Sat Jun 4, 2016

Slept in. Brunch: leftovers. House chores. For a pre-dinner cocktail I created on the fly a cocktail that we both think is perfect. It's two parts creme de cacao, one part whipped cream vodka, and about 5 parts black cherry soda (I used Zevia). I shook the alcohols with ice, poured the result into glasses, then topped it with the soda, then added more ice. I call it a cherry cordial cocktail. Tue Jun 7, 2016

Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. 1-on-1 with Susie. Comm team meeting. Spent most of today attempting to resolve problems caused by Yahoo! Mail changing width to min-width causing our fluid hybrid html email template to display poorly in Yahoo! Mail. Email on Acid confirmed the problem I reported in online chat, then later I found a discussion thread on Litmus that had suggestions for resolving it. I tried the suggestions, and they partly resolved the problem, but now my template was no longer responsive under certain conditions. On top of that, Yahoo! Mail seemed to have reverted some of the incorrect behavior, but I no longer had a copy of my template that worked—no versioning. Sent Angelie K a heads up about my forthcoming trip to China in case the consulate calls asking to verify my employment. Listserv management: course directors. Sun Jun 12, 2016

Not long after I awoke Patrick shared news with Tina and me about the mass shooting at the gay nightclub called Pulse in Orlando, Florida. At first Tina and I did not believe this was the largest American mass shooting. I guess we have just found ourselves desensitized enough to recurring gun violence that there seemed there have been others. I find myself in shock at this news, and yet not surprised. Breakfast at home with Tina and Patrick: toast with Marin French petite breakfast cheese and basil, fresh fruit, coffee, tisane. Relaxed at home. Tina helped me a bit in the garden. I worked on China visa applications. In the afternoon she and I drove to Fort Funston. Moments after we had arrived we found ourselves in very strong steady gusts of wind. Instructions found on the web for entering single-user mode on a Mac never seem to take into account a Mac with multiple users. For a Mac with multiple users, I believe you need to hold Command+S just after entering your login and password—not after turning on the power. Entering single-user mode and running fsck -fy resolved the problem. Notified Al B that I resolved the problem on my own and that he did not need to stop by. Began rewriting local dev env setup instructions (in the manner recommended by EFD). Began setting up local dev env on my laptop. The 24 wasn't bad, but at Castro Street Station when I arrived it said a train would arrive in 11 minutes, but it took 20 before I could board. A two-car L train passed but was too full for me to board. A second two-car L train passed but the second car was empty and did not allow passengers to board—also full. I liked the bouquets much better than the tastes. Next we attempted to visit Wild Hog Vineyards, which was a mistake. Eventually after 30 minutes of difficult driving we reached a fence, then turned around to return the way we came. Back to Whispering Surf. Rested. Wayne and Peter arrived, then later still Richard arrived. Dinner: Phil prepared raw and baked oysters, manila clams with baby bok choy, steamed rice. Dessert: cheesecake, chocolate cake. Dinner at home with Patrick: tikka masala with tofu, potato, and broccolini over jasmine rice. Dessert: two small chocolate chip cookies each from frozen. Began repairs on the AMDM Inc. Intelliseat IBS-200. The problem is that the soft close feature stopped working; the toilet seat would instead fall quickly, making a loud clunk noise. The underside of toilet seat says to not disassemble the seat. I ignored this warning. The user manual that came with it is not a repair manual, so it was of little use except to tell me about the unit separation button. Pressing this button enables the seat to pull forward from the toilet and tank. I unplugged the unit from AC power. I removed the two screws at the back using a small phillips head screwdriver. I carefully turned the unit over then inserted a large flat head screwdriver into two slots near the seat's inner rim and carefully separated the top portion from the lower portion. Inside, wires connect pieces attached to both portions, so you must perform this step carefully so that the top and bottom portions are not separated too far to cause the wires to break. Patrick helped me take photos of the wires before I disconnected them so that I can refer to the photo if needed during reassembly. I removed two more screws attaching one hinge mechanism to the toilet seat, and here is where I discovered the problem: the plastic had broken around this joint. I successfully used super glue to fix this. During reassembly I discovered that the other hinge mechanism had issues as well. The plastic surrounding the mount had cracked in one location and had broken off a piece in another. To repair this, something that might work is epoxy putty, which I do not have. I shopped online and decided upon Loctite Repair Putty General Purpose because it was the highest rated and also the cheapest. Amazon has a distant estimated delivery date, so I'll try to find this in a local hardware store instead. For now, we can use the toilet and toilet seat without the seat lid.

China trip planning: tried on new purchases: a new hat for protection from sun and rain, a new lightweight jacket suitable for light rain. The hat was too big and I was about to return it when I remembered there is an adjustable cord that made it fit pretty well. The size small jacket is too big, but they don't make a men's extra small, and the boys version seems to be sized similarly and has fewer and less appealing color choices.
