Late lunch from Subway: 6-inch veggie delight on italian with provolone, water from my klean kanteen. Ate in the sun on the sidewalk. Chatted briefly with John M who happened to walk by. Did some testing of the main display in the IRC, could not get it to work properly. Chatted with Frances, Cathi, and Monica about the IRC. Followup with Joel and the OSACA about new voicemail and how confusing it is because the new voicemail number 415-476-1111 is similar to but not the same as the old voicemail number 415-476-6111. Also it's confusing that the old system does not receive new messages after setting an extended absence greeting but the new system does and in neither system can you change that behavior. Followup with Susie and Eric about orientation photoshoot availability. Jazzee work and followup. Management activities. Followup with Susie and Eric about privacy policy. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: cucumber sandwich for him, leftovers for me. Cocktails: junior mint milkshake (rumple minze, creme de cacao, milk, ice). Scanned and edited images and sent them to Jeanne. Chatted briefly on Facebook with Travis. Why does Apple Image Capture 6.2 (451) let you select TIFF as your file type and also the checkbox for "Combine into a single document" as the same time? I opened the resulting TIFF before realizing that only the last image I scanned was available. (They were not brought in on multiple layers.) Frustrating. Turns out that Photoshop CS as of September 2011 does not support multipage TIFF. I rescanned my images.

We waited about 15 or 20 minutes before a space large enough for us opened. Some dishes were spicier than expected, and there was some dish switching. Drove home.

patrick drove me to sfo. security. long line at il fornaio. i returned to firewood grill at 7:50 am because i wanted something closer to table service. they didn't open until 8:00. while waiting at a table i was surprised to learn that sfo wifi was not free. i had thought it was free. waited in line at the register for 10 minutes. i ordered a veggie scramble. she said it comes with bacon. (weird.) i said okay because i haven't had bacon by itself in a very long time. (everything in moderation, including moderation, right?) when my food arrived i was disappointed to have been given plasticware instead of silverware, but i guess silverware isn't permitted anywhere inside the security zone. I was impressed by the JetBlue flight—my first time flying JetBlue. Efficient beverage and snack service, particularly for a short flight (75 minutes). Staff was friendly, seats comfortable. For the snack it was our choice of chips or cookies. At the end of the flight passengers were permitted to alight from the front and rear of the plane. I was also impressed with Long Beach Airport, also my first time. Part of it has open-air facilities, making it feel a little like Honolulu to me. So much nicer than LAX. Immediately after picking me up we went grocery shopping at 99 Ranch Market then returned home to mom and dad's, driving past a home in which my grandmother once lived as well as some apartment properties that my mom and dad still own. Late lunch: assorted dim sum and deli items from 99. Long nap. When I awoke some 5 or so hours later, Dex and Lani had arrived by car. (Lani drove.) Late dinner at home. We realized that it had been about 20 years since we all dined together in this house. Afterwards I did some optimization on Dad's computer and inspected his wifi configuration. New in the past few months he purchased and installed a FreedomPop device. The box claims to deliver 4G speeds, but a speed test I ran found 184 Kbps down and 1158 Kbps up—poor, but better than the dialup connection they had before. He says he paid a one-time $80 fee for the device, then $20 per month for 10 GB. We talked about Gmail. (He's still using Juno.) We talked about iPad and I showed him how to use mine.
Fri Jul 5, 2013
At mom and dad's. I had a weird dream last night involving a car show (or possibly some other kind of event), my BMW 318ti, auto parts theft, a restaurant, malfunctioning presentation software, unusual urination facilities. Breakfast: I ate one-year-old organic granola with sweetened soy milk, ginseng tea, grapes, a small bite of papaya. (I requested tea and was served ginseng tea.) Others ate raisin dinner rolls, custard buns, grapes, and papaya. Memorial service for grandmother, reception afterwards at Uncle James's house, then the cousins split off and went to Champion Food at Arbor Center for boba tea. I tried for the first time taiwanese shave ice. We all had dinner at Veggie Grill at Spectrum Center with Auntie Lily.
Sat Jul 6, 2013
At mom and dad's. Breakfast at home. Dex and Lani drove home. Computer maintenance. Lunch at home. dinner at home. mom, dad, and i went to downtown disney to see the fireworks. a good place to watch is outside La Brea Bakery, especially if you get a seat on the edge of the magic fountain. Afterwards we ate at Yogurtland in Orangefair Marketplace (next to China Buffet).
Sun Jul 7, 2013
At mom and dad's. slept in. brunch at home: two eggs scrambled with chives, garlic leaves, and leftover rice. computer instruction and maintenance. nap. dinner with mom and dad at downtown disney tortilla jo's. afterwards we walked at anaheim gardenwalk, mom bought a few things at Lush. GardenWalk seems to be a mostly unsuccessful shopping mall, but it wasn't clear to me why.
Mon Jul 8, 2013
At mom and dad's. Breakfast at home: two eggs scrambled with chives, garlic leaves, and leftover rice. I accompanied Dad to Fry's where he looked at a few things but didn't buy anything. Brunch at China Buffet. They drove me to Long Beach airport, which they say is about the same distance from them as John Wayne Airport aka Santa Ana Airport aka Orange County Airport aka The Airport That Has Too Many Names. I had fries and an iced tea at a burger place with the McKenna's name attached: $13.58. It took a long time for my order to come through, especially for being just fries. I should have eaten at one of the other places with table service so I wouldn't have had to stand for 15 minutes. The kitchen staff was handling a problematic order and seemed like it could improve a bit in customer service. It's confusing that where you order there is no cash register, but the way I think it works is you place your order then move a fair distance to the right to pay. LGB to SFO via jetBlue. Patrick picked me up at the airport. Home. Unpacked. Dinner at home with Patrick: sweet potato and corn soup.

The dish should be called garlic prawns penne pasta saute instead. On my way out the door at closing time I was offered and I accepted a free walnut baguette. So nice! Rode my bike home. After agreeing to take a web survey on bestbuy.com, I submitted this feedback: "Many fonts are too small, especially for older audiences. (Did you test with any of them?) Please make the smallest fonts a little larger by default. The image you show for the Samsung EX2 is misleading—two components shown in the image are optional and not included in the price displayed. This is specified in the Q&A but to me is false advertising and makes me feel Best Buy is untrustworthy in general. If you're misleading people about this item, how many other items are the same way? For cameras you need more than one photo. See camera review sites—they show cameras from all angles. Your site worked well for me on this visit, but it is visually and interactively dull. To improve, I recommend Aarron Walter's Designing for Emotion. For sites with richer graphics and better user interaction and experience, check out the works by thisbythem.com" Read the entirety of the This By Them blog, bookmarked a few cool things in Delicious.

Breakfast: two eggs scrambled with grilled mushrooms and green onions; spelt toast; two hash browns; sliced banana; hot water. Lots of folding and ironing from yesterday's laundry wash. Cut my hair, showered. Camera purchase research. Decided, finally, to not buy the Samsung EX2F and to wait one month when a successor to the Nikon Coolpix P7700 should become available. I eliminated the Benq G1 because Benq has no history of being serious in the market segment it just entered with the G1 and because reports that the image quality was not as good as its competitors. I eliminated the Canon PowerShot G1 X because it's notably larger than my current camera and because it's not suitable for macro shots closer than 20 centimeters. I had previously eliminated the Samsung EX2F due to no orientation sensor, but I put it back on my shortlist because it was still closer to what I wanted than anything else. However, it has unreliable JPEG quality, and although I could shoot RAW+JPEG its RAW files are unacceptably large at about 30 MB each. I don't have time for that. The Nikon Coolpix P7700 is only a hair larger than my current camera but is 7 years newer and takes better quality images and also has the full swivel screen, which I eventually decided was a requirement for me. (I would not be happy with a screen that only tilts.) If Samsung resolved the JPEG problem I'd prefer the successor to the EX2F, but I'm thinking I'll end up with the successor to the P7700 because Samsung is unlikely to release a successor to the EX2F before September 2013. Dinner at home with Patrick: large salad with boiled egg, sliced mushrooms, diced green bell pepper, and sliced avocado. Watched part of Ip Man (2008) on Netflix instant watch with Patrick and popcorn. Late meal: leftover food from Bombay Indian.

Linkchecking, kiosk work. Followup with Kevin S about ISIS. Followup on a lot of web redesign asana tickets. Followup with Ian G about telephone issues. Began some new documentation in the SOP IT wiki about CASHNet. I can't remember what I had for lunch today. UC proposed IT accessibility meeting via webconf with Stephen L. Jazzee work. Late dinner at Artesano, a new restaurant in Laurel Village promising authentic South American flavors. They opened on July 12. I enjoy seeing a restaurant in its opening week. Ordering food is awkward because the large board menu prominent at the entrance makes it seem as though you order and pay then seat yourself and they deliver your food. However, after I spent several minutes deciding what to eat, when I ordered I was asked if I wanted for here or to go and I said for here. Then I was offered a seat and a menu. I accepted the seat but refused the menu (because by then I knew what I wanted) and placed my order. Several minutes later someone else attempted to take my order, then was stopped by the person who took my order, then he retook my order (just in case?). Awkward. I'd prefer if they chose one model over the other instead of leaving it ambiguous. I sat next to the fireplace which was likely much too hot for most people (but I did anyway). A pretty pot of flowers in front of me had wilted on the side closer to the fireplace. While waiting I was offered a very large jicama salad at no charge which I politely refused because it was too much to eat. It was unclear to me whether this was complimentary due to opening week or a kitchen error being turned into good. My order took a long time to come out, but props to the deliverator who apologized sincerely for the delay. (I find it common for deliverators to say nothing at all when this happens, so when an apology is given it's special, unfortunately.) My food had arrived, but I still had not received the beverage I had ordered: hot water. When I got the attention of a staff member, I changed my order to water no ice since the fireplace was so hot. Finally received my water. For the remainder of my meal staff seemed to behave as though it was a full service restaurant - awkward. The food was tasty. I ate a grilled fish sandwich with french fries and water. The kind of fish was unspecified, and I forgot to ask, but there's a lot of yellowtail elsewhere on the menu so that would be my guess. The sandwich included a pineapple salsa which was tasty, but the sandwich also had a strong French mustard flavor that overpowered all the other flavors. It was served on a ciabatta roll. The fries were perfectly crisp and flavorful and surprisingly long. $16.23 after a $1 tip. The price for this meal seems a little high compared to all of San Francisco and because, hey, it's just a fish sandwich and fries, but this is Laurel Heights where nearly all the other good dining options are annoyingly clustered at the high end, so they can probably get away with prices higher than the SF average. The front-of-house staff seems very eager to please but is not yet seasoned enough to provide more than average service. I saw one table go unwiped before new customers sat and wiped it themselves with new napkins from the dispenser on the table. Nonetheless, Artesano shows promise and will likely draw customers due to the area's thin dining options if not for the quality of the food and service. Interesting note: From the takeout menu Artesano appears to be a sister restaurant of nearby, successful Rigolo. Rode my bike home.

Since spring 2000, the largest piece of luggage I have owned is a soft-shell carry-on which I purchased through Rick Steves' website. Recently I have noticed that when I use it backpack-style I later discover reddish marks along my shoulders, so I decided to purchase luggage with wheels. Stopped at work to drop off batteries to recycle, apply Goo Gone to gooey things on my desk and door, wipe up foodstuff splattered on my walls from before I moved in, fill my Contigo water bottle, and pick up my bicycle and helmet. Dropped the bike off at the bike shop; need new brakes: $63. Home. Edited and uploaded photos. Edited photos. Picked up the bike. Washed the front door entryway of mold. Snack: popcorn with salt. Edited photos. Finally finished editing photos from Filoli. Dinner at Destino with Patrick. We used a $25 restaurant.com coupon which required us to spend $50 before we could use it. Slept through my alarm. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with fresh, diced cripps pink apple; cinnamon; almond milk. Left for work late. Took Muni L train, thinking that I'd missed the rush hour crowd. First train that arrives passes with OUT OF SERVICE displayed. I walk to 19th Avenue and wait for bus 28. Bus arrives, I board. At about Kirkham, the bus traveling at about 30 miles per hour demolishes the rear-view mirror of a truck parked a little too far out into the lane. The bus stops. After about a minute, I get out and walk to Judah. I wait for an N train. N arrives. I ride it to UCSF. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. My commute this morning: about 90 minutes. On the way I'm testing browser issues on my iPhone and notice a problem with the School of Pharmacy website. I send email to Eric to see if he can reproduce the problem while I'm seven minutes away from getting in to the office. I get in the office and Eric is fixing the problem. We discover that servint accidentally executed our CentOS upgrade last night instead of August 13 as we had previously agreed with them. Some sites are broken. We put out fires. I send communications. It's a mess. Jazzee work. Rodney stopped by. Our sprint end meeting was canceled at the last minute. I chatted with Rodney about various issues. Jazzee work. Late lunch by myself at Beautifull: salmon stew over golden quinoa, caesar kale, water. Jazzee work. Worked late. Observed three Muni 1 buses in a row stopped at California and Presidio. Rode Muni 43 to 9th and Judah. Late dinner at Nan King Road Bistro. Rode Muni bus 66 home. Jazzee work.
