Tue Sep 1, 2020

Ran in place to the remainder of Daddy and the Muscle Academy on Kanopy. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk and blueberries, water. Unloaded photos from my iPhone X. Continued OneDrive and SharePoint sync troubleshooting. Resolved an account request for Tanja K and Nicole F for BioP. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Restarted my MacBook Pro because the trackpad was occasionally not responding to taps. Resolved some duplicate folder problems in OneDrive. Mid-morning small meal: leftover five-spice chicken with noodles to which I added some ramen noodles. Taps not working still, so I rubbed the trackpad with a bit of water and quit BetterTouchTool. D7 styling work: add instagram social media icon (for TKP), resolve 'sliders have double arrows'. D8 styling work all day: css restructuring (ITCSS). Granted web editor access to Tanja K. Responded to a request from Marissa L about training videos. Followup with David N about OneDrive and SharePoint sync problems. PC Intranet work. Followup with OSACA about a job posting request. Dinner at home with Patrick: falafel in pita with toppings, water. Showed Patrick how to see Mailchimp activity and Google Analytics for his website. I washed dishes. Dessert: small bites of Patrick's pineapple-upside-down cake, previously frozen. I washed more dishes. At 8:00 pm I began setting up the new Mac Mini to replace the 2012 MacBook Air with a bulging battery. I used a wireless Magic Keyboard borrowed from Sam, a very old Microsoft Trackball Optical USB that I had planned to sell but never got around to it, and a bunch of ethernet cables. At about 8:30 pm all the power cables and ethernet cables and peripherals were in place and connected, so I turned on the Mac Mini and began the accounts transfer process. The transfer speed was unexpectedly slow—under 20 MB/s if you trust the value presented by Migration Assistant—even though I was using all CAT6 cables, and I don't know why. I wondered if wifi would have been faster, but figured at least it's not worse, and it's probably not good to stop this process in the middle and start over. The time remaining estimate varied wildly throughout the process—do not trust it. In case anyone was wondering like I had: no, it's not possible to perform a normal setup on a Mac Mini if you have a display and a pointing device but no keyboard. macOS includes an onscreen keyboard as part of their accessibility tools, but there is no way to access it during the setup process. When transferring data from another Mac, the setup will at one point ask you to recreate passwords for the accounts that migrate. I don't know why this step is necessary if those accounts already have passwords. It could simply use the same credentials. Small meal: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, and diced white nectarine. I washed more dishes. Successfully set up Luna Display so that my iPad Pro can pretend to be a touchscreen Mac Mini: automatic login, then add the Luna Display app to Login Items so that it starts automatically. Installing Catalina updates took another 30 minutes or so. Encountered some problems. Didn't get to bed until past 1 am. Late small meal: leftover mango beef, water.

Wed Sep 2, 2020

Ran in place to part of Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art on Amazon Prime Video. Worked from home. Sprint standup. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced nectarine. Met with James to discuss D8 work: image styles. Met with Eric and Anne to discuss content liaisons and web content maintenance. Small meal: leftover risotto. Long nap. D8 theme work: breakpoints build, began image styles work. Followup with Jon R and Josh L about a job posting. Began erasing and returning the new Mac Mini and returning Luna Display. Luna Display did work, but for me it was too problematic for a lot of different reasons. The keyboard shortcuts were different, e.g., Cmd+Option+Q to quit an app rather than Cmd+Q. Luna Display did not remember my display preference to mirror. Luna Display did not enable me to interact with macOS as easily as with a laptop, and some things were impossible to interact with. A keyboard and pointing device were still occasionally needed before the OS loaded, making the true headless Mac Mini via iPad with Luna Display not feasible for me. I had Unified Remote and BetterTouchTool Remote to fall back on, but this is already too many layers of frustration. Dinner at home with Patrick: red beans and rice with smoked sausage, water. Dessert for Patrick only: a slice of Patrick's German chocolate cake, previously frozen; milk. Erased the Mac Mini and reinstalled macOS Catalina. Watched Hollywood s1:e1 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Late small meal: leftover asparagus cavatappi, water.

Thu Sep 3, 2020

Brief meeting with Eric and James about strategy relating to D8 crop and drimage. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced asian pear; water. D8 work. Web editor training with Emma G and Cheryl C: add an event. Lunch: leftover asparagus cavatappi, warm half pita with hummus, water. Virtual group tour of our forthcoming new office space in the UCSF Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision aka WGV-CV building at Mission Bay. Form building for PC Intranet: Feedback and Submit News or Events. Afternoon snack: half of a handheld cherry pie, warmed. Read CSS Layout News 266. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Dinner at home: falafel and warm pita with fixins, water. Zoom chat with The Group With No Name. Dessert: half of a handheld cherry pie, warmed.

Fri Sep 4, 2020

Got a beach ball at my MacBook Pro login screen, and neither TouchID nor password worked, had to cold start. I think I encountered this yesterday morning as well. Ran in place to the remainder of Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art on Amazon Prime Video. No freezes this time. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced nectarine; half of a handheld cherry pie, warmed; water. Worked from home. Sprint standup. Ran in place to the remainder of Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e1: Inception and the Interpretation of Art on Kanopy. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced peach, diced banana; water. Dusted and rinsed in the back yard to remove ash that had accumulated since this season's wildfires began. Midmorning meal at home with Patrick: mascarpone pancakes with maple syrup. It was warm and sunny today, so I ate mine outside. Washed rear windows and the rear door mat with dish soap. Midafternoon small meal: leftover asparagus cavatappi, a rice cake, water. Planned and initiated a technology purchase. Chatted via SMS with Tina about audio technology. Completed the purchase, then chatted with a support engineer because something didn't go right with my order. It was resolved. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Arashi Sushi House via Uber Eats: miso soup, cherry blossom roll, ebi Q roll, rock roll, pair of inari nigiri, spider roll, negi hamachi roll. Sun Sep 6, 2020

Slept in. Roku TV restarted unexpectedly while running in place to Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e2: The Matrix and the Value of Knowledge. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, blueberries, diced peach; water. Today was the hottest day on record for much of California, and San Francisco reached 91 degrees when I checked at one point. Our apartment stayed cool since it is essentially the house's basement. Midafternoon small meal: leftover asparagus cavatappi, water. Nap. Sam came over for dinner and to stay overnight because his apartment had gotten hot enough to potentially cause health issues for him despite other precautions taken. Dinner with Sam and Patrick: leftover spanish tuna rice, previously frozen; variation on Williams-Sonoma's asparagus bisque; biscuits; water and sparkling water. Updates and backups for home devices and websites. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, currants; water. Continued playing Broken Age on my iPad Pro.

Mon Sep 7, 2020

Labor holiday. Slept in. When I awoke Patrick and Sam had gone to practice martial arts and run errands. I ran in place to Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e3: The Matrix Sequels and Human Free Will. Patrick returned with a half dozen of doughnuts from Krispy Kreme: pumpkin spice cinnamon roll, glazed chocolate cake, glazed sour cream cake, chocolate-iced Bavarian cream, strawberry-iced sprinkles, Oreo cream. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, blueberries, diced banana; water. Patrick and I shared two of the donuts: pumpkin spice cinnamon roll and chocolate-iced Bavarian cream. Patrick had his with coffee with milk. Cleaned the bathtub, showered. Walked to the mailbox and back. Nap. Snack: sweet potato chips. Received an unsolicited phone call from 415-269-5638 (San Francisco, CA) which from the voicemail left appears to be a scam because a description of this scam appeared on newyorkfed.org. In the evening PurpleAir reported that air quality had returned to good, so I opened the windows for a while to let some fresh air inside. Dinner at home with Patrick: chicken fricasse with vermouth (via The New York Times), focaccia roll with heirloom tomato and olive oil, water for me and sparkling water for Patrick. Dessert: the remainder of the donuts: glazed chocolate cake, glazed sour cream cake. Afterwards I rewatched Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e1: Inception and the Interpretation of Art on Kanopy this time with Patrick watching as well. Car shopping research. Over the past few days we have been rethinking about getting a new or used car. Options like Getaround are okay, but it's not as unlock-and-go as they make it sound. After walking a few blocks to the car, we still have to document the outside for (lack of) scratches and dents, take a selfie with driver's license, record the odometer, and so forth, before uploading it all. Doing this once in a while is tolerable, but if we wanted a car more frequently it's perhaps too tedious to tolerate. Our pandemic-era incentives: primarily for groceries that we can't get delivered and secondarily for activites that enable us to more quickly, easily, and flexibly get away from home, whether that's a weekender or a day trip or lunch in Golden Gate Park. Still not sure if we will do it, but we are thinking about it. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, currants; water. Weeded Google Contacts.

Tue Sep 8, 2020

Ran in place to Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e5: Contact: Science vs. Religion on Kanopy. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, blueberries, diced banana; water. Worked from home. Read CSS Layout News 267. Sprint standup. The sky was a little dark and yellowy today probably from wildfire smoke. Followup on Marissa's request about reordering rows in CKEditor. Read NNGroup's email newsletter. Letterhead followup with Angela. Planned vacation days. 1:1 with Eric. Followup with Diana K about the HR import process: Alt Dept. Followup with PC team about Mailchimp list maintenance. Backed up external hard drive files to two more locations. Lunch at home: leftovers from last night with freshly prepared steamed white rice, water. Began zipping folders in a data set intended to be uploaded to SharePoint to reduce the number of files SharePoint needs to sync because it seems like it can't handle it properly. More letterhead followup. David N in IT made a test iMac available to me for troubleshooting the SharePoint sync problems I have been encountering. I set up OneDrive and let it begin syncing my OneDrive folder. 1:1 with Anne. Created an instructional video for web editors: how to add a new person profile page to the website. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, currants; water.

Wed Sep 9, 2020

Walked and ran in place while identifying new things to watch on Kanopy—mostly from The Great Courses. SharePoint sync troubleshooting. Worked from home. Sprint standup. The sky was very dark and orangey today probably from wildfire smoke. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, blueberries, diced banana; water. SharePoint sync troubleshooting. Met with Anne and Sara H to review web editing for the academic calendars page. Received an unsolicited phone call from 415-534-4216 (Stinson Beach, CA) which I believe to be a scam because the voicemail talked about a car warranty expiring, and I do not own a car. Today Patrick rented a Getaround car to run errands and visit his mom, so for lunch we had planned to picnic in Golden Gate Park. But with today's unusually dark and orange skies, we instead got burgers and fries to go from Papa Mak's. To drink: root beer for Patrick, aranciata for me. Town Hall edit, html email build, and photo selection with Grant and Eric. Met 1:1 with Marissa to edit the Craik Lab alumni page. Dinner at home with Patrick: Patrick prepared teriyaki salmon with kale flatbread. Watched trailers for Dune and Star Trek: Discovery season 3 with Patrick. Thu Sep 10, 2020

Roku restarted unexpectedly while running in place while watching Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e4: The Adjustment Bureau, the Force, and Fate and I hadn't yet seen The Adjustment Bureau, so this convinced me to skip this one for now and instead I watched Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e6: Arrival: Aliens and Radical Transformation. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, diced banana; water.

Fri Sep 11, 2020

Ran in place while watching many various short clips on YouTube: Dune story summaries, Apple Store Marina Bay Sands, The Difference Between Anamorphic And Spherical Lenses Explained, How the food you eat affects your gut - Shilpa Ravella, New Orleans Second Line Dance | If Cities Could Dance | KQED, Why this font is everywhere (Cooper Black), and more. Patrick recently received a handful of his copies of If We Were Electric, and we opened the box today. He is happy. Sat Sep 12, 2020

Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e1: Medical Knowledge versus Misinformation on Kanopy in which I learned (or perhaps relearned), among other things, that there is no home cure for hiccups that is scientifically proven to work. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, diced peach; side of sliced nectarine; side of half a banana; water. Dusted and vacuumed. Continued troubleshooting SharePoint sync problems all day. Chatted on Zoom with Corinna about her website, her family's new home, and Patrick's first book. Web edits for Patrick's website. Lunch: leftover chicken fricassee with steamed white rice. Snack: pretzels, unsalted cashews. Finished playing Broken Age on iOS. This game's puzzles were eventually too hard for me. I did part of it on my own and then later had to rely on walkthroughs found on the web. Near the end because I failed to record something I couldn't make the hexipal play the drum enabling me to finish the game, so I watched someone else's video of the game end and then deleted the game. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom risotto, dinner roll with butter. Afterwards we watched Murder on the Orient Express (1974) on Netflix DVD (and I walked in place for all of it), breaking partway through for a dessert of banana bread pudding, previously frozen, topped with chocolate chips, then heated; milk. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice; side of prunes; water. I think I resolved the SharePoint sync problem, after about 8 weeks of troubleshooting. I'll probably write more about this within the next few days. Organized SharePoint files.

Sun Sep 13, 2020

Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e2: Myths about Water and Hydration on Kanopy. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced banana. Cleaned the bathroom. Cut my hair, showered. Cleaned the bathroom. Nap. Lunch: leftover chicken fricassee with steamed white rice. Covered logos on a new Thunderbolt 3 docking station with black tape and silver tape, then labeled its power supply, and, in the process, opening and repairing a Brother TC tape cartridge with help from YouTube. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Old Mandarin via Uber Eats: egg rolls, hot and sour soup (ordered "medium"), three-flavor dumplings, beef with string beans, sweet and sour shrimp, chicken fried rice. All the food was tasty. The "medium" hot and sour soup was too spicy for me, but I had expected that to be the case when we ordered, so not a problem. Afterwards we played Risk. It was our first time playing this game since purchasing it a really long time ago. Patrick went to bed. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice; side of prunes; water. Weight training: upper body—just starting to get back into this after a long break.

Mon Sep 14, 2020

Afterwards we watched Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e8: Doctor Who and Time Travel Paradoxes on Kanopy then half of Star Trek: The Next Generation s7:e11 Parallels on CBS All Access. I walked in place during these. Patrick went to bed. A new MacBook Pro arrived today. Backed up Patrick's computer with Time Machine to an external hard drive. Renamed Patrick's home folder; it had had a different name because we were trying to resolve a performance issue long ago. Transferred Patrick's laptop to the new laptop using macOS Migration Assistant. It first got stuck on "Starting up" while on wifi, so I quit and restarted using a Thunderbolt cable. Then it got stuck on "Looking for incompatible software" so I quit and restarted using the new Time Machine backup. Small bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, and prunes. Weight training: lower body. Laptop migration still not done when I went to bed over 3.5 hours later.

Tue Sep 15, 2020

Patrick's laptop migration completed, and I continued setup steps. Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e4: Dieting—Separating Myths from Facts on Kanopy. Breakfast at home: small bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced nectarine; water. Throughout the day I helped Patrick resolve a number of issues encountered following his laptop migration. For the most part it seems to have gone well. Worked from home. Sprint standup. D8 styling work all day: images. Added DEI content to PSPG for Tia T and Rebecca D. Lunch at home: leftover risotto, leftover Chinese food. Today was the first day in a long time with good air quality following this year's again-devastating wildfires, so I sat outside enjoying the sun and working for a while. Mailed a letter at the nearest mailbox. Met with Anne: linkchecking, vice chair roles, The Archive email messages. Began preparing an email to IT and Microsoft about SharePoint sync troubleshooting results. Dinner at home with Patrick: cow burgers with fixins, matchstick fries with spice blend, water, sauv blanc. Today is officially the date that Patrick became an award-winning, book-published writer. To celebrate, he baked chocolate chip cookies using a recipe from the internet, and I washed lots of dishes before, during, and after. I thought the cookies came out perfectly. We each ate two cookies with milk. Some cookies went into the sweets drawer, and some went into the freezer. Patrick went to bed. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk and prunes. I washed more dishes. Walked and ran in place. Weight training: core and upper body. Continued followup work for Patrick's laptop migration: troubleshot problems accessing network volumes, reconfigured backups, etc.

Wed Sep 16, 2020

Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e5: The Fallacy That Natural Is Always Better on Kanopy. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, blueberries, diced banana; water. Followup with IT and Microsoft about SharePoint sync problems. I consider the issue I encountered resolved via workaround, although the cause is still not clear. SharePoint consistently failed to sync folders containing certain archives of websites. I worked around the problem using a suggestion from Eric: compress the folders with zip, then remove the folders. OneDrive for Mac is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever encountered. Troubleshooting and resolving this problem took about two months. Worked outside for much of the day. Lunch: leftover Chinese food. Met with Cheryl C to make changes to Xiaokun S's profile page. Met with Anne to handle some web editing tasks that Eric assigned us. Delivered two digital letterhead templates to Mitra A. Posted two QBI events for Carolina L. Revised and posted the education unit orgchart. Dinner at home with Patrick: mushroom alfredo and fried eggs on spaghetti, water, sauv blanc. I washed dishes. Dessert: chocolate chip cookies and milk. Afterwards we finished watching Star Trek: The Next Generation s7:e11 Parallels on CBS All Access then watched Hollywood s1:e3 on Netflix. Patrick went to bed. Web maintenance and changes for Corinna's website. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced banana; water. Today I received notice for the refund for the federal tax return I filed in (July?).

Thu Sep 17, 2020

Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e6: Probiotics and Our Bacterial Friends on Kanopy. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced banana; water. Worked from home. Web edits: Education Unit. D8 theme work for James's image module. Small meal: leftover risotto. Patrick and I used a Getaround car near us today. He dropped me at UCSF Parnassus then continued without me to do some grocery shopping. I got my flu shot. The process was pretty simple. I entered at the hospital emergency entrance. A staffperson gave me a free surgical mask to exchange for the one I was wearing. I continued to Moffitt Cafe. There was no person at the entrance to greet me, so it took a few minutes for me to figure out where to stand to wait in line. Arriving at around 10:20 am, there were only about six persons ahead of me, so I did not wait long. The shot procedure was normal except I wore my mask the whole time and the providers wore PPE, some including face shields. I waited in the Med Sci lobby for Patrick to return. We drove home. Nap. Continued D8 work attempting to override a template but failed to find adequate instructions for doing so in a module. One page had incomplete and poorly explained documentation. Another page had a message thread with dozens of messages of people trying to figure it out. Small meal: leftover spaghetti. Created new test Teams teams: PLC and Other. Met with Anne to handle some web editing tasks that Eric assigned us. Patrick and I drove to Filoli to enjoy the gardens—no indoor tours in the mansion permitted. The early evening weather was warm and sunny. We enjoyed walking the grounds, Patrick's first time seeing Filoli in daylight. At one point we notably saw a banana slug. Afterwards at the cafe we ate chicken pesto on focaccia sandwiches. Patrick had a small glass of sauv blanc, rose for me. About $51 for the food. Patrick said the tickets were $25 each. Essentially everyone wore masks and adhered to social distancing guidelines. There were many guests, but it didn't feel crowded. Drove home. Patrick went to bed and will return the Getaround car in the morning. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, diced banana; water.

Fri Sep 18, 2020

Ran in place to Medical Myths, Lies, and Half-Truths: What We Think We Know May Be Hurting Us e7: Sugar and Hyperactivity on Kanopy then part of Switzerland - Gondola - Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn via Simon Rees on YouTube. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, cinnamon, diced pear; water. Worked from home. Sprint standup. Before Patrick returned the Getaround car, he got us pastries from B Patisserie. We each ate a ham and cheese croissant, heated. Patrick had coffee; I had water. I thought the croissant was delicious, but it included what Patrick believes was a bechamel, which I thought made it too rich and too creamy which interfered with the airiness and crunch that I wanted from a croissant. Impromptu meeting with Anne: how to reactivate a person profile page of someone who had left the School. Web editor training with Cheryl C and Emma G. Constant Contact demo with Eric D and Lesley S. For lunch we decided to do something different and order food delivery, which we don't usually do for lunch. We chose DoorDash because of a 25% off (up to $5) offer. The order was from The Taco Shop at Underdog. We watched the DoorDash map as the driver picked up our order and drove in the wrong direction. When we attempted to communicate with the driver, we received an error message: "This number cannot be used anymore." We later saw that our order was remade and a new driver assigned for pickup and delivery. The order eventually arrived, but in around 50 minutes rather than the 30 minutes promised. After eating the meal, I reported in the app that the order was late. The app said: "Thanks for letting us know—Hi Frank, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide compensation on this order due to your account history." I didn't realize that having an account history would be a factor. So, afterwards, I deleted the DoorDash app from all my devices. Met with Anne: Dean's Office page edits. Dinner at home with Patrick: light meal of falafel in pita with fixins, water, glass of sauv blanc. Watched The Adjustment Bureau on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Dessert: we each had one chocolate chip cookie with milk. Patrick went to bed. I washed dishes. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, prunes; water.

Sat Sep 19, 2020

Recharge Medical dev work: Drupal 8 core update from 8.9.2 to 8.9.6, stylesheets rework. Chatted with Tina for a few seconds on Facetime. She was at a park sitting with a friend. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Marnee Thai via Uber Eats: summer rolls, kang ka ree (curry chicken), bbq chicken, pad kee mao (pork with wide rice noodles), steamed jasmine rice, two thai iced teas. Delivery was on time. The kang ka ree and pad kee mao were unexpectedly too spicy for me to eat. Patrick enjoyed the meal. Afterwards we watched Sci-Phi: Science Fiction as Philosophy e4: The Adjustment Bureau, the Force, and Fate. Then we watched 27 minutes of Star Trek: The Next Generation: s5:e26 "Time's Arrow" on CBS All Access. I ran or walked in place while watching both. Water for both. Afterwards we finished watching Star Trek: The Next Generation: s5:e26 then s6:e1 "Time's Arrow" on CBS All Access. I ran or walked in place while watching both. Dessert: chocolate chip cookies and milk. Medium bowl of oatmeal with milk, pumpkin pie spice, blackberries; water. More Recharge Medical dev work: font pairing research.
