Sat Apr 1, 2017
Complimentary continental breakfast in the Hotel Normandie dining room. Bradbury Building, Grand Central Market. Early lunch at Ramen Hood: the OG ramen with vegan egg, original ramune. The nearby line for Eggslut was mindbogglingly long. Saw but did not ride Angel's Flight; it appeared to be closed. Took the stairs to Museum of Contemporary Art where $15 admission was covered by reciprocal membership: Kerry James Marshall: Mastry, Patrick Staff: Weed Killer. Others from the colllection: Man Ray, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Louise Nevelson. Had trouble getting a ride back to the hotel via Uber or Lyft but finally it worked. That doesn't happen that often. Met Will and Tom, walked to their car parked at a nearby garage. Will drove us to Burbank Town Center where we ate at Hokkaido Seafood Buffet then watched Beauty and the Beast (2017) at Burbank 16 AMC Theatres: $15 per person.
Sun Apr 2, 2017
Archived receipts to camera roll via Scannable. Complimentary continental breakfast in the Hotel Normandie dining room. Rode Uber Pool to The Huntington, participating in a 2.5-hour walking tour of the highlights, visiting 10 of the 15 gardens, led by docent John whose commentary was excellent. Afterwards I ate a late lunch at Border Grill: a delicious tostada salad with steak ($14), iced tea ($2.50), sitting on the patio with a panoramic view of the desert and palm gardens. Visited the European collection, rested in the shade outside. Rode Uber Pool to Hotel Normandie. Refreshed. Dinner with Will and Tom at Thai Patio after learning that their favorite Thai restaurant nearby had permanently closed: appetizer combo, yellow curry chicken, shrimp pad thai, and a ground pork dish.
Mon Apr 3, 2017
Rode Uber Pool to breakfast at Blue Cube: breakfast sandwich, which was disappointing because (a) it was American cheese, and (b) it wasn't even a whole egg—just a thin layer of egg white. Visited City Hall observation deck and rotunda, Grand Park, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, DWE, WDCH, Concert Hall Cafe: parsnip and potato soup, half roast beef and bleu cheese sandwich, honest iced tea. Rode Uber Pool to LACMA, dozing briefly along the way. LACMA ($25 includes Picasso special exhibit): John McLaughlin Paintings: Total Abstraction, Picasso and Rivera: Conversations Across Time, Richard Serra: Band, Chris Burden: Metropolis II, Robert Irwin: Miracle Mile, Los Angeles to New York: Dwan Gallery, Robert Smithson: Gyrostasis, Robert Grosvener: Untitled (yellow), Tony Smith: Smoke, Henri Matisse: La Gerbe, Apostles of Nature: Jugendstil and Art Nouveau, An Irruption of the Rainbow: Color in 20th-Century Art, Twombly, Warhol, Lichtenstein, Ruscha, Oldenburg (Pool Balls, Typewriter Eraser), Celmins (Comb), Miró, Magritte, Calder, Noguchi, Mondrian, William Eggleston (yellow car, yellow wall). I had time to see only about half of what was on view. Dinner with Will and Tom at Sizzler. They each had the buffet. I had steak and lobster with veggies.
Tue Apr 4, 2017
Checked out of The Normandie and stored luggage with the front desk. Walked to brunch at The Commissary (cobb salad, The Cali citrus juice: about $29 before tip). I sat at the bar and had friendly chats with both the bartender and a local. Retrieved luggage. Rode Uber Pool to the Hammer Museum which let me check my two bags (one carryon and one messenger bag). Andrea Bowers, Simon Denny (Blockchain), Dubuffet, Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Degas, Pissarro, Corot, Moreau, Jimmie Durham: At the Center of the World. Lunch at TLT Food (born from The Lime Truck): carnitas quesadilla, coconut limeade, peach limeade: $15.77. Retrieved bags. Rode Uber Pool to Burbank Bob Hope Airport taking us through Franklin Canyon Park. Rode Uber Pool home. On this vacation I rewatched Iron Man (2008) on downloaded Amazon Prime Video and The Commitments (1991) on downloaded Netflix and began rewatching Trading Places (1983) on downloaded Amazon Prime Video.

PharmD redesign work with Joel: created /admissions/policies, reworked /admissions, removed /admissions/programs-events. Lunch at Lavash: chicken fesenjān with rice, water. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Microsites work: Calpoison build. Uber Pool was unusually expensive today, likely due to the rain storm, so I took Lyft Line instead. Dinner at home with Patrick: Green Chef blackened shrimp salad with green goddess dressing, artichokes, beets, avocado. This dish was too spicy for me. Today I continued rewatching Trading Places (1983) on downloaded Amazon Prime Video. Late snack: salt and pepper pistachios, water. Began work on taxes.

Sun Apr 9, 2017
Pre-brunch: one navel orange. Rode Uber Pool to the Castro. Wrote a review of Hotel Normandie on Orbitz. My experience: I needed a hotel in this area, and I chose Hotel Normandie over the nearby Line Hotel primarily because of price and value, especially considering that a continental breakfast buffet and evening wine reception are included—both very nice. I found my room very clean and very tastefully decorated. The decor is modern antique combined with suggestions of art deco and early-20th-century charm—a pleasing blend of old with new. Koreatown isn't very clean. As of March 2017 it's at the bottom of the top 50 in crime by neighborhood—search the web for [latimes crime by neighborhood]. What I liked: Personable and efficient staff, decor, breakfast buffet, wine reception. What could be improved: My top request is a safe in the room. I wish the toilet filled with water more quietly after flushing. The location and things to do nearby: 1. the lobby, 2. Cassell's, 3. ask about the secret bar nearby, named in October 2016 to the top 50 bars in the world by Bloomberg. Rode Uber Pool to the Castro. Brunch at Finn Town with Romy, Drew, and Phil. (Paul had planned to attend but canceled due to transit problems getting across the Bay Bridge.) Doughnut holes with vanilla cream and chocolate sauce and pancakes with lemon curd and huckleberry syrup to share. Romy had granola with yogurt and fruit, Drew had a Finntown chop salad, Phil had a fried egg sandwich, I had a fried chicken sandwich with fries. We enjoyed our visit except it was far too noisy for our tastes from both patrons talking and raucous music. Errands in the Castro. Rode Uber Pool home. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: tuna mac and cheese, sirloin and vegetable soup from a can. Watched Twin Peaks s1:e4 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick.
Mon Apr 10, 2017

PharmD current students microsite and Calpoison microsite builds all day. I also resolved a problem with Rx for Change being unavailable. Lunch at A.G. Ferrari: verdure sampler: fingerling potatoes, quinoa, beets; water. Rode Uber Pool to the Tenderloin. Dinner at Le Colonial with Patrick: appetizer tasting platter, for Patrick: 5-ounce bo bit tet (petit grilled New York steak banh-mi-style served with toasted baguette, pickled vegetables, Vietnamese pork pâté and herbs and chili-smoked aioli), for me: bo luc lac (wok-seared filet mignon cubes, sweet-savory soy, pickled red onion, butter lettuce and watercress, fingerling potatoes, cherry tomatoes and crispy lotus chips). Dessert: one chocolate mousse (cardamom dark chocolate mousse with a shot of anise liquor) and, on the house, one chocolate cake (flourless chocolate cake with peanuts, caramel sauce, and chocolate peanut butter ice cream). We very much enjoyed our meal.

Got Handyprint to recognize our copier, but it failed to print, I think because our copier is locked down with accounting codes. Helped Joel with a request for our old exiting employee template. Asana task followup. Susie gave me a ride home. Dinner at home with Patrick: toasted sandwich italian herb-roasted turkey with cheddar and creme fraiche on garlic rosemary; shoestring fries with ketchup; white wine. Watched Twin Peaks s1:e7 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Patrick and I had a productive chat with upstairs neighbor Nick following a noise disturbance at 11:45 PM.
Sat Apr 15, 2017
Slept in. Breakfast: leftovers. Mounted a new paper towel holder inside one of our kitchen cabinets. Recharge Medical web work: skin care pages prep. Vacuumed. Sewing projects: mended a turquoise long-sleeve shirt, altered a black, small Uniqlo merino wool sweater that Patrick no longer wanted. Dinner at home with Patrick from Sprig: savory braised beef, carolina bbq pork plate, mini baguette. I liked the food, but it was pricey for what we received. Regular delivery, say from EAT24 or Grubhub, seems a better value, but we wanted to try different kinds of meals that aren't available on those services. Troubleshot problems with Patrick's Bowers and Wilkins MM1 speakers which had unexpectedly stopped working properly several weeks ago. I was unable to resolve the problem, and I believe they are simply defective after about two years after purchase. Our Logitech Z906 speakers also have encountered problems; they will immediately turn off by themselves. I completely unassembled them from Patrick's desk area and will test them after moving them to my desk area. Watched part of Terms of Endearment (1983) on Netflix DVD with Patrick.
Sun Apr 16, 2017

Rode Uber Pool home. Dinner at home with Patrick: pork chops, tabouli, whole wheat dinner roll with butter, red wine, san pell. Followup with Joe C about a problem with Outlook. Followup with Ruben about Calpoison DNS and content. For lunch I tried to eat at a new restaurant called Takuya but when I arrived it looked like it was closed and the space emptied. Strange for a restaurant that had been open less than four months. Watched part of Twin Peaks s2:e1 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick.
Thu Apr 20, 2017
Breakfast at home: deli turkey, cheddar, and egg on english muffin; water. Rode Muni then BART to Oakland. Walked to Oakland Marriott. Attended Edward Tufte's one-day course Presenting Data and Information, which I enjoyed very much. For lunch I tried first at The Trappist because of high ratings on Yelp but when I arrived there was only one bartender and five patrons, no one eating. It seemed the wrong place for lunch, so I looked elsewhere at a few places before ending up at OB's Cafe. A sign outside said cajun cuisine, so I went inside and asked, "Where do you get your bread?" The man said that his brother made it, so I told him I would try the shrimp po-boy. When it arrived, it was on a burger bun instead of French bread. Patrick later told me I needed to be more specific. It was tasty and messy. The shrimp was the right size (not tiny, not jumbo) and right texture and seemed very fresh with a perfectly crisp coating. The lettuce was a leaf of green leaf lettuce rather than julienned iceberg, but still enjoyable. Tap water in a wine glass, surprised to get glass at this casual of a restaurant. $10 after a $1 tip. Tips for attending Tufte's talk: bring something paper to write on; he asks that mobile phones and other noisemakers are turned off. Also, bring a small, discreet light source that's not your phone; sometimes the lights are off entirely, so you can't see what you're writing if you want to take notes. Arrive early for reading hour. Rode BART then Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Green Chef lemon-pepper tuna orzo with arugula, fennel and pasta salad, sauteed green beans. Finished watching Twin Peaks s2:e1 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Recharge Medical work: adjusted the stylesheet to have a new name to force removal from cache.
Fri Apr 21, 2017
Breakfast at home: one fuji apple and a bowl of granola with milk. Rode Uber Pool to UCSF Parnassus. PharmD redesign meeting in S922. A large power outage occurred this morning in San Francisco. We were not affected at Parnassus. Lunch at Panda Express: Panda bowl with brown rice and chicken and mushrooms, ate outside in the sun on the stairs next to the library. My fortune: You never hesitate to tackle the most difficult problems. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. The power was still off; only Michelle was in our office. Dropped off Tufte books, powered my iMac down and unplugged it. Rode Uber Pool home. SMDC site build. Dinner at home with Patrick: Green Chef mediterranean flatbreads with roasted beet and kale salad, sun-dried tomato hummus, san pell, red wine. Watched Twin Peaks s2:e2 on Netflix instant watch with Patrick.

Sun Apr 23, 2017
Slept about 3.5 or 4 hours on the 5-hour flight. After alighting I encountered John K then accepted an invitation to join him to ride in to the city on the rental car of Aimee D (Hook 42) and Tom B and baby Brian. They dropped us at our hotel, the Days Inn Baltimore (100 Hopkins Place). Our rooms were not yet ready, so we checked our bags, got breakfast at Saturday Morning Cafe and walked the waterfront, seeing the many historic ships from outside. We still had time to kill, so we visited the National Aquarium which was expensive ($40 per adult) yet worth the price. I saw things I think I hadn't seen before, including horseshoe crab, striped burrfish, lookdown, puffins, yabby. I had forgotten about John's biology background; he was identifying species from many yards away before we walked up to the sign and he was basically correct every time. We were both yawning frequently due to lack of sleep, but we managed to see just about everything in the aquarium. John had somehow torn a seam in his dress jacket, so we spent some time looking for a place that might mend it (impossible on a Sunday) or where he might buy a new jacket (we found a few places but none to his liking). At a Starbucks at The Gallery Mall we had a good laugh when I failed to recognize the Baltimore accent of the sales associate. I thought she had asked me what sauce I wanted for the unsweetened iced tea I had ordered, and after a few awkward seconds John told me she meant what size—not what sauce. I returned to the hotel while John met some Acquia people for an Orioles baseball game. I checked in. By now Eric D had arrived. We dined at Pratt Street Ale House, chicken chesapeake sandwich for him, crab mac and cheese for me. I learned that a growler is a term for a small jug of beer. I took a note that he recommended The Witness on Steam after we talked about games for a bit. I am not sure if my notes for the remainder of today are completely accurate, but here they are. Dinner with Eric and John K: John orders a crab salad. (Maybe John joined us after we finished eating?) Nap. Walked the waterfront with Eric D. We encountered Shawn D, Mark, and Carson at (where?). Eric D recommends Lodi and Amador County zinfandels.
