Thu Jul 4, 2019

Fourth of July holiday. Pre-breakfast: a tiny bowl of yogurt with fresh blueberries, side of cherries. Troubleshot a problem with Patrick's MacBook Pro not recognizing his Bowers & Wilkins MM1 speakers; I think maybe an old Belkin USB hub has stopped functioning properly for data but it still works for charging. Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs with green onions, hash brown with ketchup, bread and butter, bacon. Washed dishes. Patrick cleaned the tub then bathed. Resolved a problem on Patrick's computer with the notification badge for Apple Calendar appearing even when no notifications were present by logging out of iCloud and logging back in. Formatted and printed a few of Mark Bittman's doughnut recipes from The New York Times for Patrick because when he printed them the page appeared blank. At first I used browser inspection tools to show and hide the elements I wanted then printed to PDF, but we got a better result by copying all the text and pasting into Word then formatting for two columns so that the entire recipe could fit on one page as much as possible. Nap. Shower. Long nap. Quick shower. Snack: tortilla chips. Watched the June 26 Democratic debate on YouTube with Patrick and popcorn. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken and andouille jambalaya for Patrick, leftover polenta with braciole for me, Hint water. Dessert: one medium piece each of Heavenly Taste toffee. Sat Jul 6, 2019

Breakfast at home: Wise Sons everything bagel with cream cheese and Spice Ace Jordanian zaatar, 8 ounces of orange juice, water. Adhered padding to the insides of my silver vinyl shoes opposite where I received blisters or bruises on Sunday following FootFitter stretching during the week. Sun Jul 7, 2019

Breakfast at home: colby jack, egg, and serrano ham on toasted english muffin; 7 ounces of pulpful orange juice; over a pint of hot water. CMS updates for home websites: LLGH, Tina's website, Corinna's website, including setting up schedulers for daily cache clears and monthly server-side backups. Created a simple one-page site for Patrick to replace the default files configuration after setting up his domain. Instead of using HTML5 Boilerplate, I used htmlshell.com. Patrick wanted Goudy Old Style, so I added that with Adobe Typekit, which was pretty easy. Finished watching the June 27 Democratic debate on YouTube with Patrick followed by Stephen Colbert's monologues following each night and AOC's guest appearance. Completed building and deploying a favicon for Patrick's new website. Vacuumed. Relearned theming in Grav and—I think—successfully deployed a customized Learn2 theme using the inheritance method. Today Patrick baked a Boston cream pie, which I think I learned only today is called a pie but is really a cake—so confusing. We ate one slice each in the early afternoon, then again after dinner, which was tacos with fixins including ground chicken with taco seasoning. Afterwards we watched Stranger Things s3:e1 then a few more Colbert clips on YouTube.

Walked and rode Muni home, stopping at Arizmendi along the way. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. Fri Jul 12, 2019

Handled CGEH edits from Jennifer E, then sent the site to MSOs and Plancomm for review. More Siteimprove work. Rode UberX to the Presidio, meeting Rob, Matthew, Akemi, and Lani who were in San Francisco today for a tour of Letterman Digital Arts—a benefit of Jeremy's internship with LucasArts. I met them on Main Post Lawn near The Commissary. Rob, Matthew, and Akemi were throwing a frisbee and a ball. Lani was wandering nearby. We all briefly visited in the Futures Without Violence building an excellent exhibit called Then They Came For Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans During WWII and the Demise of Civil Liberties. We picked up Jer at Letterman then tried to find parking then dinner, first having bad luck at Dim Sum Club which was closed for vacation, then Leopold's (a bit pricey). We returned to the car and drove to Ly's Vietnamese where we ate even though Rob had some trouble finding street parking nearby. Matt had beef satay pho (spicy). Akemi had garlic noodles with imperial rolls. Lani had crab paste noodle soup and hot tea. Rob had garlic noodles with (?). I had five spice chicken pho and hot tea. Waters all around. Kiana is starting 9th grade. Matt is starting his senior year and avoiding choosing colleges. He thinks he might major in psychology or environmental science. Afterwards we parked near Swensen's and stopped for ice cream before visiting the apartment that Jer and his housemate were renting for the summer. I met Rie, Brandon, and JT. (Heidi was out.) After they finished eating ice cream we visited the roof with the panoramic view, fogged in but still beautiful. We returned to the apartment and all the housemates were singing along to modern pop songs. We chatted briefly on the phone with Kiana who stayed home for this trip. Throughout the time we spent in the minivan Akemi counted Mini Coopers with a silver counter like one might use at an admissions gate. They drove me home before continuing on to their home. Amputagged recent new purchases: maroon linen shorts, a blue woven plaid scarf, a blue and white star neck warmer, a bag in the form of a denim puppy with a zippered pouch in its back.

Sat Jul 13, 2019

Handwashed a new blue woven plaid scarf. Breakfast at home with Patrick: grits and Mel's Kitchen Cafe biscuits, 8 ounces of orange juice, for me only: hot water. Patrick found that this biscuit recipe made perfect biscuits. Took Long Life Good Health web and email offline at Patrick's request and set the domain to not renew when it expires in May 2020. Began new work on a new favicon for Patrick's website to replace the white dog on red background made not too long ago. Lunch at home with Patrick: leftovers from his lunch yesterday: delivery from Kingdom of Dumpling via Uber Eats: pork and celery dumplings, shrimp and chive dumplings, a pancake of some kind. Continued favicon work. We abandoned the idea of a New Orleans gas lamp after some hours of attempt and instead did a simpler fleur-de-lis. Midafternoon meal and dinner: leftovers. Watched Stranger Things s3:e4 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick and popcorn. Late snack: crinkle-cut fries with ketchup, hot water. Performed iDrive maintenance, troubleshot a problem with a network volume failing to display folders and files despite mounting successfully. The problem was caused by overlapping problems: duplicate mount point and lost permissions. The problems were resolved by removing the duplicate mount point and then resetting permissions on the volume.

Sun Jul 14, 2019

Breakfast: leftover shrimp and chive pancake, hot water. Began emergency repotting of orchids due to fungus gnats. Early midmorning meal: leftover risotto, hot water. Discovered that unopened orchid potting medium that I had had for a long time had grown mold. Rode Muni to Sloat Garden Center for new medium, stopping at Java Beach for a ham and cheese croissant with hot water. Returned home via UberX because it was a 30-minute wait for the next train. Completed repotting. Took a defective Belkin USB hub out of service for Patrick and replaced it with a Plugable USB hub. More iDrive maintenance and babysitting. Snack: peanut butter on sourdough tartine. Watched Stranger Things s3:e5 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Scanned childhood photos. Watched Stranger Things s3:e6 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick followed by various clips on YouTube. Scanned childhood photos. Washed dishes.

Mon Jul 15, 2019

No breakfast. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Followup with Qualtrics theming inquiry. Reported false positive broken links to Siteimprove. For some 403 errors they said to just ignore them since those sites were blocking their bots. Followup with CGEH launch. Siteimprove work: encouraging people to remove CVs in PDF form and instead link to UCSF Profiles. Attempted to lunch at the JCC and found that the cafe has closed. They are planning to reopen with another vendor. Lunch at Smokin' Warehouse Barbecue. I knew I had had a mediocre experience at this restaurant in the past, but I thought I'd give them another try. I had the brisket sandwich with a side of mac and cheese. The mac and cheese had good flavor and texture but the pasta was too soft, almost smooshy. It seems like they cook the mac and cheese with an essence of jalapeno oil, not enough to be spicy, but it's distinctly there. Parts of the mac and cheese were unpleasantly hardened, as though it hadn't regularly been stirred while sitting on a burner. The sandwich was extremely disappointing. The bun was submarine-style, sesame-coated, and perfectly toasted. The brisket was piled on generously and in chunks so large that I decided I could not eat it with my hands—too messy. The brisket was not tender at all, and the flavorful and just-the-right-tang bbq sauce seemed to have been put on at the end rather than cooked through during the cooking process. Nothing else was included in the sandwich—no lettuce, tomato, mayo. I threw half of it in the trash. Service at the counter was exceptionally pleasant by today's standards. My stomach felt queasy for the next hour. Followup with Robert C about the OSACA's permissions problems with a server folder. Read RGD Ontario's Access Ability: A Practical Handbook on Accessible Graphic Design (free pdf). Rode Uber Pool to SoMa. Met Patrick for couples counseling. Rode UberX to the Castro. Dinner at Hi Tops with Patrick: Boylan cola for Patrick, busta move cocktail and water for me. We shared a chicken burger (the sauce is just a little too spicy for me) with fries and a half order of nachos. The nachos come with sliced jalapenos which we forgot to ask them to omit. We had too much food (as I had predicted); we finished the burger and fries but ate less than half the nachos—too full. Rode UberX home. Watched Anjelah Johnson's TED talk on YouTube with Patrick.

Tue Jul 16, 2019

I resolved it by unplugging the cable to the docking station then restarting the computer. No lunch. Afternoon snack: a handful of sunflower seeds. Dinner at home with Patrick: Yan-kit's chicken glazed in hoisin sauce with steamed white rice, Hint blackberry. Dessert: for Patrick: ice cream with one crumbled fudge-covered Oreo, for me: one red Twizzler and one fudge-covered Oreo. Watched Stranger Things s3:e7 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Fri Jul 19, 2019

Sensorio and wine tasting in Paso Robles day 1 of 3. Breakfast: an apple. Cut my hair, showered. Packed for a trip to Paso Robles for wine tasting and Bruce Munro's Sensorio, staying at a VRBO with Phil, Drew, Danny, Romy, Nate, Quyen, Dave N. Couldn't go: Chris was in Oregon, Wayne had family in from out of town. I got picked up around 1 pm. We took a strange Google Maps route that Phil followed, stopping for gas along the way. Grocery shopping at Albertson's. We met Quyen, Dave, and Nate at the VRBO. Dinner at the VRBO: various barbecued meats, tater tots, rice, salad, corn on the cob, french bread. Afterwards most of the group watched standup by Jo Koy on television.

Sat Jul 20, 2019

Sensorio and wine tasting in Paso Robles day 2 of 3. Breakfast in the VRBO. Wine tasting at L'Aventure, which Dave M had set up for us. We learned that at the nearby California Mid-state Fairgrounds Cardi B was playing tonight and Blake Shelton was playing tomorrow night. Tin City: Negranti Creamery for ice cream. Olive oil tasting at Olivas de Oro. Continued wine tasting at Levo. Lunch at The Canteen. We shared french fries, steak frites, black cod with ratatouille special, mushroom pizza, margherita pizza. Austin Hope. Krobar Distillery. Tooth and Nail Winery. Back to the VRBO. Nap. Quick dinner: leftovers. We visited Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio, an art installation by Bruce Munro in which many thousands of fiber optic lights filled a large, valley-like open space nestled among some trees. We arrived shortly after sunset, and there was still enough light to take photos of people and still see their faces. As the evening progressed we were immersed in darkness and the many pinpoints of light floating gently within globes atop plastic stems. It's an enchanting experience unlike anything I have seen before. I had forgotten my handwarmers, but it was not terribly cold this evening, and there was no chilly wind like some TripAdvisor reviews had mentioned. All the staff were exceptionally polite, and the event seemed to be very professionally run, considering that it appears to be a long-term temporary event. Jineanne Coderre performed and was great to hear. We walked to the end and back, enjoying the lights from different heights, angles, and vantage points. We had just eaten, so we didn't stop in the food and drink area. Back to the VRBO. We relaxed, some of us by the fireplace and some in the hot tub. I had a mint chocolate chip Klondike bar.

Sun Jul 21, 2019

Sensorio and wine tasting in Paso Robles day 3 of 3. Breakfast in the VRBO: grapes, cherries, leftovers. Packed, tidied, and departed the VRBO. We walked around Downtown City Park in Paso Robles. Visited the Paso Robles Historical Society. Wine tasting at Justin Winery's downtown tasting room, opened within the past year. Nate joined their wine club, and we enjoyed a charcuterie platter along with our tasting. We stopped briefly at Brown Butter Cookie Company to taste and did not buy. We lunched at Fish Gaucho, with excellent service by Josh. I had scallop tacos and a margarita. Phil drove us home, stopping at Soledad for gas. There was a long line at a probably-unpleasant, detached gas station restroom, so at Phil's suggestion I walked to the nearby Starbucks to use the restroom. Afterwards I ordered a drink, and there was a backlog of orders, so it took a few minutes longer than normal. Romy finished watching Stranger Things season 3 along the way. They dropped me at home then continued home. Dinner at home: indian food that Patrick had earlier ordered for delivery. Resolved cPanel error "Could not exec shell /bin/bash with errno = 2" via the solution found on farbyte.uk: edit crontab and specify full paths for everything. Did some file and directory housekeeping on my web hosting account. Caught up on journaling. Domain name reg maintenance for a home website. Troubleshot error "ssh_exchange_identification: read: Connection reset by peer" but didn't see any solutions that seemed to fit my case in which it happens sometimes but other times this error does not occur and the connection takes place successfully. My guess: server load.
