Thu Nov 2, 2023

Sick day #11. I am feeling mostly fine after my 10 days of isolation but plan to keep isolating a few more days due to my Anaheim trip coming up next week. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Downloaded databases to do local dev. Successfully upgraded Docker from 4.23.0 to 4.24.2 from within the app. When starting fin, I encountered "bind: address already in use." and "ERROR: Failed starting the DNS service." Successfully upgraded Docker from 4.24.2 to 4.25.0 (manual download). Restarted the MacBook Pro. When starting fin, it encountered the same errors. Successfully downgraded Docker from 4.25.0 to 4.23.0 (manual download). Restarted the MacBook Pro. When starting Docker, the DNS service again failed to start, but I pressed the play button and it started successfully. I was then able to start fin successfully and proceed. Styling work in Drupal. Patrick went to bed. I installed macOS Monterey 12.7.1 on both our computers. On my MacBook Pro upon restart after install I got a spinner that took a really long time—maybe 15 minutes?—before it finally logged in. Scary. Patrick's MacBook Pro did not have the same problem.

Mon Nov 6, 2023

Anaheim trip day 1 of 7. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. Rode Lyft to SFO. Flight from SFO to SNA. Lani picked me up while also giving a ride to Jamie's mom whom we dropped off at her destination. We drove to our childhood home. We had many visitors including tenant Fermin (with whom I used my limited Spanish to share some difficult news), property manager Silvia, handyman Carlos, and a plumber. Dex arrived, and the three of us began cleaning the garage. After much work we took a break, ordering delivery from a Thai restaurant via credit from a generous Grubhub gift from Johnson. We learned that you cannot use a Grubhub gift card without first adding a credit card of your own. We continued cleaning, occasionally finding treasures such as a thermally changing mug from Dad's work at Northrop, a new set of China hand-painted with poppy flowers, milk glassware, and Lani's uniforms from Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child Jesus. We filled one extra large trash bin and one extra large recycle bin and organized many items for disposal or re-homing. We drove to dinner at Anaheim Packing District. Lani and I shared items from Adya: sev puri and coconut shrimp curry with butter naan, raita, and dal; tap water to drink. Dex had a handroll trio and a beer from Zabon Ramen. Our Adya meal was perfection even though we couldn't agree on which items were spicy or to what degree. (I'll avoid the dal next time.) Dex seemed to enjoy his sushi rolls. Afterwards we did some grocery shopping at Vons then returned to the house, and I soon went to bed.

Tue Nov 7, 2023

Anaheim trip day 2 of 7. Oatmeal with raisins; hot water. Cleaned the refrigerator door handles with dish soap then vinegar. Family members stopped by after we offered furniture and other items to them. They departed, some with items to dispose or re-home. The plumber returned and installed a new toilet in the front bathroom. Lunch at home with Lani and Dex: leftovers from yesterday's lunch. Cleaned the drawers of one desk in the middle bedroom, examining many stacks of papers, saving a pile of things to be shredded and a pile of interesting items, and recycling a pile of unneeded and non-confidential papers. Printed notice letters then stuffed them into envelopes only to find out later we did not need them thanks to Silvia who had already printed and distributed them. Errands with Lani and Dex: bank, city cashier, city customer service, city cashier, post office, Costco. At Costco we bought fire extinguishers and 9-volt batteries and toilet brushes and coffee. Dinner at Mr. BBQ, a Korean barbecue restaurant referred by a friend of Dex. We ate many kinds of premium meats. We drank non-alcoholic lychee slushies (Lani and me) and a soju sampler (Dex). During our meal we encountered a long hair on one plate with raw meat and politely pointed it out to our server when they returned. They immediately apologized and comped our drinks and upgraded us to the premium menu. We thought the response was generous. Dessert: ice cream: chocolate (Lani and me), strawberry (Dex). We ate too much food. I later said I didn't regret it but I also said I did regret it. I felt like not eating for the next several days. Back to the house. We three chatted a bit about the schedule and logistics for Saturday's memorial service for Mom.

Wed Nov 8, 2023

Anaheim trip day 3 of 7. Showered and cleaned the shower curtain. Oatmeal with raisins; hot water. More housecleaning and sorting documents into shred, recycle, and investigate. Lunch with Lani and Dex at Kotohira: udon with cod for Lani, bento for Dex, udon with inari sushi for me. The food and drink here was excellent. We stopped briefly at Sakura-Ya to buy mochi and manju. We visited two banks to retrieve beneficiary payments and to create a new trust account. The first bank took about 40 minutes. The second bank took nearly four hours. We stopped at 99 Ranch for a few small and quick purchases. We drove back to the house.

Thu Nov 9, 2023

Anaheim trip day 4 of 7. Oatmeal with raisins; hot water. Packed and rode Lyft to Doubletree Hilton Anaheim Convention Center where I met Patrick. He changed in the lobby restroom, and we gave our bags for them to hold. Rode Lyft to Disneyland. There was essentially no line for security check. We walked through Star Wars Land and avoided the two rides due to long waits. We visited Red Rose Tavern and shared one order of The Grey Stuff which, due to Halloween theming, was instead The Graaaave Stuff. Many rides had very long waits, so I took us on the one thing I knew would have no line—Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough. We walked past the Matterhorn which was temporarily closed, with riders trapped at the end waiting to alight. We walked past Indiana Jones which was temporarily closed. We walked past Jungle Cruise which had a very long line. We waited a few minutes at the Enchanted Tiki Room but abandoned because Patrick wanted to do something else. We walked past Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion both of which were temporarily closed. We sat near New Orleans Square to strategize, and while doing so Haunted Mansion opened, so we rode that. Pirates opened, so we rode that. Lunch at Rancho del Zocolo: tacos trio and guava agua Fresca for Patrick, enchilada plate with rice and beans and Topo Chico for me. We watched the live performance Tale of the Lion King, which we both thought was terrific. While waiting in line at Jungle Cruise they temporarily stopped loading for about 10 minutes. We walked past Matterhorn which was still closed. We noticed that the railroad did not open at 4:00 p.m. as advertised. We bought and ate popcorn. We rode Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. The overhead basket track is gone. The 3D glasses are new to us. Patrick was the Rebel spy! We returned to the lockers to get warmer clothes then visited the bathroom to change clothes. We rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Water. We tried to take the monorail to our dinner reservation, but it wasn't working. We walked and walked and finally got to Downtown Disney. We sat by a fountain and rested. Dinner at Brennan's Jazz Kitchen Coastal Grill and Patio: cocktails, shrimp and grits, coastal jambalaya. No dessert. Sat at the fireplace at the Grand Californian while ordering and waiting for Lyft to arrive. Rode Lyft to the hotel. Patrick went to bed, and I showered then went to bed.

Fri Nov 10, 2023

Anaheim trip day 5 of 7. Breakfast buffet with Patrick at Agio. Oatmeal with cranberries, shredded coconut, and other toppings. Breakfast potatoes. Our server noticed that I didn't each much and charged us only one meal—so nice. Rode Lyft to Disneyland. Accepted a suggestion from the driver to be dropped at IHOP to save five to ten minutes avoiding the crowded rideshare drop-off location; you just have to cross the street at the crosswalk which has a traffic signal so it's quite safe. This turned out for us to be correct and valuable advice. We encountered very long, nearly unbearable lines to enter security check, probably because today was the first day of the Christmas decor. Entered Disneyland. Bought Genie+. Enchanted Tiki Room. We realized that parts of the preshow now seem a bit racist. (e.g., Me Rongo!) And some of the preshow animations did not function. Why play Heigh-Ho at the end of the Enchanted Tiki Room? It makes no sense. Why not Hawaiian music? We rode Smuggler's Run via lightning pass. Patrick and I got to be pilots, which seemed more exciting than the roles of the other three persons in our ship (two adults and a child), but our controls didn't feel like they controlled very much. I felt as though I had been placed into a video game against my consent and given responsibilities for providing enjoyment for ourselves and the other party on our ship, and it caused me some anxiety because I know I'm not good at piloting. Since our ship did not do well in the game (I think we crashed into a towering object?) and since the controls didn't feel like they worked, I felt entirely disappointed and somewhat duped and guilty. I much rather prefer Star Tours where I'm not asked—nay, forced—to work to be entertained. We walked past Big Thunder Mountain Railroad which was temporarily closed. At Tiana's Palace, Patrick had house gumbo with cornbread and unsweetened iced tea, and I had a beef po-boy with rice and beans with bottled water. We marveled at the magical sight of automatic electric folding French doors. Today was the first time I saw cast members placing tape on the ground to initiate line management. At one point we saw a railroad train running but with no passengers. We shared a churro. We watched Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, which was mostly empty. We rested outside It's a Small World, and here we saw a railroad train pass with guests on it for the first time. We waited at the railroad station for a train and abandoned after the train failed to appear after more than expected wait time of 10 minutes. At the monorail we waited in line 5 minutes then heard an announcement saying that there was only one train, and the wait time was 45 minutes. We abandoned. Snacks: frozen cherry lemonade and crunchy Cheetos. The table we sat at was not completely clean. We rode Space Mountain via lightning pass. In New Orleans Square we waited for Jambalaya Jazz, which started late and had no microphone. They played only three songs and then took a break. We rested in front of the castle on green benches that had been rearranged and grouped in a manner to suggest you weren't meant to sit on them, and we overlooked a VIP area for fireworks viewing. We rode the Matterhorn bobsleds via lightning pass. We rested and drank bottled water at tables near Casey Jr. and then inside Red Rose Tavern. We stopped in at the Golden Horseshoe Revue and watched a piano player perform. Dinner at River Belle Terrace: pork chop and decaf coffee for Patrick, peppermint tisane and blackened sea bass for me. No dessert. Service was noticeably slow. We sat at the fireplace at the Grand Californian while ordering and waiting for Lyft to arrive. Rode Lyft to the hotel. Patrick went to bed, and I showered then went to bed.

Sat Nov 11, 2023

Anaheim trip day 6 of 7. Breakfast buffet with Patrick at Agio, similar to yesterday except I ate a little more today and so they charged us two full meals. Back in the room we prepped for today's event. Patrick and I rode Lyft to the Buddhist Memorial Complex at Rose Hills Mortuary. We waited outside during the chanting ceremony, then joined during the walk to the place the urn in its location next to (part of) Dad's urn. We all visited Amah's resting place nearby. Afterwards we held a luncheon for about 27 persons at NBC Seafood Restaurant. Joey and Jeanne gave us a ride there. The food and service at NBC were both excellent. I played a slideshow of images from my iPad Air. Apple's Photos app didn't let us loop it or control the amount of time each image showed, so after a while I simply left it on one image and got up to change it now and then. There was particular interest in one wedding photo with many people in it. Lani and Uncle Bernard said some words at various times to give the moment meaning. Afterwards Joey and Jeanne gave Patrick and me a lift to our hotel with a short stop at Joey's mom's place to drop off a few things. Rested in the room. For a quick dinner within walking distance we looked inside Denny's then Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles before deciding on Carl's Jr.: bbq chicken combo with waffle fries and chocolate shake for Patrick, western bacon combo with fries and lemonade for me. I'll never forget the children who were permitted to crawl on the floor on their stomachs underneath rows of barstools while playing. Walked back to the hotel, stopping at the convenience store in the hotel for bottled water. We watched the last hour or so of Captain America: The Winter Soldier on FX with four-minute commercials. Patrick fell asleep while watching. I spent an hour completing a survey about our Disneyland visit. Their survey asked if we would return within the year, and I said no; they have no idea that I never plan to return after our two-day visit. What an awful and disappointing visit. I went to bed soon after.

Sun Nov 12, 2023

Anaheim trip day 7 of 7. Checked out of Doubletree Hilton Anaheim Convention Center. Rode Lyft to the Bowers Museum where we enjoyed various exhibits including Beyond the Great Wave: Works by Hokusai from the British Museum; The Power of Photography; California Bounty: Image and Identity, 1850-1930; and other works from the permanent collection. They were able to hold our luggage for us at the front desk. At a break in the middle, we lunched at Tangata, the restaurant at the museum, which seemed to suffer greatly from having too few staffmembers. Patrick had katsu chicken sandwich with side salad. I had a half sandwich and half soup combo (tuna cheddar melt and tomato soup). Water and iced teas to drink. About $60 after a $6 tip. The food and drink were delicious. Rode Lyft to SNA. Passed through the security checkpoint. Got bahn mi from Brodard Express and waited until we were in the air to eat. Patrick had pork, I had chicken, no jalapenos. These sandwiches were delicious. The bread was delightfully perfect—fresh, crunchy outside, soft and chewy inside—and the meat was tender and flavorful. Would definitely eat there again. On the flight Patrick had a bourbon cocktail, and I had a margarita cocktail. During the flight I rewatched John Mulaney: New in Town on my iPhone 12 mini with my AirPods Pro. We arrived at SFO then rode Lyft home. Patrick went to bed. I unpacked.

Began retranscribing in Otter the 10-17-2020 town hall because the captions for the YouTube video were not done properly. Rode Muni to dinner at Ebisu with Patrick who had completed a dentist appointment in the area. Patrick had bento #1. I had tempura don. We each had miso soup. We shared a large hot sake. All food and drink was delicious. Rode Muni home. Dessert: Trader Joe's chocolate and peanut butter JoJo's, warm milk. Patrick went to bed. Bernard and I drank outside on the back patio with the great view, and while we chatted it started to rain. After a while I accompanied him on an errand to the library where he retrieved a document from Kirk H, and we chatted a while about various things including Fire Island. Listserv config work for Nicole F. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Rain. Rode Muni and walked to dinner at Inle with Patrick: maui waui for Patrick, blue skies lychee cocktail for me. We shared the sampler appetizer. Patrick had chicken curry with rice and paratha (flatbread). I had nan pya noodle salad. We saved $2 due to special happy hour prices. In the sampler the chicken wing and drumstick were a bit spicy. Nothing else was spicy. My noodle dish was not very hot, but I didn't complain because I didn't want to wait for them to resolve it. Rain. Rode Uber home. Together we watched the 10-minute video at hu.ma.ne.

Sat Nov 18, 2023

Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, diced half banana; hot water. (Small rather than medium today due to waking lateish and expecting to have a larger than normal brunch.) Sam picked up Patrick and me, and we brunched at Yank Sing Spear Street. Underground garage parking in Rincon Center seemed free even though we had our ticket validated. All food and drink were perfect. Sam special-ordered a sea bass roll which was particularly delicious. They didn't seem to have the pistachio ice cream cake that we all remembered, and we didn't ask if they did. Sam dropped us off afterwards. I rested and napped while Patrick did schoolwork. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftovers: potato broccoli and cheddar soup, Inle. I also had a glass of white wine. Dessert: Patrick had his homemade mint chip ice cream. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Listserv work: closed unneeded listservs and followup on Eric's listserv meeting with OSACA. Eric helped me change cubes. Team meeting. Lunch at Ballast Point, our first time to this restaurant. Eric had fish tacos with iced tea. Suzan and I drank water and shared a Fog City Goodie Bowl and added boiled egg. We also shared an order of fries. Ordering is via QR code, and it seemed like there were only two employees in the front of house. We walked through the entire restaurant to see the space, and an employee presumed we might want to rent the space for a future party and gave his card to Eric. All food and drink were delicious. Afterwards I ran an errand, and they came along for the walk. We returned to work. Karen and Eric and I met about a somewhat-embargoed topic and to discuss the forthcoming holiday party. Followup on WeID and ICRD issues with Angelie and Eric. While leaving the building, Eric and I encountered Bernard to my pleasant surprise and with whom we chatted briefly before he departed on foot at the corner. Eric and I ran to catch a train to Powell Street Station before splitting up. Completed my Muni ride and walk home. Door to door: a little over an hour. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken burgers with buttered corn on the cob, water. I washed dishes. We watched various short YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. Late small meal: the small remainder of yesterday's chicken and bacon half sandwich.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, cacao nibs, toasted slivered almonds, toasted shaved coconut, blueberries; hot water. Worked from home. Siteimprove linkchecking, spellchecking, and policy work. Listserv work. Handed off ICRD responsibilities to Angelie. Responded to a web editor request from Alyssa L and Kyle A for Craik Lab. Lunch at home: Patrick had leftover curry with newly cooked pasta, I had leftover pasta. Dinner rolls and butter for both. More listserv work including followup with James F. Calendar management. More listserv work. Completed the Parnassus Central Campus Site Improvements survey. Dinner at home with Patrick: tuna mac n cheese with broccoli, water. Dessert: one TJ's peppermint Jo-Jo each. I also had a small amount of whiskey with coffee liqueur on the rocks. We watched A Haunting in Venice on Hulu. Midway we shared microwave butter popcorn. We enjoyed the film. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Removed myself from collaboration folders in Box so that I stop receiving notifications I no longer need like someone deleting or editing a file I don't care about. Late small meal: leftover pasta with leftover marinara and a slice of toast to mop, water. Spent several hours trying to set up an account with a government agency. What a hassle.
