Breakfast at home: a giant breakfast burrito. Rode my bike to work. SCWG meeting. Stopped at the Jamba Juice grand opening and ordered a hot 16-ounce spiced chai with soy protein boost. This drink tasted more like soy than I had wanted. The person helping me was named Joseph. $3.50. Communications team meeting at Palio with Susie, Eric, and David for David's first day as a part-time employee. Reopened Fresno PID for Shirin. IRC upgrades project work. Sent Doug some suggestions on improving the Registar's website. Prepped a small edit for the graduation page for Cindy. Learned today that studies published in January 2011 find that the 7 plus or minus 2 rule for working memory is not correct and that it's more like 3 or 4. Email account setup and handoff for David. Followup with student DS about a listserv problem. Pushed live health insurance reimbursement edits for Lucia and Cindy. Updated apache to make a URL change for Chris W, then implemented redirects and reconfigured linkcheck as well. Calendar management. Notified students and SCWG that student org websites are down. Confirmed CAPSLEAD mailing list for Cindy. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Will: noodle soup with baby bok choy and mystery leafy vegetable. Watched 34 minutes of 2001: A Space Odyssey on Netflix instant watch with Will.
Wed Mar 2, 2011
Breakfast at home: toffee nut granola with nonfat milk. Telecommute day. Called AAA for Will for a jump start. The AAA man this time said that there must be something else wrong with the car, so Will accepted the jump and drove it to the Honda dealer, who will keep it overnight and figure out what's wrong. The AAA driver didn't make me do any paperwork—sweet! Started laundry. Pushed live a small web edit for Cindy: adding the University Store to the graduation page. On my iMac, I turned off Time Machine, installed PGP Desktop 10.1.1, then whole-disk-encrypted my main hard drive. The whole disk encryption process took pretty much the whole day—about 9 hours—for a 500 GB drive with 216 GB used. Supp app project work in Drupal all day. Installed the jQuery countdown module and got countdown timers working correctly on the instructions page as well as in the left sidebar. Lunch at home: pinto bean burrito with the usual toppings. More supp app Drupal work: cloned the prereqs content type because pharmacy and dentistry have slightly different requirements, repaired views broken by the cloning. Made lots of other adjustments. Dinner at Boudin with Will: turkey sandwich and soda for Will, tomato bread soup and med salad with baguette and hot water for me. (They were out of bread bowls.) Grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. Snack: one blood orange, one glass of white wine, sliced organic pink apple, hot chocolate with anise-almond biscotti.
Thu Mar 3, 2011
Weight training: pec crawl. Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced pink lady apple; cinnamon; California sage honey; nonfat milk. Rode my bike to work. Backed up the website to portable hard drives. Linkchecking. Listserv management. Submitted a ticket to resolve a problem in which David's info appeared in the GAL twice. Began setting up David's laptop: installed Firefox, Prey, KeePassX, Apple Software Updates, Office 2011, Office Updates, PGP Desktop, Whole Disk Encryption (WDE). Some students came by with bake sale items, so I bought an apple turnover and a cookie and ate them. Set up Chris W as a trusted contact with our VPS provider. IRC upgrades work: document review. Later I had lunch: Panda Express: panda bowl with chow mein and honey walnut shrimp. My fortune: An attractive visitor will bring joy to your home. Calendar management. Eric and I took the gray shuttle to Mission Bay then the lilac shuttle to Minnesota Street. John K organized the first Drupal users meeting which took place today at 654 Minnesota Street. It was a huge success in terms of attendance—about 40 people. Carl U talked about his experiences with Aegir and general discussion followed. Afterwards I chatted briefly with Richard T and Karen G. Some took off for a drink at a nearby bar, but after taking a few quick photos of the building's exterior I had to get back to Parnassus. Along the way I chatted with Alvin H. Lilac shuttle back to Mission Bay, then gray shuttle back to Parnassus. Did a few more things at my desk. 43 items in my inbox—very sad. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Will: bean thread noodle soup with vegetables and tofu. Afterwards we continued watching 2001: A Space Odyssey but did not finish.
Fri Mar 4, 2011
Breakfast at home: nonfat cottage cheese with maraschino cherries and fresh, diced bartlett pear. I didn't like this combination—the cherries were too sweet. Submitted a shared folder access request to ITS for Cindy, Lucia, and Tina. Edited the faculty graduation registration form for Cindy and Lisa. Redirected a LexiComp question from student VL to Rodney. Completed setup for David's laptop. Lots of scheduling related to the web redesign exploration meetings. Sent Catherine and David a followup of remaining link issues following the February 3 redesign of www.ucsf.edu. Lunch: leftover noodle soup. Listserv management. Reviewed our scope document. Web team teleconference: reviewed our scope document, just a few more minor revisions—all is well. Met with student HA—laptop freezes unpredictably. Learned about Microsoft Security Essentials. Rode my bike home. Shower. Dinner at Farallon with Drew, Danny, Phil, Romy, Will. I had the 1944 Mai Tai, Will had Death's Last Call. We shared the Louisiana prawn parfait (haas avocado, cucumber relish, cocktail sauce). I had seared Alaskan true cod (comice pear mezzaluna, yellowfoot chanterelles, meyer lemon-brown butter). Will had the grilled Long & Baily Farms duroc pork chop (butternut squash purée, glazed turnips, tondo balsamico). For dessert, the table shared the chocolate ice cream sandwich trio (Sightglass Sumatra coffee-chip, strawberry cheesecake, Himalayan black truffle) and 2 other desserts that I could not find on the online menu.

Weight training: I tried surface triceps extensions but this was too hard for me at waist level. Next I tried hip ups, and these were too easy for me, so I immediately switched to advanced hip ups which were better, harder. I also found I could easily do 1-minute hip ups with no problem. Hip ups are easier for me to do with shoes on. I ate nonfat cottage cheese and yogurt with berry granola. Using a guide of San Francisco walking tours I inherited from Chris and Nate (Walking San Francisco, Wilderness Press), Will and I took a walk in Bernal Heights starting at Precita Park where upon arrival about 100 skateboarders were making love to one particular piece of concrete. We hiked to the top of Bernal Heights Park and enjoyed the panoramic views and some flat pretzels from Trader Joe's. Lunch at Progressive Grounds with Will: tuna salad sandwich and blueberry-banana yogurt smoothie for Will, falafel wrap and iced chai for me. To home. I took a nap while Will played World of Warcraft. Weight training: yes no maybes. Dinner at home with Will: fresh, pan-fried, panko-encrusted trout for me; breaded shrimp from frozen for Will; mashed potatoes for both. Watched Transformers (2007) on Netflix DVD with Will. This film should be played as a drinking game: not counting the existence and transformation of the Transformers, drink every time something laughable, implausible, impossible, or nonsensical happens. Or when Sam Witwicky says, "No, no, no!"
Sun Mar 6, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced bartlett pear; cinnamon; California sage honey; nonfat milk; 12 ounces of generic V8. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos and one video to Flickr and YouTube. Reinstalled Growl and GrowlTunes because I only now realize that I haven't seen its popups for months. Web edits for Recharge for Drew. Prepped for editing for Patrick's novel. Lunch: leftover noodle soup. Snack: everything bagel from the freezer with soft cream cheese. Dinner at home with Will: burritos with spanish rice, refried beans, and the usual toppings. I made faux blueberry muffins for a box.
Mon Mar 7, 2011
Breakfast at home: a faux blueberry muffin. Rode my bike to work. Over the past few days I have noticed that Alfred is noticeably faster than Spotlight, and consequently I have been using it more than Spotlight because of that. Encountered a problem in which error message "calendar sharing is not available with the following entries because of permissions settings on your network" appears in Outlook 2007 for Windows when attempting to share my calendar with someone else. Solution: don't type the email address—select it from the global address list directory. Helped student JY with downloading SEP. Handed off SSL info to Eric. Lots of calendar management. Updated the key cabinet spreadsheet. Lunch: leftover noodle soup with tofu and vegetables. Updated a schedule for Lucia. Set up calendar sharing for David. Linkchecking. Learned today that ITS will stop blocking some audio and video filetypes as attachments in email. Reported an auth issue with my ability to edit the communicators website that Ed and Erik had set up. Handled a legal name change, which for me means updating our listservs and a spreadsheet on our network. Listserv management. Followup about online payments for PID not accepting MasterCard credit cards—Michael N seems to have resolve this problem with our provider. Web team meeting: new workspace issues, scope document review and processes. Dinner at home with Will: tortilla chips and tomato basil hummus, heirloom forbidden rice with gardein scallopini and steamed broccoli. Will also had a burrito. Made 2 versions of rice krispie treats: a small batch of cocoa and a normal-sized batch of fruity.
Tue Mar 8, 2011
Weight training: tried Mark Lauren's pec flies but they were too hard for me to keep my arms completely straight. Advanced hello darlings, pec crawl, inverse push ups. I realize today that the arch yoga pose I can easily do is what Mark Lauren calls an inverse push up. Breakfast at home: fat free cottage cheese, 2 faux blueberry muffins. Rode my bike to work. Began computer troubleshooting for student HL, spent time on it on and off all day. Linkchecking. Timesheet activities. Management activities. Restored the 2011-2012 academic calendar for Cindy. Listserv management. Online payment for PID followup. Snack: one Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie. Password retrieval for 2 OSACA accounts. Calendar management. Lunch #1: leftover noodle soup with tofu and veggies. Snack: two blood oranges. Sent David K feedback on the draft of the new UCSF banner (he calls it global navigation). Afternoon meal from the cafeteria: veggie burger and fries, one Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie. Eric D sent word that The Archive is now all migrated—w00t! Previously we had it on a very old Mac Mini running in an overhead bin at his desk. Now we're using virtual hosting provided by ITS. Eric has to do more work than we do with ServInt and the setup wasn't easy, but we're much better off than we were before. Chatted briefly over email with Carl U about web typography and his use of @font-face for qb3.org—it's pretty nice. Did some supp app Drupal work. Ordered books for David. About 33 items in my inbox. Down from 50 or so Friday and Monday. Rode my bike home. Snack: leftover mashed potatoes with salt and pepper. Weight training: door pull ups. Snack: fat free cottage cheese, 1 faux blueberry muffin, nonfat milk. Ever since I got my bike and started riding it regularly between work and home I had suspected that the trip computer that I bought was feeding me incorrect data since my 16-inch wheels were much smaller than regular bike wheels. However, after drawing my routes in Google Maps which measures the distances, I found that it matches pretty much exactly what Google says. I'm impressed!
Wed Mar 9, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced pink lady apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking. Management activities. Listserv management. Pharm care curriculum updates for Cindy. Helped student SC who correctly identified an email message as a scam. More computer troubleshooting for student HL, spent time on it on and off all day. Handed off connection info to Megan R, a new site owner for Shuvo's site. Lunch at the cafeteria: veggie slice of "signature pizza," 8-ounce spinach and tofu NannWich, pomegranate blue Honest Tea: $9.99 after FastPay discount and tax. I would not buy the pizza slice again because it was not hot enough and because the crust was tough. I would not buy the NaanWich again even though it tasted good because it was too hard to open—it had two laters of shrink wrap with a layer of cardboard in between. The cardboard wasn't problematic but trying to get shrink wrap off without damaging the sandwich was very difficult, and I imagine that someone with an impairment or a disability trying to do the same thing would have to give up. I finally got the shrink wrap off with the help of a sharp key on my keychain. Entering students updates for Joel and Shirin. Chatted briefly in email with Carl about the Drupal module called redirect. Helped Joel resolve a problem with sending email from PharmAdMIT—our password had changed. Reviewed our web redesign scope document. Computer software installs and maintenance for Lisa and Lucia. Still having trouble with my PGP passphrase not being recognized upon cold start, sent a message to Tran asking for help. Listserv management: set up the communicators team listserv. Rode my bike home. House chores: vacuuming. Made and photographed a rolotini. Dinner at home with Will.
Thu Mar 10, 2011
Weight training: swimmers, supermans, dirty dogs. Breakfast at home: nonfat cottage cheese, leftover burrito fixins. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking. Videoconferencing training. Listserv management. Updated the change of schedule page for Joel. Meeting setup followup with Tiffany F. Kiosk management. Small edit for Carol to the HSPR schedule page. More scope document review. Lunch: leftover stir fry with noodles. Missed the websteering lunch and attending the IT Services Meeting in person because I got pulled into an unexpected meeting that lasted 2 hours but had to get done. Banana to go from the cafeteria: $0.93. Muni to Church and Market. Dinner with some of The Syndicate at Chilango. I had sangria, fish tacos, and churros with hot chocolate. The fish tacos were spicy even though I asked and was told they were mild. The hot chocolate is drinking chocolate—many at our table including me mistakenly thought that it would be a thicker chocolate since our waiter said it was for dipping. Jeremy's birthday celebration at The Residence. Met or encountered Mike, Rob, Tim, James (city planner), Jason (ad agency), Bob (Muni, civil engineer), Andy, Scott, Jeremy, Emery, Herman, Mark, Matt, Kato, Wil, Jim, Michael (FontShop product manager), Scott, and many others. During the event, Jim received a CNN alert about a large earthquake hitting Japan. After sending a text message to Nate, I chatted briefly with him. Rode Muni home. Watched Japan earthquake news. To bed late.
Fri Mar 11, 2011
Rode Muni to work. Breakfast: breakfast burrito from Carmelina's, $3.90. Linkchecking. (I perform linkchecking just about every day even if I don't remember to include it in my journal. My linkcheck reports appear as startup pages in 4 separate tabs, so every time I open a new browser window I'm reminded to check them.) Pushed live Joel's change of course schedule changes. Edited the faculty list for Susie. Asked DLS to check on password protection upon screen saver wake for Sammie's computer. Staged the graduation ceremony pages for Cindy. Supp app project work in Drupal: submitted a support request and a feature request for jQuery Countdown, asked James and Joel clarifying questions, did some content type tweaks. More pharm care pages change requests for Cindy. Reported problems with vidconf in S-936 to Sue: LifeSize drops connection unexpectedly and repeatedly, need a solution before next Wednesday. Resent Sue my request for availability for S-936. Management activities. Met Will at work, dropped my backpack and bag off in his car trunk. Dinner with Will at Warakubune, about $25 before a $6 tip. Afterwards we went to Marck and Tilman's party. Met Alex, Josh, Joe, massage therapist Newton. To home.
Sat Mar 12, 2011
Slept in with Will. Brunch at home: scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast with butter, Joy of Cooking's quick sour cream coffee cake. I didn't have streusel. I added cinnamon and diced organic pink lady apples. Cut my hair. Dinner at home with Will: cheese tortelloni with Trader Joe's garlic and cheese breadsticks. Finished watching The Goonies on Netflix DVD, then watched the Cyndi Lauper video on the disc as well—so awful! I mean awfully entertaining. Late meal: Trader Joe's guilt-free mac and cheese. Also tried some Safeway frozen corn for the first time, but it was awful and I threw it away after 2 bites. Weight training: beat your boots. Weeded my Twitter followers. If I blocked you, it's probably because I didn't know who you were, you were just trying to get me to visit your business's URL, or your tweets weren't interesting. Began whole-disk-encrypting one of my external drives. Changed clocks.
Sun Mar 13, 2011
Weight training: supermans. Pre-breakfast with Will: apple cinnamon sour cream coffee cake. Breakfast with Will: scrambled egg, toast with peanut butter, hash browns, pear-mango smoothie. I also had nonfat cottage cheese and nonfat yogurt with berry granola. Began figuring out what to do for taxes. Errands: gasoline, grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. Will and I went to Phil's birthday party at Miss Saigon, dined at the half of the table with Shaun, Cricket, Tina, Ling, Romy.
Mon Mar 14, 2011
Breakfast at home: leftover pear-mango smoothie. Began taking Claritin. Rode the bus to work. Linkchecking. Answered a question from student AE about whether a particular message was legitimate or phishing. (This one seemed to be legitimate.) Troubleshot problems with Lisa's computer then reported it to DLS when I could not fix it. Turns out that DLS's BigFix was detecting SEP missing and repeatedly attempted to reinstall it. Tran fixed it. Lots of calendar management. Cindy gave the go-ahead to drill holes in desks in the IRC. Updated residency stats for Susie and Joyce. Password management. Lunch to go from Subway: 12-inch black forest ham sandwich with provolone, water. Supp app project work: InDesign prereq worksheets. Dinner at home with Will: we made vegetable soup. Weight training: door pull ups, yes no maybes.
Tue Mar 15, 2011
Breakfast at home: Claritin, can't remember what else. Rode the bus to work. Linkchecking. SCWG meeting. Staff meeting. Sent prereq worksheets to Joel and James for review. Ordered grommet covers and a SATA-to-USB adapter. Updated email setup pages to account for the recent ITS action of making ActiveSync enabled by default. Lunch #1: leftover vegetable soup. Lunch #2: leftover vegetable soup. Edited and began coding the new update from the dean for Susie. Researched a forthcoming printer purchase for Eric and David. Dinner at home with Will: leftover vegetable soup, crackers, Trader Joe's breaded shrimp from frozen, cocktail sauce. Washed and folded laundry. Washed new Lock & Lock containers for pantry organization.
Wed Mar 16, 2011
I dreamt last night I was visiting JY and Adrian at a new residence which happened to be a permanent residence inside a boutique hotel. Near a pool, bar, and restaurant there were massage tables draped with white towels, and JY invited us to lay down, which I did, finding small pillows, one of which was filled with scented flowers. Breakfast at home: toast with butter, nonfat milk, Claritin. Rode the bus to work. Linkchecking. Management activities. Tested videoconferencing. Lunch to go from Carmelina's with Eric: I got a mushroom quesadilla. Posted new news for Susie. Dinner at Eiji with Patrick. Afterwards we walked to 24 Hour Fitness. Patrick meets Will. Patrick went home. Will drove me and Will to my place. Will ate dinner: burritos. Watched literal videos on YouTube with Will. Weight training: advanced bench dips. I made green sugar cookies. Watched movie trailers on Front Row with Will.
Thu Mar 17, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic pink lady apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk; 12 ounces of generic V8. Rode the bus to work, buying spinach-artichoke chips along the way. Forgot to take Claritin. Linkchecking. Spent most of the day coding the new update from the dean. Met with Shiring about PID online payment. Lunch: St. Patrick's Day potluck with the office. Requested permission for photos for the new update from the dean. Rode my bike home. Took Claritin. Dinner at home with Will: burritos with the usual toppings. Watched Kick-Ass on Netflix DVD with Will. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr.
Fri Mar 18, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic pink lady apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk; 12 ounces of generic V8. Lunch to go from Panda Express. My fortune: Long life is in store for you. Supp app project work in Drupal: finished the review and submit page checks. Rode the bus home. Snack: leftover spinach lavash wrap. Dinner at home with Will: leftover organic heirloom forbidden rice with spinach, scallion, tofu and mushroom stir fry. Dessert: leftover green cheesecake with cherries. Watched Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work on Netflix instant watch—loved it. Great editing, and Joan is so honest, so raw, so insecure.
Sat Mar 19, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic granny smith apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk; leftover pumpkin-ginger muffin; 12 ounces of nonfat milk. Began preparing my tax returns. Snack: grilled cheddar cheese and tomato sandwich. Organized the pantry somewhat. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos to Flickr. Snack: popcorn. Prepared 2 pairs of pants for alteration. Chatted with Lani on the phone. Weight training: door pull ups. Separate snacks: nonfat cottage cheese, seaweed, a banana. David and Jeff's Cohabitation Celebration at their place. Met or encountered Tage, Jeff, Ming, Julian, Karl, Mark, Jeff, Miro, Jim. Alex's "I Heart SF Forever" Party at Lime. Met or encountered Damon, David, William, Chris N, Chris L, Alex, Juan-Carlos.
Sun Mar 20, 2011
Can't remember what I ate for breakfast. Taxes with Patrick. Midafternoon meal with Patrick at Kingdom of Dumpling. Polished shoes. Edited and uploaded Asia trip photos to Flickr. Vacuumed. Altered 2 pairs of new Bonobos pants: slactus olive 28x30 (PNT-FPO-XX2) and punxsutawney shadows 28x30 (PNT-MCS-XX3): original hem. These pants have more space in the thigh than I need, and they don't fit as well as pants at the boys department of Zara where the pants I buy need no alterations and are one-fifth the cost. I do like the unique button clasp on punxsutawney shadows, though. The materials and construction are of very good quality, but still very much overpriced. A lot of their designs are too bold in coloring for my taste, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Like almost everyone selling clothes, they use models that are bigger and huskier than my build, which means that their clothes look great on a model but look not-so-great on me. Snack: mango-pomegranate smoothie, water crackers and guacamole. Dinner at home with Will: orzo salad.
Mon Mar 21, 2011
Breakfast at home: a banana. Rode the bus to work, chatted with Ian at the bus stop. Continued graduation ceremony PDF and web work. Web team meeting. Lunch: mushroom-guacamole-cheese grilled sandwich from Palio, ate with Susie, unplanned. More graduation ceremony PDF and web work. Answered a question from student MS about Outlook setup. Fixed a small error in the breadcrumbs for the academic calendar for Lisa. Calendar management. Supp app followup with James. MCCA followup with Kurt G. Rode the bus home. Police were checking payment at 9th and Judah, the first time I've seen them do it at that stop. Dinner at home with Will: organic spaghetti with yellow bell peppers, onions, fresh basil, salt, pepper. Spent 5 hours trying to figure out how to do my taxes. To bed late.

More edits to the graduation ceremony pages. Management activities. Videoconferencing technical training with Michael W, Eric D, Rodney Y, and Mike F. Evaluated printer purchase choices with Eric. Snack: bagel with cream cheese. 1-on-1 meeting with Cindy. Snack: leftover tofu and vegetables stir-fry. Sent Cindy graduation ceremony pages updates for review. Continued work on a poster for the hallway for Cindy, but ran into a snag with CMYK conversion choice (DMM wants North American General Purpose 2) and with the custom transparency flattener trick for creating outlines failing to work as expected in InDesign CS5. I ended up just asking DMM if they really need me to create outlines. Management activities. Review of MCCA followup with Kurt. Helped student BP with a question about Windows 7. Web updates for the visitors page for Cindy and Joel. Checked in with Marie about a date for Homecoming this year. Linkchecking. Dinner at home with Will: mushroom risotto, white wine. Watched Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) on Netflix DVD with Will. Weight training: leg lifts.
Wed Mar 23, 2011
Chatted briefly with Cindy about UCSF email being down on match day—sounds bad, but I don't have any control over the system so there's nothing I can do. Breakfast at home: Arizmendi bran muffin, nonfat milk. Doctor phone appointment scheduled at 8:30 AM but he didn't call, so I hopped on the next bus and then he called around 9:00 AM so I asked him to call back later. Throughout the day I responded to messages from students emailing from their non-UCSF email accounts asking about the email system. ITS reported that some users were unable to log in to email. We don't have a good way to easily reach all students in a non-emergency without email. Helped Joel set up wireless on the white shared office laptop in S-936, then helped him understand why the problem he encountered existed. Finalized graduation ceremony page edits for Cindy and pushed them live. Management activities. Shared 2-tier logos with Eric. Lots of image work for the update from the dean for Susie, pushed the page live. Encountered a problem in which our stylesheets failed to load on the live and staging servers. Eric and I troubleshot but as we began the problem resolved itself. I asked Servint about it, but they could not help. More MCCA followup with Kurt G and Amanda M. Answered a question for Susie about currency notation style. Updated the homepage announcement for update for the dean for Susie. Very late lunch from Courtyard Cafe: veggie bento box, Vitamin Water (Energy). I appear to be the first person to properly name and add Courtyard Cafe to Foursquare and Loopt. Chatted briefly with Eric about HDMI cables and other S-936 issues. Spent 12 minutes on the supp app project resolving a problem with the prereqs view and the quarter units code. Dinner at home with Will: tortilla chips and guacamole; stir fry with firm tofu, baby bok choy, yellow onion, green onion.
Thu Mar 24, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic granny smith apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk. Rode the bus to work. More responding to messages from students emailing from their non-UCSF email accounts asking about the email system. It was not clear to me how long the outage lasted—it was some amount of time between 24 hours and 3 days. Pushed live the visitors calendar for Cindy. Calendar management. In researching a printer purchase, we were all set to purchase a Xerox 3220DN until I realized that Xerox offers only depot service and on-site coverage, both relatively expensive compared with HP's care pack next-business-day-exchange service. We don't have an easy way to drive a laserprinter to a service location, and $289 for 3 years of Xerox onsite service versus $75 for 3 years of HP return-by-mail and get-a-new-printer-tomorrow service is an easy choice. Some supp app work: 15 minutes. Submitted the congratulations poster for the hallway to DMM. It has been slow getting answers from them, even not counting the mail outage. Supp app work: 30 minutes. Helped Sue A with cropping a PDF of the update from the dean and posting it on the web. Checked in with Doug C and Orlando L about handling online payments and how to send them directly to his office. Lunch at Burgermeister: veggiemeister, roasted garlic fries, pink lemonade, about $12 + $2 round-trip bus fare. Eric and I spent several hours researching laptop connection problems with our various shared and non-shared office laptops. Essentially, the problem is that none of them connect at larger than 1024x768 to the brand new display in S-936, and our silver MacBook with Windows 7 in Boot Camp will not connect at all. This is probably a driver issue specific to Boot Camp and Windows 7 and this display, but I am not certain. All 3 of the laptops we tried do connect as expected at much higher resolutions in one of the S rooms. So afterwards I bought some HDMI-to-DVI cables which are expected to help. We'll see; I am not optimistic. Worked very late until 9 PM, spending 3 hours on the supp app project. Rode the bus home. Dinner at home: leftover stir fry and rice. Started becoming acquainted with the new features in Firefox 4. So far so good.
Fri Mar 25, 2011
UCSF holiday. Weight training: door pull ups. Breakfast at home: plain nonfat yogurt with TJ's country pumpkin spice granola and fresh, diced organic red apple; side of nonfat cottage cheese; hot water. Errands: dropped off ties at C&W Alterations (it's $20 per tie), bought coffee at Henry's House of Coffee (they sell only in half-pound increments), tried mailing a package to Hawaii at the UPS Store but they told me it would be about 60% cheaper via USPS so I went there instead, clothes shopping at Stonestown Galleria, doctor, Pier One Imports, BevMo. At Stonestown, for men's clothes, the smallest waist size at Banana Republic is 30 inches, the smallest waist size at Gap is 28 inches, and the smallest waist size at Hot Topic is 24 inches. Removed a few weeds from the front of the house. Dinner at home with Will: potato-tomato soup, toast.
Sat Mar 26, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced red apple; cinnamon; nonfat milk; hot water. Spent the whole day preparing tax returns, made a lot of progress. Recent changes to federal tax law make it now a headache to be in a domestic partnership. Patrick and I have not yet completed our paperwork for our separation because I don't enjoy paperwork. Additionally, if we amend our returns for 2007, 2008, and 2009, we're likely to get some money back, which means I have to do this work 3 times more after I am done filing taxes for this year. What a headache. Snack: 2 green sugar cookies, nonfat milk. Dinner at home with Will: combination pizza, iceberg lettuce salad with sliced organic apples, almonds, grated cheese, TJ's lowfat ranch dressing. Made coffee brownies from scratch with mocha java from Henry's House of Coffee. The brownies tasted good, but the consistency was too cakey.
Sun Mar 27, 2011
Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with fresh, diced organic red apple, almond powder, California sage honey, sliced almonds; nonfat milk. Recharge Spa web work for Drew. Troubleshot a problem in which I received the error "your photo could not be uploaded at this time (save) (don't save)" when attempting to upload a photo in the Facebook iPhone application: deleted the Facebook app from the iPhone, synched in iTunes, added the Facebook app from the iTunes store, synched in iTunes—this fixed it. Dinner at Taraval Okazu-Ya with Travis and Chris. I'm now using Firefox 4 everywhere.
Mon Mar 28, 2011
