Sat Feb 1, 2020

Ran most of Marina Bay Singapore Virtual Run via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Breakfast at home with Patrick: two eggs scrambled, bacon, hash brown with ketchup, buttermilk drop biscuits, water for me, orange juice for Patrick. Walked and rode Muni to Apple Store Stonestown to get Patrick's MacBook Pro repaired. Craig helped us quickly and efficiently. I didn't realize until we arrived that Patrick's laptop battery had caused the laptop to bulge quite noticeably. Walked and rode Muni to the Castro to run an errand. We encountered and chatted briefly with Mike P and Sun who were walking Chester and another dog whose name I forgot. Walked to Castro Street Station. Rode Muni to lunch at Chalos (415-562-7752, 2240 Taraval St): three empanadas and an order of churros. Spinach and cheese, chicken, and mushrooms. All the food was delicious. We saw several customers who were barefoot. Surfers, maybe. $21.20. Walked home. Swept and weeded in front of the house. Repotted the orchid because with the last repotting with all lava rock I think it was getting too little water, and I didn't want to water more frequently. House chores: vacuumed the air purifier pre-filters, vacuumed elsewhere. Lunch: Patrick had a toasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I had noodles with egg, red onion, and parsley. Pulled the MacBook Air that was being used as our home entertainment server off the bookshelf so that Patrick could use it while his MacBook Pro was being repaired at Apple. Installed updates for home devices. Watched Cobra Kai s1:e1 on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Washed dishes. Needed to install Office but the MacBook Air was still on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 and the latest version of Office needed 10.13 or later so I prepped it for an upgrade from Sierra to Catalina. I hope nothing breaks. Patrick napped in the evening before going to bed. Washed dishes. Listened to various California Sun podcast episodes. Completed the Catalina installation.

Finished running Marina Bay Singapore Virtual Run via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Ran Ko'Olina Hawaii Virtual Run via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Ran part of Niagara Falls Virtual Run with Ambient Sound via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Breakfast at home: water, grapes. Followup with Catalina install. Installed new Epson drivers. Dessert with Patrick: today he baked Foolproof Living's Ultimate Chocolate Bundt Cake which turned out perfectly delicious. Recreated lock screen wallpaper for my iPhone X and my iPad Pro using a different photo of Patrick and me. Lunch at King of Thai Noodle Cafe (1541 Taraval St): Patrick had fried chicken with rice and a thai iced tea, I had bbq pork egg noodle soup and hot tea. $31.74 before a $5.71 tip. Nap. Washed dishes. Cocktails and dinner at home with Patrick. Patrick made a cocktail with bourbon, banana liqueur, maraschino cherry juice, lemon juice. Pepperoni DiGiorno pizza, water. For dessert Patrick had another slice of today's chocolate cake, and I froze the rest in individual slices. Watched Fortune Feimster Sweet and Salty on Netflix instant watch with Patrick—hilarious! Unloaded photos from my iPhone X and uploaded them to Flickr. Sharing to the Flickr uploader works very poorly and unreliably; I uploaded 20 photos in three separate batches because each time only some of the photos would upload. I ought to get switch from Flickr but I don't know anything better that has the features I like about it. Archived files.

Mon Feb 3, 2020

Ran about half of Hoover Dam Rail Trail Virtual Walk via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Installed brew then macvim on the MacBook Air. Breakfast at home with Patrick: banana pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs with grilled tomato, orange juice for Patrick, water for me. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Followup with Siteimprove support tickets. Notified appropriate parties of orgchart-related changes. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Siteimprove work: extend policies to QBC and grad programs sites, policy work. Lunch at Artesano: chicken and vegetable soup with plantain chips, water. My soup arrived barely warm, so I sent it back and within a few minutes I had hot soup. About $9, no tip (counter service). Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover rice and beans and biscuit, water. Afterwards I reconfigured the Thunderbolt 2 docking station to work with the MacBook Air temporarily set up while Patrick's MacBook Pro is being repaired. Lots of trouble getting the MacBook Air to see the HP Z27n display; restarting the MacBook Air seemed to fix it after lots of other things didn't.

Tue Feb 4, 2020

Snack: roasted, unsalted peanuts. More Siteimprove policy work. For dinner Patrick and I had planned to eat at Mandalay, but when we arrived we found a sign on the door saying they were closed even though they are normally open on Tuesdays. We walked to and dined at Mamahuhu instead: sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls with dipping sauce, wonton soup, jasmine rice. Patrick had the pu-erh soda again. I had a glass of rosé and a cup of tap water. $52.08 after a $2 tip (counter service). Afterwards we got dessert at Schubert's Bakery: chocolate mousse with toasted almonds—perfectly delicious. We also got a few items to bring home: one pineapple turnover, one cranberry custard twist, a small bag of assorted cookies. $15.50. Walked and rode Muni bus 44 home, which was made frustrating because we had missed our bus transfer by one minute and had to wait 19 minutes for the next bus 66. Watched various clips on YouTube. Looking at my receipt, I realized that Schubert's gave us 30% off our chocolate mousse, and I didn't know why.

Read WDRL 281. Siteimprove policy work: bad markup. Read the Pharmchem quarterly email newsletter. Walked and rode Muni home. Mon Feb 10, 2020

Breakfast at home: sourdough toast with avocado, tomato, cheddar, and mixed greens; water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Siteimprove linkchecking let me to learn that the iOS app called CipherCloud is no longer available in the Apple App Store, so I reported the issue to IT. Lots of Siteimprove policy work: resolve bad markup. Snack: one tangelo. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Mt. Zion to Mission Bay. I arrived earlier than I had expected, so I had a late lunch at The Pub: cow burger with cheddar, french fries and ketchup, tap water. Doctor appointment. Walked and rode Muni home. Thu Feb 13, 2020

Ran Florence, Italy Walking Tour (4k Ultra HD 60fps) via BookingHunterTV on YouTube. Left home without eating breakfast. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. On the 1BX the 3rd grade class of George Peobody Elementary joined our ride. It was crowded and unusual, and I had a nice chat with one adult and child. Sprint standup was late, so I walked to Rigolo for a breakfast sandwich, which turned out larger than I wanted. I ate half the sandwich, the side of fried potatoes, and took the other sandwich half to go. D8 migration meeting for Levi and Grant with Eric and James. Styled The Archive after James did some upgrading. Siteimprove policy work, including resolving a few occurrences of mixed http and https content. Lately I have been receiving what seems to be either an autodialer or a fax machine repeatedly calling me at work from both 1-628-242-2812 (four times on February 12) and 1-628-242-2817 (three times on February 13). The voicemail it leaves is a pattern of short beep then silence then short beep and silence and it repeats. I don't know how to make it stop. Prepped an announcement about the availability of the School's editorial style guide. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: orecchiette with broccoli sauce, side of slices of Firebrand sourdough batard, water. Dessert: leftover chocolate cake that we had stored in the freezer, water. Patrick picked up his repaired laptop today, so I migrated documents that he had worked on and set everything back the way it was before. I encountered some problems with accessing network folders that remained unresolved when I went to bed late.

Fri Feb 14, 2020

Pre-breakfast: one clementine mandarin. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Zoom meeting with Eric D and Joanna T to discuss lab site build process, Zaro Lab site, listservs, and html email. Worked with Eric to trim and send the editorial style guide announcement. Brunch at desk: the half breakfast sandwich from yesterday. Staged new copy for the PharmD-PhD page for Eric for Susie for Leslie and sent it to Susie for review. Walked and rode Muni to meet Patrick at Spike's where he had a mocha and I had a hot chocolate. Afterwards we walked to dinner at Fable: still tap water, glass of Les Charmes sancerre for Patrick, glass of LeDevoy viognier for me. Three-course prix fixe for $75 each. Patrick had soup, lamb, and chocolate lava cake. I had soup; scallops with pork belly, broccolini, and pureed sweet potato; and rosemary panna cotta. Food delivery was prompt for the first course but afterwards there were very long delays between courses. In particular, at dessert, Patrick's dessert arrived, then there was a long delay of several minutes waiting for mine. Someone came to our table to double-check whether I had ordered lava cake or panna cotta and then left again while I whispered to Patrick, "That's not a good sign." (Was my order not even properly entered into the computer?) We weren't in a hurry, so I didn't make a fuss, even after receiving our check, which included by default a gratuity of 20%. We didn't mind much at the time, but in retrospect I feel that this wasn't a good value. $233.66 after SF mandate and tax. Rode UberX home.

Sat Feb 15, 2020

Finished running Niagara Falls Virtual Run with Ambient Sound via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Began running Kilsbergen Sweden Virtual Run with Music but quit after a few minutes because the video quality was too poor—the only video I didn't like so far on Treadmill TV. Ran Red Rock Secret Wilderness Virtual Run in Sedona Arizona which had mixed video quality, but the scenery was more interesting than Kilsbergen, so I stuck with it. Washed dishes. Breakfast: leftover ramen, water. Washed dishes. Vacuumed. Lunch: leftover fingerling potatoes, water. Rewired and rehung picture frames, completing picture frame earthquake-proofing that I had started a long time ago. Snack: toasted multigrain chips, salsa. Watched Superstore s5:e15 on Hulu Basic Plan with Patrick followed by Star Trek: Picard s1e4 on CBS All Access with Patrick. Dinner at home with Patrick: shakshouka, side of slices of Firebrand sourdough batard. Dessert: Bi-Rite mint chocolate chip ice cream. Watched YouTube with Patrick: Hiking 60 Miles Alone in Hornstrandir Iceland via Kraig Adams, Marrying a 90-Year-Old for the Sex - Anthony DeVito and Sam Morril: I Got This - Full Special via Comedy Central Stand-Up. Continued troubleshooting error "the operation can't be completed because the original item can't be found" after Patrick's computer returned from repair. The solution provided by Reddit user chzplz fixed it for me: "disable file sharing on both macs, reboot, and re-enable sharing."

Sun Feb 16, 2020

Vacation day 1 of 3. Ran about half of Hoover Reservoir Virtual Run via Treadmill TV on YouTube. Breakfast: toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese, water. Packed for a short trip. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftover orecchiette with marinara sauce, leftover soup. Patrick also had brioche toast with butter. Patrick got a rental car from Turo and we drove to Glen Ellen. Checked in to room 15 at Gaige House + Ryokan for two nights. We enjoyed delicious complimentary cookies with hot tea, then rested in the room, unpacked, and explored the property. Drove to Yountville, arriving a bit early for our dinner reservation at Bistro Jeanty (707-944-0103, 6510 Washington St, Yountville). We walked in the area a bit then attempted and failed to get a drink nearby. (We arrived without enough time, and service was also too slow.) The line at Bouchon (or was it Bouchon Bakery?) was out the door—crazy. Bistro Jeanty was full and lively. Bottle of Evian ($7.5), Lumiere cocktail for Patrick ($14), Hemingway daiquiri for me ($13). We shared: quenelles de brochet (pike dumplings with lobster sauce, $16.50) and salade Lyonnaise (escarole with a soft-boiled egg and a warm apple-smoked-bacon vinaigrette). Patrick had filet au poivre (8 ounces of tournedos with a black pepper crust, mashed potatoes, haricots verts, and a creamy mushroom sauce, $48) with a glass of 2018 Paradigm rosé of merlot ($19). I had entrecote frites (12-ounce prime rib-eye steak with french fries and berneaise, $39.00) with a glass of (off-menu?) Hall cabernet ($25). For dessert we shared a chocolate mousse brulée ($10.50). Patrick had a double espresso with dessert ($4.50). $228.16 before a $40 tip for Josh, whose service was very good. We enjoyed our meal very much. Neither of us had had anything like the pike dumplings before, and we enjoyed them. We found the warm vinaigrette on the salad was an atypical and perfect dressing. We both enjoyed our entrees. For both dishes the meat temperatures we requested were exactly correct. I was unable to finish my entrecote. The fries are about 3/8" cut and were served with ketchup and a horseradishy-mayoey dipping sauce. For the drive to and from Yountville, Waze failed us because it required an internet connection, which was very weak in these parts. Google Maps took us along the route with the shortest time which was also through very windy roads—Trinity Road, Dry Creek Road, Oakville Grade Road—which we regretted by the end of the night because it was more effort as well as more risk, especially at night.

Mon Feb 17, 2020

Vacation day 2 of 3. Ran in place while channel surfing cable television. Breakfast at Gaige House + Ryokan: steamed potatoes, oatmeal with fixins, chocolate croissant, fritatta slices, toast with fixins, fresh fruit, orange juice for Patrick, water for me, coffee for both. Patrick and I drove to Sonoma and explored Sonoma Plaza and the surrounding shops, stopping briefly at Basque Boulangerie Café for a few items. We visited Mission San Francisco Solano, including the incredible cactus wall in the inner courtyard and the prickly pear cactus outside the entrance. Admission was $3 each. Stopped at Whole Foods on the way home mostly so that Patrick could buy bubble bath. We spent the rest of the day enjoying our room. I sunbathed and began rereading Hungry Town by Tom Fitzmorris on our private rear garden patio which overlooked a small manmade creek empty of water. I snacked on an Urban Remedy chia parfait and a small to go container of asian noodle salad. Patrick had half of a chocolate-cherry muffin from Basque. Patrick filled a large egg-shaped stone tub and bubble-bathed. I joined him after a while. We showered, then dressed for dinner. Again we drove to Yountville, but this time we instead took the southern route through Schellville and Napa. Again we arrived a bit early for our dinner reservation and walked in the area. Neither of us had seen The French Laundry in person before, and we were surprised at how easy it was to miss because it is so unassuming from the street. The gardens were easy to spot, however, and we enjoyed seeing them from the sidewalk. Our dinner was not at The French Laundry, however. We got a round of drinks at the Restoration Hardware bar: 2017 Jean Philippe brut rose for me, 2018 Unti cuvee blanc for Patrick. $34.48 before a $7 tip for Carrie W whose service was very good. Afterwards we dined at the Restoration Hardware restaurant (707-339-4654, 6725 Washington St, Yountville). One glass of 2018 Hourglass Estate sauvignon blanc for both, ice water for both. We shared a shrimp cocktail (with lemon, dijonnaise, and cocktail sauce) and a butter lettuce salad (with chervil, chives, sauv blanc vinaigrette). Entrees: Patrick had roasted half chicken (with roasted garlic, olive oil potato puree, natural jus). I had broiled salmon (with honey, black pepper, brown butter, lemon). For dessert we shared gelato: one scoop each of salted caramel and coffee. Patrick had an espresso with dessert. $158.40 before a $23 tip. Service by Matt (aka Mathew S) was excellent. Drove back to Gaige House + Ryokan, southern route.

Tue Feb 18, 2020

Vacation day 3 of 3. Ran in place while channel surfing cable television. Packed. Breakfast at Gaige House + Ryokan: pancakes, oatmeal with fixins, chocolate croissant, fritatta slices, toast with fixins, fresh fruit, orange juice for Patrick, water for me, coffee for both. On both days of our stay the breakfast was delicious, thoughtfully prepared, and beautifully arranged. Afterwards we visited the fire trough for a few minutes. Checked out. Drove home to San Francisco, stopping for gas and a car wash at Loop at 19th and Lincoln. There was a very long line at the car wash and a driver ahead of us who had left his car permitted another driver to cut in to the long line. And somewhere along the way we lost our receipt with the car wash code so we had to pay for it again. Patrick returned the rental car. I unpacked and snacked on the remaining half of a chocolate-cherry muffin from Basque. Patrick received a Good Eggs delivery while I napped. For dinner I prepared Good Eggs barley salad with spiced chickpeas, beets and feta. The meal is delicious, though Patrick warned me that the chickpeas never crisp for him like the instructions say they should in recipes like these. After dinner I rewatched part of Beyonce's Homecoming on Netflix instant watch.

Ran more of Beautiful Tour of Positano, Italy in 4K via Prowalk Tours on YouTube. Breakfast at home with Patrick: half orders of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, fresh raspberries, fresh banana slices; water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. The bus ride took over an hour, and at 3rd and 20th I walked the rest of the way because there was a long wait for a train. Door to door time was about 90 minutes. I'll have to reconsider this Bus 48 strategy for when our office moves to Mission Bay. Eric and I met with Julia M and Nicole F about the QBC and grad programs migration project. Afterwards Eric left for Parnassus. I ate an orange outdoors in the sun then caught the Blue shuttle to UCSF Mount Zion then the Orange shuttle to UCSF Laurel Heights. Lunch: I finished the chinese chicken salad from yesterday. Continued the build of the QBC and grad programs sites on pharm. Snack: sesame-flavored rice crackers, water. Began registering email newsletters. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: barley-based veggie burgers dressed with lettuce and tomato; seasoned curly fries; water with lime and orange wheels. Voted by mail. Played with BetterTouchTool configuration settings to understand them better.

Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights, mailing our ballots at the mailbox at 6th and California. Finished registering email newsletters. I advised that he use the logo expression in any of the provided colors he chose. Chatted with Susie about a new presentation build for Joe. Helped Joel resolve a Year 1995 problem with an old PDF form created by the registrar's office. Powerpoint presentation build. Altered BetterTouchTool configuration settings to match what I had set at home yesterday. Rode UberX to dinner at Son's Addition (2990 24th Street, across the street from Humphrey Slocombe) with Patrick : Cocktails: major/minor for Patrick (cappelletti, brut, lemon), 2018 Cantina Furlani bianco frizzante nosiola blend sparkling wine from Trento, Italy, for me. Appetizer: Patrick had a bacon-kimchi deviled egg (with green onion and black sesame seed). We also shared a small plate called broccoli and friends (with black garlic bagna cauda, fried sourdough crumbs, lemon, pecorino). Entrees: Patrick had roasted achiote half chicken (with fingerling potatoes, broccoli di ciccio, thyme jus). I had a Marin Sun Farms burger (with white cheddar, bacon-onion marmalade, iceberg lettuce, 3/8-inch-cut french fries with ketchup), medium. Dessert: Patrick had a coffee. We also shared chewy dark chocolate chip cookies with sea salt. $114.46 before a $20 tip. Our receipt said that Ting S was our server, but really we were served by multiple persons, and all provided very good service, even if it was a little too communicative at times (e.g., "Are you finished?" when the plates are completely empty). We enjoyed our visit very much. Rode UberX home. Recharge Medical web work: replaced two galleries with single images at Alyssa's request.

I failed to resolve the duplicate mount point problem and instead simply pointed iDrive at the placeholder-1 or placeholder-2 drive name which then worked for backing up to a hard drive on a network-connected computer where placeholder was the drive name. Sanded a wooden spoon to remove rough edges and splinters. Removed some sticky goop from our cocktail shaker. Goo Gone failed but Goof Off worked with a lot of elbow grease.
