Breakfast at home: a pear. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Laurel Heights. Along the way I continued studying Spanish on Duolingo. Sprint standup. Spent all day working with Eric and by myself on the handoff of our Servint VPS to CP. Lunch at Vixi: hot water; caesar salad; warm bread with dipping sauce; spaghetti and beef and pork meatballs: about $13 before a $2 tip. Rode Uber Pool to the Mission. Drinks at Laszlo with Patrick: laszlo margaritas. Dinner and a movie—Wonder Woman 3D—at Alamo Drafthouse New Mission with Patrick: fried flounder sandwich with fries, the burger with fries, cold brew coffee for Patrick, grasshopper for me: $55 before a $10 tip for the food and drink. We received a lot more food than we could eat because the menu did not indicate that both sandwiches came with french fries. Lately I have been growing disenchanted with Uber. Long ago I often had to wait less than five minutes for a pickup. Now it's often double that or more, and the estimated pickup time is now always incorrectly too small. More and more I see Uber drivers' cars not moving for several minutes before a pickup. Today a driver stopped about 100 yards and down a small hill from my destination because it was easier for him to continue on his next trip. I alighted and rated him three stars. And then later in the day another driver stopped 200 yards away and around a corner expecting me to be in that wrong place. Three stars again. So after the film I switched to Lyft and timed the pickup, which resulted in a 4-minute wait for an estimated 3-minute pickup—a significant improvement over Uber, and likely the same price: $16 to home from the Mission.
Wed Jun 7, 2017
Breakfast at home: cheddar veggie scramble on croissant, hot water. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Parnassus. Along the way I continued studying Spanish on Duolingo. Sprint standup remotely from the Dean's Office. Helped Joel with a problem with his computer not recognizing his scanner. OSACA staff meeting. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Mount Zion. Lunch at San Francisco Athletic Company aka SFAC. This lunch was a disaster because there was only one person waiting tables and tending bar for the entire establishment. (There was one other food deliverator, though, but I never saw him taking orders or tending bar.) When I arrived I had not known this, and there were about 30 customers. I waited a long time for someone to bring me a menu. Service was friendly when it occurred. I had the $9 lunch special—your choice of two items from a list of four items. I chose the chicken sandwich and added a lemonade. While I ate I rarely saw my server, and about 15 new customers arrived. Two customers left after receiving no service for about 5 minutes, then going to the bar to get their own menus, then after receiving no service again for about 12 minutes. $13 with no tip, and I'll never visit here again. UCSF shuttle from Mount Zion to Laurel Heights. Identity retheme work and task followup. Rode Uber Pool home. Then we walked through the Arboretum, free admission. We exited near the Music Concourse and encountered the 11th Annual Golden Gate Park Band Festival at the Spreckels Temple of Music on the Music Concourse where we stayed a while to hear the Cupertino Symphonic Band play "Seventy-Six Trombones," an Irish washer woman's song, and a medley from West Side Story. We continued walking, encountering Lindy in the Park which had about only five people dancing. We continued walking to Stow Lake and the boathouse, then returned to the 8th Avenue exit to Fulton Street, where Danny had parked his scooter. Sunday Streets Sunset Golden Gate Park was happening today but we didn't want to walk that far to get to it. I rode Uber Pool to Hayes Valley and met Patrick at The Boxing Room specifically so that we could hear Gaucho play. They just started a break when we entered, but they were back in a seemingly short amount of time. Before we ate we browsed some in the shops in the neighborhood. Rode UberX home with Patrick. Nap. Slept in. Lazy Sunday at home, occasionally sunbathing and stretching in the back yard. Brunch: pastrami, cheddar, and green leaf lettuce with dijon on sourdough; coconut water. Troubleshot computer problems: "You can't open the application 'Mail.app' because it may be damaged or incomplete" was resolved by either restarting my computer or by waiting several hours or both—strange. Struggled for hours with problems with my iPad Pro while trying to load it with entertainment for our forthcoming trip. Here are some of my Google searches during that time: "ipad tv app white screen" (worked around by temporarily turning wifi off), "syncing apps ipad takes forever" and "itunes sign in takes forever" and "find my ipad turns back on by itself" and "there was an error connecting to the apple id server" (all resolved I think by resetting all iPad settings while keeping data), "ipad wallet missing" and "ipad apple pay missing" (resolved by reselecting U.S. English in Settings > General > Language & Region > iPad Language, and "ipad won't charge more than 96%" (unresolved, but the thing to try is to use the iPad until it's dead then charge it again).
