Woke around 3, had trouble getting back to sleep, finally did after about 2 hours. Woke. Dropped the car off for maintenance. Rode my bike to work. Breakfast at the cafeteria: potato frittata, grilled potatoes, wheat toast. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Supp app project work in Drupal: added stuff that must remain secret. Lots of calendar management. Comm team meeting. I brought rainier cherries to share. Didn't really eat a lunch today, but the cherries held me. Began writing a communications team strategic goals document. Rode my bike home. Dinner at home with Patrick, Danny, Drew, Phil, Romy: coq au vin, garden salad, mashed potatoes. Dessert: fresh banana ice cream, bourbon butter pecan ice cream, chocolate chip shortbread. Coffee: Sumatra decaf from Henry's House of Coffee, Peruvian decaf from Bicycle Coffee Company. Some of our guests dislike Bicycle Coffee Company saying it has sour notes to it, but I couldn't taste anything sour in it. Ordered a new MacBook Air, my first laptop, if you don't count the Toshiba Libretto subnotebook I had in the late 1990s. I wanted smaller over more power/battery, so I got the 11-inch instead of the 13-inch. I knew the RAM was not upgradeable so I got 8 GB. I didn't need a lot of disk space, but I knew I needed more than 64 GB, so I got 128 GB. The new MacBook Pro has a Retina display, but I didn't really care about that because I'm figuring it will be at least a year or two before most third-party OS X apps have been updated to make good use of it. I added a spare 45-watt MagSafe 2 power adapter and 3 years of AppleCare. Apple threw in a $100 Back To School Gift Card for free. Grand total = $1,664.06 after $122.06 tax via the Apple higher education store. I don't plan to use a laptop often, but when I travel it's more efficient to get things done with a laptop than with my iPhone. Some websites I might want to use still use Adobe Flash, so I didn't want an iPad. At work I need a new Mac Pro or iMac and at home I need a new iMac but the latest rumors make it seem as though those purchases will have to wait until 2013.
