Finally finished upgrading MAMP and MAMP PRO from 1.8.4 to 2.1.1, a difficult process because the very few instructions that exist do not seem to be current. Can't remember what I had for breakfast. Probably oatmeal with diced organic gala apple with organic soy milk. Rode Muni to work. Calendar management. OSACA Staff meeting. Danielle's first staff meeting. Sammie's last staff meeting. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Lunch to go from the cafeteria: packaged sushi. Comm team lunch meeting. UCSF shuttle from Laurel Heights to Parnassus. Wed Oct 3, 2012

Weight training: Ukranian military leg lifts. Breakfast at home: organic oatmeal with diced, organic gala apple; organic cinnamon; organic, unsweetened soy milk. Lately I've been having half the portion of oatmeal than I usually have. The usual amount is one full cup of oats before cooking, so I am cutting back to a half cup instead, feeling like my meals are too large lately. Rode Muni to work. Linkchecking, Flickr work, kiosk work. Followup on new student mail issues. Followup with Valerie S on push notifications for ActiveSync. Followup with Nancy Jane about the personnel website. Followup on new student mail issues. Calendar management. Listserv management. Submitted a ticket to ITS for Monica. Followup on new student mail issues. 1-on-1 conference call with Michael W. Followup on new student mail issues. Followup with C3 about AddThis. Supp app project work in Drupal: followup on reported problems. I think lunch today was from Subway: 6-inch veggie delight sandwich, cookie. ICRD work for Shirin: add Danielle. Lots of followup on new student mail issues. Kidney project website updates for Sara. Doctor appointment. Drinks at Cafe Flore "Best of the Bay" Beach Party! with David P and David C. Hawaiian theme. BeBe Sweetbriar and other performed. Free food: edamame, ham-and-pineapple skewers, pulled pork sliders, crostini, fortune cookies, more. All the food was good except the skewers—the pineapple wasn't fresh and the ham was thought by some to be from a can. My fortune: You tend to look at the practical side of things. Dinner and drinks at Easy Creole at Residence with Emery, Ray, Jeremy, Willkho, Patrick, David C, and David P. We had arrived just as the Romney-Obama debate ended. I encountered Jen C from work and said hello, met her (husband?). Patrick, David P, and I received the very last plates of food before they ran out. The menu claims that the dishes are spiced but not spicy, but the spinach and mushroom étouffé was too spicy for both Patrick and me. I was able to eat one of the specials: sweet vegetable gumbo. $10 for each plate. It wasn't true table service. I tipped perhaps a little more than I should have. Rode Muni home. Later on Facebook, Patrick said, "there wasn't much Creole about the food. Tasted like bland Cuban food. Doesn't get my Creole approval." Caught up on journaling.

Lunch from the cafeteria: vegetable soup, small salad. Ate in Saunders Court but it was too cold so I moved indoors to Courtyard Cafe. IT staff conference call. Realized that I forgot my water bottle at Courtyard Cafe and found it exactly where I had left it—nice. More wireless problems followup. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Mission Center Building. Drupal Users Group meeting. UCSF shuttle from Mission Center Building to Parnassus. Snack from the cafeteria: a banana. Prepped a new listserv for Monica A for the residency preceptors. It was Sammie's last official day in the office, and she gave me a small gift to remember her by: a carefully selected assortment of four very small dishes from a (Japanese?) dollar store—so thoughtful and very Sammie. She tied them together with string, and these are a few of my favorite things. I love them! Rode Muni home. Dinner at home with Patrick: Whole Foods cream of tomato soup with toasted cheese bagel for dipping, hot water. Dessert: mudslides over ice from a bottled mix given to us by PDDR. Watched half of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill on Netflix DVD with Patrick.

Dinner at home with Patrick: hard and soft seitan tacos, hot water. Finished watching The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill on Netflix DVD with Patrick. My review: surprisingly interesting, less crazy than you might at first expect, newer than you might think, occasionally touching, watch out for the surprise ending, recommended for all lovers of San Francisco and all lovers of birds. Did some weeding of Twitter followings. Bicyclists of San Francisco, I am so disappointed in you. At different times on Friday, October 5, 2012, four of you rode your bicycle past me while I was walking on the sidewalk. In our city riding a bicycle on a sidewalk is illegal for persons 13 and older. #1 was riding in a bicycle lane in the wrong direction before coming on to the sidewalk in front of me and two other pedestrians. I told #1, "Don't ride on the sidewalk." #1 told me, "Fuck you!" and kept riding on the sidewalk. A few minutes later I encountered another bicyclist on the sidewalk. I told #2, "Please don't ride on the sidewalk—it's illegal." This one ignored me and kept riding on the sidewalk. I told #3, "it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk." #3 ignored me and kept riding on the sidewalk. #4 was a tandem bicycle and had two riders. I told #4, "it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk." To their credit, they biked another 100 feet and then dismounted, but then one of them—a woman—gave me the middle finger. They walked their bicycle from that point. I was not the only pedestrian at any of these encounters, but not a single other pedestrian spoke up about their right to a bicycle-free sidewalk. All these encounters took place on sidewalks between 9th and Judah and 513 Parnassus Avenue. The fine for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is $100, but I've never seen or heard about someone cited for it.

Sat Oct 6, 2012

Laundry. Added an "If found..." label to my Klean Kanteen using my Brother P-Touch labeler. Breakfast at home: cheese bagel sandwich with egg, daikon root sprouts, green onions; hot water. House chores: cleaning, folding laundry. Apple Notes, which I think is new with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion, is occasionally buggy and doesn't behave the way I expect with respect to deleting notes. Today text I pasted into it pasted a few lines above where the cursor was in my note. I can work around the problem by typing more text and/or moving the cursor to a new location, but I shouldn't have to. I'm not able to consistently reproduce the problem. When I select a note in the sidebar, I expect the Forward Delete key as well as Command+Delete to delete a note, but they don't. (The Backward Delete key deletes a note but is not intuitive to me because I find it less consistent than the other two. For example, Backward Delete doesn't delete a selection in Finder.) Just as an example, in iPhoto 8.1.2 you can use any of these three to delete a photo. Cut my hair, showered. Lunch: soft tacos with refried beans and seitan, hot water. Watched The Karate Kid (1984) on Netflix instant watch with Patrick. Snack: saucepan popcorn with salt. Dinner: roasted butternut squash with a little brown sugar, hot water. Dessert: chocolate tapioca pudding. Late meal: 8 ounces (before cooking) of organic quinoa spaghetti with tomato basil marinara sauce from a jar.

Sun Oct 7, 2012

Breakfast at home: 2 eggs scrambled with mexican cheese blend, green onions, refried beans, and seitan. Recharge Spa form work for Drew: form testing. Lunch: fried rice with green onions and clamshell mushrooms. More form work. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: spinach salad, toasted pumpkin seeds, heirloom tomato. Dessert: Vietnamese-Irish decaf coffee: coffee with condensed milk and Bailey's Irish Cream. I decided today that in my journal I will no longer specify "organic" unless there is a specific need. You can assume that our meals at home from this point on are mostly if not entirely organic. Patrick has been grocery shopping at Whole Foods on Haight more than Trader Joe's or Safeway not just for the better quality of food but also for the better customer service and better overall experience. We also realize that just because something lacks the label "organic" doesn't mean that it's necessarily of lower quality. More Recharge Spa work. After finding some mold on a large block of parm-reg cheese today, then searching Google for how to deal with it and how to store cheese, Patrick and I realized that we've been buying and storing cheese incorrectly all our lives, due, I think, to lack of proper education. There is not clear agreement amongst sources available on the web. There are different opinions on wrapping methods for hard versus soft cheeses, containers, whether and how to wipe with oil or vinegar, whether one needs expensive, special "cheese paper," and so on. I consulted my copy of The Joy of Cooking, but it talked more about how to make cheeses than store them, and regarding storage it lacked specifics I needed. We're choosing a method that I think will work for us: 1. Buy in small quantities. 2. Store loosely in waxed paper in the refrigerator so that air can get to it. 3. Eat soon. 4. Upon discovery of mold, wipe or rinse the mold away, or cut the moldy part away using a clean knife and cutting surface. To avoid recontaminating the remaining cheese, use a new piece of waxed paper. And if mold gets on the knife or cutting surface during mold removal, clean it immediately before continuing. Late snack: tortilla chips and hummus. Ironing. Late meal: small bowl of corn off the cob from frozen, water.

Fri Oct 12, 2012

Weight training: reverse crunch, reverse push-up. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with diced gala apple, cinnamon, soy milk; hot water. This morning I tried to get to the UCSF Sharecase technology conference from my home in the Sunset, but it didn't happen. I waited 10 minutes at Taraval and 26th and caught an L train but all passengers were forced to alight at 22nd Avenue where several hundred people were already waiting for shuttle busses. One bus arrived, and perhaps a third of the crowd boarded and departed. Muni staff were directing people but they did not announce anything about what was happening except that shuttle busses were coming. The scene was very disorganized because there were so many people waiting. I overheard one of them tell another that many people had been waiting much longer than others who had just arrived, and that was my cue to start walking. I walked to 19th Avenue, waited about 7 minutes, and a 28 bus that was nearly full took on some of the crowd that had gathered that like me walked from Taraval and 22nd. I didn't want to be smashed in with other people because I was wearing my suit today, so I started walking up 19th. At Rivera I waited a few minutes for the next 28 bus. It was fully packed and didn't even stop. I started walking again, and at Quintara I thought maybe I could catch the 66 bus, so I turned right and walked 2 more blocks and the 66 bus arrived just as I arrived at the bus stop. I took it to 8th and Lawton where I immediately caught a 43 bus which took me to work. I learned later that a 4:40 AM fire at Squat & Gobble across the street from West Portal Station cause the station to close for about 6 hours, causing significant delays for thousands of commuters. Shuttle busses in place of missing trains were too few and NextBus would not track them, of course, so it was impossible to know how long you'd have to wait—safer to just give up on Muni where possible. Spent pretty much the whole morning working on a response to Chapter Three to an inquiry of theirs regarding the status of our project. Followup on email address change issues for entering students. Supp app project work in Drupal: followup on reported problems. Very quick lunch to go from the cafeteria: hummus with assorted vegetables. White Coat Ceremony. Light issues. Chatted briefly with Don K at the reception about Mexico safety. Dinner at home with Patrick: small pizza, coconut shrimp, hot water. We didn't have cocktail sauce, so we used marinara instead before I realized that for coconut shrimp you really need some kind of sauce made with a tropical fruit. Mango salsa, pineapple dipping sauce, papaya dipping sauce. Patrick also thought you could use peanut sauce, and I agreed. Dessert: small brownie wedge, Mudslides. Updated my journal entry for Friday, October 5. Weight training: crunch. Late meal: leftover portobella and cheese sandwich.

Sat Oct 13, 2012

Weight training: reverse crunch. Patrick drove us to Pacific Grove where we met Danny, Drew, Romy, Phil, Quyen, Dave, and Tommy for a weekend getaway. No one was at the getaway house when we arrived, so Patrick and I ate lunch at Toasties Cafe then had excellent ice cream at Lappert's. We settled at the house for a bit, chatting with the others, some of whom enjoyed the hot tub, then got groceries at Grove Market for a jambalaya dinner. After dinner, we watched Kung Faux on owned DVD then Cry Baby on the cable television's instant watch.

Sun Oct 14, 2012

Pre-breakfast: super granola, lowfat plain yogurt, sliced banana. Checked out of the getaway house. Brunch at Red House Cafe with service by Sophia/Sylvia. We enjoyed both the food and the service. We said goodbye. Patrick and I bought a peach-banana smoothie at a nearby cafe only because we needed to use the restroom. (The one at the restaurant we left had a long line.) Patrick drove us home. We stopped at a Starbucks near Shoreline Amphitheatre along the way to use the restroom and get a beverage. Home. House chores: lots of long-needed ironing, praticed some stitch witchery. We walked to flour+water and ate there: I had tagliarini, Phil and Romy shared a pizza, Drew had (I think) a pasta dish, and we shared a cold kale salad. Lambrusco. Drew was impressed that they used the proper glasses to serve the lambrusco. No dessert. About $40 each. Walked to PDDR's. Assorted desserts. I requested and received a small glass of Firelit (batch #1). Rode Muni to the Castro. Found Andy and Emery on Find My Friends at Wasabi Bistro with Scott, Ray, and Tim C. Wasabi Bistro had opened only a few weeks ago. The guys say the sushi is really good and the staff is friendly and has been treating them really well. They had just finished dinner but needed to pay. I joined. We're all excited about the cruise and shared last-minute tips and plans. I met some of the staff: Vincent, Mario, and (I think) Sharon. After a while other friends of Andy walked in for dinner: Alvin (who works for some game company of which I missed the name), Matthew (who works at Apple). Rode Muni home.

Emery and Chris O were waiting outside and introduced us to David. Checked in to Le Montrose. Our room is possibly the most expensive hotel room we've ever had. It's very, very nice. Walked to SMB to get some food and encountered Larry and Chris. Larry introduced us to Bob. We ate at a sidewalk table at Bite Cafe: mexicali wrap with grilled chicken and Corona for Patrick, zucchini and tomato something with juice and iced cappuchino for me. Service and food delivery is very leisurely. Shopping around SMB. Encountered Nico outside of CVS, chatted for a few minutes about his shows and about cruising. This will be his second cruise.
