Light brunch at home: small bowl of leftover fusilli with chicken. Rode Muni to 8th and Judah. Browsed in shops. Encountered Nina R and chatted briefly. Meet Phil and Drew at Tartine where we bought ham croissants. Walked to Starbucks for coffee for Drew. Walked to the Zine Fest that Nina told me about and browsed for a few minutes. Washed dishes. Performed admin tasks for home computers.

Mon Sep 2, 2019

Labor holiday. Pre-breakfast: granola with yogurt and blueberries, one pint of hot water. Walked and rode Muni to Cole Valley with Patrick. We had intended to brunch at Zazie. We put our names on the list and then walked to La Boulangerie and ate there instead. Ham and swiss cheese Parisian omelette with pommes tots with coffee for Patrick; egg, bacon, and white cheddar sandwich on brioche for me. The pomme tots are notable for being unusual; I haven't seen or tasted them anywhere else. They are made of potato, but the texture is soft and almost airy, like a pillow, with a slight crispness in only one spot. About $27. We returned to Zazie to cross our name off the list and found that we still wouldn't've been seated yet. Rode Muni to the Castro for some shopping but didn't buy anything. Rode Muni home. Nap for me. Dinner at home with Patrick: sausage and green pepper pizza. Dessert: Patrick had ice cream with almonds, I had two strawberry Twizzlers. Resolved more broken links for Lodestar. Watched The Expanse s1:e3 on Amazon Prime Video with Patrick. Edited childhood photos that I had scanned earlier. Late snack: Annie's mac and cheese made in a cup in the microwave, water. The mac and cheese was okay, but since it didn't taste like Kraft mac and cheese I won't buy it again. One Twizzler.

Walked to dinner at Il Casaro (415-875-9421, 235 Church Street) with Patrick and Chris D. We shared smoked burrata (with oven-roasted cherry tomato, arugula, bread), farro salad (with charred corn, green beans, cherry tomatoes, roasted peaches), and prosciutto pizza (with tomato sauce, mozzarella, prosciutto San Daniele, arugula, parmesan). Food was excellent. Patrick also had a chinotto which we found to have an interesting taste—citrus but bittersweety. Afterwards we visited Last Rites, Chris's first time there, second for Patrick and me. Chris had a Perfect Daiquiri (proprietary blended Mosswood Day rum, dry vermouth, Antica sweet vermouth, lime, sugar). Patrick had a Cadmael (bourbon, pineapple cordial, lemon, orange, pilsner). I had a Zombie Killer (exotic rum blend, lime, coconut, pineapple, grapefruit, falernum, and absinthe). Drinks were delicious. Patrick's included a smoldering stick of rosemary. Rode UberX home.

Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself one egg scrambled with thyme needles and Spice Ace rosemary powder with cheddar on toasted english muffin and a sliced nectarine on the side with one pint of hot water. Edited honors and awards to add missing honors and awards discovered in Synapse. Helped Joel with a question about iPhone chargers. Helped Susie with a Powerpoint presentation for Joe. Edited and published news for Grant and Levi. Walked and rode Muni to Polk Gulch. Met Drew at Harper & Rye for the Recharge Medical happy hour drinks. The rest of the clinic staff showed up later followed by Danny even later. Phil retrieved freshly made donut holes from Bob's Donuts nearby—so delicious I ate at least five of them. Drinks and service were both excellent. Our waitress was very accommodating and polite. In attendance: Drew, Ling, Nika, Lexi, Alex, Alyssa, Danny. Drinks included Tacoma & Bean (bourbon, amontillado sherry, chai tea, salted maple cherry), Kentucky Punch (bourbon, honey, aperol, sparkling wine, seltzer, rosemary), and Moonshine Punch (moonshine, cassis, lime, ginger beer, sparkling orange). The cocktail menu here seems particularly inventive. Afterwards, Danny, Phil, Drew, and I dined at Miss Saigon, reconnecting with Chi and Coung after a long time.

Sat Sep 7, 2019

House chores. Recharge Medical web work: small edits for Drew. Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself a mini quesadilla with mixed cheeses and diced green bell pepper, side of one banana, one pint of hot water. Showered. Walked and rode Muni to Church Street Station to meet Patrick who had left earlier in the day to work on the laptop in a cafe. Late lunch at Starbelly (415-252-7500, 3583 16th Street): fried chicken po' boy sandwich (which was not really a po' boy due to the hamburger bun) and ginger beer for Patrick, iced tea and fried chicken and waffles for me, water for both. $43.60 after a $6 tip for Ian. Food was very good, service was very good when it arrived but non-existent at times even though the restaurant was not entirely full. We walked in the Castro stopping at Art Attack SF to view art by David Puck which we liked before riding Muni home. Continued resolving broken links for Lodestar, also removed all links to bookstores because they required too much maintenance. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled salmon sandwiches with radish, arugula, and green goddess dressing. Dessert: Patrick's devil's food cake, mine with three maraschino cherries. I temporarily experienced Capgras delusion when Patrick asked me to help him finish his slice of chocolate cake. Caught up on journaling. Today while Patrick prepared dinner a radish accidentally flew into a hard-to-reach space, and some efforts to retrieve it failed.

Sun Sep 8, 2019

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled egg, hash brown with ketchup, grilled bratwurst, biscuit, hot earl gray tea. House chores: washed dishes, vacuumed. It's going to take some time to adjust to this new way of thinking about layouts. Initiated discussion with Taryn I about the #betterposter project. Walked and rode Muni home, stopping along the way at Cal-Mart for some groceries. Dinner at home with Patrick: lasagne that Patrick had made earlier and froze for keeping, hot water. Pantry organization.

Thu Sep 12, 2019

Ruined a Topman polo shirt while ironing because the tag wasn't the same heat rating as the rest of the shirt. The tag melted, and I ironed other parts of the shirt before I realized the problem. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Breakfast at Cafe Bellini: california on croissant, water. Gallup survey results meeting. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights with Eric. Cleaned my keyboard with water and a keyboard brush. Responded to email requests from JoAnne W and Angela K. Sent a new lab website kickoff meeting request to two new faculty members: Balyn Z and Jason S. Lunch: no oil no salt microwave popcorn. Encountered Box Sync problems and after several hours eventually resolved them on my own but for a few minutes there it seemed like I was going to lose 3 GB of data. Today was warm enough that I worked outside in the courtyard mostly in the shade for a few hours. Afternoon snack: one granola breakfast bar. Walked and rode Muni home. Continued playing The Witness on my iPad Pro. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken cacciatore with linguine, side arugula salad, herb slab, Hint water. New hire work for Edgar M. Lots of calendaring tasks since CPCS is on a different calendaring and email system. Improved the OSACA contact us page with newer images for the building facade and the map in the address section. More calendaring tasks. Began work on a #betterposter PowerPoint template. Stopped at Cal-Mart for a bouquet of flowers. Walked and rode Muni to 15th Avenue House for dinner with Sandip and a birthday celebration. Rode with Quyen, Dave, and Jonathan to Davies in St. Helena for a Red Wines Pre-release Party, meeting Phil, Drew, Romy, Chris, and Nate there. Aside from delicious wines, we enjoyed finger foods: salmon poke, cow sliders, mushroom crostini, fruit and cheese platters, chocolate chip cookies with salt, lamb chops. Afterwards we split up with the South Bay people leaving separately. Our car stopped at A&W for root beer floats before returning to 15th Avenue House. We rested for a bit before walking to dinner on Geary Boulevard. We tried first at a Chinese restaurant which was too crowded, then walked to Old Shanghai where we were seated quickly. Afterwards we returned to 15th Avenue House and chatted for a bit before bed. I returned home via UberX.

Sun Sep 15, 2019

Breakfast: granola with yogurt, blackberries, and sliced banana; one pint of hot water. I spent most of today continuing playing The Witness on my iPad Pro and washing dishes while Patrick prepared a dessert. We had had plans to spend time with Mom Ryan, but she wasn't feeling well enough for it, so we postponed. Lunch: grilled cheese sandwiches, tortilla chips, water. Walked to and from dinner at Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company (SRBC) with Patrick: we shared a fried chicken burger with regular fries and a kale caesar salad. To drink Patrick had a Herb Collins and I had a Sailor's Salvation. Food and drink were delicious. Service by Natasha T was very good. $63.34 before a $12 tip. Afterwards we returned home to finished watching Bad Times at the El Royale on Netflix DVD and eat slices of Thomas Keller's coconut cake that Patrick made earlier yesterday and today. We enjoyed the recipe; the cake is perfect but overall it turned out too sweet. We surmised that instead of topping with sweetened shredded coconut it would be better with unsweetened shredded coconut that is first toasted. We ate our cake with unsweetened chocolate chai. After the film I watched the making of the film and viewed the photo gallery. Washed dishes. Patrick's signing day.

Mon Sep 16, 2019

Breakfast: granola with yogurt and blackberries, one pint of hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Got my free flu shot on the first day it became available. Spent the day continuing work on a #betterposter PowerPoint template. No lunch. Rode Uber Pool to SoMa. Met Patrick for couples counseling. Rode UberX to dinner at Il Casaro with Patrick: aperol spritz (with prosecco, soda, and orange) for Patrick, Carlito's Way (tequila, mirto, ginger beer, lime juice) for me. We shared an order of fagiolini (blue lake bean tempura) and a broccoli and salsiccia white sauce pizza (with mozzarella, broccoli rabe, italian sausage, and provolone). While we dined I discovered a small shard of glass at the bottom of my water glass before it presented any risk to my health. We reported it to the manager, and we weren't concerned since it was caught before anything bad had happened. He was very apologetic and later in the meal we were told along with another apology that we could have dessert for free. It wasn't necessary, but we partook anyway and chose the tiramisu. $51.27 not counting the free dessert before a $10 tip. At the start of the meal there was some confusion because Patrick and I each received slightly different menus but this too did not present a significant problem, and we weren't concerned about it. Otherwise the meal was perfect. Service by Louise S was excellent. We'll return sometime soon, I hope. Rode Muni home. Patrick went to bed. I continued playing The Witness on my iPad Pro. Resolved broken links for Lodestar.

Thu Sep 19, 2019

Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself two eggs scrambled with fresh thyme and grated black pepper, one hash brown with ketchup, one chicken apple sausage link, one pint of hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. #betterposter followup with Sophia and Russ. Calendar management. Forwarded a request from Marley to Grant. Rebuild logo packages for the school and departments to include EMF and SVG file formats. Updated logo usage instructions on the web. No lunch; snacked on unsalted peanuts and unsalted pretzels. Installed Adobe updates and was very happy to see the new UI scaling feature which enables you to make the user interface elements larger. This helps a lot on larger displays. Reinvestigated font embedding and hyperlinks in SVG files. It looks like Nano can be used to solve the former problem. The jury is still out on the latter problem. Neither Adobe InDesign nor Adobe Illustrator seem to preserve hyperlinks when the destination is an SVG file. I discovered Vecta, and it does preserve the hyperlink, but it also adds target="_blank" to the link, which I do not want. Next to try: Omnigraffle and Visio. Walked and rode Muni to the Castro. Met Patrick for dinner at Thai House Express: two Thai iced teas, corn fritters to share. Patrick had fried chicken with sticky rice. I had beef noodle soup with egg noodles. No dessert. Afterwards we attended and enjoyed a panel discussion called In Search of Stonewall at the GLBT Historical Society moderated by Will Roscoe and with panelists Jewelle Gomez and Marc Stein. Patrick chatted briefly with Jewelle before it began, and I remet Jewelle and met Will.

Fri Sep 20, 2019

Attempted to walk and ride Muni to UCSF Mission Bay, but when I arrived at West Portal on the L-Taraval we were forced to alight and were notified that all trains in or out of the tunnel were stopped. About 200 or 300 people were waiting on the sidewalks outside of West Portal Station. It was an orderly chaos I think because many of us had encountered this scenario before. I canceled my Mission Bay meeting, got my fare refund from the booth, and left, waiting a long time for a bus ride home. Later I learned that the cause was an accidental power outage and that UCSF Mission Bay was without power as well. Sprint standup remotely. Spent most of today working on edits with James and Eric on content maintenance emails and with Eric on personnel titles documentation. I also spent time trying to get hyperlinks in SVG files with Vecta or Inkscape. Both failed for various reasons. Today my MacBook Pro keyboard started displaying repeated keys behavior, so I scheduled an appointment with the Genius Bar and am now constantly reviewing and repairing text I have typed. Lunch to go from Grubbin', sharing with Patrick a sweet mouth waterin' fried chicken sandwich and an order of large fries. Water to drink. Patrick ate inside; I ate in the back yard. Dinner at home with Patrick: pizza from the store's refrigerator, Hint water, hot water. Began watching Ocean's 8 on Netflix DVD with Patrick and popcorn. Mine was oil-free and salt-free. I added fresh minced thyme. Patrick's was Skinny Pop, and he had his with cayenne and butter powder. Recharge Medical work. Began preparing a new bio website for Patrick using Grav and an HTML5 UP theme called Landed.

Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself two eggs scrambled with fresh thyme and parsley, one hash brown without ketchup, one chicken apple sausage link, one pint of hot water. Mended a holey long sleeve knit shirt and a holey pair of corduroy jeans. Toenail care. Patrick and I attempted to find the lost radish in our kitchen and failed. I finished the last slice of coconut cake with hot earl gray tea. Made edits to Patrick's website following some Every Layout techniques, my first time using them. They worked surprisingly well. Dinner at home with Patrick: pork and beef bolognese with creamy polenta. Finished watching Ocean's 8 on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Patrick had coffee ($3.50). Water for both. $42.32 before an $8 tip. Food was delicious. Service by Ake was very good. The restaurant was packed and extremely noisy. Afterwards we ran errands. I stopped at a new garden shop called Plant Therapy in which every plant looked perfect. Then I bought some orchid supplies at Ace Hardware. We walked and rode Muni home. I napped awhile. Cocktails and snacks: gin variation of a Mr. 404, salted sunflower seeds, unsalted peanuts. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers from last night. My fortune: An admirer is concealing affection for you. Lucia also had Panda Express, and her fortune was: You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: pepperoni, green pepper, and black olive pizza using dough that was purchased refrigerated and was frozen for a few days in our freezer. Water to drink. For dessert Patrick tried a different microwave oven warm chocolate cake recipe which we ate with whipped cream. Lots of Recharge Medical work. Worked on Patrick's forthcoming website for himself. Patrick had club soda flavored with homemade masala syrup. Later I did more Recharge Medical web work. We had had plans to attend Cabaret Karaoke at Feinstein's but canceled at the last minute.

The fruitiritto was dense and rich, almost like a candy bar. Finished watching The Ballad of Buster Scruggs with Patrick on Netflix instant watch. I loved this film and interpreted many of its stories to relate to modern day problems. Afterwards we watched various clips on YouTube and reviewed the handful of photos I took today. Today was the first time in a long while since I used my Panasonic Lumix G6. Today I also helped Patrick by editing some small pieces of writing.

Mon Sep 30, 2019

Breakfast at home: Twisted Donut sesame bagel with cream cheese, one pint of hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights, taking my personal iPad Pro to work because Apple still has my MacBook Pro while its keyboard is serviced or replaced. Sprint standup. Realized that my Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD doesn't charge USB devices when no laptop is connected, so I had to borrow charging ports from Bo.
