Sat Mar 13, 2021

Woke around 1:00 a.m. and had an idea and arose to type it into my notetaking app. Returned to sleep after awhile. Woke to a sore arm due to yesterday's COVID-19 vaccine shot #1. Ran in place to NPR Up First and SF Chronicle Fifth and Mission podcasts then Joey Yee videos on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, sliced banana, and blackberries; water. Patrick recently received his tax refund that was due to him last year. There was a strange delay because the IRS requested paperwork from us but they requested—and I re-sent them—paperwork that was in the original return and several months later they put the refund through. So annoying. Chatted with Patrick and Tina over SMS/iMessage. Patrick and I virtually attended Writers Read: SAS Reading Series 4, part of the 18th Annual Saints and Sinners Literary Festival on YouTube. Delivery from Tartine Sunset via Uber Eats: egg sandwich, cheesecake slice, frangipane croissant, apple hand pie. I ate the egg sandwich. Patrick ate the croissant. We saved the rest for later. Folded some laundry that Patrick had washed earlier. I listened to Something You Should Know 216 while doing it. Long nap needed probably due to last night's interrupted sleep and fatigue and feeling colder than usual from yesterday's COVID-19 vaccine shot #1. Skipped 2nd oatmeal today. Dinner at home with Patrick: falafel in pita from box mix with cucumber-mint-yogurt sauce, water, white wine. While eating we watched Literary Luminaries of the Violet Quill on YouTube, also part of Saints and Sinners Festival. I washed dishes. Dessert: I had three bites of the apple hand pie that Patrick had saved for me after eating the rest earlier today. We shared part of the cheesecake slice. Watched Legion s2:e4 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Still feeling a bit of post-vaccine fog. Updates for home websites. Continued playing Where Cards Fall on my iPad Air. Late snack: carrot sticks, celery sticks, Cedar's garlic hummus, blue corn tortilla chips, water. Washed more dishes. Earlier today Patrick prepared a pizza dough, letting it rise overnight.

Sun Mar 14, 2021

Daylight savings spring forward. Sore arm from COVID-19 vaccine shot #1 is still sore but a little less than yesterday. Ran in place to SF Chronicle Fifth and Mission podcasts then Joey Yee videos on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, sliced banana, and blackberries; water. Cut my hair, cleaned the bathroom, showered. Changed clocks: the Pottery Barn mantel clock and the clock on my micro four thirds camera. Patrick must have already changed the clock by the entry. Everything else changes automatically, I think. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, sliced banana; water. Patrick and I chatted with Tina all day on SMS/iMessage. Snack: carrot sticks, celery sticks, Cedar's garlic hummus, water. Dinner at home with Patrick: NYT cheesy pan pizza, red wine, water. Patrick used Caputo 00. It reminded us of Pizza Hut pan pizza. I washed dishes, seasoned the cast iron pan, and performed a block oil treatment on our cutting board. Cocktails: Patrick made us mezcal margaritas. We watched about half of Spinning Plates on Netflix DVD. The disc was damaged part way through and we couldn't make it work. We decided to return the disc to Netflix and order a replacement. We finished watching Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (2013) on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. We cuddled for a while. I arose and washed dishes. Continued playing Where Cards Fall on my iPad Air.

Mon Mar 15, 2021

Altered a sign template in Powerpoint for Marley. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Today Patrick made two flavors of no-churn ice cream: cherry and cherry with hazelnut crunch. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, blueberries; water. Helped Michael B with a question about formatting text and workflow with Constant Contact. Patrick also made two Southern pecan buttermilk cakes. We each tried a small slice, and it is delicious. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Gaspare's: chicken parmagiana for Patrick, chicken piccata for me, caesar salad and garlic bread to share, water. I washed dishes. We watched Legion s2:e5 on Hulu Basic Plan. Patrick went to bed. We cuddled for a while. I arose. Voluntarily finished D8 work to implement date to be determined because if I didn't I was going to lose my train of thought. Late meal: leftover caesar salad, one leftover beef ravioli, water.

Tue Mar 16, 2021

No more arm soreness from COVID-19 vaccine shot #1. A small bruise remains. Ran in place to Apple News Today and NPR's Up First podcasts then Joey Yee videos on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, blackberries, and blueberries; water. Sprint standup. Read CSS Layout News 294. D8 work all day. Early lunch: leftover chicken piccata, leftover garlic bread, leftover cole slow, water. Troubleshot problems with internet which became a 90-minute outage, which very rarely happens with Sonic. Restarting the router twice and the ONT once failed to resolve the problem. I called Sonic after about 40 minutes, was on hold for 15 minutes, indicated I wanted a callback. The internet returned about 90 minutes after the outage began. I received my callback shortly thereafter: they had encountered a DNS issue. Fletch visited to pick up some slices of buttermilk cake, and we chatted for a while outside with masks from a distance. It was good to see him and chat. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, blueberries; water. Dinner at home with Patrick: green lentils with saffron brown rice, water. I had a glass of red wine. I washed dishes. Dessert: homemade Southern pecan buttermilk cake with homemade cherry ice cream. Together we played Where Cards Fall on my iPad Air for a while. Afterwards we watched Warrior s2:e6 on Cinemax. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Late snack: medium butter leaf lettuce salad with sliced mushrooms and caesar dressing, blue corn tortilla chips with Cedar's garlic hummus, water.

Wed Mar 17, 2021

Ran in place to Apple News Today and Hidden Brain podcasts. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and diced pear; water. Sprint standup. D8 work all day. Patrick and I visited with Kerry and Mom Ryan for the first time since October 18 and November 1. Patrick rented a Getaround car and drove over. We met in the courtyard with masks and distancing. They both received their second doses of Pfizer four weeks ago. We gave Patrick's mom some slices of Southern pecan buttermilk cake, a birthday card, a new iPhone SE 2nd generation in red, a new (faster) phone charger, and a new case to fit the new phone. I attempted to perform the phone setup, but we couldn't connect to the building's wifi and the cellular signal in the garden was almost non-existent. The phone had a low charge and we found an outdoor outlet, but that wasn't the most important part of the problem. After failing with multiple tries, Patrick and I took it home. I backed it up to multiple devices, performed the setup, swapped the sim card, and Patrick was on his way to return it to her. Lunch at home: I made for myself black rice noodles with a tofu and veggie stir-fry, water. Resolved D7 styling problems with details-summary. Dinner at home with Patrick: I prepared cheddar veggie burgers with mayo and butter leaf lettuce, crinkle-cut fries, sweet potato puffs. Water to drink. Setup and prep for Patrick's event. We attended Queer Flannery O'Connor Award Winners, part of the Perfectly Queer reading series (co-hosted?) by Rick and Wayne G. The other two award winners were Lori O and Anne R. They each read briefly from their books, then discussed how the award has influenced their careers, whether they knew about O'Connor's racist attitudes before winning the award, and how they view the award in this light. It was a fine discussion, and everyone was having so much fun they went 22 minutes over the scheduled 60 minutes. We undid our setup. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes then had dessert: a small slice of buttermilk cake. I also gave a bunch of slices to the upstairs neighbors. Updates for home websites. Fixed some minor issues with Patrick's website: resolved incomplete paths in a favicon site manifest, removed unneeded sourcemap references in asset files provided by the CMS, adjusted the pull exclude list. Today after avoiding using BetterTouchTool for a long time because of a strange problem in which it would disable my Esc key, I began troubleshooting the problem again. I figured out how to disable GoldenChaos: click the Preset menu in the top right corner, then uncheck the Active checkbox for GoldenChaos. Late meal: butter leaf lettuce salad with sliced mushrooms, grated mozzarella, ranch dressing; water.

Thu Mar 18, 2021

Updated fallback passwords. Snack: one mandarin orange. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Marnee Thai: bbq chicken, yellow banana (plantain) curry with beef, fried fish cakes, brown (red) rice, thai iced teas, water. I washed dishes. Patrick had dessert: cherry hazelnut crunch ice cream. We finished watching Spinning Plates on Netflix DVD. I loved the film. Afterwards we watched standup comedy on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. Removed and reinstalled GoldenChaos for BetterTouchTool. Spent some time reconfiguring BTT. Troubleshot problems in which BTT would not save many various settings after I set them: custom date format, disabling triggers, etc.

Sat Mar 20, 2021

Slept in some. Ran in place to TED Talks. Breakfast at home with Patrick: delivery from Craftsman and Wolves: kouign amann and frittata breakfast sandwich for Patrick, alfajores kouign amann (AKA) and rebel within for me. Patrick made us Tazo chai. He also ordered us a loaf of pain maison to consume later. Walked to the mailbox and back to mail the Netflix DVD. Weeded in the front of the house then again in the area outside the living room window in the back of the house. Successfully updated the firmware on my old Panasonic DMC-G6 camera to version 1.2. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, and blackberries; water. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover curry and red rice for Patrick, leftover split peas with brown rice for me, water. Afterwards we watched The Falcon and the Winter Soldier s1:e1 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. Late meal: small salad, water. Later snack: no-oil, no-salt popcorn, a small piece of chocolate, water.

Sun Mar 21, 2021

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. Ran in place to a TED talk then an hour of Greyhound on Apple TV+. Shower. Lunch: leftover split peas with ham, water. Long nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: shrimp rolls (in the style of Woodhouse Fish Company's crab and lobster rolls) on slices of Craftsman and Wolves sourdough, water. I washed dishes. Cocktails for me only: experiments with homemade cherry liqueur syrup: it curdled in Godiva liqueur so we used just bourbon and ice and that fared better. Dessert: Patrick's no-churn cherry and hazelnut crunch ice cream Watched Warrior s2:e8 on Cinemax. Then I continued watching Greyhound. Then together we watched Michael Che Matters on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I finished watching Greyhound and loved it despite the story being nearly entirely action. Occasionally encountered problems reaching github, so I restarted my computer. Updated printouts of the medic alert info I carry in my wallet and phone holder. Late snack: celery sticks, multigrain and multiseed crackers, hummus, water.

Mon Mar 22, 2021

Ran in place to Apple News Today and TED talks. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and diced pear; water. Reviewed broken links in Siteimprove. Handled a logo request from Katie M in Alumni Relations. Had lots of trouble signing in to my Keeper Security account. I eventually got it to work but don't know how I did it. Handled spam: someone attempted to sign me up for an account on a site called Job Blaze, and I received seven unsolicited emails before I put a stop to it (I hope). Changed draft chrome toggle keyboard shortcut from Ctrl+D to Ctrl+Z. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Fixes for spacing and getting images to line up with text better, applied only to CPCS so as not to potentially break things elsewhere. Lunch: mixed greens with leftover shrimp salad, water. Continued playing Where Cards Fall. Responded to a request from Angie G about nameplates. D8 work the rest of the day. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, and blueberries; water. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken cacciatore, water. Red wine for me only. I washed dishes. We watched Warrior s2:e9 on Cinemax then standup comedy clips on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. Tue Mar 23, 2021

Ran in place to Apple News Today and Fifth and Mission podcasts then Bill Vicars on YouTube. Sprint standup. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. Attended two UCSF town halls: Time of Remembrance then the COVID-19: The Path Forward. Dinner at home with Patrick: New York Times' cast-iron pan pizza, this time with all-purpose flower instead of Caputo 00. Toppings were marinara, sauteed mushrooms, arugula, grated mozzarella. Patrick described the Caputo 00 version as "more Italian, more like focaccia" and the all-purpose flour version as "still like focaccia but more American." Patrick washed dishes. Cocktails over Zoom with Chris and Andy: we drank mezcal margaritas, they drank red wine. We used the trial version of an app called Camo to improve video quality by using my iPhone 12 mini as a webcam connected to my MacBook Pro. It worked as expected in only 8 minutes of setup. (I think I had to quit and restart Zoom for it to see the new webcam device since I started Zoom before Camo.) We chatted about San Pellegrino flavored sparkling sodas, COVID-19 vaccines and the states of our worlds, pizza, cocktails, Maui, and Anza-Borrego before separately watching a documentary about Flannery O'Connor on PBS that we had thought was going to be presented live but which seemed to turn out to stream on demand. Patrick got too tired to finish it, though, so we'll continue another evening. I washed dishes then did some tidying and trash management. Late snack: mixed vegetables from frozen, water. Encountered again the problem of my Esc key failing to work because of BetterTouchTool. Had to restart the computer.

Wed Mar 24, 2021

Then we watched Warrior s2:e10 on Cinemax then standup comedy on Just For Laughs on YouTube. Today Patrick received notice of an excellent review from IndieReader for his book If We Were Electric. Patrick went to bed. Today's backups problem was due to corruption on a source Toshiba Canvio Slim external hard drive. I troubleshot it by using Disk First Aid in Disk Utility to check the drive for errors, but it was unable to be repaired. I resolved the problem by confirming that my onsite and offsite backups for that drive were secure, then erased the source external hard drive, then restored it from onsite backup. No more problems.

Fri Mar 26, 2021

Cesar Chavez holiday. Ran in place to Apple News Today, Fifth and Mission, and NPR Up First podcasts then various videos on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. Removed identifying labels from grocery delivery paper bags using a stinky permanent marker then left them outside so the smell would dissipate. Tried to figure out from San Francisco Recology's website how to recycle or trash clothing that isn't suitable for reuse, eventually found that it's okay to go in the landfill bin. I looked for better options, but no place made it easy. I found one place that sent you an 11 x 11 x 20 box with a prepaid shipping label that you could fill with textiles and they would handle them appropriately, but it cost $120!—nope. Patrick said something to the effect that if they can't make it easy to do something more ethical then it deserves to go to the landfill, and I have to agree. Lunch: small bean and roasted veggies taco with mozzarella and mixed greens, water. Attempted to figure out how to return an All-Clad fry pan under warranty. There is no website method to initiate a warranty return—you have to call. The recording at their 1-800-255-2523 number said their hours were Monday to Friday 9 to 12 and 1 to 4 Eastern. They're open only six hours per day, optimized only for people on the East Coast. So their phone support ends at 1:00 p.m. Pacific, and I had attempted to call a little after 1:00 p.m. and was rather dumbfounded that for the four remaining business hours on the West Coast they are simply not available. I guess for some reason they can't hire more than one person to provide customer service. Upon hearing this news, Patrick said, "Well, I guess we're not buying All-Clad anymore." Recycled Mom Ryan's old iPhone 5s via Apple. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, and blueberries; water. Trash management: shredded lots of old mailing labels. Vacuuming. Snack: pretzels, water. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick grilled boudin which he special-ordered from New Orleans. We had that in addition to delivery from Brenda's Meat and Three: molasses-black-walnut iced coffee and red beans and rice for Patrick, kale and chicory salad for me, crawfish beignet to share, water for me. Everything was great, even the beignet, which was covered in a red spice which we believe was paprika and which was not spicy. The crawfish inside was a bit spicy, but I could handle it. The red beans and rice was too spicy for me; I had only a bite. The salad I thought was perfect. The sugar cane dressing and sliced grapes provide a sweetness to balance the slight bitterness of the chicory. The coarsely chopped almonds provide a contrasting texture to the squishy grapes and the soft cow's milk feta. Everything was chopped or sliced to an appropriate and aesthetically pleasing size. So healthy, too. Afterwards we watched Superstore s6:e14 and e15 on Hulu Basic Plan then Falcon and Winter Soldier s1:e2 on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. Late small meal: leftover kale and chicory salad, water. I washed a few dishes. Troubleshot problems with CCC: "The device that hosts the source network volume is not available." and "Some non-critical errors were reported during the backup task." I resolved the problem by manually unmounting volumes on the computer with CCC on it, then restarting both the source and destination computers, then on the source computer renaming the computer in sharing preferences to remove a dash and a number. Continued playing Where Cards Fall. Started playing Patterned. Both of these Apple Arcade games are very relaxing puzzlers, and I recommend them.

Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Underdogs Tres via Uber Eats: chips, extra crispy al pastor quesadilla for Patrick, baja burrito with no salsa rojo for me, agua frescas for both. Patrick also ordered a side of pollo asado to use in a future recipe. While waiting, we had mezcal margaritas and I began our four-part process for completing our taxes. After dinner I washed dishes. We watched Legion s2:e7 on Hulu Basic Plan. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes then continued playing Where Cards Fall on my iPad Air. Late snack: leftover burrito and chips, water.

Ran in place to Apple News Today and Fifth and Mission podcasts and Joey Yee on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. No sprint standup. Troubleshot error "upload failed this file wasn't uploaded because the specified path wasn't found on the server or permission was denied" which occurred with OneDrive after saving a new Excel document to my OneDrive folder from Excel for macOS. After several minutes of trying to figure out what went wrong, I found that the file had indeed been uploaded. What a waste of time. Began creating a document summarizing technology limits of things at UCSF, such as maximum storage space per mailbox, maximum attachment filesize, maximum number of Zoom participants in a standard Zoom account, and things like that. Today was warm enough for me to sit in the back yard for a while, despite occasional cool breezes. Lunch: two small caesar salad wraps with sliced cherry tomatoes and toasted chickpeas, water. 1:1 with Eric. Continued work on the person field inventory. Read CSS Layout News 296. Edited town hall copy and selected proposed images for Grant. Prepped the town hall html email in Mailchimp. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, and blueberries; water. Responded to a permissions request. Dinner at home with Patrick: orange cauliflower quesadillas with homemade parsley salsa verde, water. Red wine for me. I washed dishes. We continued watching Stalker on Netflix DVD then stopped after a while and watched The Simpsons s31:e15 Screenless on Disney+. Patrick went to bed. I cuddled with him for a while then arose. While watching Stalker, I had been thinking to myself that I hadn't seen this bad and slow a film since Solaris, and then it all made sense when I found that they were both made by Andrei Tarkovsky.

Ran in place to Apple News Today and Fifth and Mission podcasts and Joey Yee and Bill Vicars (second viewing of Lesson 1) on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and sliced banana; water. Sprint standup. Gallup discussion over Zoom with Alesia W, Liana C, and comms team. Worked in the back yard for part of today. D8 work all day: resolve issues following James's image credit and other changes yesterday. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself brodo di carne with fusilli, arugula, coarsely quartered mushrooms, orange cauliflower, and diced parsley. Water to drink. Encountered what I think is a Google Chrome redraw bug that I think wasted hours of my time while troubleshooting CSS transforms because I could not figure out why my code was not behaving as I expected. Eventually I decided to examine the same behavior in Firefox, where I found no problem to exist. I then began finding and installing identical or corresponding add-ons and their configuration in preparation to switch from Chrome to Firefox—or at least eventually be nimble in both. Dinner at home with Patrick: asparagus-pesto lasagna, caesar salad, water, red wine. I washed dishes. Afterwards we finished watching Stalker (1979) on Netflix DVD. We both don't understand why this film has such high ratings.
