Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs with scallions, hash browns, ciabatta with butter, side of yogurt with mandarin orange slices and cinnamon, hot earl gray tea with milk. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Styling work for over half of the day: make accordion open and close transitions smoother. Lunch at Picnix: vietnamese egg rolls special with rice noodles and salad greens, lemon sparkling mineral water. Linkchecking with Total Validator Pro. Rode Uber Pool Express home. My repaired headphones arrived today from fixheadphones.com. They seem to work fine, and I have a 90-day warranty for the repair. Dinner at home with Patrick: meyer lemon chicken with butternut squash and salad, san pell, white wine. Dessert: Whole Foods fantasy cheesecake. Patrick and I took typing tests on the web just for fun. He is surprisingly fast for using only his two index fingers. Continued playing The Room: Old Sins with Patrick, exploring The Curiosity Room. Gathered tax documents. Continued troubleshooting and repair of the remote control for the Logitech Z906 speaker system from January 28 last month. This time I opened the remote and inserted enough felt padding to make it work more reliably, even if the buttons felt a little stiff. It seems to work better now.

Today I learned after receiving help from their support team how to change the default stylesheet for results in Total Validator Pro (aka TotalValidator Pro): edit the results.css file in the application folder. To find the application folder, open Total Validator Pro, then select Help > About, then select the Open button on the line that says Install. For me in macOS 10.12.6 Sierra, the results.css file was found in "/Applications/TotalValidatorPro.app/Contents/Resources/Java/images". (If you had found ~/Documents/TotalValidatorTool/images/results.css, that is the wrong file to edit.) I had wanted to make the font size larger, so adding font-size:1.15em to the body element did it. Breakfast: one banana, one pint of hot water. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Deleted lots of old, unpublished content from all our sites to help with linkchecking. Lunch at Starbucks: flat white, chicken wrap protein box with cucumber slices. Microsite work: revisited Desai pubs at KK's request. Continued reading from Richard Rutter's Web Typography (PDF version). Rode Uber Pool Express to the Mission. Met Patrick at Bear and Bull for drinks then dinner and a movie at Alamo Drafthouse New Mission: Call Me By Your Name. Pre-film drinks: turkey in the coop for Patrick, shanghai bastard for me. In the theatre: beer for Patrick, little gem salad but with a different dressing than they normally use at Patrick's request, fennel sausage pizza. Patrick also received a coupon for a free snack as part of his movie theatre membership, so we also got a large bowl of popcorn. My receipt for the bar portion said our server's name was Bull. Rode UberX home.

Sat Feb 3, 2018

Slept in. Breakfast at home with Patrick: yogurt with diced apple, pecans, and honey; 8 ounces of orange juice. Cut my hair, showered. Nap. Cut my hair again, resolving some issues I missed fixing the first time around. Today Patrick made four loaves of New Orleans French bread using a recipe from Tom Fitzmorris' Hungry Town, and it came out pretty well. I walked/hiked to Grand View Park, stayed a while, then returned stopping at Twisted along the way. Watched part of Christopher and His Kind on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover pasta, spinach salad with roasted scallion dressing, Patrick's french bread with butter, Alta Palla, white wine. Dessert: we split one Twisted chocolate-glazed donut filled with bavarian cream. Changed the last of three bike registrations to Grant. Continued playing The Room: Old Sins with Patrick, completing The Study and exploring The Maritime Room. Unloaded photos from my phone, filed paperwork.

Slept in. Rode UberX with Patrick to Mom Ryan's, picked her up, then continued in the same ride to Hayes Valley. The three of us saw Preservation Hall Jazz Band at SFJAZZ's Miner Auditorium for what I think Randall Cline said was SFJAZZ's first 11:00 am performance ever and the last of five PHJB performances following the 2018 gala opening where they received the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award. We sat in left terrace row TH seats 17, 19, and 21. They played for about 90 minutes with no intermission. Musicians: Ben Jaffe, Charlie Gabriel, Clint Maedgen, Ronell Johnson, Walter Harris, Branden Lewis, and Kyle Roussel. Near the end they invited a Latin band to join them for a few numbers. Ben Jaffe said it was the band's 50th year playing in San Francisco. We had a great time. Tickets were $80 each. Afterwards we walked to lunch at Lers Ros Thai: crab roll cakes to start, prawns asparagus with steamed white rice and thai iced tea for Mom Ryan, lek tom yum and thai iced tea for Patrick, nuer pad pak with steamed white rice and thai iced coffee for me. Water all around. $80.07 before a $13 tip. Rode Lyft home, dropping off Mom Ryan along the way. Note: Lyft handled a multiple destination trip perfectly whereas Uber did not show the first destination correctly to the driver even though it was specified correctly in Patrick's phone. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: bone-in pork chops with French Market spices from Spice Ace, Patrick's french bread and butter, san pell, white wine. Afterwards we watched Superstore s3:e12 (Groundhog Day) while eating dessert: chocolate cake from the freezer. Continued playing The Room: Old Sins with Patrick, completing The Curiosity Room and exploring The Garden. So satisfying. Resolved a problem in which I am prompted with "Enter passphrase for key" when attempting to execute git pull or other git commands or when attempting to push journal updates to Bluehost. I thought I had found a solution to this two days ago, but that solution lasts only for your current session. I found a new solution today that seems to work better in a Stack Overflow solution called "SSH Key - Still asking for password and passphrase" asked by HelloWorld. The answer that worked for me was the one given by ChrisJF on Jan 5 '17 at 18:51. I don't understand why this came up for me only now, though. In any case it seems to be fixed for now. Tried and failed setting up the Switch Control accessibility feature so that I can control the MacBook Air from my iPhone 6 Plus for media server purposes; Apple's instructions were too hard to figure out. Installed VNC Viewer for iOS and got it working easy enough, but it's too cumbersome for our needs.

Mon Feb 5, 2018

Breakfast at home: leftovers from yesterday. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Listserv work: added an alum to the jobs listserv. Followup with IT about the iMac reimage. Styling work: removed unneeded code that was causing linkcheck errors. Sprint standup. Restarted very old OWASP online training: Security Awareness and Software Development Lifecycle Project (SDLP). Helped Katherine K via WebEx with getting started with Slack and with replacing Tejal's CV on the Desai Lab site. Lunch: sushi to go from The View Cafe. Letterhead work for JoAnne W. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Nap. Late dinner and Emery's birthday at Smokestack at Magnolia Brewery organized by Tim C and Andy M. Rode Uber Pool Express home.

Lunch at Picnix: vietnamese chicken sandwich, watermelon slice, Crystal Geyser lime: about $13 before a $1 tip. Continued and completed OWASP online training: Security Awareness and Software Development Lifecycle Project (SDLP). Content work for JWG: Student Profiles. Filed a possible bug with square crops. Rode Uber Pool Express to the Mission. Met Patrick at Alamo Drafthouse New Mission for The Shape of Water. We enjoyed the film. Paloma cocktail for me, Turkey in the Coop for Patrick, popcorn, fried flounder sandwich (which was difficult to eat because it was so large). Rode UberX home.

Wed Feb 7, 2018

Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Parnassus. Breakfast from The View Cafe: bacon and egg on croissant, Cafe Verona with half and half. Sprint standup. Delivered list of accomplishments to Eric for forthcoming annual performance review. Resolved for Paula and Eric a display problem with code that Lemonly provided to us: a hidden character was embedded in the source and revealed itself only in certain browser-platform combinations. Walked to lunch at Sqwers Izakaya and Sushi Bar: two-item bento with chicken teriyaki and gyoza, water. The gyoza was lukewarm and seemed like it had been prepared about an hour or more beforehand, but I did not complain about it. $13. Walked back to work. Lots of task followup. Encountered a disastrous problem with Box Sync and had to log in to the website and dig files out of the trash. Met with Eric: mailing list updates. Rode Uber Pool Express home while continuing to watch My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman: Barack Obama which I started a week or two ago and neglected to mention then. Dinner at home with Patrick: roasted chicken breast with farro and golden beets, white wine, san pell. Finished watching Christopher and His Kind on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Organized Box files and strategized synced folders.

Met with Eric: BTS Beat mailing list work. Followup with Kim D about editor access for Medication Outcomes Center. Followup with Marissa L, Alma A, and Yvonne M about digital letterhead templates. Calendar management. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs parsley pesto pasta with chickpeas and ricotta salata to which Patrick added zucchini, san pell, white wine. Dessert for me only: leftover slice of chocolate cake from frozen, milk with Bailey's. Patrick recently renewed our subscription to CBS All Access, so tonight we watched the last 15 minutes of Star Trek: Discovery s1:e9 then we watched s1:e10.

Fri Feb 9, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs with smoked gouda, english muffin with butter, hash brown, sausage link, orange juice. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Notified James F and Marisa M that accordion transition jumpiness was now resolved. Submitted an email forwarder request to IT on behalf of Katherine K. Lunch from The View Cafe: veggie california on wheat with pickle slice, ate outside in the courtyard. Digital letterhead work. Small edit for EE for Marisa. Rode Uber Pool home. Nap. Rode UberX with Patrick to The Cafe. We split up, him to meet Jonathan G at Poesia, and me to meet Paul at Hi Tops. At Hi Tops I joined Paul. The opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics was playing on some of the televisions, and we watched some of it with subtitles. We had missed the procession of the athletes. We shared nachos with pulled pork. Karl arrived. We decided to go to Beaux next. Some kind of women's event was taking place in part of the bar. I met Karl's friends Rodney and Victor. We sat upstairs where it was quieter and chatted for a while. We next went to Toad Hall where I met or encountered other friends of either Karl or Paul: Jesse B, Hien, Arnoldo, Patrick, Jason (whom I also knew through Brian and Kelly), Tuan, Gogo Miguel. We next went to Badlands where I met or encountered on the dance floor Urian and Andrew and Andrew and elsewhere in the bar Thomas, Joseph, Andrew, Nick from LA, and ECB and his work friends Carl, Jessica, and Avana. ECB now lives in San Jose. Afterwards I got a cow burger and Snapple iced tea from Gyro Express. Upon leaving I encountered Tony S and we chatted a while. On the corner I met Myles and Myles and Gabby.

Sat Feb 10, 2018

Slept in. Breakfast at home with Patrick: pancakes and chicken apple sausage, hot earl gray tea with milk. Resolved a flickering video / redraw problem on my mid-2017 15-inch MacBook Pro (Intel HD Graphics 630 1536 MB) while browsing certain pages or using WebEx in Chrome. The problem did not occur in Safari. I resolved it by enabling hardware acceleration in Chrome's advanced preferences settings. This solution was not intuitive because many web pages described the solution for this problem to be to disable hardware acceleration. Recharge Medical work: html email editing and prep. No lunch. Nap. Rode Uber Pool to Shotwell House. Met Nate, Drew, Phil, Romy, and Paul for dinner at Poc Chuc. Nate is in town newly starting a San Jose job with Nvidia. We started with tortilla chips and salsa and an assortment of platillos mayas. I had the poc chuc. Everything was delicious. Service was rather neglectful at times, occasionally apologetic, but we didn't make a big deal of it. PDR shared news that they have placed an offer on a home in the Richmond. Afterwards we returned to Shotwell House and chatted for a few hours. Afterwards I attempted to meet with Tony and Hector at Lookout, but we missed each other due to a friend of theirs falling ill. I walked through the Castro then rode UberX home.

Sun Feb 11, 2018

Breakfast at home: leftovers. Resolved a recent problem with accidental data loss in Notational Velocity. I realized that I have Simplenote or Notational Velocity on multiple devices and that each copy has old versions of the data that are available offline. I found a device on which I hadn't used Simplenote or Notational Velocity since before the data loss, disabled wireless on it, and then opened it and was able to recover the known-lost data. I pasted it into another application before pasting it back in to Notational Velocity. Troubleshot a problem with TouchID failing on my 2016 iPad Pro. It is likely a hardware problem since if I try to add a new fingerprint to the two that were already there I can see that the sensor is failing to sense anything when I tap tap tap. A few hours later TouchID works again. Very strange. Upgraded MAMP PRO. Nap. Began setting up Shaarli 0.9.5 locally, then realized I should try to move all home websites to https and began investigating that. Bluehost doesn't support Let's Encrypt on shared hosting, so it looks like I need to leave Bluehost. A lost/gained domains chart on webhostinggeeks seems to support this decision, and Siteground seems to be a likely good choice. Dinner at home with Patrick: Good Eggs simple black bean street tacos with fixins, san pell. Played The Room: Old Sins on my iPad Pro with Patrick, completing The Maritime Room and exploring The Japanese Gallery. Installed Unified Remote server and iOS app on the MacBook Air that serves as our home server and entertainment system. I encountered an autodiscovery error that resolved after I quit and restarted Unified Remote on the MacBook Air. I installed a few remotes and it seems to work as expected except the Spotify Advanced remote. Will troubleshoot further later.

Wed Feb 14, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: yogurt with nuts and diced mixed fruit, 8 ounces of orange juice, slice of toast with butter. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. BTS Beat inaugural issue subscriber prep and final delivery. Lunch at As Quoted: chinese chicken salad, cafe au lait, sparkling water, and bought a small chocolate bar to go: about $22. Fri Feb 16, 2018

Breakfast at home: a bowl of cereal with milk for Patrick, an apple and orange juice for me. Sam picked up Patrick and me. We gave him bags of groceries that were likely to spoil while we were gone. He drove us to the Transbay Temporary Terminal. Patrick and I begin our Hearst Castle vacation celebrating 18 years since we met. Amtrak connector bus to Oakland took 15 minutes. We boarded Amtrak train #11 where we had reserved a bedroom, Patrick's first on Amtrak. We boarded just in time for a late breakfast. We shared our table with an actor that Patrick had recognized but we couldn't place his name and he didn't offer it. He was traveling with his wife whom had remained in their room. Patrick had scrambled eggs with grits and a croissant that looked like a biscuit, coffee. I had scrambled eggs with potatoes and bacon and a croissant that looked like a biscuit, coffee, orange juice. We rode the train, enjoying the views of mostly hills and farmland. I began reading The Velvet Rage: Overcoming the Pain of Growing Up Gay in a Straight Man's World by Alan Downs. Patrick napped at some point. We realized once we reached Paso Robles that we could have alighted there instead of at San Luis Obispo. I think my booking error occurred because I had read a web page saying that SLO was the closest station to San Simeon, but that that might have been written by someone in the L.A. area. It turned out alright, though, because rental car agencies in Paso Robles were not as good as those in SLO in terms of choice or ratings. Lunch in the dining car: at our table shared with an older couple, everyone ordered a hamburger but with various toppings. We arrived at SLO. We rode UberX in an Audi to the Avis counter at an Embassy Suites to pick up our rental car, which Patrick had trouble starting at first. We drove to Atascadero and checked in to The Carlton, which we liked. After checking in we asked the front desk to remove the feather and down bedding and while they did that we visited Grape Encounters Empourium, the companion to Grape Encounters Radio. We very much enjoyed the next couple of hours chatting with hosts David and Annie Wilson and other guests, eating complimentary chicken wings, and buying a bottle of Barolo. David was very non-pretentious and injected humor into seemingly every thread of conversation. The power had gone out earlier in the day while David was editing a new radio show episode. We tasted several wines and purchased some pours. We returned to the hotel room and unpacked. Drove to dinner at Thai Elephant with Patrick: cheese puffs, chicken panang curry, mongolian beef, jasmine rice, thai iced tea for Patrick, hot tea for me. Returned to the hotel. To bed.

Sat Feb 17, 2018

Breakfast at Back Porch Bakery aka Carlton Bakery and Cafe aka Pan d'Oro with Patrick: coffee with half and half, breakfast croissant with bacon and egg, biscuits and gravy with egg over medium. Reba at the counter was terrific. We enjoyed the art on the walls and Reba told us it was the owner's art. His name is Dan Berkeland. Patrick drove us to Hearst Castle. We arrived early for the first tour of the day. We got our wristband tickets, bought two bottles of water, and rode the tour bus 15 minutes to the top of the hill. It was Patrick's first time visiting, and my first time since I was a child. First was the Grand Rooms Tour. The Neptune Pool was empty and undergoing renovation. The entire property seemed in better condition that I recall when I was young. For our next tour we wandered the grounds and then waited in the assigned waiting area and used the nearby portapotties. Next was the Upstairs Rooms Tour. We rode the bus down the hill to break for lunch. We drove to Cambria seeing cattle and wild zebras along the way and lunched at Indigo Moon. We sat on the back patio enjoying a warm day. Drinks: clementine Izze for Patrick, pomegranate Izze for me, we shared fish and chips and a fried chicken cobb salad. Food and drink was delicious. Drove back to Hearst Castle. Waited at the visitor center awhile, missing the start of the film, so we browsed in the gift shop. Our third tour was called Designing the Dream. We thought this tour was going to be about architecture and Julia Morgan's process, but the tour guide didn't speak much about that at all. We got to see different rooms than we did before, so we didn't complain. This tour ended at the inside of the Indoor Pool. We had seen enough and were tired, so we decided to return to the bottom of the hill. Drove to The Carlton. Nap. Drove to dinner in Paso Robles at Thomas Hill Organics with Patrick: carafe of 2013, di bruno, sangiovese (santa barbara, ca); scallops with orange rum sauce; butternut squash and sunchoke soup du jour (too spicy for me), bread and oil. Everything so far was fine but the remainder of the meal was disappointing. We waited about an hour before the entrees arrived. We received a complimentary repour due to the wait. One adjacent table left without eating any entrees, and it was unclear to us if their appetizers and drinks were comped. When the food finally arrived, Patrick had bulgogi-style short ribs with creamy polenta, heirloom carrots, and pan jus. The polenta was underseasoned, the carrots were cold, parts of the short ribs were cold. I had a charred new york steak with confit shallots, green peppercorn jus, watercress, grilled king trumpets, chive-garlic potatoes with creme fraiche. I had ordered it medium but it arrived medium well. Dessert: triple chocolate espresso brownie with salted caramel gelato, two glasses of complimentary dessert wine, and two french-press coffees. As mentioned, alcohol and dessert were comped due to the unusually long wait. Drove to the hotel. To bed.

Sun Feb 18, 2018

Breakfast at Back Porch Bakery aka Carlton Bakery and Cafe aka Pan d'Oro with Patrick: coffee with half and half, french toast, oatmeal. Had some time to kill, so we walked to City Hall and Sunken Gardens and returned. Drove to Opolo for a wine tasting paired with cheeses and nibbles such as quince paste and (Armenian?) sausage. We were led by Meghan, who was fantastic. She also set up a tasting for us of chamomile liqueur and chocolate mint liqueur, which we enjoyed. We purchased 5 bottles, and she gave us one free because it was our anniversary. Drove to Paso Robles and walked around before deciding to lunch at Farmstead Kitchen (805-369-2705, 1344 Park Street, Paso Robles) with service at table 10 by Jeff: Patrick had a duck Benedict and coffee, I had a Farmstead burger medium rare and an iced tea. $37.69 before a $9 tip. I was too tired to continue wine tasting, so we returned to The Carlton, and we both ended up napping. Patrick jet-bathed and didn't enjoy it because the jets were not strong enough to bubble. Dinner at Il Cortile (608 12th Street, Paso Robles) with service by Erik: sparkling water. We shared two wine flights: the Italian and the Local Italian. Appetizers: poached egg with polenta and black truffle, crostini con burrata. Primi: we shared lobster ravioli. Secondi: we shared a filetto pepe verde. Dessert: tiramisu, selvapiana vin santo, espresso for Patrick. $171.86 before a $26 tip. Drove back to The Carlton.

Mon Feb 19, 2018

Moved the car. Breakfast at Back Porch Bakery aka Carlton Bakery and Cafe aka Pan d'Oro with Patrick: assorted pastries (ham and cheese croissant, chocolate croissant, morning bun), coffee with half and half. Packed and check out of The Carlton. Drove to San Luis Obispo, parked downtown in a parking lot. Visited Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Walked around more of downtown. Visited the History Center of San Luis Obispo County and San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. Got beverages at Linnaea's Cafe: caramel latte for Patrick, hot chai for me. Walked around more. Lunch at Big Sky Cafe (805-545-5401, 1121 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo): churasco chicken sandwich with a cup of gumbo yaya and iced tea for Patrick, vegetable spring rolls and cup of potato soup of the day and hot tea for me: $30.17 before a $7 tip. Bought gas at a Shell gas station: $24.51 for 7.2556 gallons. Drove to the Embassy Suites that contained our Avis office. Dropped off the rental car. Waited a while before riding UberX to Amtrak San Luis Obispo. Bedroom car again. Amtrak attendant David, and dining attendant Jamie. We shared a table with an older couple, the woman with a very soft voice, their first time to San Francisco. Patrick and I both ate the Land and Sea: cooked to order signature Black Angus flat iron steak with optional Bérnaise sauce, paired with a premium crab, shrimp, and scallop cake; vegetables. For his side, Patrick had mashed potatoes. For my side, I had wild rice pilaf. We finished playing The Room: Old Sins. The train was late getting in to Oakland by about an hour. Connector bus from Oakland to the Transbay Temporary Terminal. Rode UberX home.

Tue Feb 20, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs, half of an english muffin with butter, hash browns. Rode Uber Pool Express to UCSF Laurel Heights. Lunch at Picnix: the Grace Kelly sandwich, hot tea. Rode Uber Pool Express home. Dinner at home with Patrick: kale and orange bell pepper enchiladas with charred corn, cilantro rice, and refried beans. Patrick helped me create a journal entry for Friday. I manually reconstructed or restored data lost by Simplenote by using a trick I had realized earlier: turn wifi off on my iPad Pro, open Simplenote on the iPad Pro, copy and paste lost data from Simplenote to Apple Notes, close and force quit Simplenote, open Apple Notes, turn on wifi, move the Apple Notes notes from the iPad to iCloud, switch to the MacBook Pro, open Notes and Notational Velocity side by side, manually copy and paste data from Notes to Notational Velocity. When certain that the data have successfully migrated, it's safe to turn wifi on on the iPad Pro and let Simplenote synchronize. Realized that I probably left my scarf at Picnix.

Wed Feb 21, 2018

Fri Feb 23, 2018

We shared: truffle popcorn, fungi pizza, little gems salad, and an alpine lift cocktail shake. (I actually ate none of the popcorn because I had gotten full on everything else.) Rode UberX home.

Sat Feb 24, 2018

Breakfast at home with Patrick: multigrain pancakes from a milk carton, sausage patty, Café Bustelo. Tightened loose handles on kitchen cabinets. Troubleshot macOS Sierra 10.12.6 freezing issues and failed to find a solution. I discovered EtreCheck along the way, but it did not provide anything illuminating in my case. Rode Muni with Patrick to the Castro. We tried to get beverages at Philz but all the seats were taken so we went to Spike's which was pretty empty. We read from paper books. Afterwards we lunched at Thai House Express: chicken kee mao and thai iced tea for Patrick, thai house beef with rice and hot tea for me. Got a few groceries at Buffalo Grocery. Stopped at Castro Fountain for a small (two scoops) of red velvet ice cream. Rode Muni to West Portal Station. Stopped at the library to set up my account anew after not having used it for a long time. Rode Muni home with Patrick. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: tacos with fixins. Finished watching Atomic Blonde (2017) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Incredibly long and intricate hand-to-hand combat scenes, with a fair amount of enjoyable humor thrown in here and there. We both liked the music, but I thought it was out of place in some scenes. I disliked the spray-painted interstitials, which seemed low-budget to me. Highly recommended if you don't mind blood.

Sun Feb 25, 2018

Slept in. Rode UberX to brunch at Minas Brazilian Restaurant with Danny, Drew, Phil, Romy, Paul. Rode UberX home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: buttermilk baked chicken, vegetables, farro with sour cream. Patrick helped me create a journal entry for the 18th.
