Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted slivered almonds, and blackberries; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. New this time: the operator was ahead of schedule and stopped under the freeway and above the train tracks near 22nd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue for 10 minutes. While riding I began restarting to read The Jungle Around Us by Anne Raeff. The first story The Doctors' Daughter has a powerful yet understated ending that made me feel like I was punched hard in the chest. Got my second COVID-19 booster (Moderna) at a UCSF tent near 16th and Owens a few days before FDA approval due to my working for UCSF where everyone is considered an essential worker. Began organizing and deleting things in 33T. Sorted two years of accumulated mail for our box number. Created and printed signs for nearby rooms for Alecia. Lunch at The Ramp with Levi: shrimp po boy with fries for Levi, fish and chips but with sweet potato fries instead of regular fries for me. Draft beer for Levi, a paloma for me. Due to an end-of-tap issue he got more than a pint at no extra charge but didn't finish all of it. Afterwards we briefly visited Crane Cove Park then returned to work. Began attempting to find out how to redirect misdelivered mail. Watched the UCSF town hall on Zoom. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: variation of Martha Stewart's shrimp chow mein and on low-gly noodles. Afterwards we finished watching The Matrix: Resurrections on Netflix DVD. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Water with lime juice.

Sat Apr 2, 2022

Breakfast with Patrick and Sam: large bowl of steel-cut oatmeal with milk, toasted slivered almonds, sliced banana, and blackberries; water. Sam's and Patrick's also had cinnamon and brown sugar. Sam came over with an old hard drive with some files and we set up an old MacBook Pro and iPad Air that we decided to trickle down to him since he's unable to afford his own equipment. We did some setup before he drove us to his place to drop stuff off and break for lunch at Chipotle: carnitas burrito and Diet Coke for Sam, pollo asado burrito and mandarin-turmeric-cardamom agua fresca for Patrick, carnitas salad with guac and mandarin-turmeric-cardamom agua fresca for me. Chipotle had only brown rice and not white rice, which suited us fine. Afterwards we did more setup at Sam's place including a trickle-down monitor and docking station. I realized that one power adapter was missing. Sam drove us home. After some searching I found the missing power adapter, and we sent Sam home with it. Patrick and I rested. I unpacked things brought home from Mission Bay from my bag. Patrick briefly napped. I managed trash and recycling. Sam got home and got the docking station working but not the monitor. I helped him troubleshoot and resolve via Facetime then Zoom. We also setup and tested printing to the printer he already had. Late dinner: Patrick had fiber cereal with milk then read in bed a while before sleeping. I had no dinner; still full from lunch.

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted slivered almonds, raisins, and blackberries; water. Vacuumed. Cut my hair, showered. Cleaned the bathroom. Brunch at Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company with Patrick, Jennie, and Fletch: Jennie had a canadian bacon eggs benedict. Fletch had the burger and fries and a cool calm and cucumber gose. Patrick had the chicken sandwich and side salad and a vodka bloody mary. I had the fruit parfait and a streetcar named dis-pair. We shared a plate of beignets, which were darker than Cafe Du Monde's but which correctly had the air pocket. All food was delicious. Service by "Am Server P" was friendly and excellent. Long nap. Patrick joined me after a while. Dinner at home with Patrick: I prepared tuna mac and cheese from a box mix with chickpea macaroni, canned tuna, mixed super greens, leftover chow mein veggies, chopped tomatoes, dried oregano. Water to drink. Afterwards we watched Star Trek: Picard s2:e5 on Paramount+ then most of SNL s47:e16 with Jerrod Carmichael. Patrick went to bed. Late snack: I toasted Tillamook sharp cheddar on whole wheat tortilla then added super greens; water. Updates and backups for home websites. Uploaded some photos to Flickr and Instagram then downloaded them from my phone to store on the network drive.

Fri Apr 8, 2022

Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted slivered almonds, and blueberries; water. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Orgchart work all day. ResourceSpace meeting with the team. Got a PCR COVID test at UCSF Parnassus. Errands. Lunch: ordered a chicken wrap and lemonade to go from LaLe. It wasn't a great experience. I was told it would be 10 minutes. Since we're still in a pandemic, I waited outside expecting someone to come out to tell me when my order was ready. Someone other than the person who took my order noticed I was standing and waiting a long time, certainly longer than 10 minutes, but I figured they were busy from all the outdoor table activity I could see. I said I was waiting for a chicken wrap. He said, "Oh! It's ready!" and motioned me with his hand to follow. I was disappointed to realize that somehow it was my responsibility to know when my order was ready. We went inside. I expected a chicken wrap wrapped in foil perhaps in a paper bag or wrapped with a napkin as well as my lemonade. Instead, I was presented with a giant, blue, zippered, insulated, and reusable bag that looked like it was intended for delivery drivers. I said no, I just want a regular bag. They showed me that the bag contained a metal container with a plastic or silicone lid that contained my meal. The entirety was designed to be better for the environment. A phone number on the side of the bag and the metal container promised that I could call it and all of it would be easily picked up and taken away to be washed and reused. Noticing that my order was not complete, I asked, "Where's my lemonade?" One person asked another to get my lemonade, confirming that it had not been prepared. I sighed, then accepted my fate with the packaging. Seeing that the meal included a small salad and there was no fork in the bag (another preparation failure), I requested a fork and received a prepared, likely disposable, plastic-wrapped package of plastic fork, plastic spoon, plastic knife, paper napkin, salt, and pepper. I paid. They didn't deserve it for such poor service, but I attempted to write in a $2 tip because I know wait staff have been working so hard or not working at all through the pandemic. I'm not sure it took since I paid with Apple Pay, and I think the person taking the payment blew past the tip part on my behalf before asking me to sign the receipt with a pen. (Touchless payment fails again.) My lemonade arrived. I said thank you then walked to the nearby baseball diamond in Golden Gate Park. I opened my meal. The food container was about 9 by 7 by 2 inches. Inside my chicken wrap lay neatly on its side, soaking in the dressing for the adjacent salad. A small disposable container of hummus was included. I was so disappointed by the chef who thought that anyone might possibly enjoy a soggy chicken wrap. The meal was delicious, even when soggy, even when not as hot as it should have been. After finishing, I returned to LaLe. No staff could be seen as I entered the restaurant and walked to the rear. I left the bag on the table where I received it. I walked out. This experience made me think about the cost, convenience, and meal experience of a single sheet of foil and a paper bag versus the cost of drivers retrieving reusable containers and bags from wherever they end up and then washing them. I have knowledge of how I plan to eat my meal, but my packaging preference was not taken into account. They have knowledge of how large the order is, and it seems that even the smallest order is not exempt from the new procedure. The meal still had disposable components. Does the new packaging procedure really help? Is it really worth it? I'm not sure I have the answer, but this experience was disappointing. More orgchart work. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: red onion, mushroom, and green chard bulgur wheat pilaf. Afterwards we watched standup comedy on YouTube including part of Ronny Chieng: Speakeasy on Netflix instant watch. Patrick went to bed. I joined him to cuddle a while. We slept. After about two hours I awoke then washed dishes. Late snack: one small carrot and four small mushrooms with raita for dipping.

Yesterday's PCR COVID test result is "not detected" so I'm in the clear for the recent exposure. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, unsweetened coconut, and blueberries; water. Trash management. The box or packaging design for the Dell P2721Q is mind-bogglingly terrific. Tighted a loose screw on the bathroom accordion mirror. Pantry management: transferred purple, yellow, and green sugar from plastic bags to empty, food-safe plastic jars. Small vacation begins. Rode UberX to Berkeley. Checked in to room 504 at Berkeley City Club which faces west and has a pretty nice view of the bay, the Bay Bridge, San Francisco, and part of the Golden Gate Bridge. Berkeley City Club is a historic hotel built in 1929 for Berkeley Women's City Club, and the building is the work of Julia Morgan. We encountered a problem with a lock on a closet door and had to ask the front desk to resolve it. They called a locksmith (Ian from Rex) who resolved it quickly and easily. We spent a little time exploring the different areas of the property including interior common rooms and hallways and exterior garden courtyards. We had drinks at Morgan's Bar and Lounge: glass of Chardonnay for Patrick, glass of Bourdeaux for me, mixed nuts. Rode UberX to Chez Panisse. Dinner. An amuse bouche: a crisp, light toast point with olive and mozzarella. An apéritif: mulberry with (we think it was) Champagne. All food and drink was delicious, and service by Naomi was excellent. We chatted with Naomi briefly about the play Patrick and I are about to see. Returned to Berkeley City Club. Long nap. For me: duck breast with brown walnut rice, red cabbage confit, and orange sauce. Dessert: we shared the warm chocolate cake with espresso ice cream and chocolate creme fraiche. We attended Patricia Milton's play Escape from the Asylum (Central Works), which we both enjoyed. Gary Graves directed, Chelsea Bearce played Katherine Smalls, Danielle O'Hare played Loveday Fortescue, Alan Coyne played Constable Crane et al, and Jan Zvaifler played Valeria Hunter. The entire production was a joy to attend. It was the first play we attended since the pandemic began over two years ago. Actors were unmasked. Guests were masked. Ceiling fans provided plenty of circulation. Air purifiers cleansed the air.

Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Lemonade via Uber Eats: Patrick had the green chile chicken bowl with sushi rice (spicy), I had the red miso bowl with greens, which was a little bit spicy but tolerable for me. Lunch: I ate Patrick's leftovers from last night and to which I added micro broccoli sprouts. Water to drink. Yesterday and today were especially cold outside. It was colder than normal indoors even with the heater on high. I felt too cold to do anything but nap with the electric mattress pad on. Woke in mid-afternoon. Patrick and I watched Spider-Man: No Way Home on Netflix DVD with Martha Stewart's Movie-Theater-Style Popcorn and iced decaf coffees with a bit of salted caramel Torani. Loved the film. Dinner at home with Patrick: chickpea shells pasta with peas, chopped tomatoes, green onions, and deli alfredo. I washed dishes. We watched various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. Cocktails: aviation but with lime juice instead of lemon juice. We watched Moon Knight s1:e3 on Disney+ then various YouTube videos. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Late small meal: more chinese chicken salad, water.

Sat Apr 23, 2022

Vacation day 1 of 3. Ran in place to various YouTube videos. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, flax meal, toasted slivered almonds, cacao nibs, raisins; water to drink. Packed for a mini vacation. Lunch at home: I prepared for myself cassava spaghetti with sauteed baby bok choy, garlic, green onions, and oyster sauce. Water to drink. Shower. Patrick and I walked to a nearby Turo rental car then returned home to load the car. Patrick drove us to San Jose where we checked in to Hayes Mansion. This was our first ever keyless, no-contact, no-front-desk check-in to a hotel. Masks were optional on the property, even indoors, and we rarely encountered other guests, so we felt comfortable going mostly maskless. We unpacked, explored the property, visited and chatted with people at the front desk, and got an extra cardkey for the pool gate. Patrick very much likes all the different outdoor and indoor spaces on this property: ballrooms, libraries, small nooks with a bookshelf, bench, and antique (and probably non-working) fireplace. We napped before Patrick's first visit to Chris and Nate's place, which is just a few minutes away by car. A large pile of dirt was in the driveway due to recent and forthcoming yard improvements. Patrick got a house tour. Dinner with Chris and Nate: appetizers on the patio: Champagne, jicama, red pepper, yogurt dip, crackers, parmesan crisps. Vacation day 2 of 3. Hayes Mansion. We had the gym to ourselves. Breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant Palm & Ember with Patrick. We were very happy with the food quality and selection as well as the service. Patrick and I attempted to drive to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum but as we neared we found many streets closed for a runner's event. We made several rerouting attempts and failed, parking a few blocks away and walking in the neighborhood for a while before stopping at a nearby Starbucks to buy bottled water and use the restroom, which had a very long line for some reason. We enjoyed free, exterior gardens for the museum and took some photos. Chris and Nate met us at the museum, having arrived after 11 a.m. when the runner's event street closures ended. We visited the museum, spending an hour or so there. We parked at Market Street Garage (we can't recall the last time we paid only $1 for parking) and lunched outdoors at Olla Cocina a short drive away: chips and guac, margaritas, nachos for Patrick and me, tres tacos for Nate, taco salad for Chris. We parted. Patrick and I returned to the hotel to rest and change clothes. Patrick drove him and me to Morgan Hill, and we walked around the neighborhood before dining at Odeum, a bit early for our reservation, but they were able to take us. Cocktails: Rickshaw (whiskey, green chartreuse, black sesame, lime) for Patrick, Failure to Appear (gin, vanilla simple syrup, egg whites, chocolate and cherry bitters) for me. Appetizer: we shared wood-fired, house-made pita with house-made ricotta with candied pecans and chestnut honey. Wine with dinner: pinot noir for Patrick, rose for me. Entrees: chicken and waffles with grilled asparagus, creamed spinach, and black truffle sauce for Patrick; wood-fired, oven-roasted, mustard-crusted Atlantic salmon with farro with roasted garlic crema and lemon drizzle for me. Dessert: we shared a double chocolate fudge cake. 20% service charge included. Service by Phuc L was good. Returned to Hayes Mansion. Patrick went to bed. Since I could not find a TV Guide channel, I channel-surfed a long time (40 channels including HBO Max) before giving up on finding anything I wanted to watch.

Vacation day 3 of 3. Hayes Mansion. Breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant Palm & Ember with Patrick. Patrick had correctly predicted that some of the buffet items were going to be different whereas I thought that was unlikely. Like yesterday, the buffet was another great experience. We packed and rested briefly before checking out—again no need to stop at the front desk. Patrick drove us home. Since we still had the car a few more hours, I convinced Patrick to lunch at Hook Fish, which I had been wanting to try. We were surprised to see its outdoor parklet packed. We ordered food to go and walked a block to Golden Gate Park, sitting on large, fallen tree trunks adjacent to an employees only space and with a view of the windmills. Patrick had a fried fish burrito. I had a salad with steelhead trout, lemon vinaigrette, seed mixture, and yogurt dip. The food was delicious. It's too bad we don't live closer, though Patrick might try to swing by if he has the means sometimes. Returned the rental car, walked home. Long nap for me. Got a disturbing phone call. Dinner at home with Patrick: fresh chickpea linguini with mushrooms, water. Watched Caleb Synan: 30 on YouTube with Patrick. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Caught up on journaling. Late small meal: leftover steelhead trout salad, water.
