Waited about 45 minutes to be seated for brunch at Universal Cafe with Drew, Danny, Phil, Romy, Peter, Wayne. Drew and I each had the house sourdough english muffin with fried egg, bacon, mushrooms, sweet pepper relish, and yellow cheddar ($14.50). Danny had the apple-raspberry crisp with vanilla gelato ($10). Peter had the local shellfish burger on ciabatta with caper aioli, bread and butter pickled green tomato, avocado, butter leaf lettuce, and a side of taro chips ($16). Phil had the moroccan-style chicken meatballs on house pita with carrot-herb salad, almond, pickled sultana, and fresh mozzarella ($16). Romy had soft scrambled eggs with roasted cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, basil pesto and a side of toast with lettuces and a side of maple-sage sausage ($14 and $6). Wayne had the detox bowl: summer greens, beets, eggplant-sesame puree, rose kokuho brown rice, poached egg, green tahini ($14.50). Afterwards Phil and Danny returned home and the rest of us attended Folsom Street Fair. The day was hot—probably the hottest day of the year so far—making it nearly unbearable to be in the sun for long. We stopped for a drink at Lone Star where the patio was full so we sat unentertained in the dark next to the pool table. At least they had ceiling fans going at full speed if not air conditioning. Later we walked to Cease and Desist, my first time to this restaurant which took over the space formerly held by Specchio. Back to Shotwell House where I napped for a while before riding Uber Pool home.
