More home improvement. Brunch: rosemary ham and cheddar sandwich on sweet french roll, water. Watched Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi via Apple iTunes with Patrick. Patrick napped. Repaired a problem with my journal in that if I forget to create a new set of xml files for a new year the homepage will appear to hang. Snack: one tamale. Nap. Rode Lyft with Patrick to the Mission. Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens at the two-week-old Alamo Drafthouse New Mission at 2550 Mission Street. We saw a 10:30 pm showing. The theatre is beautiful and the adjoining Bear vs. Bull bar was packed and lively. It was odd to not see a concession stand in the lobby. Concessions are ordered at your seat and servers deliver the food and drink to you. The menu is large and excellent. Patrick had a chocolate malt shake, I had an iced tea. We shared a bowl of popcorn (served in stainless steel—nice!) and a pepperoni pizza. (They were out of fennel sausage pizza.) Tickets were about $10 each. Food and drink was $40.06. Service by Bryan was excellent. The film was really great. I enjoyed it very much. We like this theatre very much. Rode Uber home.
Sat Jan 2, 2016
Brunch by myself at Java Beach Cafe: bacon and egg pastie (which was kind of like an empanada except they said bacon but i thought it was ham), english breakfast tea. Walked to Ocean Beach. Shopping at Sloat Garden Center: $49.70. Gardening: removed new guinea impatiens that had been underperforming for months, planted oxalis sunset velvet, oxalis burgundy, dwarf iris (katherine hodgkins), and tulips (purple prince). Organized stuff. Moved a bookcase into the garage and organized some things in it. Dinner at home with Patrick: sauteed chicken breast, sauteed potatoes with garlic and onions, steamed broccoli, white wine. Made Tina's website live then resolved problems associated with it. Notably, I needed to upgrade from PHP 5.2 to PHP 5.6 and files needed to be 664 local and 644 on the server, and folders need to be 775 local and 755 on the server.
Sun Jan 3, 2016
Slept in. Cleaned the shower. Took a shower. Late lunch: cheddar and leftover ham on sweet french roll with lettuce, mayo, and mustard; water. Organized stuff. Watered the garden. Dinner at home with Patrick: a dish made from leftovers: cavatappi with chicken, broccoli, canneli beans; white wine. Opened my pre-release version of Descent: Underground and it crashed upon launch with "Error Trapped: An error occurred while attempting to verify requirements and initilize the launcher." I downloaded and installed two updates for it. After the updates installed, the game ran just fine for the most part. One of the full screen modes made my cursor behave offset from how it appeared, so I just used a different full screen mode and then all was fine. I played for about an hour getting accustomed to the controls again after having not played in years. The quality of the game seems excellent. I tried a "Vs. Bots" game but was quickly clobbered; I am not yet good enough to survive, and I wonder if an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Trackpad are not the best devices for gameplay.
Mon Jan 4, 2016

Followup with George M with my request for an API to course information. Chatted with Lisa about food and fitness. No lunch, but I snacked on Garrett caramel popcorn which was extraordinarily crispy. Dinner at home with Patrick: rosemary ham and cheddar sandwich, leftovers from his lunch at Crepevine with Sam. Watched on the web a 60 Minutes episode of Anderson Cooper interviewing Joey Alexander. Played part of The Room 2 on my iPad Pro with Patrick. Resolved some minor hyphenation issues with Tina's new website. Today I brought home holiday items that I wasn't able to bring home until now because I was sick for three days before the break: a Christmas card from Lucia, and gifts from Cindy: a Hershey's chocolate Santa, a cheery holiday bell, and a marble and wood cheese cutting board and a set of beverage napkins decorated with an illustration of wine bottles—quite a fine gift!

Installed Office 2016 for Mac at home, then installed updates for it. Today I brought home holiday items that I wasn't able to bring home until now because I was sick for three days before the break: a 16-ounce bottle of Zimmerman's homemade jam (Humboldt Medley); a gift card for Books, Inc.; and a handful of assorted chocolates and candies—sweet! Repaired my brown, white, black, and gray winter sweater from Zara Boys; one of the threads had come loose. Late snack: TJ's baked cheese crunchies, 8 ounces of apple juice. Encountered a problem in which MAMP Pro would hang with the spinner cursor upon launch after I changed the PHP version from 5.5 to 5.6.10 and restarted services. I tried a lot of things that failed before restarting my computer which seemed to fix it.
Wed Jan 6, 2016
Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Sprint standup by phone. Removed for Lucia an APC Back-UPS 500 VA and installed a Cyberpower CP1000AVRLCD. Lots of computer maintenance: PGP to DDPE transition, Office 2013 to Office 2016 upgrades, and more. Did a bunch of cable management. No lunch. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: hungarian goulash, water. Troubleshot problems with our internet connection. We thought at first that the problem was with sonic.net but I eliminated that possibility by connecting my iMac directly to the DSL modem, so I knew the problem had to lie with the T-Mobile Cellspot Router. I spent about two hours before I resolved it. Patrick had called sonic.net while I was at work and was unable to resolve it. I called T-Mobile after we ate dinner and was unable to resolve it (but it got me further along where I was later able to resolve it on my own.) It seems that either (a) when configuring you need to choose the 2.4 GHz instead of 5.0 GHz wireless (wifi) network—if you choose 5.0 it won't work for some reason, or (b) you need to remove wifi network configuration settings AND restart your device in order for the device to properly forget the settings. The woman I spoke with at T-Mobile didn't know what she was doing, but she helped enough. Dessert for each: two mini chocolate chip cookies from frozen dough, 8 ounces of whole milk. Late snack: rosemary ham and cheddar sandwich on sweet french roll with mayo, mustard, and lettuce; 10 ounces of carrot juice. Patrick unpacked our new Oster Versa blender today. It's huge compared to our previous one. We need to find a space for it.
Thu Jan 7, 2016
Repaired a printing problem on Patrick's computer by removing and reinstalling it on my computer (from which it is shared). Breakfast at home: leftover enchiladas, one english muffin with butter, 8 ounces of apple juice. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Lots of email followup. Encountered a problem in which I could see shared access to Rick's calendar in OWA but Apple Mail failed to recognize the calendar as shared. Coded the Dean's new year card html email and built the corresponding view in browser page. Microsites work: Jacobson subsites styling: make bold black instead of gray. No lunch. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Stopped briefly at the Dean's Office Administration and chatted with Kim and Sue. Drupal User Group meeting. Fri Jan 8, 2016
Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Listserv management. Microsites work. No lunch. Susie gave me a ride home. Again encountered "Update failed (error: 11)" with Google Chrome's About page. I recently encountered this error and resolved it with much difficulty but don't recall how. This time I noticed that wifi was not connected. Once I connected it then refreshed the chrome://help page the problem disappeared. Dinner at home with Patrick: falafel and pita. Watched part of the first episode of Master of None; I turned it off because I thought it wasn't funny enough. Sonic.net failed late this evening; no dial tone. Support was closed so there was nothing I could do to fix it.
Sat Jan 9, 2016
Breakfast: two-egg scramble, fried potatoes, 12 ounces of V8 juice. Troubleshot no dial tone on our telephone line; Sonic will sent a technician today. Organized, trashed, and shredded stuff. Lunch: one piece of garlic bread. Gathered expired medications for safe disposal. Scanned and edited Patrick's grandparents on his mom's side. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover falafel and pita, water. Dessert: various sweets including Godiva chocolate-dipped butter cookies, meringues, part of a milk chocolate Santa, hot chocolate. Our internet has been out all day. Sonic sent a technician who said that there was a problem at the central office and someone needed to physically do something there to resolve the problem. The internet should be back on by late tonight. If not, I can call Sonic in the morning. With no internet, we chose to watch a DVD we owned. Watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2005) on owned DVD with Patrick. Troubleshot internet connection problems. We now have a dial tone and pings work but traceroutes fail. Must call Sonic in the morning.
Sun Jan 10, 2016
Talked to Sonic support to troubleshoot our internet outage; the problem was with the T-Mobile Cellspot Router. I restarted my computer then logged in to the router interface then reran the quick setup and then it worked again. Talked with T-Mobile to ask them to resend the return label for the Cellspot Router that stopped working. Internet went out again. I resolved it again by restarting my computer then logging in to the router interface and rerunning the quick setup. Breakfast: an apple. Snack: some chia tortilla chips. Recharge Spa work: began adding a separate page for Kybella in preparation for the January newsletter which mentions it. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers. The first thing we made in our new blender was a cocktail with pumpkin ice cream, ice, bailey's, and whipped cream vodka—yum! Finished watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2005) on owned DVD with Patrick. More of the same Recharge Spa work. New clothes purchases from Asos arrived today, but delivery had taken three weeks and I had long ago lost excitement over my purchase that I didn't bother to open the package yet. We are spoiled by Amazon Prime, I guess.

Lunch: one slice of red velvet cake with vanilla frosting as part of an office celebration. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Ordered lots of supplies. Late meal: Lean Cuisine macaroni and beef (9.5 ounces). Dessert: one Ferrero-Rocher.
Thu Jan 14, 2016
Minor web updates for ASSP. Prepped and made live content changes for Matt J now chairing pharmchem. I was at Parnassus today and didn't have access to Photoshop when I realized I needed to crop photos to 1x1 and 3x4 width-height ratios, so I moved them to my iPhone 6 Plus via Box and cropped them there with Snapseed before returning them to Box and then uploading normally. Someday I'll be doing all my work from only an iOS device, I think. Html email work for Susie. Answered a question for Sandra S about web content editing. it.ucsf.edu advisory board meeting via WebEx, then sent a followup email about it. Had planned to watch the live feed of the IT tech forum but there was too much work to do; I'll watch it later. Rode Lyft to Urban Putt with Ben Q. I arrived first and had a hot toddy at the bar. The others arrived, and we enjoyed libations in the bar and secured a restaurant reservation. We played mini golf, splitting into two teams. Hole 11 was closed for maintenance. Team A was Paula, David, and Susie. Team B was Eric, James H, and me. Team B beat team A by a wide margin. Fun was had by all. For dinner, James had the chicken hero, Eric had poutine, Paula had empanadas, Susie had a spinach and arugula salad with chicken, David had root vegetables and a side of brussels sprouts, I had the cow burger, medium, with fries. Dessert: we shared two desserts: butterscotch pudding and cheesecake with morello cherries. Susie gave James and me a ride home. Recharge Spa work: html email, blog post editing and followup, responded to a request from Drew to alter urls. Added some code to my journal home page so that browsers don't cache the home page.

Lunch: a small bowl of leftover grilled potatoes with shredded cheese. Recharge Spa work: January news scheduled and delivered. Finished watching Women Who Kill (Amy Schumer, Rachel Feinstein, Nikki Glaser, and Marina Franklin) on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. We both enjoyed it. Patrick thought Schumer and Feinstein were better than the other two, but I thought all four did equally well. Patrick took a bath. Posted our Pottery Barn Jackson coffee table for sale on craigslist. Dinner at home with Patrick: saffron-mushroom risotto, dinner roll with butter, wine, water. Dessert: leftover carrot cake. Transcribed vacation journal notes from 1998 (Key West with Mikeob).
Sun Jan 17, 2016
Breakfast at home: egg, rosemary ham, and cheddar on english muffin; Caffe du Monde coffee via french press with whole milk. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 13, pass 2. Spent several hours trying to resolve a problem in which I was unable to find the original resolution of a panorama I had edited in Google Snapseed. Apple Image Capture shows the original image with the original dimensions, but when I open this image in Snapseed, it says it has smaller dimensions. Snapseed help and searching the web failed to provide a resolution that worked for me. After trying twice several hours apart, I gave up trying to resolve the problem. Before this, my Snapseed experience had been pretty good. The interface is a little cumbersome in some areas, but on the whole I was happy and impressed. Now I won't use Snapseed again. Dinner from Sprig: Chicken Pot Pie with Quinoa Pilaf ($13), South Carolina Pulled Pork with Black Eyed Peas ($12), Chocolate Chip Cookie ($3.25). Delivery by Frank in just under 30 minutes, which was the estimated time at order. My feedback to Sprig: "Hi, Billy, thank you for the $15 credit and the extra incentive to try Sprig. Our first order tonight with Spring was excellent. Driver Frank arrived on time, was notably polite, and repeated the order exactly. The food was delicious and perfectly prepared, and notably the food colors more vibrant than our Spoonrocket orders. The complimentary coconut truffle was divine and a memorable surprise. The only thing I can suggest for improvement is a minor one: in the followup email receipt the fonts are way too small (screenshots attached). Thanks again, please share my feedback with your team, and we’ll be happy to order again at our next need." Watched part of The Producers (2005) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. I recall seeing the Mel Brooks version of The Producers twice before. The first time I thought it was very funny. The second time I saw it years later I thought it was terrible. This show is hilarious, and I understand now why it was a runaway Broadway hit. Patrick made apricot sufganiyot today, so we ate a few of the small donuts in the evening.
Mon Jan 18, 2016
Coffee. Further amputagged new t-shirts from Asos. I had initially thought I needed to hem them shorter, but they seem to have shrunken sufficiently shorter after the first wash, which saves me about six hours of work. Discovered that some water had entered our apartment overnight, took steps to resolve the problem: absorbing water with old towels, pointing a small space heater to the lifted rug. Applied labels to our trash bins so that they have our street address and so that it's clear which are for the upstairs and downstairs units. The labels are custom bumper stickers from Zazzle and were pricey (about $100 for 24) but I wanted a solution that I thought would last a long time. I bought more than I needed immediately so that I wouldn't have to think about it later when they needed replacing and for the long-term cost savings. Laser or inkjet ink would not have withstood being outside for perhaps more than a few months, probably even with UV-protection lamination. This $100 should provide us with trash labeling for at least the next 12 years, if we're here that long. Brunch: peanut butter granola with unsweetened soy milk, water. Cut my hair, showered. Watched some LiveType demos and tutorials on YouTube. Affixed a power strip to the wall in my bedroom using two screws. Wanted to finish a project in the garage but realized my drill was at work. Organized stuff. Attempted to implement a temporary fix for the water entry problem but the area was too wet and dirty for anything to stick to it. Ed came over to examine the water entry problem then left. Dinner at home with Patrick: leek and cauliflower soup (aka blender soup). Dessert: sufganiyot with Firelit on the rocks. I spent part of today learning LiveType but decided to just use titles in iMovie. I had successfully imported into LiveType the movie with voiceover I had built in iTunes, but LiveType doesn't bring the audio with it. Without being able to hear the voiceover, it was very difficult for me to find a workflow that worked with LiveType. Finished watching The Producers (2005) on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Encountered noise problems again with our upstairs neighbors, wrote a letter to the landlord. Recharge Spa work: posted their first blog post. Upgraded DDPE and SEP on my iMac at home.

Rode with Phil, Drew, Danny, Romy, Peter, Wayne, and Paul to Max's Restaurant in Daly City for a birthday dinner. Richard, Michael, Quyen, and Dave met us there. We ordered too much food, and I enjoyed the meal. Afterwards we returned to Shotwell House and enjoyed a cake that Quyen and Dave had brought. I slept over.
Sun Jan 24, 2016
Slept in. We had planned brunch at the Cliff House but ate instead at The Liberties outside in the sun under a heat lamp. It was surprisingly warm and pleasant. Afterwards they dropped Danny and me in the Castro. Danny went to meet a friend. I walked a bit in the Castro before riding Lyft Line home. I also installed an ARKON Square 3M VHB Adhesive Security Plate with Slot for Cables to Lock Down Laptops, Tablets, Monitors and Other Devices (APVHBLOCK) on one of the hotel computer monitors and then attach the Kensington lock. It took about two minutes and seemed to work exactly as promised. The monitor's original plastic Kensington lock port had worn down enough to let the lock fall out, so this security plate was a slightly less expensive alternative to the Kensington device that does the same thing. No lunch. Rode Lyft to dinner at Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company with Patrick: mac and cheese bites ($7), two glasses of formiga priorat ($12 each), braised pork for Patrick ($27), chicken piccata ($18) for me. For dessert we shared pistachio toffee bark ($8) and star anise and cardamom creme brulee ($8). I also had a Kat's Call ($10) with dessert. I enjoyed everything. Patrick thought the braised pork was good but difficult to eat because of the bone. Parts fell off the bone but other parts did not. It could have been more tender. In the creme brulee he thought the star anise overpowered the cardamom although neither flavor was really that strong. $108 before an 18% tip for Vanessa who remembered us from last time. Rode Lyft Line home with Patrick.

Woke too early, tried to sleep in but didn't return to sleep. Light breakfast: a banana and a navel orange that had seeds (?!). Later Patrick and I walked to Noriega Street to dispose of unused medications at a pharmacy then ate lunch at Lanna Thai: Saturday special for both: chicken broth soup with cabbage, stuffed chicken, yellow curry chicken, steamed rice, hot tea for both. Walked home. Nap. Cut my hair, showered. Packed. Rode Lyft Line to Shotwell House. We drove to Sunnyvale to Quyen and Dave's for Marvin Raised Da Roof, a going away party for Marvin. The party was large—maybe 30 people? I met Rozina, Rochelle, and Ronithia and drank a cocktail called horse piss made by Luc. Dinner: pork loin sous vide, ribs, Vietnamese sandwiches, salad, fried rice, egg rolls, and more. Cake from (Costco?). To bed late.

Brunch prepared by Quyen and Dave: eggs, bacon, various fruits, pancakes, toast. We lounged, watching music videos and spoofs of music videos. Phil drove us to San Francisco. Rode Lyft Line home. Unpacked, rested, did some organizing, archiving, and tidying. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Chef Gao (formerly Taipei Restaurant) which delivered in about 50 minutes as expected: wor won ton soup, mu shu pork, honey walnut prawns, green onion pancakes, steamed white rice. We received a can of Coca-Cola for free; we can use it in cocktails, I guess. Patrick's fortune: You will step on the soil of many countries in your lifetime. My fortune: Your fondest dream will come true within this year. Continued editing a new novel by Patrick: chapter 16, pass 2; chapter 17, pass 1. Resolved a small styling problem with my journal on mobile devices.
