Mon Aug 1, 2016

Breakfast at Breka: hot breakfast croissant sandwich, mocha, water. Rode a taxi (about 20 CAD) to Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park. Visited the conservatory, which I loved. Afterwards I visited the rose garden, then stopped for a bite at the restaurant next to the conservatory called Seasons in the Park (604-874-8008). Santa Cristina chianti (9 oz, $15), duck confit pizza ($21), bread and butter, water, tiramisu with gooseberry ($9.50). Seasons in the Park has a terrifically panoramic view of downtown Vancouver. The food is excellent. Service by Philip was very good; I highly recommend it. $49.28 after tax and GST but before tip. Afterwards I visited the large quarry then small quarry—both beautiful. I had intended to visit Bloedel Conservatory and the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens but found I didn't have energy for both. I found a taxi home at the non-fountain entrance to the conservatory and rode it back to the hotel where I rested. Awoke, showered. Went out. Ran into Oth in a crosswalk, said hello, met Melvin. Davie Street seemed mostly dead with the exception of Pumpjack. After browsing the bars somewhat I had a drink at The Junction where some kind of quiz game was just ending. On the return to the hotel I purchased an order of baklava to go at Stepho's, then ate a third of it and leftover pizza in my room. To bed.

Tue Aug 2, 2016

Breakfast: leftover baklava, water. Packed, checked out of my room and left two bags with the front desk. Visited Vancouver Art Gallery, which was mostly disappointing. Picasso: The Artist and His Muses, Mashup: The Birth of Modern Culture, Harry Callahan, Bharti Kher, I Had an Interesting French Artist To See Me This Summer. When I emerged I discovered that a light rain had begun to fall. The rest of the day provided cool and intermittent light showers. Got a bite to eat at Faubourg: hot roast beef sandwich, cauliflower soup, coffee with milk, water. Wandered around, ending up at the public library where I browsed before napping briefly in a chair. Returned to the hotel, got another small bite to eat at the hotel restaurant: chicken strips and fries with ketchup and honey mustard, red wine. Retrieved my bags from the hotel, rode SkyTrain from Yaletown-Roundhouse to YVR. Arrived over two hours in advance of the flight time; short lines, and customs was easy.

Wed Aug 3, 2016

Lunch at AG Ferrari: verdure sampler: beets, kale salad, pesto cavatappi. Dessert: one Bacio Perugina. About $10. My love note: Launch your heart before you and run after it. (Arab proverb). I liked the Baci Perugina so much I bought six more before realizing they were a dollar each. Repaired cable management that had failed underneath my desk. Updated the phone number cheat sheet. Reviewed and gave feedback on a Sway presentation for SM. Followup with Eric G and John K about retiring pub.ucsf.edu for security reasons. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Blue Apron fresh basil fettuccine with sauteed cherry tomatoes and zucchini, red wine. Dessert: two Baci Perugina each. My love notes: (1) Love is a storm of pleasure and an enchantment of sweetness. (2) Love me when I deserve it least, as that is when I'll need it most. With Patrick, I reviewed photos from my trip and watched the Daily Hive video of the Disney fireworks at Honda Celebration of Light 2016.

Sun Aug 7, 2016

Breakfast at home: leftover frittata, one pink lady apple, earl gray tea. Phil, Drew, and Paul picked me up. We drove to Cavallo Point and brunched at Murray Circle: warm pistachios to start, chicken confit hash for both me and Phil, eggs benedict for Paul, smoked salmon omelette for Drew. Everyone insisted I had been to Cavallo Point with them before, but I insisted I had not. Afterwards we visited the small and unnoteworthy Ansel Adams exhibit in the gallery and briefly visited the church building up the hill. We drove thru Sausalito but did not stop. Pit stop at Recharge Medical. We drove to North Beach. Drew wanted to try whiskey gelato at Naia Gelateria; the alcohol flavoring was not very strong—disappointing. We walked in North Beach stopping briefly at Al's Attire and at Barbary Coast which has taken the space that I remembered Bocce Cafe once held. We visited a home sale open house at 422 green. We got drinks and a brunch platter to share at 15 Romolo. Paul and I got rides home. Rested. Edited, uploaded, and titled Vancouver BC photos. Tried making a movie in iMovie 10.1.1 but realized that I no longer knew how it worked. I tried using help in the application but failed even in trimming a single clip. Gave up for now. Dinner at home with Patrick: Green Chef penne all'arrabbiata with arugula-fennel salad and garlic-parsley artichokes, red wine. Finished watching The Little Prince (2015) on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. I liked everything about the film except the story which I found confused and disjointed, delving into philosophical, moral, and coming of age themes without making any sense of any one theme. I had never read the book; maybe the book makes more sense. Performed some journal surgery, reconstructing the China trip from notes I had taken in Simplenote.

Mon Aug 8, 2016

Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Notified listserv users about an expired SSL security certificate. Followup: Wang Lab, OEIS people. Chatted with Joel about the guest account. Errand: post office to return unwanted clothes from my recent Scotch & Soda order. Lunch at Buzz: burger with cheddar on kaiser roll, side of onion rings, water: $12.18—inexpensive for the quality. Food is very good but I don't like that they toast the top side of the top bun. It's wrapped in paper for easier eating, so I guess that doesn't matter. Still, it's the principle somehow. Service is awkward but somewhat forgivable (e.g., person at the register stops reading a book in order to provide service). It seems they ought to have one more person on staff; it seems that the person at the register must leave her position in order to make smoothies. Finished editing the Giacomini draft. Followup with a student's legal name change. Followup with Richie on an A-Z List request that is still unresolved. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Along the way I continued studying Spanish on Duolingo. Rode Muni home. Dessert for me: one perugina baci. My love note: Day by day and night by night we were together - all else has been forgotten by me. [Walt Whitman] Dessert again with Patrick: two small chocolate-chocolate chip cookies each, milk for Patrick, sparkling water for me. Documented clothing tags from my recent Scotch & Soda order.

Put into service new door draft stoppers from Peter at The Marine Sales Company—perfect fit and they smell terrific. Put into service two Tarriss TSA luggage locks. They were easy to set the code. I had a brioche breakfast sandwich with deep-fried breakfast potatoes with a cappuccino and water. We visited the Civic Center farmer's market, then Danny left for home. I wandered, visiting Hayes Valley, stopping for coffee at Ritual, then continuing to Jefferson Square Park. Later I met Emery at the Eagle Beer Bust. I had anticipated meeting Christine, who I had met on Friday night, but I learned that our schedules had become staggered. The beer bust was a benefit for Folsom Street Events. We ate: Local Motion roll (salmon, hamachi, shiromi, seared albacore, shiso leaf); The Rock (thinly sliced Wagyu beef coulotte cooked tableside on a sizzling Japanese river stone with trio of sauces: spicy korean, kizami carrot sauce, and cilantro puree); scallop yaki (grilled sweet corn, Hokkaido scallops, blistered shishito pepper mayo, baby arugula); misoyaki black cod (purple yam dumplings, edamame, baby shitake mushrooms, ginger dashi broth); crispy skin 38 north duck breast (red rice, grilled artichokes, pickled celery, barigoule vinaigrette). They were out of the first choice of wine Paul had selected, then the second as well, and we ended up having a 2012 Napa Valley Girard sauvignon blanc. Service was excellent. Paul had been before but neither Phil nor Danny had. Afterwards we walked to the Warfield for Culture Club presented by Goldenvoice with opening by GROVES. Phil had found tickets on Goldstar. Doors opened at 7:00 pm for this all-ages show. We arrived at about 8:00 pm after waiting in a 10-minute line for will call tickets. We sat in reserved lower balcony 5, row D, seats 21, 23, 25, and 27. We heard GROVES play three songs. For the last one, the band introduced guest guitarist Jerry Harrison from the Talking Heads. Boy George sang lead while they played "Psycho Killer." Culture Club's performance started around 9 pm and had lots of lights—including strobes—that pointed into the audience, sometimes for long minutes, which I found kind of annoying. But hearing them play many old favorites more or less as we remembered them put a smile on everyone's faces. Setlist: Church of the Poison Mind, It's a Miracle, I'll Tumble 4 Ya, Move Away, Everything I Own, Black Money, Time (Clock of the Heart), Like I Used To, Different Man, Miss Me Blind, The Crying Game, (a short and informal riff of Billie Jean between songs), Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, Victims, More Than Silence, The War Song. Encore: The Truth is a Runaway Train, Karma Chameleon, Bang a Gong (Get It On). Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? was the song that got everyone on their feet. Boy George wore three outfits, all variations on coat, hat, and baggyish pants. A fun evening.

This project took a long time to complete because at first I bought something similar to repair putty but it wasn't repair putty and it did not work like I had hoped it would. Then, I got the repair putty but then realized that having disposable gloves will make it significantly easier to work with. Now I have all the materials I think I need. Today's prep was sanding the surface to roughen it for better adhesion, then washing it well and waiting for it to dry.

Afterwards Danny left to run errands, and Drew, Paul, and I visited St. Peter's and Paul's Cathedral. Drew left for home. Paul and I visited the free parts of SFMOMA then rode Muni to the Castro. Drinks at Lookout where Paul's friend Doug met us. We visited Hi Tops for another drink. Paul and Doug left to go to the Persian dinner Paul had arranged at his place. I rode Lyft home. After most everyone took off, Marck, Tilman, Andy, and I walked to The Mix for more drinks, then got pizza across the street at Nizario's.
