Sat May 4, 2013

Recharge Spa work for Drew. Weight training: seated and standing dumbbell curl. Breakfast at home: leftover mung bean noodles in vegetable broth with bean sprouts, basil, spinach, and mushrooms. Home improvement: set up 3M command strips in preparation for rearranging lights over the dining table. Edited and uploaded photos to Flickr. Cut my hair, cleaned the tub/shower, showered. Moved the lights into position over the dining table. For lunch I made a stir-fry with wheat flour lo mein noodles, firm tofu, broccoli, bean sprouts, orange bell pepper, mushrooms, baby zucchini, egg, garlic, ginger sauce, soy sauce, cornstarch, rice wine, red wine vinegar. Abandoned using Asana for our grocery list and moved it to Simplenote. Asana was too slow to use from a mobile device for this purpose. I made banana-mango smoothies with brown rice syrup for Patrick and me. Troubleshot our internet connection with sonic.net. I've been frustrated that we get speeds of 4.9 Mbps (typical) and 6.1 Mbps (maximum) from their Fusion+Phone service which claims "up to 20 Mbps." It's DSL, so the people getting 20 Mbps probably live next door to the central office. We moved the DSL modem to the box where the connection enters the house and the speed there was 7.1 Mbps. We talked a little about what could be done inside the house, but I wasn't that interested in spending a lot of effort for such a small increase in speed since the most I would ever get was 7 Mbps. I asked what more could be done to improve the connection between the house and the central office and was told there was nothing that could be done. I asked about other technologies and was told there is a fiber project in the works but no timeline. After I got off the phone with sonic, I started shopping for mifi solutions for home. Anything 8 Mbps or better that works reliably at the same or slightly higher cost is what I'm seeking now. In an online chat a representative of T-Mobile claimed that their mobile hotspot delivers 42 Mbps which I did not believe was true. I noticed that my Time Machine backup on my MacBook Air wasn't working properly, so I deleted the entire backup and started it anew. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover lo mein noodle stir-fry. Patrick had his topped with a little leftover curry. Watched Ocean's Eleven (1960) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. Popcorn from a saucepan. I had mine with butter and extra fine sea salt. Patrick had his with the same plus brewer's yeast. We watched about three fifths of the film before pausing. I had a ginger ale before bed.

Sun May 5, 2013

Decided that mifi cannot replace home internet because mifi doesn't maintain connections reliably enough. Very frustrating to be stuck with 4.9 Mbps and no other good options. I had planned to visit Filoli with PDDR and Paul M but in Redwood City the temperature was 60 degrees F and the sky was overcast with 15 mph winds so we will postpone until June. Spent some time trying to get Java to work. Due to recent security concerns I think I disabled it so much that I cannot now figure out how to reenable it when I want to use it. Very frustrating. Nap. Late lunch: veggie burger and crinkle-cut fries, lemonade. Recharge Spa work for Drew. Dinner at home with Patrick: japanese food delivery from Ninki via Eat24. Finished watching Ocean's Eleven (1960) on Netflix DVD with Patrick. More Recharge Spa work for Drew. More internet speed tests. Troubleshot the problem described in [My Exchange Calendar shows an "Exclamation Error" but there is no detail when I click it.] More Recharge Spa work for Drew. Weeded apps and music in iTunes. Troubleshot iTunes synch error "apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined." Resolved it by quitting iTunes, restarting the iPhone by holding Home+Power until the Apple icon appeared, unlocking the passcode for the iPhone, then opening iTunes and restarting the sync. Troubleshot iTunes stuck on "Canceling sync" message.

Mon May 6, 2013

Breakfast at home: oatmeal with cinnamon and fresh, diced pink lady apple, lactaid milk. Rode my bike to work. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Did some catching up on email. Submitted a new request to ITS to rename printers. Followup with Alex Y: where is our new laptop? Calendar management: scheduled a technology training for the OSACA and possibly OEIS. Reviewed computer hardware in the storage room with Lisa. Small web edit for Shirin: PID. Reported two problems to SCUR with www.ucsf.edu: broken images, me for you display problem. Lunch at Moffitt Cafe: masala dosa with two dipping sauces, a vegetarian soup, and a samosa. (They had run out of potato curry.) It was all spicier than I prefer to eat, but I had wanted to try it anyway. Water from my (2010? 2009?) staff appreciation water bottle. Coded new pages for Shirin's new student profiles. Edited copy for Arkin Lab site. Followup for other lab websites in progress. Replied to a question we received on Facebook. Worked with Raul who came to resolve some computer problems I reported. Polly in OEIS brought lemons from her lemon tree to give away, and I took two. A variety of sweets were available for snacking today but I didn't have time to eat anything but a small chocolate cookie. Also, one of our students stopped by to offer bagels and croissants, but I couldn't eat anything at the moment. While biking home today my tire got stuck in the Muni rails, and I got thrown from my bike. This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was at 9th and Irving, and this one was on 9th between Irving and Judah, so I see a pattern developing. I skinned my left knee pretty badly and my right lower leg mildly. I must have fallen on my right palm as well since it's achey but no abrasion or even bruise. Beige corduroy jeans from Zara Boys are torn at the left knee. Bike appears to be undamaged. I was passing a double-parked car and doing so required me to cross the Muni tracks and it's tricky because there are two tracks to cross and watch for and that puts you closer to oncoming traffic and you also have to wonder if the double-parked car driver door is going to open suddenly. After I was thrown from my bike a car approaching from the opposite direction stopped suddenly about a foot away from my head and hand. Someone from the sidewalk asked if I was okay, and I said I was even before realizing how badly I was hurt. I kept thinking that if the double-parked car hadn't been there this never would have happened, but it's just as much my fault for not slowing or stopping or getting off my bike and walking it on the sidewalk past the car. A few seconds after I picked myself up the double-parked car drove away like nothing happened. I finished the ride home then cleaned and dressed my wounds. I'll be a little less agile the next few days, maybe take the bus, but I'll survive. Every time I ride I'm aware of the dangers and wonder if this ride will be my last. Today was the first day I tried to wear my wrist brace the whole day. I would do okay until I needed to go to the restroom or wash my hands and then I would forget to put it back on afterwards. I did wear it while riding to and from work, though. I've been needing to wear it more frequently because the numbness in my left hand fingertips was returning. Dinner at home by myself: leftovers from last night. Recharge Spa work for Drew: forms. Began building the employment application form. Weight training: tricep kickback. Late meal: ravioli in tomato sauce from a can, 8 ounces of lemon lime soda.

Tue May 7, 2013

Breakfast at home: granola with sliced banana and soy milk, 8 ounces of cappuccino beverage from a powder mix. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Needed to set up a site archiver again. Learned that you can run HTTrack on a Mac but there are a lot of installation steps involved. Searched for something simpler. Found and installed SiteSucker. Reviewed SiteSucker documentation, changed some settings. Began test run with SiteSucker. It didn't capture my Cufon fonts and I don't know why. I adjusted some settings and reran the download but it still didn't work. No time to troubleshoot this now. Drupal styling: videos on news pages. Comm team meeting. We talked about SCUR's new communications strategy document called Leading Revolutions in Health. Met with Susie to set up her hosts file and to set up browser bookmarks synchronization with xmarks. Lunch at JCC: spinach nut burger with fries and ketchup, orange-infused water. Followup with Alex Y about new laptop setup. Followup with student awards dinner AV request. Returned to Laurel Heights. Faculty page edit for Susie. Walked to Geary then rode Muni 38L to Union Square. Stopped at 135 Powell Street where a new Walgreens had opened at 10 AM this morning. The store, next door to UNIQLO, is Walgreens' flagship store in San Francisco. It of course still has a pharmacy on the 2nd level, but it's looking less and less like a drug store. There's frozen yogurt and smoothy stations in addition to a soda station. Lots of food to go items as well as convenience store items for tourists. This was the first time I have seen shelving units in Walgreens with each shelf lit, probably with LEDs. The store feels very spacious and well-designed. I am impressed. Dinner at M.Y. China with Danny, Drew, Romy, Phil, and Patrick. While arriving, I noticed John Cho walking with about seven other people through the mall away from the restaurants toward the cinema. I was surprised that I recognized him, since following celebrity culture is not something I do regularly. We later guessed that he was present for some kind of event related to Star Trek: Into Darkness. I enjoyed our dinner very much. My favorite was the whole roast chicken. We had the large, circular table on the outside edge of the restaurant, which I feel is the best table if you want to see and be seen here. Rode Muni home with Patrick.

Sun May 19, 2013

Packed for Drupalcon. Cut my hair, cleaned the bathroom, showered. Lunch at Shandong Deluxe for the first time: wonton soup with hand-pulled noodles. Delicious, but the broth could be more flavorful and there could be more vegetables. Bought a few items at Walgreens. I'm leaving for Portland through Thursday for a web conference called Drupalcon. A bunch of others from UCSF are going as well. Eric and I have been to a few of these so far. It's exhausting to attend 8 to 9 hours of lecture for 4 or more days straight. It's very different from our routine. Taxi to SFO. No time for a bite to eat before the flight. I found out in the middle of the flight that they had nothing to eat on the plane. Landed in Portland. Dinner at Beaches in the airport: seafood chowder, half order of garlic bread, hot water: $6.99 before tip. In this restaurant I particularly enjoyed the mural by Jason Prouty at Garage 31. Taxi to Hotel Deluxe. Settled. To bed around midnight.

Mon May 20, 2013

Drupal security training. Registration was not crowded. I was surprised that there seemed to be no checking that I was registered for the training I took. Chatted briefly with Craig from a university in Calgary who was another trainee in my training session. Rode transit to the hotel, rested. Made plans for dinner with others from UCSF. John K stopped by my room, then Eric. We walked to Powell's then tried and failed to find Courtney and Sierra, with whom John K had difficulty connecting by cellphone. John K had them paged, still no answer. John then realized he had Sierra's number after all, and we met them at a nearby Whole Foods. We returned to the hotel for a respite, got a restaurant recommendation from the front desk. Outside our hotel Eric encountered and introduced Andrew who worked on the Megamenu module with Eric. Dinner at Gruner with John K, Sierra A, Courtney A, Eric D. We talked about Santa Barbara, San Francisco, East Bay, running, injuries (knees, necks, wrists), food and restaurants, wine, rock bands we've been in, names for rock bands. Eric had coq au riesling; John had porcini mushroom risotto with duck confit; Sierra, Courtney, and I had the same thing: golden trout with asparagus and potatoes. Our receipt said our server was Christin who was terrific (as was our hostess whose name we didn't get). Afterwards, we returned to the hotel's Driftwood Lounge for drinks. Sierra, Courtney, John, and I had Springtime in Paris. Eric had a beer of some kind, probably on tap. John also had a Drambuie on the rocks.

Tue May 21, 2013

Drupalcon. Dinner with Anna and Brian at McMenamin's. Brian is just starting a three-year residency in Vancouver, Washington. Anna commutes into Portland via bus. Afterward we went to Salt & Straw for ice cream.

Wed May 22, 2013

Drupalcon. The main point of Karen McGrane's keynote to me seemed to be that constructions like wysiwyg editors and in-place editing are dangerous because they enable content creators to think of content as though they were print publications. This is an incorrect frame of thinking because web content needs to work well on different devices and contexts and wysiwyg and in-place editing provides perceptions that lead to a very narrow view of how that content will be used. Yes, you can introduce additional steps in the workflow to give the content author a better idea of all the ways the content will be used, but it remains to be seen whether that is a successful strategy on a large scale. Karen didn't say to never use wysiwyg editors or to never use in-place editing. She's encouraging us to be aware that they might not solve our problem and to proceed with this awareness. Walked in the rain with Eric to meet Katie M and Scott E for dinner at Olympic Provisions. Scott biked home in the rain, Katie gave Eric and me a lift to the hotel.

Thu May 23, 2013

Drupalcon. Unpacked. Dinner at home with Patrick: corn-quinoa garden pagodas (aka radiatore) with grilled vegetables, riesling. Unloaded photos from the camera to the iMac, resolved a problem with my iPhone in which app updates stalled with the message "Installing." I fixed it by deleting the apps on the iPhone then readding them in iTunes then synching.
