Rode my bike to work. Encounterd Remy A while crossing the street, hello and a hug. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Followup with all about Java security: we're uninstalling Java from all computers that don't require it and disabling it in the default browser for others. 1-on-1 with Rodney. Responded to a website outage for our main site and others hosted on ServInt. The problem resolved itself within 22 minutes, was likely due to a problem at above.net. Lunch: Subway sandwich. The weather was warm and sunny today, so I ate partly in the shade next to the library talking to Leslie K finishing her lunch then later in the sun talking to Kirk H who passed by. Sent the comm team small edits for the Abate story on the homepage. Met Alex from ITFS, helped him where needed on the Java security request I submitted. Began preparing pcard paperwork. Rode my bike home. Waited for a craigslist buyer who eventually flaked. Dinner at home with Patrick: chinese chicken soup, spiked rootbeer float. Rode Muni to Rob and Sergio's place in the Castro. Met Gabby. Watched YouTube clips. Watched Magic Mike on DVD. Rode Muni home. Late meal by myself at King of Thai Noodle: fried rice with tofu and vegetables.

Installed iPad apps Spideo, Weathercube, and Zen Pinball. Breakfast at home: 2 hash browns, 2 fried eggs with grated cheese, 1 dinner roll, 8 ounces of orange juice, hot water. Laundry. Continued 2nd-pass editing Patrick's first 100 pages of a new book: pages 47 to 62. Long nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie burger with bbq sauce, schmooze. Deleted Weathercube about 16 hours after I installed it because I didnt think I could remember all the gestures required to operate it. Also deleted Zen Pinball because I couldn't figure out how to operate the flippers.

Woke up around 2:30 AM, couldn't return to sleep. A couple from the upstairs unit was arguing, but I'm pretty sure they didn't wake me nor were they the reason I couldn't return to sleep. Ate leftovers from King of Thai Noodle. Back to bed around 5:15 AM, slept until 10:30 AM. Light breakfast: small bowl of granola with diced apple and soy milk. Caught up on journaling. Rode Muni with Patrick to Union Square. Lunch at M.Y. China. Elegant surroundings (in particular the hanging lamps), mostly typical Chinese dishes but, atypically, with much higher quality of ingredients, noodle-pulling demonstration in the dining area was a treat to watch, some of the tableware was extraordinarily beautiful, the glass tea cups in particular. Service quality seemed mostly normal—this is approaching fine dining prices, but this is definitely not fine dining. When our busboy poured our water he spilled it rather significantly and made no apology and no effort to wipe the spill; we did not complain, and we laughed about it after he left. We loved the clean, open kitchen. We could see into the refrigerators even. This place is more about the decor, theatrics, and showmanship than the high quality food, so although you can probably eat a similarly tasty and filling meal in Chinatown for half the price or less, it's worth coming here at least once, clearly a splurge for most people, including us. We sat nearish the kitchen, and the restaurant was nearly full, so it was pretty loud. When the waiter spoke from Patrick's side of the table I could not hear him at all. Patrick noted how calm the kitchen seemed despite the large quantity of orders streaming through. We had complimentary sparkling water, dim sum collection (shiu mai, har gow, steamed bbq pork bao, multi-grain rice wrapped in tea leaf, mongolian beef bao, seafood dumpling)—$19, bowl of wonton soup—$12, half order of peking roast duck (with housemade pancakes, hoisin sauce, green onions, cucumber)—$20, pot of iron goddess king oolong tea—$6. About $60 before a $12 tip. Shopping: Johnston and Murphy (met salesperson Thomas), Zara men on Post Street. At Crate and Barrel I decided to buy a new extension dining table so that we can comfortably seat more than two other people. I've had my eye on one model for a few months. Ruthie helped me through the purchasing process following Trey's assistance last week. Bloomingdale's. Patrick got a mocha with soy milk at Peet's and we sat in Union Square for a bit. Nordstrom men's shoes. Rode Muni home. Weight training: bam bam. Patrick gave me a foot massage. Archived the web page and photos describing the dining table. Prepped and uploaded image galleries for craigslist items. Dinner at home: Patrick had oatmeal, I had wild chanterelle mushroom ravioli with marinara sauce from a jar mixed with leftover vegetables that cooked with baked chicken Patrick prepared last week. More new camera purchase research. Maybe not the PEN E-PL5 like I thought. The 18-month-old, now-discontinued Sony NEX-5N appears to be better in a lot of ways except there's no image stabilization, and I don't know what's going on with the NEX-3N, which was just released. More editing: pages 68 to 71.

Weight training: bam bam. Breakfast at home: granola with fresh, diced apple; flax milk. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Work related to Adobe Flash zero-day security vulnerabilities. Lots of email followup. Checked in with Raul from ITS who came to address my request to update all browsers on all computers with the latest version of Adobe Flash. Calendar management. Completed and submitted pcard paperwork to La'Trece. Listserv management for student XY. I had brought my iPad to work today thinking I would do some responsive testing but it never happened—too many other things to do. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover ravioli with marinara sauce, baby kale greens with grilled asparagus. Dessert: chocolate pudding pie with graham cracker crust. Camera research. Today I was really excited about the brand-new Sony NEX-3N and couldn't decide between it and the slightly older NEX-5R until I realized that both cameras had screens that only tilt instead of fully articulating like the screen of my old PowerShot A650IS. Dealbreaker. I returned to the E-PL5 but after seeing a video of it on YouTube realized that it too will not fully articulate. Fortunately, in the process of searching for NEX info I stumbled upon dpreview's camera search feature which is similar to snapshot. So I now have some new models to check out: Samsung EX2F, Nikon Coolpix P7700, Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5, Samsung NX20. The EX2F seems closest in size to my A650IS but I'm not sure if I want the same sort of thing as I have had the past 4 years. Organized bookmarks. Image Capture would no longer see my iPhone 3GS. Deleting prefs and zapping pram did not resolve the problem. Repairing disk permissions did not resolve the problem. Verify disk: no problems. Repaired disk permissions again. Cold booted the phone. Still no solution. Gave up for now.
Tue Mar 5, 2013
Resolved the problem I had yesterday with Image Capture no longer recognizing my iPhone 3GS by using a genuine Apple cable instead. Weight training: tricep kickback, crunch, wrist curl. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with raisins and cinnamon, flax milk, hot water. Rode my bike to UCSF Laurel Heights. It was my first time doing this, and it went pretty well. I spent about 35 minutes on a bike instead of about 55 minutes standing still at a bus stop or inside a bus. Almost got scraped by a car on California Street. The route Google Maps gave me took me along California Street which is terrible for bicycles—the lanes just aren't big enough, so I'll avoid this street in the future. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Extended one PID reg for Shirin. Calendar management. Content migration work: various, including began writing an rsync script to synch /files folders across environments. Web sprint review lunch meeting: I had spring rolls with orange dipping sauce from The View Cafe: about $7. Afterwards I was still hungry so I got a small plate of fried rice: $3. More rsync script work. C3 walkthrough conf call. More rsync script work. Redirected a logo request to Susie. Installed Find Any File and EasyFind for Mac. More content migration work. iPQB work with Eric D. Rode my bike home. Pretty strong north and east winds, occasionally gusty. Dinner at home by myself: pinto bean and cheese tacos with leftover roasted vegetables, hot water. Dessert: chocolate pudding pie with graham cracker crust, whipped cream from a can. Recharge Spa work for Drew: drafted one consent form so that it fits on one sheet, sent it to him for review. Handled a few inbox items from work.

Chatted briefly with Lucia about core curriculum courses: prereqs, seminar. Supp app work for Cindy. Began uploading Online Presence graphics assets to The Archive. Installed Win 7 64-bit, encountered problems installing software because my domain admin credentials did not work in it. Sometime within the past week I also installed Windows 8 64-bit and played with it some until Outlook 2013 started exhibiting seriously weird display driver problems. Not sure if it's a VMware Fusion problem, Outlook 2013 problem, or Windows 8 problem. No time to troubleshoot, so giving up on Win 8 for now. It was really hard to navigate anyway, especially since the Start button was taken away. Rode Muni home. I think the 7:30 66 bus left 9th and Judah early or didn't show at all, so I took a 44 to Forest Hill then an L train but it still took me 55 minutes to get home. Dinner at home with Patrick: pizza, egg rolls, hot water. To bed early.
Thu Mar 7, 2013

Met with Eric very briefly, resolved local development environment problems on my iMac. 1-on-1 with Cindy, interrupted by a student, I rescheduled for next week. Helped Shirin work around a problem with video not playing in slideshow mode in PowerPoint 2010. It played in preview mode but not in slideshow mode. My workaround: take a screen snapshot of the video, then link it to the video file stored in the same folder as the presentation. Press F11 after the click to start. Press Alt+F4 when done to quit Windows Media Player. Removed permission to comment from anonymous users in the SOP IT wiki due to spam. Rode Muni to Union Square. My breakfast date didn't show, so I ate on my own at Lefty O'Doul's: corned beef hash breakfast special with two eggs scrambled and wheat toast with butter, a cafe latte: about $15 before a $2 tip. Service was noticeably inattentive, but I didn't care. I did not like that tables were bussed and plates were scraped tableside with a trash-and-dishbin cart rather than in the kitchen, but it's not really something to complain about. I don't know many restaurants that do this. Muni to the doctor's office briefly, Muni back to Union Square. Met Patrick and his mom at Cheesecake Factory. For a label on one of the chairs it was indeed the correct color, but a very deep red rather than the medium red we were led to believe we would receive. The construction seems solid, and the seat is very comfortable. Watched part of The Last Seduction (1994) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. I stopped using the spray and steam features a long time ago because they stopped working properly. Lately I've noticed that the soleplate has something on it that occasionally leaves some kind of residue on ironed objects. I could clean it, but I wouldn't know if I were doing it properly, and I'm overdue for a new iron anyway.
