Content work in Drupal. Filed pcard paperwork. Lunch to go from May Lee's: cashew chicken with vegetables and white steamed rice. I forgot to order a drink, but all they had was soda anyway. Walked to Golden Gate Park and sat on a log overlooking the baseball diamond. Just as I began eating a man approached me, apologizing for interrupting, and asked if I'd seen anyone break into his car just now. I did not, gave my condolences. Discovered on the walk back that Boulange is opening a new store on 9th between Lincoln and Irving. Small edit for Cindy to the career links page. Lots of Drupal content and styling work and task management and followup. Posted an update to the post-bacc page for Shirin. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home: leftovers. Recharge Spa website work: sitemap styling prep, new gallery images prep. Changed the batteries in my Apple wireless keyboard and magic trackpad. I still love both of these devices. I also keep an Apple magic mouse but rarely use it; basically just for Photoshop or InDesign.
Tue Jan 7, 2014

Lunch at the JCC: vegetable noodle soup with turkey and bacon sandwich, lemon-infused water: about $10. It was actually advertised as half-sandwich and soup, but I checked and they were correct in giving me a whole sandwich despite how it was pitched. I've had this experience before. It's confusing, but a nice result to be confused about. Lots of Drupal work, including making a new subtheme for one-page microsites. Calendar management. Worked late. Rode my bike home, getting home around 9:30 PM. Dinner at home: leftovers. Recharge website work: newsletter prep, new gallery photos. Snack: fortune cookie: A judgment will rule in your favor.

Finished reading Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow via Readmill, liked the book a lot. Despite my initial experience, Readmill is pretty nice so far. I like it. In this workweek I rode my bike to work and back home every day—a total of 46 miles. This feels great.
Sat Jan 11, 2014
The back pain I developed following a visit to House of Air was not really gone like I had previously thought it was, so after recently seeing a physical therapist, I have some exercises to do to loosen tightness in my upper and lower back. (The middle, where it hurts, is oddly where I have the best movement.) So this morning I began the exercises for that. Laundry. Lots of Recharge Spa website work: MailChimp campaign build and test, a few small optimization tweaks: robots, viewport, expiresbytype (google webmaster tools and google pagespeed insights). Late lunch: small bowl of leftovers. Dinner at home with Patrick: indian food delivery from masala. Researched cellular plans and mvnos (feeling the need to finally quit the iPhone 3GS). Caught up on journaling. Late meal: leftover vegetable stir-fry.
Sun Jan 12, 2014
Drove to Shotwell Street. Brunch with Romy, Drew, and Phil at The Ramp. Afterwards we walked in the Castro, stopping at 171 Hartford Street to walk through an open house: a $2,295,000 Victorian with a beautifully restored exterior and an ultramodern interior, redone by Ravi Anand. I did not mind the stark contrast of exterior and interior, and I felt the home was luxurious and comfortable. We got some groceries at Whole Foods, my first visit to this store on Market and Dolores. Back to their place. Rested. Dinner with Romy, Drew, Phil at their place: two kinds of Whole Foods deli pizza, kale salad, couscous salad. Home.

Lunch at Perilla: bun with bbq pork and imperial rolls, viet iced coffee, $15 after tip. More Drupal styling work and asana ticket followup. 1-on-1 with Cindy. Troubleshot and resolved a fuzzy text printing to a Brother color laserprinter for Lucia. Troubleshot and did not resolve Lisa's desire to connect to a multifunction device from 2005ish. The device was too old and Brother did not have the full software package to make it work with Windows 7 (64-bit). More Drupal styling work and asana ticket followup. Ordered a new HP LaserJet Pro P1102W printer for Joel to replace his very old HP LaserJet 1200. Rode Muni home. Fri Jan 17, 2014
Breakfast: peanut-butter granola with fresh, sliced banana; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Web edits: removing Melanie D's contact info and adding Lillian S's and Lily Y's. Funding content type build with Eric. We got everything built and tried putting in the pie chart but it just wouldn't work, gave up for now. Lunch at Artesano. An unpriced, sidewalk chalkboard special of wild grilled shrimp drew me in, but it turned out to be $17 and on the standard menu as well, and I thought that was too much money to spend for a lunch, so instead I ate the ají de gallina: "a classic peruvian stew: juicy shredded chicken stewed in a rich and hearty sauce of aji amarillos (peruvian yellow chiles), onions, and garlic, served over rice and garnished with traditional favorites—marinated onions, walnuts, and hard-cooked egg;" water: $11.99 before tax and tip. I liked it. Updated the OSACA staff listing on the web following Shirin's departure. Notified OSACA staff how to resolve the fuzzy text printing problem: choose a higher res in print settings and/or printing preferences. Dinner at Tonga Room with Drew, Romy, and Phil. (Danny is still on vacation in Vietnam.) Fun live music, mostly from the 1970s, by The Island Groove. PDR dropped me off at Market Street. Walked to Van Ness Station. Rode Muni to Castro Street Station. Walked around the Castro because it was 20 minutes until the next L train. Watched some buskers play classical music in front of Cliff's, gave them $2. Rode Muni home. I didn't ride my bike all this week because of the brief cold and because last week I had an unfortunate incident with a rude and ignorant driver and his yappy passenger that has discouraged me from riding.
Sat Jan 18, 2014

Shopped for hawaiian shirts online.
Sun Jan 19, 2014
Drove to Shotwell Street. Richard, Drew, Phil, Romy, and I walked to the Castro and ate at Mystique Cafe, which we all liked. Service is particularly good for the Castro. Phil saw the bottom of his bottomless mimosa glass only twice. Phil and Drew each had the same omelette, I had a salmon burger with garlic fries. Walked to Hi Tops, crowded because of an important football game: 49ers versus the Seahawks, encountered Tim who was accompanied by John and Ming. For fun we visited an open house at 366 Sanchez. Walked back to Shotwell Street, rested. Car wash at Auto City Car Wash with Drew and Romy. We split up and I did some shopping downtown, wanting to find some new clothes for two trips to Hawaii later this year. I parked in 5th and Mission garage. The Quiksilver store downtown at 207 Powell Street doesn't carry boys sizes. I was referred to boys departments at Macy's and Nordstrom so I checked them out as well but they both have a very limited selection of that brand. So the lesson is to not look for Quiksilver in person but instead to buy online in either mens or boys sizes and return what I don't like in person or by mail. Fortunately their return policy seems pretty easy. Parking: $5 for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Drove home. Late dinner at home: I made a vegetable stir-fry with steamed white rice, hot water.
Mon Jan 20, 2014

Uploaded various photos to Flickr. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled true cod, steamed spinach, sliced boiled egg, hot water. To bed early.
Tue Jan 21, 2014

I mostly took photos and helped with presentation hardware and software. Afterwards I rode Muni to 9th and Irving and visited Dr. Jonathan from the orthotics office at the shoe store called On The Run. He spent a lot of time with me getting a proper fit for different kinds of shoes, and I bought two pairs. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: red lentil soup with sausage, cabbage, and grilled true cod marinated in fresh orange juice and chinese five spices (adapted from a Russ Parsons recipe).
Wed Jan 22, 2014

Submitted a request to add a site to the A-Z list. Calendar management. Drupal issue queue followup. Followup for a student's change of email address. Sent a one-page microsite out for review. Lunch to go from Yellow Submarine: corned beef with swiss, Hansen's vanilla cherry soda. Walked to Golden Gate Park entering at the pedestrian entrance at 5th Avenue and sat on a park bench on MLK Drive to eat. Sent three one-page microsites out for review. Notified two students of the result of their access extension request. Intrasite planning meeting with Heidemarie and the Emerge team: Aubrey, Julian, John (CEO), and Mike. View building and ticket followup in Drupal. Patrick picked me up in the car because a package had arrived. Dinner at home: leftover red lentil soup, added a boiled egg; hot water. Installed the new toaster oven, prepped the new kitchen dish soap dispenser. The toaster oven is Black and Decker's TRO480BS. I really liked the design of Breville toaster ovens, but all their ovens were too large. We needed something with a small footprint. It was a terrible experience shopping for toaster ovens mostly because virtually all websites were awful about specifications. I don't care how many cubic feet is inside the oven (who knowingly cooks 0.4 cubic feet of food?); I want to know whether it will fit in the space I have. I want to know how annoying the timer ticking and timer bell is, but even though websites have been able to handle audio for almost 20 years no website had this information for any toaster oven. The dimensions for the TRO480BS are incorrect on Amazon's website, as found in the reviews and Q&A for that item, so it made Amazon's new compare feature useless because I could not trust Amazon to have correct dimensions for anything. My requirements list: 1. safe, 2. small size, 3. simple, intuitive, elegant controls, 4. bell or beep is not annoying. The controls on the TRO480BS don't really meet my elegance requirements, but there was no better fit for us than this one according to the information available to me. Finished watching Sting - Bring on the Night on Netflix DVD with Patrick. I loved it again. It was Patrick's first time seeing it.
Fri Jan 24, 2014
Realized this morning I didn't have my wallet, so I spent part of the morning retracing my steps from yesterday when I remembered I last had my wallet. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnasssus. Terminated some VPS accounts we no longer needed. Comm team meeting: status updates. Followup with OSACA staff about getting Apple Keynote for free. Followup for a student's email address change. Calendar management. Lunch from The View Cafe: veggie california sandwich on wheat, ate in the courtyard in the sun. Met with Paula about the readership survey in Qualtrics. Met with Eric and Michael N about funding data. Content and styling work in Drupal: various staged pages, Ahituv Lab. UberX to Jardiniere. Dinner at Jardiniere: an A Mure Amore at the bar while waiting for others to arrive. Half of us had lamb. I had diver scallops and white sea bass. For dessert we ordered two of the dulce de leche and Romy received a surprise platter of various small desserts. I can't remember what else we had. Food and service were both excellent throughout.
Sat Jan 25, 2014
Began prepping my laptop for installing Mavericks, accidentally chose Secure Delete instead of regular delete when emptying the trash, regretted my mistake after finding that secure delete is seven passes and I had deleted about 7 full-length movies. Oh, well, maybe I can upgrade to Mavericks next weekend. Realized where my wallet was: in my coat pocket at work. Patrick and I drove to UCSF Parnassus, I picked up my wallet, said hello to Cindy who happened to be in the office, then Patrick dropped me at Church and Market to continue on to his mom's. I rode Muni to Powell Street Station and waited in Union Square for Drew and Romy. Brunch with Drew and Romy at Cafe de la Presse. I had a breakfast croissant: eggs with sausage on a croissant, grilled potatoes, coffee. Drew had a yogurt parfait. I can't remember what Romy had. Shopping with Drew and Romy: The Alden Shop (assisted by Robert), Allen Edmonds (assisted by J Keven), Bonobos, The Alden Shop, Apple Store (to see Philips Hue lighting systems and bulbs). I bought a pair of Alden shoes and learned from Robert at The Alden Shop a new way to tie laces. Encountered Shirin and met Amin on the sidewalk, they met Romy and Drew. Shopping on my own: Quiksilver. Rode Muni home. Found the ID card of someone who works at PG&E, picked it up and will try to return it to its owner. Dinner at home with Patrick: buckwheat noodle soup with hickory-smoked tofu, char siu, vegetables, ginger, chicken broth; hot water. Rested. Learned about Ian Fieggen's great shoelace knot website.
Sun Jan 26, 2014
Secure erase seemed to continue long after it should have, so I restarted the Finder and all seemed well. I performed other prep activities then began the Mavericks install. Drove to Shotwell Street. Spent the day hanging out with Phil, Drew, Danny, and Romy at their place for brunch and dinner. In the late afternoon, Phil, Drew, and I walked to La Copa Loca and brought home ice cream for dessert later. Phil prepared brunch, Danny and Romy prepared dinner. We watched Archer and Aziz Ansari's Buried Alive on Netflix. Others also watched HGTV and the Grammy award show. Drove home. Continued the Mavericks installation.
Mon Jan 27, 2014

I used shoe trees for the first time.
Wed Jan 29, 2014
Breakfast: super nutty granola with raisins and 2% milk, hot water. Rode Muni L to Forest Hill Station. The wait for a 43 was over 15 minutes, so I walked to 8th and Kirkham, caught a 6, and rode it to UCSF Parnassus. (Three 44 busses passed in this time, and I could have taken any one of them but I hadn't thought of it or I had already started walking.) UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Even though I waited 8 minutes for the shuttle, it still was faster than riding the 43 and walking one block. Took over an hour to get to work. Checked a few email messages. I met Susie at the loading dock, and she drove us to Mission Bay. Eric had planned to meet us there. Kickoff meeting with Cristina and Esteban. Lunch at The Pub with Susie and Eric. Lunch to go from Subway: footlong veggie delight on wheat. Dentist. Purchased a few pastries at Arizmendi Bakery. Rode Muni home from 9th and Judah. Rested. Walked to 19th and Taraval. Ian met me there. We had planned to dine at New Ha Noi Restaurant but it was closed for the lunar new year holiday. We ate instead at Sushi Raw: three rolls, seaweed salad, seafood tempura, large sake.
Fri Jan 31, 2014
Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Breakfast from The View Cafe: egg and cheddar sandwich: about $2.50. Chatted with Debbie A about people data.
