Rode Muni L to Van Ness Station then walked to UCSF Mission Center Building because there were no timely Muni options for the remainder of the route. Today was the first day the new iPad Air (5th generation) became available, and I purchased one for Danielle. Code jam with John, Eric, Richie, and, later, Jonathan. I began work on the syncfiles script to make it smarter so that it would work for any site, not just pharmacy ones. Lunch with John, Eric, and Richie at SOMA StrEat Food Park. I had a very delicious pork sandwich from Roli Roti, water from my Contigo water bottle. John drove Eric and me to Laurel Heights. Surprise party for David with cupcakes, rice cakes. Among other things we talked about carrots, rabbits, live performances, earaches, knees. Began synching our Google Analytics accounts with Google Webmaster Tools. Rode UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Picked up new purchases that were delivered. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home: leftovers. Troubleshot problems with Zippo lighters while trying to light candles. Bath.

Unpacked the backpack I had ordered so that I have a safe way to carry my camera. After trying it on and reconfiguring the insides, I decided that the Tamrac Evolution 8 is way too big for what I need. I knew about but didn't purchase the smaller Evolution 6 because I also wanted a place to put an iPad or 11-inch MacBook Air and the Evo 6 doesn't have that feature. I tried adjusting the internal compartments so that my camera would fit better, but it was just too much space, and I don't have that many accessories. It was hard to judge from the photos online; when I purchased it I really thought it would work. Breakfast at home: Patrick brought drinks and pastries from Peet's following his morning practice. Shopped online for a different bag. Took photos of purchased items in packaging for archiving with the new camera. Vacuumed. Cut my hair, showered. Wrapped gifts. Dropped the backpack to be returned at The UPS Store. Mailed a package. Zippo lighters still failing. Edited photos from Vancouver trip. Dinner at home with Patrick: I made a stir-fry with mixed vegetables and meatless bacon-flavored seitan, steamed rice, hot water. Watched The Best of Wham! (2001) on Netflix DVD with Patrick—fun. The clothing and hairstyles are especially chuckleworthy. I think these videos held up pretty well after a quarter of a century. Ate a fortune cookie for dessert. My fortune: A big fortune will descend upon you this year. Edited and uploaded photos.

Restarted Flickr upload due to upload problems from last night. Rode Muni to Powell Street Station. Met Danny in Union Square. Dim sum at Four Seas. Danny was disappointed because they did not have chicken feet. We shopped but bought very little. At Brooks Brothers we met Chavis. Near Banana Republic Danny encountered a friend named Joel and Joel's friend Rosalee. We stopped at Starbucks for beverages. We tried to see the new Thor film but Danny had misunderstood advance tickets being on sale as an indication that the film was open but we learned that it doesn't open until November 8. We walked in Yerba Buena Gardens. More shopping. Very early dinner at Miss Saigon. Rode the F streetcar to the Castro. More shopping. Danny took a bus to yoga. I rode Muni L home. Today was the first day I used the new G6 camera. I enjoyed it. All good experiences; nothing frustrating so far. Reviewed and uploaded photos. Recharge Spa work: resolved some minor issues found with Google Webmaster Tools. Chatted on Facebook with Will. Began creating some new style tiles for Danny.
Mon Nov 4, 2013
iTunes Library cannot be saved (Error -54) while attempting to sync my iPhone to my iMac. Repaired disk permissions in Disk Utility—this resolved the problem for me. Installed some new typefaces. Patrick left today for a nearby retreat and housesitting and dogsitting. Breakfast at home: granola with fresh, diced apple; soy milk. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Management activities, calendar management. Followup with CASHNet account problems. 1-on-1 with Rodney. 1-on-1 with Cindy. Chatted with Joel about the Jazzee supp app prereqs page. The November 1 deadline passed with no system outage—hooray! Late lunch from Carmelina's: tostada with chicken, ate in Millberry Union, read my camera's user manual on my iPad. Posted an updated P1 schedule for Lucia. Calendar management. asana issue followup. Problems encountering "access forbidden" error messages while trying to check Muni NextBus times, not sure if it's their web server or Straight Talk. Content work in Drupal. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Continued trying to synch Google Analytics with Google Webmaster Tools for all our sites. Rode Muni 6 to 9th and Judah. Walked to Citi Shoes, browsed. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home: ramen noodles with diced red onion, bell pepper, extra-firm tofu, mixed greens. Watched part of Star Trek (2009) via iTunes purchase. Style tiles work for Danny.
Tue Nov 5, 2013
No breakfast before leaving home. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Breakfast at The View Cafe: egg and cheese on english muffin. Minor web updates to the student handbook for Cindy. Sent a mass email reminding everyone to wait a few months before installing new operating systems like Windows 8.1 and OS X Mavericks. (We received reports that Mavericks is not compatible with PGP.) Content work in Drupal. Lunch: leftover mixed veggie stir-fry and rice from home. Snack from The View Cafe: gluten-free peanut-butter cookie. This turned out to be very crunchy, and I prefer chewy or mostly chewy cookies. Content work in Drupal. Linkchecking, kiosk work. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home by myself: I ate leftover lentil soup from a deli, and I steamed a Chinese bun made by Danny, Green and Black's hot chocolate with 2% milk. Chatted briefly on Facetime with Tina.
Wed Nov 6, 2013
I dreamt last night that a large earthquake had occurred and I was in a city called Oakdale which was a little south of Oakland. I was at someone's house in the back yard. I saw a nearby freeway and the pavement was destroyed for a long stretch, and no cars could pass in either direction. Rode Muni to work, had a terrible time of it because the route schedule recently changed without warning. While catching the Tan shuttle from Parnassus I encountered Rodney who was traveling to Laurel Heights to meet Chris O regarding a noisy vidconf server. Rodney and I talked on the shuttle, and I joined him for a few minutes to see the server and provide some consult. Content work in Drupal. Lunch at Eliza's: hot and sour soup, mixed vegetables with shrimp, brown rice, hot tea, ice water. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Content and styling work in Drupal. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Did some work on the spare workstation for Lisa to ensure that anyone can log in with a guest account to use the scanner. Rode UberX to the Mission. Dinner at PDDR with Danny, Drew, Phil, Romy: chinese food takeout. Afterwards I helped Danny with some business plan work, and we watched an episode of a television show called Blacklist which I found predictable yet watchable. Rode UberX home. At 9:05 AM and 1:58 PM today after encountering Access Forbidden error messages while trying to view NextBus times I ran speed tests on my iPhone 3GS via cellular (Straight Talk via AT&T) and the results were terrible: 0.00 Mbps down, and no better than 0.11 Mbps up. I thought for a while that my Straight Talk APN settings were lost and I needed to reset them, but some other things on my phone worked as expected, so I didn't. I ended up not needing to reset Straight Talk, and my phone inexplicably started working again after some time.
Thu Nov 7, 2013
Speed test on my iPhone 3GS at home over wifi: 4.77 Mbps down, 0.94 Mbps up. Breakfast: I steamed a Chinese bun made by Danny. Rode Muni L and 43 to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Lots of content work in Drupal. Very late lunch from The View Cafe: half veggie california sandwich on multigrain with pickle quarter slice. Lots of content work in Drupal. Stopped at Walgreen's for Tom's of Maine toothpaste. They carried 29 versions of Colgate, 25 of Crest, 7 of Sensodyne, 2 of Aquafresh, 2 of Arm & Hammer, and 1 of Tom's of Maine and they were out of Tom's of Maine. Dinner at Pasta Pomodoro. I had a coupon for a free entree. Grilled salmon with cannellini beans and baby kale, hot tea for me; half-moon ravioli filled with shrimp, pancetta and smoked mozzerlla in a creamy lemon caper sauce, red wine, ice water for Patrick. For dessert we shared an order of tiramisu. Service was excellent, as usual. Rode UberX home: $17. Put the trash out. Troubleshot CrashPlan problems with Patrick's iMac.
Fri Nov 8, 2013
Rode Muni to UCSF Mission Bay. Breakfast at The Pub: egg and cheese on english muffin, a banana: about $4. Sharecase. Rode Muni to Powell Street Station with Eric and Richie. Met Patrick and Tina. Tina arrived in San Francisco today. Dinner at Samovar with Tina and Patrick. We shared: mini Moorish platter, ayurvedic tea service with masala chai, paleolithic tea service with blood orange pu-ehr tea, cacao mint tea. For dessert: caramel pot de creme, coconut rice pudding, assorted cookies. We all thought the pot de creme was the best of the three desserts. The ayurvedic tea service is very good. I slightly prefer the japanese tea service over the ayurvedic because it's a more complex meal in that there's a greater variety of different foods beautifully arranged. Patrick left for a petsitting stop. Tina and I shopped at H&M (Tina bought a jacket for $25), flagship Walgreen's, and UNIQLO (with the rainbow staircase) then rode Muni home.
Sat Nov 9, 2013
UberX to Pier 15 with Patrick and Tina: $35. We visited the Exploratorium and the Tactile Dome. It was my first visit to the Exploratorium since its move from the Palace of Fine Arts to Pier 15. It's huge now, and it feels like there is at least twice as much stuff to see and do. The Tactile Dome was again a great experience; I loved it so much I went twice. Patrick played a theramin! Although the space was large, it was a very crowded day, and after a while the crowds became too much for all of us and we needed food and drink. Tina made some purchases at TCHO. We walked to the Ferry Building Marketplace. Tried to get in to Slanted Door but it was full for the day and everything in the Ferry Building was too crowded for us. We ate at Osha Thai in Embarcadero Center: thai iced teas for Patrick and Frank, young coconut juice for Tina, we shared: frog legs, volcanic beef, coconut shrimp, lemongrass sea bass. My favorites: volcanic beef for the sauce and tenderness and onion rings then the coconut shrimp for the texture. Surprise drink ordered by Tina: white gummi bear shots for all. We returned briefly to the Ferry Building for some carrot and green onions. Tina also made a stop at Miette. Taxi home: $40 after a generous tip. Relaxed. Matt S and Holly stopped by for a visit. Tina prepared a pre-birthday dinner: soba noodle salad, seaweed, ginger, scallions, red onion, cucumber, roasted cashews, sesame, dried cherries, parsley, seared tofu croutons, almond butter vinaigrette.
Sun Nov 10, 2013
Found a fortune in my jacket pocket: You'll accomplish more later if you have a little fun this weekend. Woke with a congested nose this morning and used 12 tissues within 2 hours, so I know I have some kind of cold. Tina and I visited a nearby cafe called Antigua—very charming and personable. Tina left for home at around 10:30 AM. I did some cleaning despite feeling under the weather. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Cold symptoms stopped inexplicably by early afternoon, but I stayed home and rested just to be sure. Chatted with Neil G and Neesha B who called from San Antonio. Attempted to watch Life in a Day (2011) on Netflix DVD with Patrick but stopped after only a few minutes. I did not find it interesting and do not recommend it. Watched Cabaret (1972) on purchased DVD with Patrick. Patrick left for dogsitting. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Dinner at home by myself: leftover sesame noodle salad, red wine. Watched the remainder of Star Trek (2009) from the last time I watched it partway.
Mon Nov 11, 2013
No cold symptoms this morning. Patrick returned with groceries then left for teaching and petsitting at Yoshi's. Breakfast: 2 hash browns, 2 pieces of spelt toast, 2 eggs over easy. Wrote thank you cards. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Lunch: TJ's chicken, barley, and vegetable soup; various small cookies from yesterday from Antigua. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr and Geni. House chores. Nap. Dinner at home by myself: I made veggie fried rice with extra firm tofu, green bell pepper, green onions, sliced mushrooms, tamari, salt, pepper. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Calendar management. Dessert: cookies from Antigua Coffee Shop. Back pain from House of Air is pretty much all gone—whew.
Tue Nov 12, 2013
Breakfast at home: granola with fresh, diced apple and unsweetened soy milk, hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Calendar management. Listserv management. Content work in Drupal. Edited the new Update from the Dean. Lunch: leftover veggie fried rice, water. Met with Rodney and Greg about the SPS project, helped Rodney resolve some symlink issues with a local dev environment, did some styling work, covered a few other issues. Edited the new Update from the Dean. Asana task followup. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Picked up a package. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home: TJ's chicken, barley, and vegetable soup. Unpacked the new camera bag I had ordered. This one is a LowePro Passport Sling II in mica and green. It took a long time adjusting the padded compartment to fit my camera properly. The velcro permits only a certain number of configurations. Installed Apple updates on my MacBook Air. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Late snack: popcorn from a saucepan with canola oil and salt. Style tiles work for Danny.
Wed Nov 13, 2013

Thu Nov 14, 2013
Breakfast at home: 2 eggs in 2 biscuits from a can, hot water. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Rode Muni to work. One driver on route 66 has likely been sick, so lately it has been every 40 minutes between busses rather than 20 minutes. I rode the L train to Forest Hill then a bus 43 to Parnassus. Office party with lots and lots of food, mostly sweets. Don K inquired about the laptop on my desk, so I sent him a link to the MacBook Air. SPS meeting was postponed because Greg was unexpectedly out. WCWG meeting: Eric gave updates on technical infrastructure, I demoed new content inserted and styled, everyone reviewed and discussed people profile pages and reviewed next steps. Submitted an email resource account for student LL. Calendar management. Followup with Rebecca B and Amy C about a website request. Lots of content and styling work in Drupal all day. Lunch: ate various foods from this morning's feast. Content and styling work in Drupal. Quick snack from Panda Express: two veggie spring rolls, no sauce. Rode Muni 43 then 66 home. Dinner at home: leftover mushroom pizza, carrot ginger soup from a box. Uploaded photos to Flickr and Facebook. Submitted a support request to CrashPlan because I wasn't sure how to interpret last completed = 45 days for one of our computers.
Fri Nov 15, 2013
Breakfast at home: 2 eggs in 2 biscuits from a can, hot water. Rode Muni to UCSF Laurel Heights. Lots of email followup on various issues. Content staging and styling and issue queue review in Drupal. Met with David J to discuss pharmchem research staged pages for chembio and proteineng. Did a lot of cleaning of bookmarks. Lunch at JCC: build your own bowl: tofu, brown rice, fried kale, thai peanut sauce; about $10. How did I not see this menu item before? A few minor problems: I found some dried rice grains, and the kale was partially burnt. I did not complain because I didn't have the time to do so. Long conference call with Susie, Eric, and David. Worked late: content staging and asana ticket review. Dinner at home: Patrick made carribean curry with tofu and cashew, steamed rice. We didn't eat together. I arrived home later than expected, and he was already sleeping. I encountered error "could not activate cellular data network" and a web page called "iPhone: Troubleshooting a cellular data connection" I thought step 4 fixed it (remove the sim card and reinsert it) but two days later I had the problem again, so step 4 did not fix it. Late snack: vegetable potstickers from frozen with dipping sauce. Read more of the Lumix G6 manual, figured out how to turn on the electronic shutter setting so that the mechanical shutter was disabled. This makes the camera completely silent when taking a photo.
Sat Nov 16, 2013
Laundry. Mailed a thank you card. Archived documents. Edited and uploaded old photos from Asia (2010) and Europe (2012) trips and other photos to Flickr. Breakfast at home: 3 hash browns, 2 eggs fried, 1 pear, hot water. Patrick made us coffee with the Bialetti. House chores: depilling a comforter with a depilling machine, vacuuming. Watched part of The Devil Wears Prada on Netflix DVD with Patrick.
Sun Nov 17, 2013
Breakfast: a slice of TJ's chocolate ganache danish pastry, coffee from Bialetti. Lunch: leftovers from last night's dinner. Encountered error "could not activate cellular data network" again. This time I reset network settings. This did not fix it. I backed up then erased all content and settings (following the instructions in KB HT4137). I restored from the most recent backup using iTunes. That took hours and my day was wasted waiting for it to finish. That did not resolve the problem. I finally resolved it by removing and installing APN settings for Straight Talk. It seems that there were old settings and now there are new settings (as of perhaps summer 2013). Recently I had received a mysterious text message that said to turn my phone off then on again to receive the new settings, but after doing so my phone still did not work correctly. Solution: I installed the new APN settings from www.unlockit.co.nz and this resolved the problem with error "could not activate cellular data network." Finished watching The Devil Wears Prada on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Watched assorted videos on Vimeo and YouTube. Recharge Spa work: restarted work on the new website.
Mon Nov 18, 2013
Rode my bike to UCSF Laurel Heights. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Corrected the student leadership photo sheet for Joe C. Content and styling work in Drupal. Lunch with Sara G and Paula J at Garibaldi's, my first time to this restaurant, which was Paula's idea, I think. Followup with Todd W about expected delivery dates of an order. Listserv management. Small web edit for Joel: admissions deadline will now always be November 1. asana ticket followup. Content and styling work in Drupal. Dinner alone in my office: leftovers. Worked late. Rode my bike home. Exhausted. To bed.

UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Reorganized apps on my iPhone. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: he prepared vegetable biryani from frozen. I had leftover Paxti's pizza. We shared a bottle of chardonnay. Shopped online for gifts. Tried and failed connecting my Lumix G6 camera to my computer via wifi, still haven't figured out how to remove the movie clips from the smartcard. They're stored in some kind of QuickTime bundle. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Reorganized apps on my iPhone. Wrote and shared this fun bit of nonsense on psychobauble's Facebook wall in response to his excitement of forthcoming peppermint bark: "For centuries people have celebrated the arrival of peppermint bark at the beginning of each hibernal ecological season as peppermint trees shed their leaves and their candy-cane-encrusted chocolate bark falls naturally and gently to the forest floor to be gathered and sold by artisanal harvesters employed by Williams-Sonoma, Starbucks, Macy's, Cost Plus World Market, Safeway, and other beloved multinational corporations. Yes, the time is now." My Peak Design order arrived today but I'm waiting to unbox; must take photos of the exquisite packaging in daylight first. I ordered it on Sunday at 5:48 PM and did not expect it to arrive in 2 days since their website said it was backordered through October and then switched to saying backordered through November.
Wed Nov 20, 2013
Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. Breakfast burrito at Carmelina's, sat in the dining area watching a strike take place on Parnassus Avenue. Meeting with Joe G, Susie, and Eric; it went well. Spent most of today prepping a new update from the dean for Susie. Also prepped an updated conference schedule for student GL and uploaded a CAPSLEAD document for Cindy. Lunch at Beautifull! Recently I installed an iPhone app called Decibels db that measures sound levels. For Beautifull! the average decibels was measured at 70 db. Patrick picked me up from UCSF Laurel Heights. We had a very difficult time finding street parking in the Mission. We happened upon and parked at Mission Bartlett Garage. Neither of us had encountered or used this garage before. Dinner at Mau with Patrick, Drew, Danny, Romy. (Phil was visiting his mom.) 81 decibels. Service was very good except someone nearly removed a plate that Danny wanted to keep. Meal was relatively inexpensive; $24 per person. Parking garage fee: $4 per hour for 2 hours = $8.
Thu Nov 21, 2013
Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. While boarding at the rear door on bus 6 at 9th and Kirkham at 7:57 AM, the door closed on my hand and would not open when I pressed the button to open the door. People inside the bus saw me but none asked the driver to stop as he pulled away. So frustrating. Breakfast at Palio: egg and cheese wrap, coffee with half and half. Shot some photos. Chatted with Mari G on the phone about Drupal. Met with Susie and Paula to review update from the dean and link styling and behavior. Forgot to eat lunch. Chatted briefly with Lisa about the procedure to submit a surplus pickup request. The OSACA recently purchased a new microwave because the old one was making strange noises. I can't recall if this microwave was the one from our Med Sci move-in in 2004 or if we replaced it once since then. Took 90 minutes to get home. From Forest Hill I took a K train to West Portal so that I would have cellular service sooner. A few minutes later I looked up from my phone and remembered that I was on K instead of an L train and forgot to alight at West Portal. I walked the entire length of West Portal and missed the L by a minute, waited 20 minutes for the next train. Dinner at home: Patrick had ordered Thai food delivery from a place in West Portal. Exhausted, to bed earlyish, but stayed awake watching various things on my iPad on Netflix instant watch: half of Samsara, short TED Talks, all of Anjelah Johnson-Reyes's That's How We Do It. Tonight's highlight: in the white elephant gift exchange Alex unknowingly selected and took home the Playstation 1 that Johnson received in our last white elephant party.
