Drupalcon. The main point of Karen McGrane's keynote to me seemed to be that constructions like wysiwyg editors and in-place editing are dangerous because they enable content creators to think of content as though they were print publications. This is an incorrect frame of thinking because web content needs to work well on different devices and contexts and wysiwyg and in-place editing provides perceptions that lead to a very narrow view of how that content will be used. Yes, you can introduce additional steps in the workflow to give the content author a better idea of all the ways the content will be used, but it remains to be seen whether that is a successful strategy on a large scale. Karen didn't say to never use wysiwyg editors or to never use in-place editing. She's encouraging us to be aware that they might not solve our problem and to proceed with this awareness. Walked in the rain with Eric to meet Katie M and Scott E for dinner at Olympic Provisions. Scott biked home in the rain, Katie gave Eric and me a lift to the hotel.
