Wed Jul 1, 2015

Breakfast at home: granola with fresh, diced plum; goat yogurt; unsweetened soy milk. Side of raspberries. Confirmed that I do not enjoy goat yogurt; it slightly makes me want to vomit. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Encountered a problem with blank body fields on pharm, filed it in asana. Sprint standup. Jazzee work: completed testing. Microsites: pkcourse followup. Spent most of the day prepping and executing listserv rotations. Office celebration: Susie baked a four-layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. We also had three kinds of ice cream (vanilla, mint chip, and chocolate) and a side of strawberries. No lunch. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. It was tasty, but we couldn't taste the pineapple. Dessert from Sheng Kee Bakery: two chocolate cream puffs each, slice of two-layer chocolate and vanilla sponge cake with vanilla buttercream.

Fri Jul 3, 2015

UCSF holiday. Recharge Spa web work: issue followup, made a change to payment policies live. Discovered a solution to the problem in which rules fail to work in Apple Mail in OS 10.10.3 Yosemite: in Mail preferences, select Rules, then for each rule, open the rule, then select OK to save it. If no error occurs, there was no problem with that rule. However, the following error might appear: "A destination mailbox has not been selected for the Move/Copy action. Select a mailbox or remove the action." If so, the rule has somehow lost its destination mailbox. Reselect the mailbox. Done. Pre-breakfast: a tangerine. Breakfast: granola with unsweetened soy milk. More Recharge Spa web work. Errand: gasoline, air for tires, bought large Casabella Waterblock gloves at Bed Bath and Beyond in Daly City for $7 each. Met Patrick at his mom's. We tried lunching at Starbelly, but there was a long line just to see the host and it didn't look like it was moving, so we left and ate at Super Duper instead. We shared one Super Duper with cheese, one Mini, one order of fries. Patrick had a chocolate shake. I had lemonade. Errands with Patrick: Walgreens. We visited his mom, still recovering from her hospital visit. We drove home.

Sat Jul 4, 2015

Breakfast: granola with fresh raspberries and unsweetened soy milk. Installed iOS 8.4 on my iPhone 6 Plus. Tried VSCO Cam for iPhone but it was so minimalist that using it was too frustrating to be worthwhile. I couldn't remember what all the different icons meant. I couldn't figure out how to go back to where I was before. Delete. Troubleshot a CrashPlan problem. Nap. America Day Party at Shotwell House with Danny, Romy, Drew, Phil, Jane, Richard, Chris, Cricket. Burgers, salad, watermelon. Richard cooked a cake decorated like an American flag. We talked about new jersey, double parkers, home security cameras, indian motorcycles, johnny mathis, american songwriters, eddie izzard, citizenship, hoarding vs collecting, uniqlo-disney tshirts, sup iphone cases, skin care, plant pests, local crime, fireworks, landlords and tenants, pregnancy leave, beverage nostalgia, Jean Danflou La Prisonniere Apple Brandy, windsor. Drove home. Backed up Corinna's website. Late meal: leftover burger.

Sun Jul 5, 2015

Breakfast at home: granola with fresh, diced pink lady apple and unsweetened soy milk; water. Finished playing The Room for iOS. I was frequently unable to figure out the puzzles, but the hint system worked well, giving me enough info to continue but not so much to make me dumb or to give away the game play. The boxes are both a delight and a frustration in a fun way. In some respects it's similar to Monument Valley but more faux mechanical design than faux mathematical design. In Mac OS 10.10.3 Yosemite in Image Capture 6.6 if deleting photos does not work as expected (does nothing), quit and restart Image Capture then try again. This resolved the problem for me in which Image Capture would display a dialog with "Deleting..." but does not delete the files within the expected amount of time. (It would do nothing except display that message.) The problem was consistently reproducible until the application was restarted. Rode Muni to Embarcadero Station. Rode BART to MacArthur Station. Could not figure out where the Emery Go Round shuttle stop was without asking a station attendant. I could find no signage at all. Waited 20 minutes for an Emery Go Round shuttle but it did not appear and the NextBus times were not consistent. Started walking to IKEA and along the way I saw the Emery Go Round shuttle going in the opposite direction, so at least I knew it existed. I walked to 40th and San Pablo where I caught the Emery Go Round shuttle and rode that to Shellmound and Bay Streets to visit IKEA. Door to door from my home in the middle of the Sunset was 2 hours 11 minutes. (This is partly why people still drive.) I went to IKEA to buy a specific item. I had checked online beforehand that they had the item in stock—lots of green dots indicating plenty in stock. When I arrived I wanted a refreshment and got in line at the cafe by the registers but the line was not moving. After several minutes I abandoned it. It took me about 20 minutes to find the item's location. Along the way I passed the cafeteria, and it was the same as the cafe downstairs; a very long line that wasn't moving. IKEA was all out of the item I wanted. I sought help from a salesperson who did some checking but after several minutes apologized and said that it must have been an inventory error and that there are no more of them anywhere at this location. No further offer to remedy the situation (e.g., let me help you find the item at one of our other stores) even after I told him it took me over two hours to get there. I instead bought a similar item that isn't going to work as well. I paid for my goods and left. I vow to never shop at IKEA again. On the sidewalk to the bus stop a small black child on a small, noisy motorbike drove right up to my feet forcing me to walk around him while he gave me an evil stare. There was plenty of space for him to go around me, but he chose to make a point of making me step around him. Who raises children to do this? Rode the Emery Go Round back to MacArthur BART Station. Rode BART to Embarcadero Station. Rode Muni to West Portal. The sign said another L train would be in 14 minutes, so I started walking. Five minutes later an L train passed me, and I was in between stops so I couldn't easily catch it. I walked the rest of the way home. Door to door return trip was 90 minutes. Dinner at home with Patrick: waffle fries, leftover hamburgers. Lots of home audio system surround sound research and troubleshooting in Audio Midi Setup and System Preferences for Sound. I have six speakers but only two channels appear in Audio Midi Setup. Investigation continues. In total, a reasonably awful day in which most everything I encountered upset me. Things that did work reasonably well today included the inbound Muni ride, BART, and the restrooms at IKEA. I also did a lot of healthy walking. No lunch today.

Microsites followup: Kroetz draft is in. No lunch. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Esalen pad thai noodles. Patrick followed the recipe very closely. We both agreed that the string beans should have been added at the end instead of during the stir-fry; they turned out soggy and visually well-hidden. The flavoring was delicious, not too simple, not too complex. Patrick thought the peanuts should have been roasted or toasted separately then added at the very end so that they would hold the crunch better. I didn't mind them the way they were, but I agreed his suggestion would likely be tastier. For dessert we enjoyed delicious dark chocolate pots de creme from Petit Pot. Afterwards we rode a few rollercoasters via rcdb, then we watched a few movie trailers on imdb. Troubleshot and resolved issues on Patrick's iMac: CrashPlan icon appears twice, Caffeine no longer appears, CrashPlan backup stalled. Later I saw on my own iMac that the CrashPlan icon appears twice. Late snack: tortilla chips.

Sat Jul 25, 2015

Breakfast at home by myself: one egg sunny side up, one hash brown, one sausage link, one english muffin with cream cheese. Home improvement: spackled holes in Patrick's room and the bathroom. Investigated then backed The Everyday Messenger: A Bag For Cameras & Essential Carry by Peak Design. The bag I use now is a Lowepro Passport Sling II. It works just kinda okay for my needs. I have a mirrorless camera (Panasonic Lumix G6) with the kit lens and a 45-200mm zoom lens. The bag holds these items comfortably as well as a medium or lightweight jacket and an assortment of accessory items. Despite it working for me, I have a lot of problems with this bag. It doesn't fit a lot of very common things well along with the camera and lens. A pen with a pocket clip? It sort of fits in either of the inner pockets, but not very well. A 4th-generation iPad? It just barely fits, and due to the bag's shape it fits very awkwardly. Sheets of letter-sized paper? Same thing, and you better have them in a folder or binder otherwise they will get bent out of shape. A compact umbrella? Yes, awkwardly. The zipper that expands or contracts the bag works, but the difference between the two is so comparatively little as to be negligible. There are large pockets on the outside, but I essentially never use them because I live in a big city and I ride the bus frequently and fear pickpockets. The pockets do not zip or seal, so it's very easy for someone to reach in when I'm not looking or for things to fall out if I stumble or set the back down and it falls sideways. I pulled out the Peak Design Capture that I never use and attached it to the Passport Sling II and the Capture and my camera just sagged in a very sad manner; Capture just wasn't suited for it. I've had the Passport Sling II since November 2013 and it has gotten me through, but there are lots and lots of times I was just disappointed with it despite it being the best I could find to fit my needs. Well, Lowepro, there's a new bag in town. The Kickstarter price for The Everyday Messenger is almost five times what I paid for the Passport Sling II, but I have no qualms. The Everyday Messenger will likely feel a little bigger to me, but I'm hoping not by much with a small load. No lunch. Early dinner at home by myself: broccoli, corn on the cob, one meatball from Bi-Rite deli, water. Shopped for camera lenses. Watched Dallas Buyers Club (2013) on Netflix DVD by myself with popcorn. A web page said that if you can launch it do so then change your default home page. This solution didn't work for me because I couldn't launch it.
