Thu Oct 2, 2014

Breakfast at home: Thoroughbread almond croissant. Patrick leaves today with Sam for a trip to Italy. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Calendar management. Chatted with Eric about a fish we have been trying to catch: a problem in which a page request is redirected to the home page whereas the second same request works. Content work, styling work, and asana task followup all day in Drupal. Sent reminders about new website url reviews that are still pending. Lunch at A.G. Ferrari: hot verdure sandwich (peperonata, artichoke hearts, smoked mozzarella on focaccia), water. Afterwards I had a blue bottle coffee Bar Gelato—delicious. About $12. Met with David to build pages for BTS research: therapeutic bioengineering. Rode UberX to BMW SF. Picked up the car, which Patrick had dropped off for service a few days ago. Bought gas, drove home. Used Waze for the first time but didn't follow its suggestions, sometimes by accident (turned too soon), sometimes because it didn't seem like it was suggesting good routes. Early dinner: leftover thai food. Did some testing of the new Black and Decker Flex Vac (BDH2020FLFH). I haven't used a cordless vacuum in a really long time, so it was liberating to use the Flex Vac. I found myself reaching into places for which I would otherwise have had less energy to do so pulling a larger vacuum behind me. It's pretty loud, and it has a high-pitched whine which I found somewhat annoying. The noise changes distinctly when you hold it different ways. I very nearly felt I needed earplugs when using it. The floor attachment works, just not so well as a full vacuum. It does a great job on our marble and linoleum-tiled floors, not as well on our wool-cotton rug. The crevice tool and 2-in-1 nozzle accessory both work as expected. I did not use the pet hair tool. (No pets.) The vacuum is heavier than I had hoped, remembering the light weight of the original DustBuster, but it's clearly more powerful and versatile than a DustBuster. The wrap-around tube and nozzle is a bit awkward to reattach. It just takes a little practice to understand how it works. The instruction booklet is simply awful—a great example of poor communications. Hardly anyone reads two pages of safety warnings in small type, diagrams are far too small, some of the instructions don't work (e.g., removing and refitting the handle), and the instructions aren't written with the customer in mind (e.g., the instructions should first say how to charge the device because one wants to use it right away but it can't be used until it has charged for four hours). Archived documents. Late meal: more thai leftovers, water.

Fri Oct 3, 2014

Breakfast at home: oatmeal with fresh, diced sweetango apple; pumpkin pie spice; unsweetened soy milk. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Sprint standup. Spent most of the day rewriting the computer services / technology resources section of the PharmD site. Lunch from The View Cafe: tofu with vegetables over brown rice, ate at my desk. 1-on-1 content work with Susie: bts research landing images. Followup with Pam E about her staged website review. Snack: potato chips, white cheddar popcorn. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Rode Muni to 9th and Judah. Missed the 66 bus by one minute. Dinner at New Sandy Cafe: bun bo xao with imperial roll, water: about $12 after tip. Rode Muni home. Watched Primer (2004) on Hulu Plus on my iPad in bed. I thought this film was of unusually good quality for such a low budget.

Sat Oct 4, 2014

Breakfast at home: Bicycle decaf coffee via Bialetti, oatmeal with fresh, diced sweetango apple; pumpkin pie spice; unsweetened soy milk. Home improvement: painting, stocked the car with new safety equipment, laundry, began unpacking the new Miele Capri vacuum. Midafternoon meal: leftover wonton soup, one mini mint-chip ice cream sandwich. Early dinner: leftover thai and chinese food. Tried to activate my Consumer Cellular SIM but they told me it would take 24 hours and I need my phone tomorrow, so I told them I would activate it later. Snack: baked sweet potato with butter, salt, and nutmeg. Unpacked the Miele and read most of its user manual, tried it out. It's very nice. And I realized I now need a wall organizer of some kind because it doesn't store all the parts of the vacuum as tidily as the Hoover upright it's replacing. I then wondered if I should have purchased a Miele upright, and then investigated this. The uprights cost a little more (e.g., $450 for a Twist instead of $400 for the Capri), and they weigh significantly more (26.8 pounds for the Twist, 18.2 pounds total for the Capri). However, I decided the canister was better for us because I was not confident from the photos of the Twist that it would be able to reach under a set of Ikea Tunhem cabinets through an opening 12.2 cm tall and reach to the back 40 cm deep. We have three of these on a marble floor, and

Detached my old SIM and removed my credit card info in my web account with Straight Talk.

Wed Oct 8, 2014

Breakfast: granola with sliced banana and unsweetened soy milk, 9 ounces of carrot juice. Rode Muni to work. Along the way I realized that I neglected to set the new APN for Consumer Cellular on my phone, so when I tried to check the arrival time for my connecting bus I was unable to. I alighted and waited at the bus stop for a long time and no 6 or 43 came. After perhaps 12 minutes I gave up and walked. Missed the shuttle I would have caught if Muni had worked. When I got to Kalmanovitz Library I used wifi to visit unlockit and set the APN. It worked quickly and perfectly after I removed the existing APN. I think now that Straight Talk probably would not have stopped working as the Consumer Cellular people told me it would. Got to work over an hour after I left home. Asana task followup. Email followup. Listserv management. Poster work in InDesign for Cindy. Content review with Susie. Lunch: leftover cashew chicken and ate it with half of a large order of brown rice from The View Cafe. Trained Kevin on the microsites build process. Content review with Susie. After I paid for my order at the counter, I was handed a bingo card. Turns out it was bottoms up bingo night. You get one card for each drink you purchase. I played three rounds but did not win and gave my card to others nearby before I left. Rode Muni home. Dessert: mini ice cream sandwich. Caught up on journaling.

Tried contacting customer support for Consumer Cellular from the land line, waited 15 minutes before the battery ran out on the cordless phone and the call disconnected, gave up for now. More home improvement: repaired a wooden bench with wood glue. Walked to Sushi Raw for dinner: house special pork ramen: $9.78 before a $2 tip. Safeway for groceries. Content review meeting and coffee break with Susie. Partway through I called the rest of the team into my office to demonstrate how to identify and resolve what we call the 8203 character entity problem. In our Drupal system we sometimes encounter a problem in which there is vertical whitespace preceding or following an image that we are unable to remove. Upon using browser tools to inspect the image, a character entity of can be found just before or after the image. This character entity is a zero-width space, so it is not visible either in wysiwyg or in view source mode. However, it is still a character, so to find it, edit the page, view source, put your cursor just before or after the image, then use the arrow keys to move the cursor back and/or forth over either the start or end of the image code. When your cursor stays in the same location for two presses of the arrow key in the same direction, you have found the hidden character entity. This will likely occur at the boundary of the image code—where the image starts or ends. In our case, it occurs adjacent to double square brackets (either left or right). Delete the mysteriously invisible character, save the page, and the unwanted whitespace should be gone. It's an uncanny experience, and to me it is mystical and paranormal. We don't yet know how/why the problem occurs, and until I had stumbled across this solution through trial, error, and I guess luck, we didn't know how to resolve it. Eric suspects it has something to do with CKeditor and specified a few more details which I now don't recall. Submitted a ticket to ITS for Lucia's new monitors installation. PharmD content work in Drupal and followup. Forgot to leave work early, rode Lyft home due to UberX price surge when Ed called. Met landlord Ed at home. He showed me emergency info stuff: how to turn off water, gas, and electricity. Over the past few weeks I have been taking more steps toward being fully prepared for a disaster like a major earthquake. Dinner at home: two small courses about an hour apart of leftover rice pasta with garlic basil sauce from a jar. Watched various videos on YouTube as well as part of Darrin's Dance Grooves on Netflix DVD. Made edits to my journal code so that it would display properly.
