More researching and rewriting pages related to what we need to tell graduates about information security. 1-on-1 with Susie. Comm team meeting. More researching and rewriting pages related to what we need to tell graduates about information security. Responded to a request from Rebecca B about adding a link to some pages in her site. Lunch at A.G. Ferrari: roasted cauliflower, quinoa, grilled salmon: $10; water. Errand: Bryan's. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: quesadillas, sparkling water. Watched Superstore season 1 episode 11 (Labor) on Hulu with Patrick. My 3volt heated boots have not been working as well as they did when I first bought them, so tonight I opened a pair of portable heater packs called Mini-Mini that I had found in our disaster kit. They had expired in 2003 so I had little hope that they worked at all but I had read somewhere online that sometimes they still do work past the expiration date. To my surprise, these did work. They weren't hot, maybe a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the hottest I would expect this to be when new. Stuffed inside the toe of my boot, it felt slightly warmer and seemed uneven: hotter in some places, cooler in others, probably due to its restricted movement inside the toe of the boot.

Ran a speedtest.net speed test at 1:42 am on our Sonic Fiber and got 939 Mbps down and 106.90 Mbps up. I then ran a testmy.net speed test and got 198 Mbps down and 53 Mbps up. To bed (late). Cut my hair, showered. Rode Muni to Church Street Station. Brunch at Chow with Patrick and Mom Ryan with Christopher serving: coffee for all, veggie scramble for Patrick, carnitas for me, two eggs breakfast for Mom. My dish was too spicy, so I traded with Patrick. $63.12 after a $12 tip. We parted with Mom at Walgreen's and Patrick and I continued to the Castro. We separated to run errands. I bought plywood craft board for a project in which I am adding new bottoms to woven baskets so that the original bottoms of the baskets can become lids. Rode Muni home from Castro Street Station. Nap. Rode UberX ($17.57) to The Big 4 where I met Drew for a drink. Walked around downtown for a while. Had trouble meeting Paul at Aventine because Google Maps strangely took me 10 minutes in the wrong direction and I wasn't paying attention to whether it was right. Annoying, but I got a lot of walking done today, and I was thirsty when I finally met Paul. Aventine was too full, so we walked around in search of something less packed and ended up at 15 Romolo where we sat at table 13 and enjoyed a few drinks: picon punch for me, pimms cup for Paul, french fries, then one velvet jukebox each: $56.75 after a $10 tip. From our receipt, our server's name was Server. We met Danny, Drew, Phil, Quyen, and Dave for a special occasion dinner at Bix. Afterwards Paul and I were dropped at Paul's, and I continued on walking to the Castro. It was a rainy night but not terribly cold, and I had an umbrella. I encountered and chatted for several minutes with Rob F and Evan. We chatted about Noe Valley, dogs, Greenlake in Seattle. Rode Lyft Line home ($10.67).
Sat Mar 5, 2016
Brunch at home: two-egg mixed cheeses omelette, two slices of bacon, two hash browns, 6 ounces of carrot juice. Dropped off shoes to be cleaned at the shoe shop. Chatted with Sonic about my fiber installation. They had erroneously not closed my DSL service, so they said they will fix the problem and I will see a credit on my next bill. Nap. Attempted to order airline tickets to Drupalcon via UC Travel Center but failed due to a Connexus website error. Dinner at home with Patrick: cranberry beans with italian sausage over steamed white rice. Watched about half of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Recharge Spa work: more adding Walnut Creek hours and location. Late snack: tater tots with ketchup, 6 ounces of carrot juice.
Sun Mar 6, 2016
Slept in. Late breakfast at home: taco thing made from leftovers, 8 ounces each of orange juice and carrot juice. Baskets project: drilled holes in craft board, then sanded and stained them. Edited and uploaded photos. Made my first Paper drawing on my iPad Pro: inspired by a Starbucks gift card, I drew watercolor balloons with a happy birthday message. Snack: taralli from A.G. Ferrari. It's my first time having this Italian snack. They are bready crackers like pretzels but more savory with spices in addition to salt, thicker, less crunchy. I do not immediately like them much; maybe they will grow on me. Switched to tortilla chips. More work on Patrick's new website. Dinner at home with Patrick: our first Blue Apron meal: catfish meunière with ras el hanout collard greens and lentils; white wine. Everything went reasonably well except maybe a little too much onion in this dish. Finished watching Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Tuna salad sandwich full ($7) to go from Ladle and Leaf, ate during the Bridges Pharmacy meeting. Helped Rick resolve a webedit issue. Troubleshot issues on Don's laptop. Computer maintenance for the office: Chrome, Acrobat XI Pro, Windows Updates. Used Microsoft's Remote Desktop for iPad for the first time today. It worked perfectly and took only a little getting used to how the cursor and clicking worked. Couldn't figure out how to press Ctrl+Alt+End in order to select restart, so I ran shutdown -r instead. Rode Muni home, watching the end of Star Trek (2009) on my iPhone 6 Plus. Tested remote desktop on my iPad Pro from home with office computers. It worked fine. Configuring the VPN was somewhat painful. Dinner at home with Patrick: Blue Apron steaks au poivre with crispy fingerling potatoes and sautéed kale. This was our third Blue Apron meal, and every one has been perfect or nearly perfect so far. I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to others. The food quality has been excellent, particularly with the meats. The recipes are not necessarily easy to prepare. Patrick recommends reading all the way through the recipe before you begin. Dessert: pistachio brittle, Holy Gelato tiramisu gelato, shortbread cookie. More work on Patrick's new website: colors: added some of his identity red. Troubleshot why the Sonic Pace router gives me 870 down, 100 up and the T-Mobile Personal Cellspot (aka Asus TM-AC1900, aka Asus RT-AC68U) gives me 327 down, 100 up. If I can get the Cellspot to do true gigabit, I can save $9.50/month. Failed. Tried Asus support by both phone and online chat at 9:15 pm Pacific on a Tuesday and they were closed even though their hours said they should have been open (until 11 pm Pacific). Gave up for now. Chatted online briefly with quantum13.

New html email template build for the UFD (Update from the Dean) using Email on Acid's free fluid hybrid template. Began research for using SVG in html email. No lunch. Rode Lyft Line to Shotwell House. I think this is the evening when Paul was a few minutes late because Irene had called him to say, "You have a large package downstairs." Paul accepted both the compliment and the large package. Celebration dinner at Shotwell House with Danny, Romy, Drew, Phil, and Paul: Popeye's and Danny and Romy also prepared several dishes. Afterwards we got drinks at Forgery. The group consensus was that the drinks were weak and the hip hop music unpleasant and way too loud. The drink I had was called Cadiz: cumin-infused Ketel One vodka, manzanilla sherry. The taste was really odd, and I did not like it much. Paul and I said goodbye to the group, and we rode UberX to the Castro and barhopped: Badlands, Toad Hall, 440, The Cafe.
Sat Mar 12, 2016
Rode Muni to SoMa. Met Martin at The Grove Yerba Buena. I had the bacon breakfast sandwich platter with hash browns and a pot of earl gray tea ($18.44) which was delicious and satisfying. Walked to Shotwell House. Romy let me in. I had a cup of orange spice tea and napped. Drew arrived and we chatted and relaxed in the living room for a while. I rode Muni 22 then L home. Dinner at home with Patrick: I think we had leftovers.
Sun Mar 13, 2016
Breakfast: two eggs scrambled with hash brown and bacon leftovers that Patrick had brought home from eating out with Sam two days ago. Rode Lyft Line to Shotwell House. Fed the birds for the boys who are on holiday for a day. Purdy and Jasper fought for a few moments before I separated them. Purdy hid under the washer and the cabinetry again. Otherwise all went well. Lunch at Namu Gaji: chicken ramen, glass of soju. The order took an unusually long time to be delivered (maybe 30 minutes?), so someone from the restaurant brought me a complimentary second glass, which I loved. The ramen was worth the wait: a simple, light, chickeny broth appropriately salted, served with perfect slices of juicy chicken breast, bean sprouts, sesame seeds, and a square of seaweed. Yellowy noodles just the right firmness. Very satisfying. Next I got a kids sugar cone at Bi-Rite Creamery: boozy irish cream with chocolate cake, which was fantastic. Walked a bit in Dolores Park, my first time since the remodel. Walked to the Castro. Rode Muni L home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: seared salmon and spinach-walnut pesto with purple potato and red onion hash, water. Dessert: Bi-Rite orange olive oil cake, Holy Gelato honey lavender gelato. Folded laundry. Made reinforcement stitches to a light brown sweater with the sewing machine. Troubleshot a problem recovering my password from a clothing retailer website.

Sun Mar 20, 2016
Breakfast: one granny smith apple, water. Rode Muni to Embarcadero Station. Met Danny for brunch at Crystal Jade Jiang Nan at Four Embarcadero Center (415-399-1200). He gave me a blueberry-sesame muffin from Contraband. Pot of jasmine tea for two ($6); two orders of mixed flavors xiao loong bao, four per order, one each of: regular, vegetables, cheese, black truffle ($11.80 each or $23.60); applewood-roasted peking half duck ($30); spinach bean curd with mushrooms and vegetables ($16); half peking duck second course: shredded duck meat fried rice ($15). Total = $119.97 after an $18 tip. Crystal Jade Jiang Nan (CJJN) is refined dim sum and Chinese food in a modern setting with one of the best bar or restaurant views of the Ferry Building Marketplace. The space and decor is exquisite and almost perfect. We got the last four-top available indoors next to a window. These tables next to the window are the best in the house providing the most light, the best view, and protection from sun and rain. Servers were clearly trained to provide excellent service. They hit the mark on occasion but more frequently missed by some, whether in timing or rapport. The restaurant was less than a quarter full yet it was difficult to hear several of our servers who frequently did not speak loudly enough. Still, it was less noisy than the nearby alternative of Yank Sing Rincon Center, which permits very young children to play and shriek near the fountain. The XLB was perfectly wrapped, but the flavors were not strongly distinct enough to matter that you got four different ones. Thus I feel the XLB dish provided the least value. On the opposite end, the half duck provides the best value. It is wheeled tableside, and two servers spend four minutes to prepare ten small crepes filled with sauce, duck meat, and accompaniments. The crepes were very fresh and the perfect thickness. The tableside prep is fun to watch. There is clearly talent in the kitchen. All the food was perfectly prepared, but I did not feel it was worth the money we paid. It feels like the restaurant is still trying to find its footing, and I predict it will not do so. Danny left for appointments. I walked around downtown, shopped at Zara, stopped at the Apple Store but didn't buy anything, then rode Muni to Castro Street Station. Returned the part I purchased yesterday at Cliff's. Stopped at Bearbuck's for a beverage: tall London Fog tea latte. Rode Muni home. Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: we prepared Blue Apron cod kedgeree with basmati rice, eggs, and frizzled onion; red wine. So far this is Patrick's least favorite Blue Apron dish. Watched Pee-Wee's Big Holiday (2016) on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. This film is hilarious—go see it. Root beer barrels—mmmm. Made live Patrick's new website at http://longlifegoodhealth.org , built with Grav CMS. I used the theme called Deliver which was really troublesome to work with in figuring out the negative margins and positive paddings and so forth to get it to do what I needed. I don't think it's a problem with Grav, but rather one with just this theme. Certainly there could have been a lot more comments to explain things.
Mon Mar 21, 2016
Vacation day. Breakfast: three-fourths of a pear, sesame-blueberry muffin from Contraband fron Danny, 6 ounces of orange juice. The muffin was probably day-old, but I feel it was not cooked properly. The center was too gooey, as though it had not been cooked long enough or perhaps from the wrong balance or age of ingredients. Recharge Spa work: feedback on naming. Nap. Rode Muni L to Castro Street Station. Walked to 18th and Castro. Rode Muni 33 to the Mission, coincidentally encountering Andy, whom I was meeting for dinner. We ate at Gracias Madre. I had enchiladas mole and water. He rode Lyft Line home. I walked to the Castro and encountered Rob F. We chatted while we walked, and I left him at The Edge where I watched musicals at Musical Mondays, many of which I had never seen before. Rode Muni L home.
Tue Mar 22, 2016

Planned a brunch for the group with no name. Late lunch at home with Patrick: Blue Apron Cuban sandwiches with sweet plantain and kale salad. Nap. Rode Muni L downtown. Walked to The Barrel Room to meet Josh for dinner: iced tea for him, ginger beer for me, we shared: artisan cheese selection (fruit preserves, baguette, almonds, fruit: $22) , crispy brussels sprouts with bacon (meyer lemon, brussel almond pesto, parmesan: $9), sauteed prawns (white cheddar grits, herbs, spicy bell pepper coulis on the side: $18), roasted beet salad with mascarpone (burrata, walnuts, citrus vinaigrette, tarragon herb grocelle: $13). Service by Rachel was excellent. Pre-tip total: $75.04. Rode Muni N then Lyft Line home.
Wed Mar 23, 2016
Woke around 3 am and couldn't sleep, got up and made and ate tater tots with ketchup and water and returned to sleep. Woke. Vacation day. Ate a pear, then cheesy ravioli from a can. Recharge Spa work all day: added images to blog posts and blog landing page then added Facebook Open Graph metadata. Snack: blue corn tortilla chips, leftover duck fried rice, golden chai and ginger hot tea. Dinner at home with Patrick: Blue Apron chicken cacciatore with fettuccine and mushrooms, white wine. Late snack: mini pizza: salsa and mozz on english muffin.
Thu Mar 24, 2016
Vacation day. Slept in. Uninstalled the Brave web browser. Conversely to its intent, many pages either loaded very slowly or failed to load at all. I might try it again in a few months or so, but it simply failed to do what it advertised. Breakfast: instant espresso, an apple. Recharge Spa work: corrected a handful of small issues I encountered. Old short links to Google Maps failed with an error, but only on mobile. Corrected an attribution of an image we used on a blog post. Rode Lyft to the Mission, met Jef at 24th Street Station BART. We rode BART to downtown Berkeley, then visited the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). I saw works by Ruth Asawa and Buckminster Fuller, Pomo Indian baskets, and more. A nice surprise was a work on loan: Le Pont de l'Europe by Gustave Caillebotte. We encountered a friendly man named Jeremy from Seattle and chatted for a few minutes. Afterwards we ate an early dinner in the garden at Jupiter: beers, mushroom pizza, beet salad, with Ben serving. Gelato at Almare Gelato Italiano. I had coffee and pistachio. Afterwards we visited his place and after a brief house tour we watched Better Call Saul (season 1, episode 6, Five-O), Anjelah Johnson Not Fancy, and Arrested Development (season 1, episode 1, Pilot). Rode Lyft Line home.
Fri Mar 25, 2016
Vacation day. Slept in. Brunch with Patrick at Kingdom of Dumpling: shrimp and chive dumplings, green chive pancake, pork and string bean dumplings, shanghai soup dumplings, hot tea: $36.20 after a $7 tip. Service seemed to be noticeably better than upon previous visits. Food was terrific—no burnt items. I went alone to Walgreens for some items. Home. Worked on the baskets project, completing one basket. I thought for a few minutes I might need to buy a threader, but instead I wrapped the cord end with painter's tape and that worked perfectly. Recharge Spa work: feedback on naming. Late dinner: hot sesame noodle salad. Did more research on heating solutions for when I'm working at my desk, ordered a Lasko 100 and have a backup plan/project involving Flex Watt Heat Tape. Did research on how to handle my bookmarking after I abandon Delicious, decided to try Pinboard but then decided I wanted to clean up my bookmarks before signing up, so I spent a lot of time doing that. Pinboard seemed to have the most flexibility, transparency (not a lot but more than the alternatives), and third-party support. It costs money, but not a lot.
Sat Mar 26, 2016
Slept in. Instant espresso. Late lunch: star pasta in tomato cheese sauce from a can. Completed basket 2 of 2 in the baskets project. Organized bookmarks. Signed up for Pinboard but couldn't use it because I never received the activation email. Dinner at home with Patrick: tofu and vegetable curry with lemon basmati rice. Watched part of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. We discovered a vole again tonight and took no action.
Sun Mar 27, 2016
Woke too early. Last night's vole has disappeared. Recharge Spa work: advertisement stock photo advice. Breakfast: leftover avgolemono soup, leftover dim sum, 6 ounces of carrot juice, water. Back to bed. Ate an apple. Rode UberX to pick up Mom Ryan then rode to Shotwell House. Easter Brunch with Patrick, Mom Ryan, Jane, Wayne, Drew, Romy, Phil, Michael, Richard, Quyen, Dave. Danny was in Europe. Paul was also out of town. Rode UberX home, dropping Mom Ryan at her home. Finished watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. It has a few flaws, but overall I enjoyed it very much. Finished reading Moonwalking with Einstein by Joshua Foer via Kindle gift from Chris and Nate, enjoyable, recommended.
Mon Mar 28, 2016
Vacation day. Breakfast: leftovers. Yesterday I realized that links failed to open on my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 9.3. I had thought I had changed a setting to cause the problem, but I was unable to resolve the problem, which occurred in Safari and Chrome with content blockers disabled, and with the phone restarted and hard reset. Ironically, I was successful in opening a Google results page for the search of [links won't open iphone] but clicking links on this page failed to open any pages that had more information about links not opening on iPhone. Continued troubleshooting activating my Pinboard account. I never heard back from Maciej, but when I attempted to log in today it worked, so I successfully imported my Delicious bookmarks, did a spot check to confirm that notes and tags appeared to have imported successfully, successfully installed Pinner for Pinboard for iOS by Sam Oakley. Began tax filing. Dinner at home with Patrick: Blue Apron sumac-spiced salmon and labneh with freekeh, kale and almond salad, red wine. We watched Missy Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On" while eating. More tax filing.
