Fri Mar 1, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, dried cherries, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Tested a new survey for Frances and Su. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Budget orgchart work. Edited and published a news story for Suzan. Changed the credit card info for our Otter account. Prepared pcard paperwork. Lunch from Ladle & Leaf: pair: corn chowder with thai peanut chicken salad. Water from my water bottle. Ate at desk rewatching John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch on Netflix. Upgraded Docker from 4.27.2 to 4.28.0—no issues. I seem to have resolved a problem with InDesign in which InDesign would fail to remember its window size after using Cmd+Tab to change to another app then Cmd+Tab back to InDesign. The solution I stumbled upon was to exit full screen mode then manually resize the window to the size I wanted. Orgchart work for Kim C and James J. Built two pipeline program pages for Lawrence. Attended the UCSF Town Hall on Zoom while running an errand to the post office. Newer postal mailboxes around town have recently changed. Previously when you inserted something you pulled a handle attached to a pivoting panel. Now when you insert something there is no more handle. The opening now is too small for the small 23andme box I needed to mail, so I dropped it off at the post office, handing it directly to an employee. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: yellow curry tofu with steamed rice, sparkling water for Patrick, hot water for me. We watched Reservation Dogs s2:e7 on Hulu Basic Plan then finished watching Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All on Netflix.

Sat Mar 2, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, dried cherries; hot water. House chores and home improvement: washed remaining dishes from last night that needed to soak, cleaned the bathroom, repaired the bathroom faucet which was not streaming properly by adding a washer and using new seal tape, washed more dishes, cleaned the kitchen faucet spray attachment. Patrick and I shared a youtiao from Simmone. Later, lunch: treats from Simmone: I had a zongzi. Patrick had a char siu bun. Water to drink. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Underdogs Tres: san diego burrito and agua fresca for Patrick, mahi mahi burrito no salsa no cabbage and water for me. We watched Reservation Dogs s2:e8 on Hulu Basic Plan and one video on YouTube. Patrick went to bed. I began playing Assemble With Care for iOS on my iPad Air, not remembering that I had played the free parts of this already on April 11, 2021. I again completed the free parts then deleted it. Computer updates, including for my work MacBook Pro, macOS Sonoma 14.1.1 to Sonoma 14.3.1 and MAMP PRO 6.8.1 to 6.9.0.

Sun Mar 3, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, dried cherries; hot water. We voted our mail-in ballots for the forthcoming election. Patrick and I walked to the Sunset Mercantile Farmers Market. We neglected to bring an umbrella because the forecast did not predict rain, and along the way there we sheltered next to a house during a rain shower that lasted about six minutes. The rain stopped, and we arrived at the market. We walked its length a few times, stopping for a lilikoi malasada at Ocean Malasada, a cafe au lait from Sunset Roasters, focaccia buns from Bear Flag Bakery. We lunched at Kunigi Noodle: Patrick had vegetable croquette with curry rice add chicken, I had chicken yakisoba. We walked to Andytown where Patrick got a mocha with a hat on it (whipped cream), I got a Lyons tea au lait, we shared a chocolate chip cookie. We walked home. Along the way we again got caught in light rain, but this time we had no place to shelter, so we pressed onward as quickly as we could. I rested. Completed computer updates. Dinner at home with Patrick: minestrone soup for me, tomato feta soup for Patrick, focaccia bun to share, water. We watched Reservation Dogs s2:e9 on Hulu Basic Plan. Zoom chat with Lani and Dex. Snack: one sumo orange.

Began work required by SCM to switch from pcard to purchase orders and to complete IT risk security assessments that somehow had not been completed in the past. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Mount Zion. Lunch at My Father's Kitchen: bun with imperial rolls and fish sauce not spicy, jasmine tea. Doctor appointment. Rode Muni to the Castro. Stopped briefly at Cafe de Casa which was a bit too full, so I walked to Philz Coffee where I got a Luca's Unplugged Blend lightly sweet with heavy cream. I encountered Patrick C and we chatted a bit, catching up and about geneology. I continued working. Patrick departed. Later I rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Moroccan chicken with olives and preserved lemons and warm focaccia. We watched Reservation Dogs s2:e10 (season finale) on Hulu Basic Plan.

Suzan and I visited the OSACA, meeting Kiyomi and chatting with Joel and Lauren A about floaty pens, branded pens and career fairs, the recent Madonna concert, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and more. Walked to lunch at Inle Burmese with Suzan: Suzan had coconut noodle soup with hot jasmine tea, I had mohinga fish noodle soup with vietnamese iced coffee. Our dishes included cilantro, chili flakes, cut Chinese donut, and lime—all on the side. All food and drink were delicious. We walked back to work. Orgchart followup with James J and Kim C. School orgchart followup with Lawrence, Lisa D, and Jeff P. Minor web page update for MAK Seed Award for Judy C. Rode Muni to Kerry and Mom Ryan's place to meet Patrick for dinner. We walked to Wilkommen. Patrick had a duo. I had a burger and fries. We each had a beer. We walked to Dumpling House intending to dine, but the line was much longer than we had expected. We instead dined across the street at Doppio Zero, sitting at the bar, which gave us a perfect view of the pizzamaking and the pizza oven. Sparkling water, appetizer: beets (yellow and red beets with truffle stracciatella cheese, balsamic olive oil and toasted hazelnut), formaggi and sage white pizza (fior di latte mozzarella cheese, gorgonzola cheese, fontina cheese, Parmesan cheese, fresh sage), cocktails: Dragon Aperol Spritz (aperol, prosecco, dragon fruit pure, and soda water) for Patrick, Bourbon in the City (bourbon Four Roses, simple syrup, lime juice, passion fruit, flow of hibiscus) for me. Afterwards, while awaiting an Uber ride home, a stranger approached us on the dark sidewalk and began talking to us, and we had an unusual, puzzling, and very brief discussion. Our ride arrived before it reached a logical conclusion, and away Patrick and I went. We hope he was okay. Our ride was a Tesla Model Y.

Sat Mar 9, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced half mango, blueberries; hot water. I washed dishes, watered the orchid, and did some cleaning in the bathroom. Later we walked to The San Francisco Wine Trading Company. They remodeled since the last time I was here, and the selection is huge, especially for this area. We bought a bottle of wine. Next we visited Apres Vous (415-943-9960, 345 Taraval Street). We purchased Bjorn Corn, a sweet bottled peach tea, and two sandwiches: tri-tip made to order and salmon pre-made. During the walk home, Patrick stopped at the library to check out some books. We lunched on the sandwiches and tea, saving the popcorn for later. The bread on both sandwiches was fresh but tough to tear and not suitable for sandwiches. Patrick found two small bones in his salmon sandwich. Otherwise they were delicious. Patrick napped. I installed a combo smoke and CO detector—an addition to all the other similar devices provided by our landlord. Repaired the red-on-clear tape for my Brother P-touch PT15. The tape was not feeding correctly, and I fixed it with a pair of tweezers while examining other tapes that were feeding correctly. Nap. Rode Lyft with Patrick to Gao Viet for dinner with Drew, Phil, Jonathan, Dave, Quyen, Nate, and Chris. Patrick and I arrived first and put our name in on the tablet at the entrance after I helped the woman before me figure out how it works—the interface is not very intuitive or easy. Patrick and I ordered drinks at the bar. The others arrived soon afterwards, and our table was ready. We shared appetizers then we each ordered main courses for ourselves. Chris and Nate picked up the bill. Afterwards they dropped off food at home while Patrick and I went ahead to Trad'r Sam. We sat in the back left adjacent to the restroom—not the best spot; it was bearable. A round of drinks later they were ready to head home for cake and more libations. We gave them the bottle of wine we bought earlier today. Patrick and I rode Uber home in a Tesla Model 3. Late snack: three toasted baguette slices with hummus.

Sun Mar 10, 2024

Daylight savings: spring forward. Had trouble sleeping last night. Slept in. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced half mango, blueberries; hot water. Afterwards Patrick made us blueberry smoothies with blueberries, milk, peanut butter, and vanilla paste. After returning from martial arts practice with Sam, Patrick napped while I weeded in the front and back of the house. Cleaned the bathroom. Cut my hair, showered. Cleaned the bathroom. Snack: tortilla chips, water. We watched some of the live pre-coverage of the Oscars on the ABC Bay Area app on Apple TV. Dinner at home with Patrick: creamy broccoli and spinach soup, masa biscuits from frozen, water. Afterwards we rewatched Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on Disney+ with Bjorn Corn classic (including nutritional yeast), which was good but not best-in-the-world like some reviews said. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: a chunk of warmed baguette, water.

Sahru K recently started as a project manager not specific to our team. Later Suzan and I met to discuss the NIH funding story and to begin reorganizing how we use Asana. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: mahi mahi burgers with French fries, both from frozen. Cocktails: bourbon orange crushes using an orange from Tim's yard via Suzan. I washed dishes. We watched the Oscars on Hulu Basic Plan. Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologue was absolutely fantastic. There were so many fun, funny, and wonderful moments and surprises including the streaker, the reunion, and so many speeches with people speaking from the heart. We watched until after Ryan Gosling's "I'm Just Ken" over-the-top, chef's-kiss-worthy performance. The technical production of the entire show was jaw-dropping. Patrick went to bed.

Lunch: I prepared for myself leftover mac and cheese with leftover shrimp and peas with parsley. Water to drink. Troubleshot problems with using Teams in Firefox and Chrome. Rode Muni to Kerry and Mom Ryan's place where I met Patrick. We walked to dinner at La Mediterranee (415-431-7210, 288 Noe Street): hot moroccan mint tea for both, Patrick had chicken kebab dinner with avgolemeno soup, I had middle eastern plate with avgolemeno soup and pomegranate chicken. Met with Nour M about PSR Symposium. Handed off Zoom info for town hall to ETS. For lunch I tried to eat at Loving Hut. No employee was at the counter when I entered. I waited a few minutes. Still no one. I sat at an empty table. I waited a few minutes. Still no one. I walked out. I got a california club sandwich with side salad and lemonade from Rain Tree Cafe (415-665-3633, 654 Irving Street) and walked to Golden Gate Park to eat. A group of children were training for soccer on the grass inside the baseball diamond while a man raked the dirt using something large attached to a truck. After work I rode Muni to Kerry and Mom Ryan's. I met Patrick there. It's Mom Ryan's birthday weekend and Patrick arranged for family members to surprise her with a visit. Tonight her three nieces Barbara, Michele, and Kristyn arrived, and she sure was surprised. Kerry and Mom Ryan remained at home for dinner while the rest of us went out. There were a few minutes where we thought their rental car was going to receive a parking ticket, but it did not. We walked first to Wilkommen, but it was too full. We walked along Market Street and eventually stopped at Starbelly which was pretty full but they had a spot for us at the community table. Drinks: white lotus (house blend of rums, lizard tail apertivo, coconut, pineapple, lime, smoked cinnamon), smoke show (mezcal, anejo tequila, amaro, house mole bitters), sangria (ruby port, seasonal fruit, oranges, sweet spices), iced tea, tempranillo. We shared: little gems salad with grilled cucumbers, golden raisins, Point Reyes blue cheese; butternut squash dumplings with brown butter, lemon, sage, and shaved grana; spicy thai-spiced pork sausage with thai herb salad and chili crunch; italian sausage and tellagio pizza with pesto and cherry tomatoes; brussels sprouts with bacon and balsamic-honey glaze. Michele had an angus burger and fries with pickle and grilled sesame seed challah bun. All food and drink were delicious. Service was mostly good. I wondered why they didn't clear some serving plates that had sat empty a long time. Afterwards Patrick and I rode Uber home.

Installed a new hose attachment to make cleaning in the bathtub easier. Midmorning snack: Patrick and I shared a pork bun. Lunch by myself: leftover pizza from last night. Patrick napped while I set the table and ate a mini pepperoni pizza from frozen. I napped. We held a party for Mom Ryan. In attendance: Mom Ryan, Kerry, Patrick, Gerry, Barbara, Kristyn, Michele, and me. Patrick had Central Grocery muffalettas shipped in. He also made Camellia red beans and rice. Drinks included unsweetened black tea, unsweetened green tea, watermelon mint sparkling water, water, red wine, white wine. The chocolate mousse cake was from Schubert's. Mom Ryan opened many, many gifts. There was much reminiscing. She received Facetime or telephone calls from many others. They all departed. Patrick and I cleaned and reset the table to the original position and size. Rested briefly. I rode Lyft to Oasis where I met Barbara, Kristyn, and Michele. Patrick did not attend because he needed rest for tomorrow. We attended Princess: JLO w/ Jessica Wild: A Disco Dance Party, Drag Spectacular + Tribute To Jlo! Celebrating her new album 'This Is Me...Now" + her biggest hits! Hosted by Kochina Rude + Lisa Frankenstein, with DJ Delafe. Starring: Jessica Wild (RPDR AS8), Jax (RPDR S16), Mara Guevara, Betty Fresas, Major Hammy, Frida Mont, Beef Cakes, Sally Limón; Go-Gos: The Little King, Edie Eve, Jessie Pegasis; Stage Dad: Otter; Sponsored by Milagro Tequila. We arrived at about 9:45 p.m. and there was a very short line. Doors opened at 10 but the show did not start until 11:30. We got drinks: femme fatale drink specials for Kristyn and Barbara, canned water for Michele, margarita for me. On the patio under a heat lamp we met and chatted a long time with Gigi Gemini and Sarah. We talked about Las Vegas, Drag Race, international drag, Deluxe Queer, and more. The show began, and we all went inside. We were well entertained. Performers lipsynced and made us laugh. Dancers gogoed, and Kristyn tipped one she especially liked. Later Sarah bought Barbara's second drink, and she also briefly introduced me to Lily. Kristyn, Barbara, and Michele left at the intermission. I left with them to see them off then returned to the bar for a bit before riding Lyft home. To bed late—around 1:30 a.m.

Sun Mar 17, 2024

Skipped oatmeal this morning because Patrick woke me around 8 and Gerry was picking us up at 9:30. I showered, ate half a banana, and we departed for Kerry and Mom Ryan's. In attendance: Mom Ryan, Kerry, Patrick, Gerry, Michele, Barbara, and me. Kristyn had intended to attend but could not due to a change in her flight plans. She had to take an earlier flight than expected if she were to catch her connecting flight later in the day. We brought the remaining half of yesterday's cake. Mom blew out candles, and we ate the rest. Afterwards we all went to lunch at New Big Lantern (415-863-8100, 3170 16th Street): onion pancake, pan-fried pork bun, bacon shrimp roll, foil-wrapped chicken (which turned out to be quite spicy), steamed bbq pork bun, crab cheese puff, zongzi, vegetarian potstickers, general's chicken less hot, chicken fried rice, jasmine tea, beer, iced tea, water. All food and drink was delicious. Judy was our efficient server. We had unexpectedly ordered too much food. Patrick's fortune: Someone can read your mind. My fortune: Right now you need to be patient. Afterwards Gerry gave Patrick and me a ride home. Patrick took a short Saints and Sinners panel preparation telephone call. Rested. We packed for a trip. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover muffalettas, leftover red beans and rice, water. Continued packing. We watched various YouTube videos then The Simpsons s32:e17 on Disney+. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Followup with Sebastian E at Siteimprove about Siteimprove Help and font sizes. Met in Zoom with Karen, Sahru, and Suzan about the forthcoming town hall. Followup with Nadav A about migrating MPRAbase to UCSF IT. Created a map for a new pipeline program page for Igor M then added two other images and sent it to him for review. Lunch at Crepevine with Suzan. She had a chai latte and bangkok salad (organic mixed greens served with ginger curry marinated grilled chicken, red onions, mint, shredded carrots, cilantro, roasted peanuts and spicy lemongrass vinaigrette). I had the San Francisco crepe (smoked salmon, capers, red onions, spinach, dijon, dill havarti) with potatoes and water to drink. Granted Lawrence permissions for the town hall listserv. Approved and confirmed send for the Les Benet Event invitation sent by LeeAnn M. Reviewed and published an NIH funding news story for Suzan. We also reviewed and reposted the CERSI story to include a missing featured image. Last week dragging and dropping an image into an Asana task failed but today it works. Strange. Confirmed that the custom UCSF Search module was enabled on all dev sites. Rode Muni home by way of West Portal to dispose of expired medications at Walgreens and to pick up a DVD at the library. Encountered Nicole F on the sidewalk and briefly said hello. She was on her way to dinner at Trattoria di Vittorio. Just outside the library a large crowd had gathered because three members of a family were killed after being struck by a vehicle while waiting for a bus. It's the same location that Patrick and I have waited for a bus many, many times. I paused for a few moments before continuing home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers from my lunch today and our lunch yesterday. Water to drink. I also had red wine. I washed dishes. We watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I continued packing until late. Today on a large financial company's website I encountered trouble performing a task that I needed to do. The interface simply didn't make it possible. When I connected to the live chat support, I was surprised to find an AI bot introduce itself and proceed to ask me questions about what I needed. I was surprised again when within about a minute the bot told me that my impossible task was done. I checked, and it was correct.

Tue Mar 19, 2024

Vacation day 1 of 9. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced half banana; hot water. Patrick and I rode UberX to SFO for a 10:44 a.m. United Airlines flight 2356 to New Orleans. During the flight we began watching standup comedy downloaded from Netflix but did not like two different shows until we began watching Hari Kondabolu: Warn Your Relatives. Patrick is attending the Saints and Sinners Festival—an LGBTQ writers conference at Hotel Monteleone, and I'm going along for the ride, including the festival. At SFO, we checked one large bag, and that process was very fast and easy. We each carried one carry-on suitcase and one personal bag. Barbara's return flight to Boston was just a few minutes later than ours, and she came to our gate to chat a few minutes before we all departed. Patrick purchased sandwiches and bottled water from Klein's Deli just before boarding, saving the meal for the flight. During the flight we also watched Chris Distefano: Speshy Weshy (2022) downloaded from Netflix. In New Orleans, our Uber ride estimate was about $100. Instead we rode Lyft to The Old No. 77 for less than half that price. We unpacked in room 340. We encountered many issues with the room. The desk lamp, ceiling fan lamp, and Tivoli Model 3 were not working and the toilet seat was loose. We reported the issues and walked in the neighborhood a few minutes before dining at Compère Lapin in our hotel. Cocktails: Flowers for Jackie (rye and sons whiskey, sorel, burlesque bitters, star anise) for Patrick, Home Is The Sailor (botanist gin, manzanilla sherry, vermouth, umami) for me. Buttermilk biscuits with honey butter and bacon butter (2 per order); green papaya salad with mirliton and tamarind vinaigrette; fried chicken with coconut grits and peanuts and jerk honey butter; scialatielli with gulf shrimp and rundown sauce. Dessert: chocolate cake with passionfruit and curry granola. We walked to Rouse's Market for bottled water, sumo oranges, pears, bananas, Kashi high fiber cereal, milk. We watched an episode of Chopped. Patrick ate a pear and went to bed. I stayed up not much longer. Internet speed at The Old 77 is 9 Mbps down, 6 up—just okay.

Wed Mar 20, 2024

Vacation day 2 of 9. In The Old 77. Coffee with half and half for Patrick from Tout La, the coffee bar in the hotel. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. We walked to and visited the National World War II Museum, which seems to have some of the slowest elevators in the world along with some of the best WWII exhibits in the world. Afterwards we walked to and lunched at St. James Cheese Company: smokey blue sandwich with roast beef and smoked blue cheese; blueberry hill salad with smoked chicken breast, marcona almonds, and blueberries. iced tea for Patrick, Arnold Palmer for me. Our counter service order delivery took longer than expected. Patrick asked them and they said they were busy and to just wait. A long time passed. Patrick asked them again and they said that our order was missing. Eventually we got our order, and it was revealed that the person at the register had put the wrong number on the ticket, and whoever got the other order had coincidentally ordered the exact same thing and so they simply ignored the dupe. The food was tasty, but we wasted a lot of time because of the error. We walked to and visited the Contemporary Art Center where we saw Gestures of Refusal: Black Photography and Visual Culture. We rode Lyft to the New Orleans Public Library for Patrick to perform a genealogy search in newspapers to identify where his father's father was interred. We walked to the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience and learned they do not have a cafe onsite, so we walked to nearby Mammoth Coffee for pourover iced coffee and bottled water. We returned to and visited the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience. We walked to and sat at the free music festival called Wednesday at the Square in Lafayette Square. The opener for Flow Tribe was SaxKixAve, and it wasn't to our preference so we departed. We had some time to kill before dinner, so we got drinks at a rooftop bar in the Higgins Hotel near the World War II Museum called Rosie's on the Roof which had a Rosie the Riveter theme and some nice views. Pistol Packin' Mama (campfire blend of bourbons, ginger, honey, lemon juice) for Patrick, Skylark (gin, creme de violette, rose water, lemon juice) for me. We initially thought we would have only one round, but it turned into two. Round 2: same for Patrick, Tico Tico (reposado tequila, orange curacao, aperitivo, passionfruit, chamomile, lime juice) for me. Walked to dinner at Cochon Restaurant, sitting at the back along S Diamond Street: sparkling water; boudin balls; shrimp and deviled egg gumbo; hog's head cheese with crackers, pickles, and house mustard; fried crawfish pie; Louisiana cochon with braised green beans, pickled pears, and pork jus. Walked back to the hotel. We channel-surfed the television but found nothing we liked, so on our iPad Air we rewatched the end of Chris Distefano: Speshy Weshy because we had gotten groggy the first time we watched.

Vacation day 3 of 9. In The Old 77. Woke to the sound of garbage trucks. Ate one sumo orange. I visited the hotel gym for a while. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. Patrick discovered another room problem: a staple sticking up from the floor. A woman at the front desk graciously apologized and gave us a small compensation for which we were grateful. Patrick bought RTA Jazz passes for us, and we walked and rode the ferry to Algiers Point. Second breakfast at Congregation Coffee: we shared one chocolate croissant and a hot honey tahini latte. Ferry return. In the French Quarter we stopped briefly to watch a band play and walked to and visited The Historic New Orleans Collection, seeing mostly Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art and some of the French Quarter History Galleries. We walked Royal Street across the French Quarter, encountering Karl S with whom we chatted briefly. Patrick and I continued to Frenchman Street and lunched at Ayu: potato leek soup with bread, egg salad croissant sandwich, canned sparkling water. All food and drink were delicious. We walked to New Orleans Jazz Museum for Piano Hour presented by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park: Saskia's Little Big Band. The performance was delightful. Upon exiting we encountered light rain that had been predicted to start later than it actually did. We walked part of the French Market under cover then waited for the streetcar at Ursulines Station. We rode to North Peters Station then walked the rest of the way to The Old 77, stopping briefly at Lafayette Mini Mart for bottled water. Patrick napped while I caught up on journaling. Rode Lyft to Commander's Palace where we met writer Lucian C for dinner. This was our first time meeting in person. We talked about writing and editing, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, graphic design, the history of desktop publishing, web design, various writers, pronunciation of words, Toronto and Canada, and more. Afterwards we three rode Lyft to Bar Marilou and had a round of drinks. Lucian departed, and Patrick and I returned to The Old 77.

Vacation day 4 of 9. In The Old 77. Woke to the sound of thunder. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. We walked to Hotel Monteleone. Patrick dropped off copies of his books with bookseller Candice H. We picked up our festival passes and chatted with Octavia Books' Tom L. We encountered and chatted with Alan W, Tracy C, Trebor H, and Monique J. Patrick and I walked to and visited St. Louis Cemetary No. 1. There was a mixup about the cemetary helper person who was supposed to meet us there, but Patrick got help from another cemetary helper person to identify the crypt in which some of his family members' remains are stored. We also saw some famous ones, including Nicolas Cage's pyramid, voodoo queen Marie Laveau's, and a former mayor's. We walked Rampart Street along Congo Square and Armstrong Park to beverages at Fatma's Cozy Corner: mint green iced tea for Patrick, lemon ginger iced tea for me. We visited and enjoyed the New Orleans African American Museum (NOAAM). We returned to Fatma's Cozy Corner for lunch: we shared one Cuban panini and a medium iced chai. Patrick also had one piece of baklava. We walked to Baldwin & Company Bookstore & Coffee Shop where we shared a bottled flavored water and where we again encountered and chatted briefly with Trebor H. Later Patrick and I happened upon Loretta's Pralines, and we bought one original praline and one chocolate praline to eat later. We visited the New Orleans Jazz Museum for a concert by Belinda Moody, leaving partway through. We rode the streetcar and walked to The Old 77. We rested. We rode the streetcar and walked around before dinner at Cane and Table. Cocktails: Common Ground (celebrating the African Diaspora through flavors and Black-owned and -influenced spirits of the South and Caribbean, this tall refresher blends bourbon, dark rum, pecan orgeat, citrus, and soda) for Patrick, special menu frozen mango margarita (blanco tequila, mango, passionfruit) for me, Summer Set Falls for Patrick (pineapple-infused tequila meets blackberry with a cilantro and herbal backbeat in this crushed ice refreshment). We shared coctel de camarones (shrimp with fried saltines), croquetas (crab, aioli, lemon), arroz con pollo (half springer mountain chicken, saffron bomba rice). Everything was delicious. The coctel de camarones was particularly perfect due to the served-hot fried saltine crackers. 20% service charge was included in the bill. Service by Mary Claire S (aka MC) was great. We walked to BK House (formerly Beauregard-Keyes House) for the Saints and Sinners Festival (SASFest) opening party. We met or encountered Trebor H, Lucian C, Gar M, MR, Jewelle and Diane, Karl S, Eric, outgoing Board President Lawrence HG, Alan W, Greg H, Tracy C, Steven R. Patrick talked at length about genealogy with party crasher (of sorts) Albert D, and after Patrick started recognizing some names he threw out and some quick swipes on Albert's ancestry.com tree on his phone, we were all surprised to learn that Albert and Patrick were related—first cousins six times removed. They talked for a while, and the party ended. Patrick and I walked to Cafe du Monde. We shared one order of beignets; cafe au lait for both, mine decaf. We rode the streetcar and walked to The Old 77. To bed.

Sat Mar 23, 2024

Vacation day 5 of 9. In The Old 77. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. I also ate one sumo orange. Patrick and I walked to Hotel Monteleone. At the Saints and Sinners Festival we attended Writers Read with Sven Davisson, Jubi Arriola-Headley, David Bergman, Andrew Holleran, Steven Reigns, Phil Tarley, and Gary Zebrun. Afterwards we visited the Congo Square Rhythms Festival. We enjoyed the drumming and dancing and happened upon Ms. Linda's food booth. She was selling yakamein and mac and cheese. We had never had yakamein before. We shared one order of shrimp and beef yakamein which we both found too salty and too blackpeppery but nonetheless delicious. We walked to American Townhouse which was open but empty and where we enjoyed a Southern fried catfish sandwich and side kale Caesar salad. Unsweetened iced tea for Patrick, Topo Chico for me. The order delivery took longer than expected. We returned to Hotel Monteleone for a literary discussion: Crafting Kinship: Bio/Logical Family In LGBTQ+ Literature. ("Join us for an inspiring LGBTQIA literary panel as we delve into the complex and beautiful concepts of family, both chosen and assigned. Celebrating diverse voices and experiences, our esteemed panelists will explore how LGBTQIA individuals redefine traditional notions of family, forging deep connections with chosen communities. Through thought-provoking discussions and poignant readings, we'll explore the power of love, resilience and bonds created by Queer community in literature.") Panelists: Matthew Clark Davison, Monique Jenkinson, Gar McVey-Russell, and Rose Norman. Moderator: K.M. Soehnlein. Next, another literary discussion: Writing Beyond Realism. ("Non-realistic fiction has long been popular with LGBTQ+ writers—science fiction, horror, surrealism, and other speculative styles. Does speculative fiction hold more of an appeal for LGBTQ+ writers than for others? If so, why? What does speculative fiction allow us to do in our writing that realism doesn’t? Does speculative fiction present us with any limitations? This panel will discuss these and other questions.") Panelists: Virginia Black, Jewelle Gomez, Felice Picano, and David R. Slayton. Moderator: Daniel M. Jaffe. Patrick and I left the festival, strolling through the French Quarter then resting in Jackson Square. We dined at Dian Xin 2: crab and crawfish soup dumplings, basil popcorn chicken, panfried mini baos, har gow, hot buckwheat tea. Service was fair. Food was tasty. I didn't like something about the flavor of the grease used to cook the popcorn chicken but couldn't specify exactly what was wrong. P liked that dish. The xiao loong bao were too large and are best eaten after a few minutes. If you eat them too early the floor breaks and the soup leaks. The panfried mini baos delivery took so much longer than expected we presumed they forgot about the order and were planning to request a modified check moments before they arrived. We stayed and ate them. We returned to Hotel Monteleone. Patrick arrived early to meet event host Amie while I windowshopped nearby. Patrick participated in the SAS Fiction Contest Reading. (Join this year's contest winner Charlie J. Stephens "For the Birds," our runners-up Ariadne Blayde "The End of the World" and Alfred P. Doblin "Holy Communion," along with finalists Edward Cahill, Marco Carocari, Chyx, Jay Michaelson, and Patrick Earl Ryan for an evening of cocktails and readings from the Saints and Sinners 2024: New Fiction from the Festival hosted by Co-editor Amie M. Evans with comments from our finalist judge Trebor Healey. Audience members receive a copy of the new anthology created from our 2024 Short Fiction Contest. Sponsored by the John Burton Harter Foundation.) Afterwards at Sucré Patrick and I shared a dessert called Sucré Fumé. No drink. We walked to Rouse's for provisions: cereal, milk, bottled water. Back to The Old 77 and to bed.

Sun Mar 24, 2024

Vacation day 6 of 9. In The Old 77. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. We walked to Hotel Monteleone. At the Saints and Sinners Festival Patrick was a panelist in a literary discussion: Writing Heroes and Heroines: Inspiration and Influence. ("Who is your writing hero or heroine? While we might frequently admire the works and lives of our fellow writers, sometimes the impact of another author is formative, foundational, and even profound. Their style, attitude, tenacity, creativity, successes and challenges remind us of our own artistic goals and keep us connected to our literary roots. Panelists will reveal some of their literary heroes and heroines and discuss how their creative lives have been enhanced, informed, and impacted by them.") Panelists: Cynthia Carr, Michael Cunningham, Matthew Clark Davison, J.M. Redmann, and Patrick Earl Ryan. Moderator: Jonathan Alexander. I chatted with and received Chinese restaurant suggestions from Daniel: Wishing Town and Miss Shirley's. Afterwards Patrick and I walked to Killer Po-Boys. We shared one BBQ chicken confit po-boy, unsweetened iced tea, bottled water. I found instructions on the web about the proper way to wear my Tilley hat. I hadn't realized that the back strap served to keep the hat on in any kind of wind conditions; I had thought it was meant to be tucked in the crown. I began wearing my Tilley hat correctly today, and it performed beautifully even in strong gusts of wind. We visited French Truck Coffee. Patrick was still hungry, so he ate a jalapeño sausage croissant with an espresso. Back to Hotel Monteleone: Patrick was a panelist in another literary discussion: Nostalgia as a Creative Act/Moving From Memory To Fiction. ("Nostalgia for both time and place is a strong trigger for memory, a longing and sadness urging us to return. Join our panelists as they discuss how preserving our pasts through the filter of fiction can be an act of survival for the writer. How queer writers can avoid oversimplifying our collective experience—Stonewall, the slutty ’70s, the AIDS battles of the ’80s—to transform personal material into detailed and intimate portraits that speak to larger truths. Added to this queer context, nostalgia can be a cultural marker—one that resonates in a love of old brands, family recipes, stories, and local legends handed down through the generations. How do writers bring the past to the page, while avoiding the pitfalls of sentimentality and wish-fulfilling fantastication?") Panelists: Lucian Childs, Dale Corvino, Andrew Holleran, and Patrick Earl Ryan. Moderator: Alan Williams. Patrick and I returned to The Old 77 to change clothes and rest briefly. We returned to Hotel Monteleone for the closing reception. A group of us walked to dinner at Cane and Table: Felice P, Dale C, Lucian C, Patrick, and me. Another group of friends to whom Patrick suggested this restaurant would be seated at an adjacent table about 20 minutes later. Drinks: Smoke on the Rocks, Fair Hope, Passionfruit Ginger Lemonade, Yellow Rose of Texas. We shared: grilled octopus (kalamataa ioli, sweet pepper slaw), tostones (twice fried plantains, pikliz, habanero hot sauce, salsa verde), sweet plantains (crema, salsa macha), arroz con pollo (half springer mountain chicken, saffron bomba rice), fish rundown (fried drum, rock shrimp, coconut curry, jazzmen rice). dessert: we shared passionfruit ruby chocolate rice pudding (coconut milk, chocolate condensed milk drizzle, marcona almonds) and rum cake (lime crema, rum glaze). We ate and enjoyed each others' company and stories and talk. Everyone joined in a walk along Decatur, returning to our respective hotels. Patrick and I bought water from the nearby mini mart before returning to The Old 77.

Mon Mar 25, 2024

Vacation day 7 of 9. In The Old 77. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. I also ate a navel orange. Patrick and I walked to and visited Mardi Grad World. After the introductory film we received a pleasant surprise. While leaving we had to wait for a long train to pass. Then we walked to Dickie Brennan's Commissary (aka The Commissary Market + Kitchen) which to our disappointment we discovered was closed. We walked to Race Street and found the building where Patrick and Sam had lived. We stopped for rose limeade and greeting cards at Mojo Coffee House. We walked to lunch at Turkey and the Wolf, Bon Appetit's best new restaurant of 2017. We shared a fried bologna sandwich (leighann’s bologna, via’s mom’s hot mustard, potato chips, shrettuce, mayo, and american cheese on big toast) and a side wedge salad (bacon, everything bagel crunchy stuff, tomatoes, blue cheese dressing, fresh dill). The sandwich is tasty and very Instagram-worthy. The salad, also tasty, is drenched in blue cheese dressing and everything bagel topping. We loved everything. Root beer for Patrick, iced tea for me. We walked to Parish Parlor where Patrick got two kinds of ice cream: cardamom saffron and double chocolate. We returned to The Old 77 and napped before dinner at Pêche: gintilly shakedown (gin, rosemary, ginger, cucumber, lemon, cava) for me, the scarlet letter (rye, dry vermouth, aperitivo, benedictine, angostura) for Patrick, tuna crudo with miso, radish, shallots, and crispy rice; fried bread with sea salt; seafood gumbo; griller grouper with coconut-creamed greens and cauliflower. Dessert: salted peanut pie with salted peanut ice cream and chocolate sauce. During the meal we each received a glass of complimentary champagne for seemingly no reason at all. The shape of the fried bread—a small ball—was a nice surprise. We enjoyed everything, and Patrick particularly loved the salted peanut pie, which we agreed does not appear on menus that often. We returned to The Old 77 to brush teeth. We joined Felice P and Dave A, meeting the latter for the first time, at Mahogany Jazz Hall for an hour or so of drinks and a rousing performance by The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band.

Tue Mar 26, 2024

Vacation day 8 of 9. In The Old 77. Breakfast in our room: cereal with milk, water to drink. I also ate a navel orange. Packed. Patrick and I visited the Piazza d'Italia then the Ogden Museum. We lunched at Willa Jean: we shared a regular biscuit and the hangover bowl. Turmeric latte for Patrick, jasmine peach tea for me. Returned to The Old 77. Checked out. Despite the room having many issues, we enjoyed our stay, especially since we were able to walk to so many things. Rode Lyft to the airport. United Airlines flight from MSY to SFO. We watched Captain America: The First Avenger on our iPad Air with shared AirPod Pros. We encountered Monique J and later Mike P (from The Syndicate) with baby on the same flight. Champagne, cocktails, and sparkling water. Dinner on the flight: Patrick had thai meatballs with rice pilaf, side salad, dinner roll with butter, basque cheesecake slice. I had cow burger and fries, spinach salad with vinaigrette, basque cheesecake slice. The burger and fries were imperfect in different ways, and I wouldn't order it again, but I was curious to see how well it could be done on a plane. At baggage claim we chatted briefly with Mike P. Rode Lyft home. Settled and began unpacking. Patrick went to bed. After opening my laptop after 8 days on vacation, I noticed a problem in which OneDrive had stopped working. It failed to log in, and it would say "Loading..." and never load. It had been working fine before I left. Restarting the Mac did not fix it. Reinstalling did not fix it. Clean reinstalling and renaming folders to prevent needing to redownload everything did not work; after doing so, OneDrive detected a problem with seemingly every file it had ever downloaded, and there was no easy way to resolve them all at once. I reset (show package contents on the onedrive app, run ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command in the Resources folder) then fully deleted all current OneDrive folders and symlinks, then set up anew, choosing ~/Library/CloudStorage as the location instead of the default presented, which was I think an older location before Apple moved cloud storage folders to the new location. This troubleshooting and resolving took several hours. I also installed a macOS update on Patrick's computer. I think it was 14.4.1. To bed late.

Wed Mar 27, 2024

Vacation day 9 of 9. At home in San Francisco. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced dried jackfruit; hot water. Unpacked and tidied all morning. Repaired the toilet which had failed to fill the tank after flushing. I rotated a dial on the float in the minus direction two times and that seemed to fix it. Lunch at home with Patrick: oolong tea, Royal Asia shrimp spring rolls with soy ginger sauce from frozen, TJ's mandarin-style orange chicken bowl. Installed a new showerhead. Backups for phone and iPad. House chores: changed pillowcases, cleaned the bathroom, vacuumed. Cut my hair, showered. Cleaned the bathroom. Rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: previously frozen red beans and rice, dinner roll with butter, water. Dessert: Patrick had a knipschildt artisan chocolate. I had an orange creamsicle ice cream bar. We watched The Brothers Sun s1:e4 then the remainder of Hari Kondabolu: Warn Your Relatives on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Butcher block wood butter treatment. Late snack: TJ's mini pepperoni pizza.

Thu Mar 28, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, blueberries; hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. First day at work after 9 days away on vacation. I had forgotten my ID badge, so I visited the OSACA and they were kind enough to let me hotel in Robyn's office. Standup with Suzan. Lots of catching up on email: followup with Lisa D about Staffbase and the Spring Research Seminar announcement, followup with La'Trece about orgcharts, followup with Joanna H about the pharmacy deans list, followup with Nicki M about Versa: let's not participate for now, followup with Microsoft and Snehashis S about incorrect member counts in Teams, followup with Courtney S about digital displays on MSB9, followup with Sahru K about town hall, forwarded a request to CAOs, updated a question in the reply to an interview invitation to be required for Joel, forwarded job opportunities to friends, created a new (budget?) CP orgchart for Karen H, met with Lisa D about the peer review announcement, granted Sahru access to edit the Benet event website. Worked with Suzan to publish a news story. I helped Joel open a restored PST file then attempt to repair it. The repair failed. Rode Muni home. On the commute home, I began reading Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin, dead tree edition. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom tacos with avocado and sliced radishes, water. We watched The Brothers Sun s1:e5 on Netflix. As Patrick prepared for bed, I noticed that my laptop was running out of disk space because lots of different applications displayed alerts: unable to read project, Mail cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder, etc. OneDrive is dumb enough to not warn you when you are about to use 100% of your disk space to make files available offline. I resolved this by pausing sync, changing settings to make many more things offline, restarting the Mac, then restarting OneDrive. Back to normal now. I washed dishes. Late snack: leftover corn tortilla that didn't get used at dinner, unsalted cashews, banana chips, water. Began forming draft vacation journal entries.

Fri Mar 29, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, blueberries; hot water. Holiday. All day: continued forming draft vacation journal entries. Changed the bed sheets. Nap. Lunch at home by myself: breaded cod fillets from frozen, sweet potato fries from frozen, water. Dinner at home with Patrick: tomato parmesan soup and a mini chicken melt with avocado and tomato, water. Afterwards we rewatched X2 (2003) on Disney+ with Skinny Pop butter microwave popcorn to which Patrick added cheddar cheese powder. Patrick went to bed. I performed backups for my iPhone 12 mini and iPad Air and home websites and updates for home devices. Published vacation journal entries. Late snack: one sumo orange.

Sat Mar 30, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, blueberries; hot water. Continued reading Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. Toasted coconut flakes. Began work on a new outdoor sign for Recharge Medical. For lunch Patrick and I walked to Chalos. Patrick had a large mocha and three empanadas: carne dulce, pollo picante, and espinaca. I had a medium chai latte and a breakfast burrito. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: roasted chicken with vegetable trio of asparagus, zucchini and yellow squash, water. We watched The Brothers Sun s1:e6 on Netflix. I washed dishes. We rewatched part of Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact on Netflix because I had forgotten that we had seen it. Patrick remembered we did but didn't say so until after we paused with 30 minutes left. Patrick went to bed. I washed more dishes. Late snack: charred corn off the cob from frozen, with butter. Water to drink.

Sun Mar 31, 2024

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted shaved coconut, pumpkin seeds, diced half banana; hot water. Continued reading Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin. Continued work on a new outdoor sign for Recharge Medical. Performed linkchecking for home websites after a long time of not doing so. Encountered error "resource deadlock avoided" when attempting to view local websites in MAMP PRO. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus even though it was Sunday because Patrick needed more space to himself at home. I resolved the deadlock error by moving my website root out of ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox and into ~/Sites and reconfigured scripts and other things accordingly. Lunch from Subway: philly cheesesteak 6-inch. Water from my water bottle. Encountered a problem in which chat.google.com failed to load. I resolved it by deleting all Google cookies. Watched various YouTube videos. Napped. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Little Original Joe's: 14-inch pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, and spinach. Water to drink. Patrick washed dishes. We finished rewatching Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact on Netflix then watched various YouTube videos then The Brothers Sun s1:e7 on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. I moved my config folder out of Dropbox then deleted Dropbox. I reconfigured backup sets and schedules in light of today's changes to the Sites and config folders. Resolved issues with relocating the .ssh folder.
