Fri Feb 1, 2019

Emailed in sick, day 2. Breakfast at home: two mandarin oranges; small, warm blueberry scone; hot water. Realized that we weren't hearing 5.1 surround sound from our TCL 32S305 Roku television through our Logitech Z906. I changed one of the television's audio settings from Auto Detect to Dolby D, DTS, and now it's working. I can tell because the Decode light is lit when playing a stream that is marked to contain 5.1 audio. House chores: trash bin maintenance, light vacuuming. Hot water with fresh lime juice. Lunch: cheese ravioli in marinara from a can. Snack: tortilla chips. I took two naps today. Dinner at home with Patrick: taco filling leftovers in corn tortillas.

Sat Feb 2, 2019

Breakfast at home: Patrick made banana bread. More cold recovery. Lunch at home with Patrick: tacos. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Sapporo Sushi and Ramen Izakaya (420 Judah Street) via Uber Eats. For various reasons I won't mention here (but I will tell you privately if you ask me) we agreed that we would not order from this restaurant again. Dessert: Patrick made and we shared a delicious chocolate cake in a mug topped with whipped cream from a can.

Sun Feb 3, 2019

Breakfast at home: banana bread from yesterday and some leftover sushi, hot water. More cold recovery and some house tidying and chores. Lunch: leftover sushi, hot water. Early dinner at home with Patrick: delivery ordered at 5:00 PM from Calibur (68 West Portal Avenue) via Uber Eats was delivered at 5:22 PM. Double cheddar with raw red onion and pickle, san pell, and chocolate shake for Patrick; single cheddar and mushrooms for me; garlic fries; regular fries. About $37 before an Uber Eats $12 booking fee. No problems with this order. (The fries weren't crispy, but you can't ever expect crispy food to be delivered crispy because it reabsorbs its own moisture during delivery, so this wasn't considered a problem. Patrick says you can expect McDonald's fries to stay crispy, and my reply was that they weren't really fries because of all the preservatives and mystery processing.) We'd order from Calibur again.

Mon Feb 4, 2019

Breakfast at home: banana bread, hot water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Inbox cleanup, task followup all day. Cold medications unexpectedly made me groggier than I had anticipated today. During the day we encountered some hail along with today's rain. Instead of lunch today I snacked on tortilla chips then later a breakfast bar. Rode UberX to SoMa. Met Patrick for couples counseling. Rode UberX to the Mission. Dinner with Patrick at Thanh Tam II: bbq shrimp with vermicelli noodles and hot tea for Patrick, rare beef and flank soup with vermicelli noodles, bean sprouts, and basil with thai iced tea for me. $27.02 before a $4 tip. Rode UberX home. Recharge Medical work: continued editing a blog post draft.

Tue Feb 5, 2019

Breakfast at home with Patrick: scrambled eggs, hash brown with ketchup, toast with butter, 8 ounces of orange juice. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. 1:1 with Eric. Siteimprove add users followup. Styling work all day, various tasks, including finishing link-imgthumbs with James. Asana task cleanup. Lunch at Beautifull!: curly kale salad, mac and cheese, herbed chicken breast, coconut water: about $19. Handled a Mailchimp task for Eric regarding stats and reporting. More styling work. Rode Uber Pool home. Troubleshot and resolved a problem with the front door sensor light not working: the switch to make it work had been turned off. Dinner at home with Patrick: tagliatelle with porcini, peas, bacon, and cream sauce. I labeled the switches near the front door to clarify what switch controlled what and what side was on and off. Set up one of our new Blue Pure 411 air purifiers in the bedroom. It's very simple to use and within a few minutes the room smelled different—possibly fresher? During setup I changed the pre-filter color from bright blue to charcoal gray. I labeled electric devices plugged into a power strip in the bedroom. Checked on iDrive backups. Archived photos and uploaded some to Flickr. Late snack: two fortune cookies. My fortunes: (1) You will be the guest of a gracious host, 04 15 26 39 42 5. (2) Soon you will get the recognition you deserve, 06 15 28 34 45 25.

Wed Feb 6, 2019

Breakfast at home with Patrick: cheesy grits, sunny-side-up eggs, toast with butter, 8 ounces of orange juice, water. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Asana task followup. Siteimprove work. Lunch at desk: leftover tagliatelle from last night. Get started buttons work: Photoshop comp. In the afternoon the office was preoccupied with news of a dramatic fire taking place eight blocks away at Geary Boulevard and Parker Street adjacent to Hong Kong Lounge II. The building that the restaurant is in is charred significantly, and I watched some live footage via Twitter searching on geary and fire and choosing Latest. Flames reached three and four stories high. After work I ran a few errands before going home. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from Seniore's Pizza via Uber Eats: medium cheese pizza with mushrooms and italian sausage, onion rings, fried zucchini, tap water. We ordered at 6:56 pm and received the order on time at 7:35 pm. The pizza was delicious. The onion rings were mostly good; at least one very large onion ring was inedible because not enough of the dry layers were removed. The zucchini coating was a tad too thick and the zucchini cut a tad too thin to be satisfying; it was hard to chew but not inedible. While waiting for our delivery I set up the second Blue Pure 411 air purifier midway between the living room and kitchen, again choosing the dark charcoal pre-filter color over the bright blue. While doing so I had to rearrange electronic components on top of the bookcase, which inadvertently caused the internet to go out. I learned later that there's a toggle switch on the router to turn wifi on and off that I must have hit, so I labeled that button on the router accordingly in case I later forget. Dessert: Patrick made cookies with chocolate chips, coconut, and candied ginger based on a recipe in the Mrs. Fields Cookie Book. House chores: washed dishes.

Thu Feb 7, 2019

Pre-breakfast at home: an apple. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Late breakfast from The View Cafe: egg, bacon, and cheddar on english muffin; water. Siteimprove work. Followup on CSS reaching production today. Lunch at desk: leftover tagliatelle. Update from the Dean retrospective meeting. D8 migration audit review meeting. Asana task followup. Walked and rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover fried foods with dipping sauce trio, leftover pizza, water. Afterwards Patrick made us both a cocktail containing gin and grapefruit juice. Our new Blue Pure 411 air purifiers emit too much light, particularly in a bedroom at night while sleeping, so in my solution I used scissors to cut a 4.5-mm circle out of 2-inch green Frogtape painters tape and affixed it to the air purifier switch where the lights are. This doesn't block any of the vents, so it should be pretty safe, and it doesn't interfere with the touch operation of the power switch. The tape is translucent, so some light still shows through, which is good so that you can see what setting it's on, but afterwards it's a lot more comfortable lightwise at night. To get a 4.5-mm circle, I traced around the base of a bottle of Fees Brothers orange flower water. If you have a small bottle of bitters, that likely will do just as well. If you try this and it's still too bright for you, just repeat the procedure again, putting the second layer of painter's tape on top of the first. (Later I did indeed apply the second layer—it's perfect.) Today after two months I finally received a replacement 10-inch Calphalon Contemporary Nonstick fry pan after returning on December 4 a similar pan under warranty because the non-stick coating had eventually failed. In my experience Calphalon has always been very good about honoring their lifetime warranties, and this was no exception. The delivery of the replacement was delayed somewhat because they had somehow shipped it to the wrong location—seemingly another Calphalon facility also in Ohio. A bit frustrating, but the replacement eventually did make its way to me after I notified them of the problem. Other companies that I firmly trust to honor their warranties are Peak Design and Arcade Belts. House chores.

Fri Feb 8, 2019

Breakfast at home with Patrick: pain perdu with peaches (from frozen), maple syrup, and diced pecans; hot assam tea. Walked and rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Installed Karabiner Elements which was formerly known as KeyRemap4MacBook so that I could disable only CommandLeft+Tab the overuse of which over many decades I suspect has been causing pain and numbness in my left hand and wrist. I spent over an hour trying to figure it out and failed, though I did find a lot of interesting key mappings which led me to a lot of interesting ergonomic keyboards. I posted a question to the Google Group for it but since there seem to be a lot of unanswered posts I am not hopeful for a reply or solution. Recently at my work telephone I have been receiving voicemail messages from a scammer. The phone number that appears for me is 1-877-799-0999 "TOLL FREE CALL". I received two identical voicemails about two hours apart. So annoying. Styling work. Susie said to go home early. Rode Uber Pool home. Cocktails with Patrick: plantation punch. Dinner at home with Patrick: tortellini in pork bone brodo. Watched half of Star Trek: Discovery s2:e3.

Sat Feb 9, 2019

Before I awoke, Patrick ate cereal and milk for breakfast. We walked together to Antigua Cafe where I had a plain breakfast croissant sandwich and small chai tea latte and Patrick had a small mocha. We rode Muni then BART to Lake Merritt Station in Oakland then walked one block to The World of Charles and Ray Eames at Oakland Museum of California ($19.95 each, includes admission to the other museum exhibits). We both enjoyed the large exhibit. My favorite parts were discovering that the Eameses were also communicators in addition to being designers and observing similarities in how their work might probably have influenced designs found in the Walt Disney Family Museum, particularly in communicating different images on multiple screens as part of a single presentation. Afterwards we visited the gift shop and garden. The garden's sculptures were disappointing to me. All day today moderate rain fell now and again and somehow we encountered only a few drops briefly while walking to lunch at Nido Kitchen and Bar (510-444-NIDO, 444 Oak Street, Oakland): horchata ($4) and two tacos plate for Patrick (one: muslito [chamoy glazed chargrilled chicken thigh, red onion escabeche, citrus-tomatillo salsa], two: guiso de res [stewed beef in chile negro, grilled onions, salsa asada], $13), water and carne asada [grilled bavette steak, potato, scrambled egg, refried black bean, queso fresco, guacamole, salsa de chile cascabel], $18. All the food and drink were delicious. Service by Noemi C was very good. $37.87 before a $7 tip. Rode BART then Muni home. Evening cocktail: brandy milk punch. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover tortellini in pork bone brodo, Hint cherry. Rewatched Star Trek: Discovery s2:e3 on CBS All Access with Patrick and popcorn, then watched clips on YouTube by myself. Installed a Mojave update for Patrick's computer. Mended an elbow hole in a brown waffle-knit long-sleeve t-shirt by hand. Attempted to mend an Amsterdam windmill refrigerator magnet with superglue but it didn't hold so I threw the magnet away. Recharge Medical work: Coolsculpting changes. Archived documents. Pantry organization. Sharpened several pairs of scissors with a small, handheld Fiskars scissors sharpener. Today while at Antigua I had noticed that I had left my iPhone X at home. We didn't go back for it. The thing I missed the most: accessing my notes in Simplenote. Next-most-missed: the camera.

Sun Feb 10, 2019

Breakfast at home: I prepared for myself a one-egg omelet with cheese, green onions, and parsley; one hash brown; small side of grits; 8 ounces of orange juice. Spent the day at home working on various InDesign projects involving vieux carre cocktail menus for home. For lunch I prepared for myself a bowl of fried rice with vegetables. In the afternoon I made live a new blog post for Recharge Medical. Dinner at home with Patrick: Ina Garten's meatloaf with instant mashed potatoes. Rode Uber Pool to SFJAZZ for Kid Koala's Nufonia Must Fall. This show was one of the most original and perfectly beautiful things I have ever seen in my life, and I am in awe of how it all came together. Highly recommended. In addition to the show he also performed Drunk Trumpet and Moon River. Rode UberX home. Late snack: shrimp chips, tortilla chips.
