are Grohe. Bath porcelein is Duravit. Some packed boxes remain, and it will take a few weeks to get further settled. Dinner by Danny: pho ga. Phil also got Popeye's chicken. I brought two bottles of Schramsberg: blanc de noir and brut rose. Paul brought a cake from Whole Foods: berry chantilly, which we enjoyed with a 2013 late harvest zinfandel. In attendance: Danny, Romy, Drew, Phil, Wayne, Paul, Jesse, and me. Wayne gave Paul and me rides home.

Lots of task followup. Styling work. Snack: fortune cookie from yesterday's lunch: A bold attempt is half of success. Rode Uber Pool Express home. I prepared dinner: Good Eggs teriyaki chicken bowl with spring vegetables and miso sauce. We liked this dish. The carrots and snap peas provided a crunchy contrast to the softer sweet potato rounds and chunks of chicken. A tasty dish. Repaired a splinter on the edge of the lid of our Oxo compost bin with some heavy sandpaper. Emptied compost, recycling, and trash. Gathered snail mail.
Thu Mar 15, 2018

Sat Mar 17, 2018
Pre-brunch: an apple. Sam picked up Patrick and me. We drove to Mom Ryan and Kerry's place and picked them up. Brunch at Yank Sing Rincon Center. Afterwards we returned to Mom Ryan and Kerry's place and stayed for a while. Sam drove us home. I overslept while taking a nap. Late dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. I also nearly ate some minestrone soup from frozen from Bryan's but it didn't smell right (too briny), so I didn't eat it. Watched Superstore s3:e15 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Sugru projects completed curing—success. Unloaded today's photos from my iPhone X and shared them with Patrick. Shopped online for a television cabinet or console. Late snack: chicken and dumplings soup from a can. Recently I determined with help from the internet that when I'm in the dark and I attempt to use FaceID to unlock my iPhone X and it fails to unlock it's usually because I'm holding the phone too close to my face.
Sun Mar 18, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs, hash brown, english muffin with butter, sausage patty. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. 1-on-1 with Eric. Logo decisions followup meeting with Eric and Susie. Microsites and styling work. Asana task followup. For lunch I had planned to eat at Parnassus before an errand, but I stopped at Suite 420 to pick up my business card order which had been delivered there I think because of the purchasing codes I used which likely still are attached to Susie's old office. I encountered the 420 staff having an employee appreciation lunch, and they had some leftover food from Pluto's which they essentially begged me to take, so I did and I ate that before heading to Parnassus: mozzarella cheese sandwich, mac and cheese. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Errand: the bank. Worked in Kalmanovitz Library the rest of the day. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs mezze platter with turmeric chicken and spring vegetables, san pell.

Cleaned in the bathroom. A short while later the bathroom medicine cabinet shelf failed again, and I don't know why. The cams I installed seemed to hold when they were installed, and a small disaster later ensued. (A roll of toilet paper fell in the toilet, q-tips fell in the sink, and candles in glass holders fell to the floor (but somehow did not break).)

Small plates to share: sigara boregi (fillo dough stuffed with potatoes, feta cheese, parsley and a touch of black pepper), peynirli karides(prawns sauteed with tomatoes and garlic in pepperoncini sauce and topped with feta cheese), dolma (grape leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts and currants, cooked in olive oil), cevizli ezme (walnuts, Turkish red pepper paste, tomato paste, fresh garlic, olive oil, and cumin), haydari (cucumbers, mint, and dill with creamy thick garlic yogurt), piyaz (white beans, onions, tomatoes, parsley, black olives, wine vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil). We ordered perhaps one or two plates too many and had leftovers to take home. Rode UberX home with Patrick. Tried for the third time to repair the bathroom cabinet but ended up only destroying more furniture cam locks and decided that it is unfixable; we'll just buy a new bathroom cabinet. Shopped online for a new bathroom cabinet.

The plan is to eventually abandon CrashPlan Home and keep iDrive and Time Machine with two local backups and one cloud backup.
