Wed Nov 7, 2012

Weight training: dumbbell row, dumbbell curl. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with diced cripps pink apple, cinnamon, unsweetened soy milk. Rode Muni to work. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Chatted briefly with Eric. Skipped the website core admins meeting due to supp app cleanup. 1-on-1 conf call with Michael. Supp app cleanup: had a difficult time resolving some errors but got it done after getting stuck a few times. I emailed Kevin K for help with FillPDF but ended up resolving things on my own. In case it helps others, the error "ERROR -32700: Parse error. Request not well formed." might be caused by special characters in the data. For example, in our case, I suspect that input sources for non-English languages caused certain characters to be included in the data that messes up the xmlrpc call. The resolution is to identify and remove these characters. In a different problem, I received an "access denied" error when attempting to generate a PDF. Only one node was inaccessible, and I identified it by copying the URL to generate the PDF, isolating the node numbers, then generating urls to view each node. I opened each node URL until I found the one that gave an "access denied" error. As admin I deleted this node and ensured that the data in that node was still present following the deletion. Quick lunch at the cafeteria: eggplant stir-fry with steamed white rice (they were out of brown rice). CLS data cleaning conf call with Nancy and Susie. Followup with John K and C3 about account creation for Brad E. Followup with Rodney and student AC about the Web Print feature in PaperCut. Met Patrick at Fuzio for dinner: crab cakes to share, prawn pomodoro and iced tea for Patrick, tuna melt with seasoned matchstick fries and english breakfast tea for me. Landmark Theatres: The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Liked it. Logan Lerman is excellent. Rode Muni home. Did a little UCSF work on unit goals. Added adhesive padding to my Carolina boots to make them more comfortable to wear. Weight training: front raise. Late meal: veggie burger and matchstick fries, water.

Breakfast: two scrambled eggs, two hash browns, 8 ounces of orange juice, hot water. Installed a Glade Sense & Spray automatic air freshener in the bathroom (clean linen). Opened packages - Tina sent many delightful gifts: raw vanilla, cinnamon bark, cocoa nibs, handmade body scrub, dried porcini mushrooms, dried blueberries, dried hibiscus flowers, a NewMetro auto-vacuum storage dome. The storage dome seems really neat: for storing any kind of food that you want to keep longer by removing air, moisture, and humidity. Snack: Patrick made biscuits from nearly scratch, nonfat milk. Completed redesigning the cosmetic services page for Recharge Spa for Drew. Snack: pecan delight from Lucia. Folded laundry. Weekend planning. Mon Nov 12, 2012

Pre-breakfast: granola with milk. Rode Muni to Palace Hotel. Registered, received a pretty cool lunch box for free. It contained a large piece of milk chocolate with the An Event Apart wreath logo made by The Chocolate Fetish in Asheville, North Carolina; a red mechanical pencil logoed with "fonts.com;" a cocktail napkin with an ad and discount offer from fonts.com; and a sporknife from vitamintalent.com made by Light My Fire. Tue Nov 13, 2012

Pre-breakfast: granola with milk. Rode Muni to Palace Hotel. An Event Apart day 2 of 2. Breakfast: veggie breakfast burrito with spinach tortilla, fresh fruit, orange juice, grapefruit juice. I received a free book: Implementing Responsive Design by Tim Kadlec. Susie received a free Zeldman doll, then gave it to Ed. Lunch: side salad, asian noodles, grilled vegetables, fresh fruit. Met Craig and Russ from UC Davis in Marketing. Conference summary: all great talks, wireless was miserably unreliable, food and drink were excellent. For me, there was no one talk that was most useful. Each one had some of what I already knew or was already doing, and each one also had something new. The value for me is in the details: knowing what blog posts or books are foundational or inspiring, or learning very specific design choices such as progressively enhancing with media queries from small screens to large rather than the other way around. It's also in the big picture: knowing that others' challenges are the same as our own. Dessert: an almond cookie. Susie gave me a ride home. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled halibut with marinade of meyer lemon and black vinegar, mashed potatoes with diced roasted garlic, leftover vegetable soup, hot water. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Uploaded An Event Apart slides to UCSF via VPN. Wrote summaries of today's sessions. Checked in on supp app closure: no new issues. I uninstalled iTerm from my MacBook Air. It's not that I didn't like it; I just never used it and was used to how Terminal works. Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: crunch, reverse push-up.

Coded the new update from the dean, sent it to Susie and Sue for review. Linkchecking, kiosk work. John K stopped by and adjusted the CNAME request ticket in Service Now so that it was routed to the correct place. Patrick picked me up in the car, then we picked up his mom at her place. Dinner at Southern Pacific with Romy, Drew, Danny, Phil, Patrick, and Mom Ryan: about $170. Dropped off Mom Ryan. Drove home. Uploaded photos to Flickr. Tonight I ordered a Straight Talk prepaid phone SIM for about $50 using a $10-off promo code provided by Emery. I'll use it in my iPhone 3GS until the iPhone 5 is officially supported on a prepaid plan in my area, preferably with LTE. My cellular bill should drop from about $90/month to about $45/month. Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: beat your boots, crunch, leg lift.

Thu Nov 15, 2012

Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: large vegetarian salad, crackers, hot water. I submitted this feedback to Vitamin T about their Brief History of Web Standards poster via their blog, but the post didn't show up, so I think they didn't get it: I think this is a really nice work even if I’m not entirely pleased with exactly how everything is mentioned. I received this as a poster at An Event Apart SF 2012, and when presented as a poster I don’t mind that it’s not an interactive application. It’s a lot of information, and poster form is great for that. I found some small errors (or what I think are errors): 1997: An open double quotation mark is missing before the word Jscript. 1998: Change one occurrence of "open source" to "open-source." 1998: Remove one extra space character between the words Netscape and Navigator. 2004: This should say Macromedia Flash instead of Adobe Flash since Adobe purchased Macromedia in 2005. There are many straight quote marks that should be curly instead. Examples: "By year's end" in 2004, "Shea's" in 2004, "good design" in 2004, "it's not dead yet" in 2010-2011. Thanks, AEA and Vitamin T! It’s not perfect, but I appreciate the effort and could not have done a better job myself. Now to frame it for my wall at work...

Fri Nov 16, 2012

Listserv management. Updated the new team member checklist. Web edits: OSACA staff listing. PharmD homepage images setup. Troubleshot a problem with the color printer: it needs a new transfer roller and we don't have one, so Lisa will order it. Lunch from the cafeteria: hummus and falafel plate. Prepped for purchasing a new MacBook Air for work, spent some time negotiating with the JACS team because the 5-month-old MacBook Air was not yet listed, spent about 30 minutes on the phone with BearBuy help because of problems encountered during purchasing. Lesson learned: if you want to buy something from Apple through BearBuy, you need to use Internet Explorer for Windows (!). UC Ready work. Created a new emergency contact list for Planning and Communications. Chatted with John K about SSL wildcard certs. Computer training for Rick. Updated the new team member checklist. Prepped a spare UPS for Cindy. Asked DLS to swap Cindy's UPS. Asked DLS to upgrade Rick from Win XP to Win 7. Organized mail folders in Outlook 2010 for Windows. Management activities. Prepared a birthday gift. Created fridge magnets from Halloween in Mexico cruise souvenirs (the dog tag and the sign-and-sail ID card) using cuttable magnetic sheets with adhesive backing. Dinner at home with Patrick: veggie burgers, sweet potato crinkle fries from frozen. Patrick purchased an iPhone 5 today under contract and has been enjoying playing with it and having his iPhone be more responsive. I'm still on the 3GS since I don't want a new contract and since I want to switch to prepaid. I recently ordered a StraightTalk SIM but have not yet received it.

Sun Nov 18, 2012

Lunch at Jalapenos at Stonestown Galleria with Patrick: tres tacos plate with rice, beans, and chips for both, horchata for Patrick, hibiscus drink for me. Shopping. Patrick bought an extra cable for his iPhone 5 at the Apple Store. Home. Labeled. Dusted and vacuumed. Prepared a gift. Folded laundry. Edited three pairs of pants that I had purchased on September 9 but had never worn because they needed altering first. Dinner at home with Patrick: steamed vegetables, leftover brown rice, hot water. Watched about the first 20 minutes of The Lady on Netflix DVD. We walked out of the theatre. Which is to say that I leaned forward and selected Stop in the DVD Player application on my iMac. The film wasn't horrible, but the storytelling was very awkwardly, stiltedly forced. We watched the first two or three skits in season 1, episode 1 of Portlandia: Farm. Patrick thought it was funny. I mostly did not laugh. We watched season 1, episode 2 of Archer. Yoga: standing warmup practice. Weight training: crunch.

Brunch at Cheesecake Factory with Danny. His tip for the day: you can seat yourself in the bar area at a high table and not have to wait to be seated at a regular dining table. Today we had a problem with some cheese. Turns out that the previous advice I had was not correct for sliced cheese. I had stored some smoky sharp cheddar slices loosely in waxed paper. After about a week, the edges had dried out. Most of this cheese is a loss, and I'm at a loss as to finding a complete and scientifically accurate reference for cheese storage. Very frustrating. Donated $30 to Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. Installed HandyPrint (aka AirPrint Activator) so that I could print from my iPad to my AirPrint-disabled printers. It works! Amazing!

Weight training: weighted leg lift, bench dip. Did some gathering of things we use infrequently so as to make more space. Many of these are gifts we have received from others, and our need for space to store the things we use more frequently outweighs our desire to keep things unnecessarily because it was a gift. In some cases, we're removing an infrequently used gift to make way for a newer gift from the same person. Since my early 20s I have preferred not receiving gifts during times when people might traditionally give me gifts, so if you're reading this and wondering what to get me, it's nothing.
